Filing A Payment Trace To Find Missing Stimulus Money
You can request an IRS payment trace if you received the confirmation letter from the IRS that your payment was sent , or if the Get My Payment tool shows that your payment was issued but you have not received it within certain time frames. This is the case for all three checks. Check out our guide to requesting an IRS Payment Trace here.
This Irs Tax Return Status Is Showing What Does It Mean
Both IRS tools will show you one of three messages to explain your tax return status.
- Received: The IRS now has your tax return and is working to process it.
- Approved: The IRS has processed your return and confirmed the amount of your refund, if you’re owed one.
- Sent: Your refund is now on its way to your bank via direct deposit or as a paper check sent to your mailbox.

You Haven’t Filed Taxes For 2018 Or 2019
In most cases, the IRS determines whether someone is eligible for a stimulus check, and how much they’ll get, based on their most recent tax return â for 2019, or 2018 if the individual hasn’t filed yet this year. The deadline to file federal taxes has been pushed back from April 15 to July 15 this year, but nonetheless it may be in your best interest to file your taxes sooner than later.
People who have already filed their taxes do not have to do anything to get their checks. However, some people are not required to file taxes, and they could miss out on stimulus payments if they do not take action. Low-income earners â with gross income of $12,200 or less â do not need to file federal tax returns. For these people to receive a stimulus payment, they must register at the IRS’s “Non-Filers: Enter Payment Info Here” page.
Youre A Member Of A Mixed

Under the CARES Act, U.S. adults with a Social Security number werent eligible for a stimulus check if they were in a mixed-status household, meaning one partner was undocumented or didnt have an SSN. A recent law change, however, scraps that rule. Now, individuals would be able to receive both payments retroactively meaning both the first and second stimulus payment for the taxpayers and qualifying children of the family who have work-eligible SSNs.
Youll want to reconcile that first amount with your Recovery Rebate Credit, if you didnt receive it.

What To Do About Payment Scams
Though it’s uncommon, you may believe you’ve been scammed out of your payment or had it stolen. The Federal Trade Commission has a website where you can report a stolen stimulus check. If you’re worried about theft, you can sign up for a free USPS service that will send you a picture of every piece of mail coming your way — including your stimulus payment.
Your Stimulus Payment Went To The Wrong Bank Account
The problem: You signed up for direct deposit, but your check didn’t arrive. Why? It’s possible that your stimulus payment went to the wrong bank account. Maybe your account was closed, or an electronic transfer attempt was made for a temporary bank account, like one used on behalf of millions of people who used a tax preparer like Jackson Hewitt, TurboTax and H& R Block. Although this latter issue hasn’t been widely reported, it affected the first and second payments.
What to do: Reach out to your bank or tax preparer to see if an attempt was made to deposit money to your account. Ask if they have an internal protocol to file a report or follow up with a representative who can help.
What next? If you didn’t get a direct deposit by March 24, then your stimulus payment will most likely arrive in the mail. Here’s how to track the payment to your mailbox. The IRS is not allowing individuals to register for new direct deposit accounts or correct inaccuracies. If your third stimulus check never arrives, here are all the ways you can try to resolve the issue.

How To Use Irs2go To Check The Status Of Your Tax Refund
The IRS also has a mobile app called IRS2Go, available for both iOS and Android, that checks your tax refund status. It’s available in English and Spanish. You’ll be able to see if your return has been received, approved and sent.
In order to log in, you’ll need your Social Security number, filing status and expected refund amount. The IRS updates the data in this tool overnight, so if you don’t see a status change, check back the following day. Once your return and refund are approved, you’ll receive a personalized date by which to expect your money.
You can check on your refund using the IRS2Go mobile app.
Your Payment Hasnt Been Processed Yet
If you havent received a direct deposit or physical payment and the IRS Get My Payment Tool says Payment status not available, dont panic.
On that same page it should also state that If you get this message, either we have not yet processed your payment, or you are not eligible for a payment.
The eligibility requirements have changed from the last two rounds of payments, so pay attention to the new numbers to make sure you actually qualify this time around.
If the message you get from the Get My Payment Tool says Need more information, then your payment was returned to the IRS because it was unable to be delivered. In this case only, people who get this message can use Get My Payment to enter their correct bank account information. For direct deposit, this includes the name of your bank, your bank account number and your routing number. Do not try to contact the IRS via phone to provide bank information.
Know that the IRS only updates the Get My Payment Tool information once per day, typically overnight, so refreshing throughout the day wont yield any new information.

Youre Part Of A Mixed
Many taxpayers who would otherwise qualify for a stimulus payment will not receive any money because they have unauthorized immigrants in their family.
Under the CARES Act, which outlines the terms of the coronavirus stimulus package, unauthorized immigrants and most U.S. citizens or legal immigrant spouses who file taxes jointly with unauthorized immigrants or immigrants without a Social Security number are excluded from receiving aid. The only exception is for military families.
That means some U.S. citizens will not get stimulus payments if they are part of a mixed-status family that includes either unauthorized immigrants or immigrants who are going through the process of becoming legal citizens and havent received a Social Security number yet. However, legal permanent residents who have Social Security numbers and file taxes will qualify for stimulus money, as long as no one in the household files their taxes under an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number instead of an SSN.
Check The Get My Payment Tool
The IRS website has been uploading data for your third stimulus payment into a tool on its website called Get My Payment. If your information has been updated, you’ll be able to see the date you can expect to receive your stimulus payment, or the date it was deposited or mailed. You should also be able to see whether your money was direct deposited or whether you’ll be receiving the payment by mail.
Many people are seeing a message that says either the IRS doesn’t have enough information yet or you aren’t eligible for the payment. This message doesn’t necessarily mean you aren’t eligible for the payment. This information may be updated this coming weekend.
Here are some of the issues people are seeing, either with their actual deposit or with the Get My Payment tool.

