Not all stimulus-eligible Americans are required to file federal income tax returns under normal circumstances.
For example, those for whom Social Security Disability Insurance benefits account for most or all income, and those with no or very low income generally arent expected to file.
However, the IRS may require stimulus-eligible Americans to file information tax returns that confirm their identity, income, and residence. If youre not required to file income taxes and didnt file an information tax return in 2019 or 2020, file an information return as soon as you can.
If your income is high enough that you must file a federal income tax return, youll need to file a return for the 2020 tax year before the final mid-October deadline .
Whether you should file as soon as possible or wait depends on how your income changed in 2020. If your income decreased significantly, youll want to file immediately because you could be entitled to a bigger stimulus payment than your 2019 income allows.
However, if you dont file in time, you may be eligible to claim the difference between your actual stimulus payment and the higher amount you would have been entitled to on your 2021 return.

How To Get Your Stimulus Checks If You Still Haven’t Received Payment
The first and second stimulus check amounts were for $1,200 and $600, respectively. The third was for $1,400. Here’s how to get your stimulus checks if you haven’t received them yet.
Firstly, some people haven’t received checks because not everyone qualifies for them. You aren’t eligible if your previous IRS tax filings show that you’re a single person who makes over $75,000 annually, a head of household who makes over $112,500 annually, or a married couple who jointly reports over $150,000 annually.
Some are also ineligible due to restrictions on age and dependent status. If someone claimed you as a dependent in their previous tax returns and you were 17 years old or older on January 1, 2020, then you weren’t eligible for the first two checks, according to CNBC.
The IRS and the Social Security Administration have also said that people may not have received stimulus checks because they didn’t file their 2020 taxes. They urged them to file for 2019 and 2020 even if they’re not legally required, in order to ensure that all eligible people receive their payments.
Even if you owe the IRS money, you should still receive your stimulus checks or the aforementioned 2020 Recovery Rebate Credit. The IRS won’t withhold those funds.
Didn’t Get The Full Third Payment Claim The 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit
You may be eligible to claim a Recovery Rebate Credit on your 2021 federal tax return if you didn’t get a third Economic Impact Payment or got less than the full amount.
In early 2022, we’ll send Letter 6475 to the address we have on file for you confirming the total amount of your third Economic Impact Payment and any plus-up payments you received for tax year 2021. You will need this information to accurately calculate your 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit when you file your 2021 federal tax return in 2022.

Will The Irs Reload A Prior Pre
Some people who received one or both of their first two stimulus payments on a pre-paid debit card may wonder if the IRS will reload that card with the $1,400 for the latest round of payments. The answer is no, the IRS says.
If the IRS now has bank account information for you, it will send the money via direct deposit. If not, it will either issue a check or a pre-paid debit card, but the latter will come in the form of a new card, the tax agency said.
People should look for a white envelope with the return address “Economic Impact Payment Card” accompanied by a U.S. Treasury Department seal. The card says “Visa” on the front, and the issuing bank, MetaBank, on the back.
You Receive Social Security Or Other Benefits But No Extra Income
People who receive Social Security, CalWorks and CalFresh benefits, Supplemental Security Income/State Supplementary Payment/and Cash Assistance Program for Immigrants, State Disability Insurance and VA disability benefits, or unemployment income generally do not qualify for a GSS II payment if those benefits are their only income source, according to the state, noting that those forms are not included in AGI.
However, if the recipient has other sources that do count as adjusted gross income, they may qualify to receive a stimulus check.

