Is Any Action Needed By Social Security Beneficiaries Railroad Retirees And Those Receiving Veterans Benefits Who Are Not Typically Required To File A Tax Return
Most Social Security retirement and disability beneficiaries, railroad retirees and those receiving veterans benefits do not need take any action to receive a payment. Earlier this year, the IRS worked directly with the relevant federal agencies to obtain the information needed to send out the new payments the same way benefits for this group are normally paid. For eligible people in this group who didnt receive a payment for any reason, they can file a 2020 tax return.

But once tax returns have been completed, the IRS will automatically issue a $1,400 check.

Why You May Not Have Gotten All Your Stimmy Money
The third-round stimulus payments, authorized by the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 and signed into law on March 11, 2021, were sent from March through December last year. Round 3 of the so-called stimmies provided a maximum credit of $1,400 per person, including all qualifying dependents claimed on a tax return.
A married couple with two qualifying dependents, for example, are eligible to receive a maximum credit of $5,600, depending on income limits. And if you brought a baby into the world last year, youll be able to file for up to $1,400 that youre owed for your new family member if you claim the child as a dependent.
The size of the credit, however, gets reduced for single filers with adjusted gross income of more than $75,000 and for married couples filing jointly with earnings of more than $150,000. For heads of household, the credit is reduced between $120,000 and $112,500.
The credit disappears entirely for individuals with AGI above $80,000 and for married couples filing jointly who earn more than $160,000. Heads of household with incomes of more than $120,000 also dont get the stimulus check. Most eligible Americans have already received the payments, according to the IRS.
Your Contact Information Has Changed Since Your 2019 Tax Filing
According to moving tools and analysis company MYMOVE study of USPS change-of-address request data, 16 million Americans temporarily moved during the pandemicif thats you, the IRS may not have your latest address on file.
And even if you filed your taxes early this year, the IRS may not have processed your 2020 tax return. About 6.7 million tax returns are stuck in a backlog waiting to be processed, according to a March 12 story from The Washington Post.
If your mailing address has changed, theres several ways you can notify the IRS of your new contact information:
- Include the new address when you file your 2020 taxes and be sure to notify your tax preparer if you use one.
- Fill out Form 8822, Change of Address and/or a Form 8822-B, Change of Address or Responsible Party Business and send them to the address shown on the forms.
- Send a letter with your full name, old and new addresses, Social Security number, Individual Taxpayer Identification Number or Employer Identification Number, and signature to the IRS address on your most recent tax returns.
If the government already sent your payment to an old address, youll have to wait until its returned to the IRS and see if you can update your information via Get My Payment.

When Will I Get The Payment And What Can I Do If I Dont Get It
The IRS is sending the third round of payments out to American families, but we are not sure how long this will take. We believe the IRS will continue to send the third round of payments until December 2021. Because this third round of stimulus is actually an advance payment of a tax credit for tax year 2021, you should be able to claim this credit on your 2021 tax return if you do not get it by the end of 2021.
Why You Did Not Qualify For A Stimulus Check

Several people have commented that they have not received or not gotten the correct amount on their stimulus checks. The IRS has provided the following reasons

- You CANNOT be claimed as a dependent on someone elses return. This includes as a child child, student or older dependent.
- You dont have a valid Social Security number and/or are a nonresident alien.
- You filed Form 1040-NR or Form 1040NR-EZ, Form 1040-PR or Form 1040-SS for 2019. These are quick filing forms, but you need a standard filing

Why Is The Second Stimulus Check Only $600
Good question. The original $1,200 number was thought to be linked to federal minimum wage. It roughly equals $7.25 an hour times 160 hours of work in a month. The $600 sum is half of that, of course, but also matches the weekly enhanced unemployment checks approved by the CARES Act earlier this year.
The two parties have spent months fighting over the overall cost of the package and how targeted the relief should be. Just days before Democrats and Republicans agreed on the final package, as negotiations were winding down, Trump was privately pushing for stimulus checks of up to $2,000.
Earlier that week, the Post reported that lawmakers decreased the bill’s unemployment benefits in order to provide stimulus check money.
The tradeoff immediately sparked backlash from Democrats on social media. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., criticized the situation as “barbaric,” while Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., tweeted that “the notion that Congress cant give Americans direct checks AND unemployment benefits is a lie.” The $600 figure, meanwhile, was widely deemed as insufficient and inspired severaloutragedstimuluscheckmemes.
Will I Receive Another Stimulus Payment
Individual adults with adjusted gross income on their 2019 tax returns of up to $75,000 a year will receive a $600 payment, and a couple earning up to $150,000 a year will get twice that amount. There is also a $600 payment for each child for families who meet those income requirements. People who file taxes using the head of household status and make up to $112,500 also get $600, plus the additional amount for children.
People with incomes just above these levels will receive a partial payment that declines by $5 for every $100 in income.
Did you make much less money in 2020 than 2019, thus making you eligible for this newest payment even though your 2019 income makes you appear ineligible? When you file your 2020 return, there will be a way for you to claim this money then in the form of a refundable tax credit.

