How Do I Get It

Why haven’t I received my stimulus check yet? Answering your frequently-asked questions
  • The stimulus payments will be processed by the IRS.
  • If you have already filed a 2019 tax return, you will get the stimulus payment automatically. You will receive it in the same form as your tax refund. If you requested direct deposit, then the stimulus will be direct deposited. If you requested a paper check, then the stimulus will be mailed to the same address on your 2019 tax return.
  • If you entered your information into the IRS non-filer portal earlier in 2020, you will get the stimulus payment automatically. You do not have to do anything.
  • If you receive one of the following benefits, you will get the stimulus payment automatically. You do not have to do anything.
  • Social Security
  • Note: Instead of a check, some people will get a debit card mailed to them in a white envelope. The envelope has the U.S. Department of the Treasury seal on it. See this factsheet to learn what the debit card looks like and how to use it.
  • Payment Status Not Available

Frustrated taxpayers also about their inability to track when and how they would be getting their money. Some posted an image of the message they received after entering their information: Payment Status Not Available.

There are a number of reasons the tool cant check the status of a stimulus payment, the IRS said.

    • You arent eligible for a payment.
    • Your payment is based on your status as a Social Security, disability, Veterans Affairs or Railroad Retirement beneficiary. In this case, the IRS will use your SSA or RRB Form 1099 payment information. Your payment information isnt available on the Get My Payment tool.
    • You have not filed a 2018 or 2019 federal tax return.
    • You filed your 2019 return, but it hasnt been fully processed.
    • You used the non-filers tool, but the information you entered is still being processed.
    • Theres a problem verifying your identity when answering the security questions.

Others say they are getting that message even though they do not fall into any of these categories. Information on the site is updated only once a day, so checking more than once in a 24-hour period wont yield a different result. The IRS says people who qualify for a payment will receive it by mail if they do not get it from direct deposit.

Im On Social Security And Havent Gotten My Payment Yet Why

The first batch of payments to Social Security recipientsmore than 19 million payments made to beneficiaries who didnt file 2019 or 2020 tax returns and did not use the non-filers tool last yearwent out on April 7.

Payments were delayed while Social Security and the IRS worked out the details of transferring beneficiary data to the IRS, which is handling payment processing.

If you used the non-filers tool to get a stimulus payment in 2020, your payment may have already been issued.

    What Is A Plus

A plus-up supplemental payment is a new or larger payment you may be eligible to get if you recently submitted your 2020 tax return and your income or number of dependents changed.

For example, if you received a partial third stimulus payment based on your 2019 income, but your income declined in 2020, you may receive another payment to make up the difference between the two amounts. Your original third stimulus payment and your plus-up payment together will equal the amount youre eligible to receive based on your 2020 tax return.

On April 1, the IRS announced that new payment batches include supplemental payments for these people. As of late June 9, more than 8 million plus-up payments have been issued.

How Your Return Can Help With A $1400 Stimulus Check

Since March, the government has been deploying new batches of stimulus checks weekly.

Each of those rounds has included payments to people that were prompted by the IRS processing their 2020 tax returns.

That goes for people who do not typically file tax returns, but did so this year in order to get their $1,400 checks. Once those forms were processed, the IRS sent their payments.

In addition, people who already received their third stimulus check, and who are due more money after the IRS completed their latest return, received “plus-up” payments from the agency.

That could happen if their financial circumstances changed since their 2019 return, such as their income declining last year.

Not everyone needs to file a federal return in order to get their stimulus checks. If you receive federal benefits and do not typically file, you should get your payment automatically. However, you may want to file a return in order to submit information on eligible dependents.

In addition, if you used the IRS online non-filer tool last year, you should not have to resubmit your information.

The non-filer tool has not been reopened this year. Instead, the IRS has urged people who it does not already have on record to file tax returns, which can help the agency evaluate whether or not you may be eligible for other tax credits.

Problem #: My Economic Impact Payment Has Not Been Processed

If your stimulus payment has not yet been processed, be patient.