What If I Didn’t Get The Right Amount
Some people may get their checks quickly, yet discover the payment amount is incorrect that could be due to their dependents or changes in income.
The law provides $1,400 per adult and dependent, as long as the household income falls below the income threshold for eligibility. In the current bill, single people whose adjusted gross income was below $75,000 and married couples with income below $150,000 will receive their full payments, as well as their dependents. Payments decline for earnings above that, cutting off entirely for single people earning $80,000 and $160,000 for married couples.
But some people may not get the right amount, especially if they haven’t yet filed their 2020 tax returns, given that the IRS extended the tax deadline until May 17. For instance, if a family had a baby last year but hasn’t yet filed their 2020 returns, the IRS would base their payments on their 2019 returns which wouldn’t include their new baby. In that case, the family would receive $2,800 for themselves, but not the extra $1,400 for their child.
For instance, the most recent batch of checks issued this week include “plus-up” payments for people who received checks based on their 2019 tax returns but who have since filed their 2020 tax returns and are owed more. The agency said such extra payments could reflect a loss of income in 2020, which could entitle the tax filers to more stimulus money, or if they had a child last year.
Stimulus Checks Could Be Seized To Cover Past Due Debt

If you owe child support or other debts, your first check was seized to cover those debts. The third check is subject to being taken by private debt collectors, but not the state or federal government. The same goes for the second payment, too, if you’re claiming missing money in a recovery rebate credit. You may receive a notice from the Bureau of the Fiscal Service or your bank if either of these scenarios happens.
In the case of the third check, we recommend calling your bank to confirm the garnishment request from creditors and ask for details about how long you have to file a request with a local court to stop the garnishment. If you think money has already been mistakenly seized from the first two checks, you can file a recovery rebate credit as part of your 2020 tax return — but only if you filed a tax extension.
You can track down your stimulus payment without picking up the phone.

Individual Taxpayers With Agi Of $80000 Or More Aren’t Eligible
The new stimulus check will begin to phase out after $75,000, per the new “targeted” stimulus plan. If your adjusted gross income, or AGI, is $80,000 or more, you won’t be eligible for a third payment of any amount. However, if you make between $75,000 and $80,000, you could get a portion of the check. You’d receive the full amount if your yearly income is less than $75,000. Here’s how to estimate the stimulus check total you could receive.

The IRS says direct deposit refunds will come much quicker than mailed checks in 2022.
We’re now just over a month into the 2022 tax season and more than 22 million tax refunds have already been issued. Even with the unprecedented backlog and pandemic staffing issues, the IRS says you can still expect your refund money to arrive within 21 days of filing your tax return. Using free IRS tools, you can find out when your refund’s on the way around 24 hours after you submit your return.
The IRS recommends filing electronically and setting up direct deposit this year, as it can help get your refund issued within 21 days . “Filing a paper tax return this year means an extended refund delay,” IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig announced in a . Taxpayers claiming the earned income tax credit or additional child tax credit also get a slight delay — the IRS expects the refunds for those filers to arrive tomorrow, March 1.

You Receive Supplemental Security Income
When the stimulus package was first revealed, there was some confusion as to whether Supplemental Security Income recipients qualified to receive any money. The good news is that they do, and those payments are scheduled to go out no later than early May. So if you receive SSI and havent gotten your check yet, it should be on the way soon.
However, its important to note that while SSI recipients who dont have any qualifying children will receive their $1,200 payment automatically, those who do have qualifying children under age 17 will need to visit the non-filer tool and enter their information. If you dont do this soon, youll have to wait longer to get your extra $500 per child.

You’ll need the amount of the payment in the letter when you file your tax return in 2021.
If you don’t receive your third stimulus payment, or if it was for the wrong amount, you’ll need to file a tax return for the 2021 tax year . You’ll file Form 1040 or Form 1040-SR . The instructions for Form 1040 and Form 1040-SR include a worksheet you can use to calculate the amount of the credit you are eligible for.

How To Track Your Stimulus Payment
The good news is that in many cases, the third stimulus payment may still be on the way if you haven’t received it yet. If you’re still waiting on your money, you can keep an eye on the mail for a paper check or prepaid debit card.
If you want to see what’s landing in your mailbox before the mailman arrives, you can use the USPS Informed Delivery system tool to keep an eye on any paper checks or debit cards headed your way.
You can also track your payment through the IRS’s Get My Payment tool. This tool gives you information on whether you’re in line to receive a stimulus payment. If you are, the tool will tell you how and when it will be sent to you.
Use The Irs Get My Payment Tool To Track Stimulus Money
For the third stimulus check: It’s worth visiting the IRS’ online portal designed to track the status of your 2021 payment. Generally, it should tell you when your check will be processed and how you’ll receive it: for example, as a paper check in the mail. If the Get My Payment tool doesn’t give you information you can understand or says your check is on the way and you haven’t received it, you may need to eventually request a payment trace or file for a recovery rebate credit.
For the first or second payment: If you can’t find the letter sent by the IRS, you’ll need to create an online profile with the IRS to see your status. For any problems, you may need to issue a payment trace or file for a recovery rebate credit, even if you don’t normally submit a tax return. Here’s more information about finding the amount of your first and second payments.
