Third Stimulus Checks: When and How Will You Get $1,400?

Along with the requirement of adding a new dependent in 2021, you must also meet other requirements of the American Rescue Plan Act to get the payment. For instance, the full $1,400 stimulus payment would be available to individuals with income less than $75,000 .

Payments phase out if your income exceeds the $75,000 threshold income. Moreover, those with income more than $80,000 are not eligible for any money.

If you meet all the requirements, then the stimulus money will arrive as part of your 2021 refund. Even if you dont normally file a tax return, you must file a 2021 tax return to claim your stimulus money.

The House of Representatives passed the Build Back Better Act back on Friday, November 19, and this includes some benefits for seniors, although there is no sign of a stimulus check.

Medicare will be expanded to include hearing services, while government have more power when it comes to negotiating drug prices with pharmaceutical companies, but this bill is not going to be passed in the Senate ahead of 2022.

This is because Democrat Sen. Joe Manchin has declared that he will not be supporting the Build Back Better bill, which means that the millions of people that it supports are now left in the lurch. While there is progress expected in 2022, the $1.9 trillion bill will not be given the green light in 2021.

Child Tax Credit: July 15 Deposits

Some families received another form of stimulus aid on July 15 when the IRS deposited the first of six monthly cash payments into bank accounts of parents who qualify for the Child Tax Credit . Families on average received $423 in their first CTC payment, according to an analysis of Census data from the left-leaning advocacy group Economic Security Project.

Eligible families will receive up to $1,800 in cash through December, with the money parceled out in equal installments over the six months from July through December. The aid is due to the expanded CTC, which is part of President Joe Bidenâs American Rescue Plan.

Families who qualify will receive $300 per month for each child under 6 and $250 for children between 6 to 17 years old. Several families that spoke to CBS MoneyWatch said the extra money would go toward child care, back-to-school supplies and other essentials.

Families may enjoy more of a tax break in coming years, if Mr. Bidenâs American Families Plan moves forward. Under that plan, the Child Tax Creditâs expansion would last through 2025, giving families an additional four years of bigger tax breaks for children.

Number Of Third Stimulus Checks

Question: How many third-round stimulus checks will I get?

Answer: As with the first two round of checks, the legislation authorizing the third round of payments only calls for one payment. This is not a ârecurringâ payment situation.

However, some people will receive a supplemental payment if their 2020 tax return is filed and/or processed after the IRS sends them their regular third stimulus check. The IRS is calling these âplus-upâ payments, and theyâll only be sent if your regular stimulus check would have been higher if it was based on your 2020 tax return . So, for example, if you received a $700 third stimulus check based on the information found on your 2019 return, filed your 2020 tax return later, and your third stimulus check would have been for $800 if it was based on information from your 2020 return, then the IRS will send you a second payment for the $100 difference.

Some married couples could also get two payments. If a joint tax return is filed, a married couple could get two separate third stimulus payments. Half may come as a direct deposit and the other half will be mailed to the address the IRS has on file. Each spouse should check the IRSâs âGet My Paymentâ tool separately using their own Social Security number to see the status of their payments.

Can Homeless People Get A Stimulus Check

How to Get Your $1,400 Stimulus Check

Yes, they can get a stimulus payment. The only way to get a payment is to file a tax return with the IRS. You can do this for free. If you dont have a fixed address and you dont have a bank account, check with a local community or religious organization or with a homeless shelter to see if you have options for getting your mail from the IRS delivered there.

Keep in mind that it may take some time for the IRS to process your tax return and your stimulus payment.

What’s Holding Up New Stimulus Checks

Chief among the issues are whether Republican lawmakers would support the package. But with GOP support so far failing to materialize, Democrats are pushing forward with the budget reconciliation process, which would next direct House and Senate committees to discuss spending priorities.

“When Congress colors in the details of the stimulus package, investors should expect some deviation from the original Biden plan, as even a Congress closely in sync with the president will look to put their own imprint on the bill,” Hammond wrote in a February 2 research note.

The plan to provide more direct aid to low- and middle-class households could help lift GDP by 0.7%, although other measures in the bill such as a higher minimum wage and aid to states could boost GDP growth by 1.5%, according to a January 18 report from Oxford Economics Chief U.S. Economist Gregory Daco. He’s predicting a $1.3 trillion stimulus package will be approved before the end of March.

“The additional stimulus will be welcome given the extent of labor market damage, with still 10 million fewer jobs than before the pandemic,” he and Oxford Economics lead U.S. economist Lydia Boussour wrote on January 22.

Here’s what analysts are predicting about the $1,400 checks and other spending proposals.

Are Adult Dependents Getting Third Stimulus Checks

The new stimulus plan expands eligibility to adult dependents, including college students, elderly relatives and disabled adults.

The text of the plan redefines the term dependent according to section 152 of the tax code, which includes both qualifying children and adults: Section 152 provides that the term dependent means a qualifying child ) or a qualifying relative ).

While the plan pays out $1,400 for each qualifying dependent, families should keep in mind that the targeted lower income ranges exclude them if they earn over $160,000.