The IRS will continue to issue $1,400 stimulus payments throughout 2021. The agency says it will regularly update recipients status information on its Get My Payment tool and recommends checking it daily for updates on payment status.

What If The Irs Sends The Incorrect Amount

The IRS has said that the third stimulus payments will be based on 2020 income. So if you receive a payment before the agency processes last year’s return but you qualify for more money based on your 2020 income, the agency will top off your stimulus payment at some point this year.

Taxpayers won’t have to do anything to get all of the money they are eligible for, except file their 2020 returns. If you qualify for less money in 2020, you will not owe any money back.

This is also true for people who have a child during the year, or who receive an incorrect payment amount.

The agency has so far not given a date for when it expects to make these additional payments.

Still Haven’t Received Your $1400 Stimulus Check Do This Now

Several Reasons Why You Have Not Yet Received Your $1400 Stimulus Check!

While the IRS continues to pump out more stimulus payments from President Joe Bidens coronavirus relief bill each week, roughly seven percent of eligible recipients still havent received the third round of direct relief.

While the IRS continues to pump out more stimulus payments from President Joe Bidens coronavirus relief bill each week, roughly seven percent of eligible recipients still havent received the third round of direct relief.

So far, the agency has sent out 167 million payments, worth $391 billion, since March. But millions of Americans are still waiting for the $1,400 payment to hit their bank accounts or arrive in their mailboxes through a paper check or prepaid debit card.

Here are some tips for people who may still be waiting for the direct payments.

Use the IRS Get My Payment tracker tool

The Get My Payment tool is an online portal that allows stimulus check recipients to check the status of their relief payment. The portal will indicate whether the payment has been processed and how the recipient will receive the relief, which could be by direct deposit, paper check or prepaid debit card.

If the tool doesnt offer users this information, the recipient may need to request a payment trace or file for a recovery rebate credit.

Wait for a paper check if there was a problem with the direct deposit

It is encouraged to call bank providers or tax preparers in the event of a closed bank account.

    File a payment trace

You Moved Or Changed Your Bank Account

If you recently switched bank accounts, the IRS probably doesnt have your new account information on file meaning it’s not able to send you a direct deposit. You’ll have to wait for the tax agency to mail you a paper check or debit card, and that will take weeks.

A similar issue applies if you moved recently and normally receive tax refunds through the mail. If the IRS unsuccessfully tries to send your payment to your old address, the check will need to be reissued and you’ll face an extra-long wait.

You can check on the status of your stimulus check by using the IRS’Get My Payment tool. And though you cant update your information there, you can potentially identify why your payment has been delayed.

Will The Irs Reload A Prior Pre

Some people who received one or both of their first two stimulus payments on a pre-paid debit card may wonder if the IRS will reload that card with the $1,400 for the latest round of payments. The answer is no, the IRS says.

If the IRS now has bank account information for you, it will send the money via direct deposit. If not, it will either issue a check or a pre-paid debit card, but the latter will come in the form of a new card, the tax agency said.

People should look for a white envelope with the return address “Economic Impact Payment Card” accompanied by a U.S. Treasury Department seal. The card says “Visa” on the front, and the issuing bank, MetaBank, on the back.

    Millions Remain Waiting For Money

But nearly 30 million Social Security and Supplemental Security Income beneficiaries are waiting to get money through their Economic Impact Payments, according to a letter sent by leaders on the House Ways and Means Committee on Wednesday.

“Because SSA has inexplicably not sent the necessary payment files to the Internal Revenue Service, tens of millions of beneficiaries have yet to receive their desperately needed EIPs,” according to Chairman Richard Neal, a Massachusetts Democrat, and oversight subcommittee chairman Bill Pascrell Jr., a New Jersey Democrat, and others.

Wednesday’s letter followed another scathing commentary Monday when Democrats on the House Ways and Means Committee criticized both the commissioners of the IRS and the Social Security Administration about the handling of the latest stimulus rollout.

“Some of our most vulnerable seniors and persons with disabilities, including veterans who served our country with honor, are unable to pay for basic necessities while they wait for their overdue payments,” according to the letter signed by Neal, Pascrell Jr. and others.