Will I Get A Dependent Payment
If youre not sure if you qualify for a dependent payment for the first stimulus check, theres a way to check. You can use the Get My Payment tool on the IRS website, which can tell you the status of your dependent payments. Like the Non-Filer tool, the Get My Payment tool is free to use. Under the Cares Act, dependent payments were only available to dependents 17 and younger, which means that many high school students, college students and adult dependents were not eligible for dependent payments.
Senate Vs House Income Caps
Senate check income limits | |
Full payment below $150,000 cutoff at $160,000 | Full payment below $150,000 cutoff at $200,000 |
According to the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy, 60% of Americans would receive a full payment under both the House and the Senate plans. The Senate change, however, would affect the highest earners, where more than 11 million adults and over 4 million children would be blocked from receiving a check for any amount.
The new income cap limits are lower than that for the $600 check — at $87,000 for an individual, $124,500 for a head of household and $174,000 for families — but the amount of money that people who qualify could receive might be more than twice the amount of that second check.

New Stimulus Check Cutoff Means Millions Won’t Get The Full $1400 Here’s How
The Senate passed a new version of the stimulus bill, which lowers the income limit for millions of people. Here’s exactly what that means.
A targeted stimulus check could mean some people could get $1,400 and others could get nothing.
The nearly $2 trillion stimulus bill passed the Senate on Saturday, picking up some significant amendments to the provisions for federal unemployment insurance and the third stimulus check, which mean tens of millions of people will get less money than they may’ve expected.
For the new stimulus checks specifically, the $1,400 per person maximum remains , but an effort to “target” the payments would result in stricter rules around an income cutoff. That means the payment will get smaller quicker for any amount you make above a certain level, and fewer people overall would receive a partial payment. More people wouldn’t qualify for a check.
Though the House will still need to pass the amended bill , it’s projected to do so without additional amendments, which means the current legislation is likely to be final. We’ll explain how your yearly income fits in to the new, targeted plan. For more information, here’s when a third stimulus check could arrive, how tax season could complicate your stimulus payment and what to know about qualifications for a third stimulus check. Didnt Receive Your $600 Stimulus Money Prepaid Debit Cards Going Out This Week
Starting this week, the Treasury Department and the Internal Revenue Service are sending approximately 8 million second Economic Impact Payments by prepaid debit card.
These EIP Cards follow the millions of payments already made by direct deposit and the ongoing mailing of paper checks that are delivering the second round of Economic Impact Payments as rapidly as possible.
For those who dont receive a direct deposit, they should watch their mail for either a paper check or a prepaid debit card. To speed delivery of the payments to reach as many people as soon as possible the Treasurys Bureau of Fiscal Service is sending payments out by prepaid debit card.
IRS and Treasury urge eligible people who dont receive a direct deposit to watch their mail carefully during this period. The prepaid debit card, called the Economic Impact Payment card, is sponsored by the Bureau of the Fiscal Service and is issued by Treasurys financial agent, MetaBank, N.A.
Taxpayers should note that the form of payment for the second mailed EIP may be different than the first mailed EIP. Some people who received a paper check last time might receive a prepaid debit card this time, and some people who received a prepaid debit card last time may receive a paper check.
You Have Fewer Dependents Now Than You Did Before

For the third check, the definition of a dependent you can claim on your taxes has changed. You can get a $1,400 payment for any qualifying dependent this time around.
Yet, if you don’t have the same number of dependents for whatever reason, you might not receive their share in your final check. For example, if someone has died, the IRS expected you to return any money you were paid on their behalf — but again, it does depend on which tax return the IRS uses.
For the first two checks, age was an important factor in how much stimulus money a household got. Older adults are in many cases entitled to their own stimulus check. In the first round of direct payments, households were given an extra $500 for each “child dependent,” which Congress defined as a legal minor, 16 years old or younger.
The IRS’ definition of a child dependent for your taxes isn’t the same one used for the first two stimulus checks.
Did you get the right amount of stimulus check money? A missing dependent could explain the discrepancy for some.