For reference, the second stimulus checks provided additional $600 payments for qualifying dependents under the age of 17. So a couple filing jointly with three eligible children could get a maximum second payment of $3,000 .

Under the first and second rounds of stimulus checks, children and adult dependents over the age limit could not get an additional payment, and they did not qualify for a stimulus check of their own either.

With the new stimulus plan, however, both joint filers and heads of household get an additional $1,400 payment for each dependent, regardless of age. The table below breaks down the third stimulus checks for heads of household with one dependent:

Do You Have To Pay Back The Stimulus Check

$1,400 stimulus check: Will dependents get next payment?

No, you dont have to pay it back. It also doesnt reduce any refund you would otherwise receive.

No, there is no provision in the law requiring repayment of an Economic Impact Payment, the IRS website said about the first round of checks.

If your income dropped in 2020 compared with 2019, you may now be eligible for the payment or a bigger payment if you have already filed your taxes and they have been processed by the IRS.

If your payment is too high based on your 2020 income and you still havent filed your 2020 taxes, youre not responsible for paying back the difference.

Who’s Eligible For The Payment

Those eligible for the money could include people whose tax situation changed in 2021, but the change was not reflected in their latest tax return.

For example, parents who welcomed a child in 2021 may be eligible for the $1,400 payments as long as they meet income requirements.

Eligibility for the third round of stimulus checks, issued earlier this year as part of President Joe Biden‘s American Rescue Plan, was based on a family’s last tax return filed.

Since babies born in 2021 were not factored in, the $1,400 checks will be applied to their parent or guardian’s 2021 tax return.

Others may be eligible for more money as well due to a change in income or the addition of a dependent.

Payments begin to phase out for people who make more than those income limits.

They completely phase out for individuals who make more than $80,000 and couples who make more than $160,000.

The number of families still owed a $1,400 stimulus check is not yet known but it is estimated to be in the millions.

The figure wont be known until the total number of births for 2021 is revealed.

Who Was Included In The Last Batch Of Stimulus Payments

On Friday, April 16, the Internal Revenue Service, the U.S. Department of the Treasury, and the Bureau of the Fiscal Service disbursed nearly 2 million more payments. These payments were the sixth batch of stimulus payments that rolled out to Americans since mid-March, and totaled more than $3.4 billion.

These payments primarily went to those who were slated to receive plus-up payments or those who receive Social Security benefits, and included:

  • Nearly 700,000 payments to those who did not initially have enough of their information on file with the IRS to be issued a payment but who recently filed a tax return
  • Supplemental payments for people who were deemed eligible for a plus-up payment after filing taxes these plus-up payments had a value of nearly $1.2 billion
  • 600,000 payments went to Social Security beneficiaries and Supplemental Security Income recipients, including those with foreign addresses
  • Overall, about 900,000 direct deposit payments and nearly 1.1 million paper check payments

How Much Does The Third Stimulus Check Pay

The $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief plan includes a third round of $1,400 stimulus payments, topping off the $600 checks that were , and adding up to $2,000.

Congress passed the coronavirus relief plan with targeted income limits for maximum stimulus payments to individual taxpayers earning under $75,000 and joint filers making up to $150,000. But whereas the first and second rounds of stimulus payments phased out checks on a sliding scale of $5 for every $100 over the income limit, the new plan cuts off high earners at $80,000 for individuals and $160,000 for couples.

Eligibility for the third stimulus checks is based on your tax filing status. For more information on who qualifies for a third stimulus check, our tables below will help you calculate different payment options.

Which Families Are Eligible To Receive $1400 In 2022

Although the majority of families have already received their full payment, those who had qualified children in 2021 can claim the Recovery Rebate Credit on their next tax return. Economic Impact Payments, sometimes known as stimulus checks, were distributed in 2021 as part of the Recovery Rebate Credit advance payments.

If you did not get the entire amount due by December 31, you could claim the remaining funds when you do your taxes in 2022. Because the 2021 Economic Impact Payments were computed using a person’s 2020 or 2019 tax return, any qualified dependents who joined the family in 2021 will be excluded from the computation and payment.

Per The East County Gazette, if you did not get the total amount due by December 31, you can claim the cash in 2022 when you file your taxes. Any qualifying dependents who joined the family in 2021 will be omitted from the computation and payment since the 2021 Economic Impact Payments were computed using a person’s 2020 or 2019 tax return.

Some of those states may continue with those initiatives into the following year, but they aren’t standardized. Some were national stimulus checks, while others were specific to professions like teachers or first responders. Others were restricted to students or administered through the expansion of programs like SNAP.

Biden said on March 6 that checks would start going out this month. Based on what we saw with the second stimulus check, payments could start arriving in less than a week. Taxpayers who have current direct deposit information on file with the IRS will get their checks fastest. Those who file a paper tax return or who dont receive direct deposit will likely be waiting at least a couple extra weeks.

For the past two rounds, the IRS has allowed taxpayers to track their checks using the Get My Payment tool on its website. The tracker isnt live for the third round, but well update this post when it becomes available.