The letter to IRS Commissioner Charles Rettig and Social Security Commissioner Andrew Saul expressed alarm that most Social Security, Supplemental Security Income, Railroad Retirement Board and Veterans Affairs beneficiaries who are not required to file a tax return had not yet received their payments.

What Can I Do If I Have Not Received My Eip Money By Those Deadlines

COVID Stimulus Checks: What to Know About 2nd Round of ...

If you have not received all or some portion of your Economic Impact Payments by the deadlines above, you will have to file a 2020 tax return and claim these amounts. You claim them on line 30 of the 2020 Form 1040 as a “Recovery Rebate Credit“. This is another name for the EIP stimulus payments. If you did not get all or a portion of the EIP payments in advance, then you can claim them on line 30 of your tax return for 2020.

Stimulus Checks Arent Distributed At The Same Time

Stimulus checks arent distributed all at once. That means your neighbor, cousin or sister may get a stimulus check before you. If you have a bank account on file with the IRS, youre likely to get your stimulus check faster through direct deposit. However, if you dont, then it may take longer to get a paper stimulus check or debit card. Like the first and second stimulus checks, the third stimulus check will be sent in batches over time. If you get Social Security benefits, you also may not have received a stimulus check yet. Why? Until this week, the U.S. Social Security Administration didnt share contact information for 30 million Social Security recipients with the IRS, which has delayed the disbursement of their stimulus checks.

Get My Payment Says Payment Issued But I Haven’t Received It

The IRS says that it may take three to four weeks to receive a check after it’s mailed. If it has been weeks since the Get My Payment tool says the payment was mailed, and you haven’t received it, you can request a payment trace. The IRS will research what happened to your check if the check wasn’t cashed, you will need to claim the “Recovery Rebate Credit” on your next tax return. If the IRS finds that the check was cashed, you’ll receive a claim package from the Treasury Department with a copy of the cashed check and instructions on filing a claim.

Similarly, if the Get My Payment tool says your payment was direct-deposited, but the money doesn’t show in your bank account after five days, first check with your bank. If the bank says it hasn’t received a payment, you can request a payment trace.

To request a payment trace, call 800-919-9835 or fill out IRS Form 3911, Taxpayer Statement Regarding Refund.

    • Check your bank statements. If you had your payments direct deposited, you can find the amount of your first, second, and third stimulus check using your bank statements. They should be labeled as IRS TREAS 310 and have a code of either TAXEIP1 , TAXEIP2 , or TAXEIP3 .

    • Create an account on IRS.gov/account. You can view your stimulus check amounts under the Tax Records tab. Here’s why you may not have received your stimulus check yet

The amount of money that you’re going to get back depend on what your last tax return was. If you haven’t filed yet this year, they will calculate on your 2018 filing. You can find out on 8b of the 2019 1040 federal tax form, according to Cnet. Taxes are not due yet, so if you haven’t filed, don’t stress — the due date has been moved to July 15th.

What If Dont Normally File A Tax Return

The IRS said this third round of stimulus will be based on tax year 2019 or 2020 information, or information obtained by the Social Security Administration and Veterans Affairs Administration. If you are a non-filer who also does not receive a SSA or VA benefit, then use the Non-filer Sign-up tool, described below.

The IRS recently launched a new Non-filer Sign-up tool on its website. Although this non-filer portal is labeled as for non-filers claiming advance payments of the child tax credit, it is also available for others, including single individuals and people experiencing homelessness. It will allow individuals to provide their information to the IRS so that they can receive any of the three Economic Impact Payments , also known as stimulus payments, that they may be missing. If an individual did not get the full amounts of the EIPs, they may use this tool if they:

    • Are not required to file a 2020 tax return, didnt file a 2020 tax return, and dont plan to, and
    • Want to claim the 2020 Recovery Rebate Credit and get their third EIP.

The new Non-filer Sign-up tool is for people who did not file a tax return for 2019 or 2020, and who did not use the IRS Non-filers tool last year to register for Economic Impact Payments.