What Is A Recovery Rebate Credit
The IRS has lots of different rules, regulations and terms that make things confusing for filers, but pay no attention to the man behind the curtain: The Recovery Rebate Credit is simply just another name for your stimulus check. And if you were one of the lucky Americans who received two EIPs with no problems, you technically just received an advance of that Recovery Rebate Credit.
Americans can claim that credit by filling out a new, special section on their 2020 Form 1040 or 1040-SR if theyre a senior. That also goes for taxpayers who normally dont have to file a tax return, according to the IRS.
But rest assured: Receiving a stimulus check wont come back to bite you. The IRS says that the credit will only increase the amount you receive as a tax refund or decrease the amount you owe, rather than subtract from the refund youre entitled to. Your stimulus check also isnt considered taxable income.
Third Round Of Economic Impact Payments Continues

First And Second Stimulus Check
You will need to file a tax return for Tax Year 2020 . The deadline to file your taxes this year was May 17, 2021. The tax filing extension deadline is October 15, 2021.
If you missed the filing deadline, you can still file your tax return to get your first and second stimulus checks. If you dont owe taxes, there is no penalty for filing late. If you owe taxes, you may be subject to penalties and fines for not filing or not paying taxes. The government may reduce your tax refund to pay for any taxes you owe and other federal and state debts.
Use The Irs Get My Payment Tool To Track Stimulus Money
For the third stimulus check: It’s worth visiting the IRS’ online portal designed to track the status of your 2021 payment. Generally, it should tell you when your check will be processed and how you’ll receive it: for example, as a paper check in the mail. If the Get My Payment tool doesn’t give you information you can understand or says your check is on the way and you haven’t received it, you may need to eventually request a payment trace or file for a recovery rebate credit.
For the first or second payment: If you can’t find the letter sent by the IRS, you’ll need to create an online profile with the IRS to see your status. For any problems, you may need to issue a payment trace or file for a recovery rebate credit, even if you don’t normally submit a tax return. Close To 90 Million People Have Received Their Stimulus Payments As Of April 28 According To The Internal Revenue Service But Millions More Are Still Waiting
The Internal Revenue Service started sending the first round of stimulus checks to millions of Americans who need economic help during the coronavirus pandemic in mid-April. According to the IRS, close to 90 million people already received that payment but there are more that are still waiting for that check.
The people who already received their $1,200 stimulus payment can use it as they see fit while the country closes in on re-opening the economy at the beginning of May. The IRS distributed 88.1 million checks and they were distributed on April 17 and paid out $157.96 billion, according to statistics released April 24.
So that is more than half of the $290 billion put aside for direct payment to individuals in the $2.2 trillion bill called the CARES Act. The IRS started mailing paper checks during the week of April 20, according to a timeline from the House Ways and Means Committee.
The IRS is slated to put approximately 5 million checks in the mail each week for up to 20 weeks. The agency started mailing checks to the people who have the smallest incomes first, the timeline indicated.

How To Claim Your Missing $600 Or $1200 Payments
The stimulus checks are generally advance payments of a tax credit.
The 2020 tax returns now offer a section where you can claim the recovery rebate credit for either the first $1,200 stimulus check or the second $600 payment if that money is due to you line 30 of Forms 1040 or 1040-SR.
On that part of the return, filers can start with the amount of stimulus money they already received and calculate any more funds which they are due. That can be done either through a worksheet provided with the tax form or through tax preparation software.

These plus-up payments could include a situation where a persons income dropped in 2020 compared to 2019, or a person had a new child or dependent on their 2020 tax return, and other situations, the IRS said in a statement announcing the payments.

Heads Of Households: If Your Agi Is Over $120000 Or More You’re Not Eligible
Similar to the single-taxpayer cutoff, heads of household with an AGI of $120,000 or more are excluded under the new bill. To get a partial stimulus payment, you’d need to make between $112,500 and $120,000. But to get the full amount, you’d need to make less than $112,500 if you’re the head of household.
Confirm The Irs Has The Correct Direct Deposit Bank Account And Mailing Address
If the IRS sent or is planning to send your payment by direct deposit, youll see the last four digits of the account number. Check this against your own bank account information.
If youre slated to receive a paper check or mailed debit card , you should receive it at the address on file within one to two weeks of mailing.
