Why Am I Not Getting A Second Stimulus Check

How Will The Stimulus Check Payments Be Made By The Irs

YES!! IT PASSED!!! But Why You Might Not Get A Second Stimulus Check Stimulus Package Update

The IRS has confirmed that payments for most working Americans are expected to be calculated and deposited or mailed via check based on 2018 or 2019 federal tax filing payment details. Most people wont need to take any action and the IRS will calculate and automatically send the economic stimulus payment to those eligible. The Treasury department, under which the IRS falls has also created a website/portal for those who are not required to file U.S. income taxes or who have to change payment information .

For those who have not yet filed their return for 2019, the IRS will use information from their 2018 tax filing to calculate the payment. The economic impact payment will be deposited directly into the same banking account reflected on the last valid return filed. So if your 2018 information is out of date or your income situation changed in 2019, make sure you file, even if you have no taxes due .

Youre Getting A Paper Check Instead Of Direct Deposit

Most stimulus checks will be distributed directly into your bank account through direct deposit. If you dont have a bank account or havent provided your bank account information to the IRS, then you may get a paper check or debit card. You can track your stimulus check with the Get My Payment tool, which can tell you whether your stimulus check has been sent and how you will get paid.

Q How Much Was The Second Stimulus Check For

A. Your second stimulus check depended on your 2019 income. The full amount was $600 per individual, $1,200 per couple, and $600 per qualifying child under the age of 17. For expats to qualify for the full second stimulus check, you must have had $75,000 or less in income if you filed as single, $112,500 or less if you filed as head of household, or $150,000 or less if you filed jointly with your spouse or as a qualifying widow. Youd also then qualify for a $600 payment per qualifying child.

For those above this income level, your stimulus check amount would lower $5 for each $100 your AGI exceeded the above thresholds.

Q. Did I have to pay back the amount I get?

A. No.

Q. Will this affect my 2020 tax return?

A. It could only help your 2020 return. If you are eligible for more stimulus than you were awarded, you may be able to claim it as a credit on your return that either decreases your tax liability or increases your refund. If youre eligible for less or received the full amount, you dont have to pay it back and it wont affect your return.

Q. Will I owe tax on this second stimulus check in 2021 or have to pay it back?

A. No, this is considered a tax credit, not income, so you will not need to pay taxes on it in 2021 or pay it back.

Q. Im retired overseas and dont file a tax return did I qualify for the second stimulus check?

Q. What if I didnt have an SSN but filed a U.S. return. Did I get to take advantage of the second stimulus check?

When will the New Stimulus Checks Come? [Full FAQ on All]

Yes. For the third stimulus check, any household member that has an SSN qualifies for a payment.

This is different than the first and second stimulus check, where at least one tax filer must have an SSN for the household to claim the stimulus checks. That adult with the SSN and any qualifying children with SSNs will get the stimulus checks.

My Third Stimulus Payment Was Too Low

Many individuals and families will find that their third stimulus checks are lower than they thought. That could be because people who make over a certain amount have part of the $1,400 payment taken away. For example, single people who make over $75,000 in adjusted gross income will have their second stimulus checks reduced by 28% of the income over $75,000. Married people filing jointly and heads of household will have their payments reduced by a similar amount.

The third stimulus payment is technically based on your 2021 income, but the IRS is using your 2020 tax return to estimate it. If your income goes down in 2021, making you eligible for a payment, or a higher payment, you’ll be able to file a tax return for your 2021 taxes and you’ll receive the stimulus money you didn’t getâit’s called a recovery rebate credit.

Getting A Missing Check Can Be Difficult But Worth The Trouble

by Adam Shell, AARP, February 4, 2022

Nobody wants to leave money on the table, especially a stimulus payment from the U.S. government that theyre eligible for but didnt receive. In late January the Internal Revenue Service announced that all third-round stimulus checks had been sent. But the IRS also noted that not all eligible Americans received the full amount theyre entitled to.

The good news? Theres still time to get whats owed to you.

Uncle Sam which issued 175 million third-round payments, totaling over $400 billion, through the end of 2021 reminded people that they can claim any remaining stimulus money theyre entitled to but didnt get by claiming the Recovery Rebate Credit on their 2021 income tax return.

The rebate, which comes as a tax credit of up to $1,400 per eligible person on your 2021 return, will either lower the amount of tax you owe or boost the size of your refund. The golden prize of a tax return is a tax credit, says Mark Steber, chief tax information officer at Jackson Hewitt, a tax preparation service. The Recovery Rebate Credit is a dollar-for-dollar tax-liability offset.

What To Do If A Family Member Died Since Last Filing Your Taxes

It depends on which tax return the IRS uses . For example, if the IRS goes by your 2019 tax return, it’s likely you’d get to keep the amount you received for the deceased person. With the first stimulus check, the IRS asked people to return the money for someone who had died since the previous tax filing. With the second check, if your spouse died in 2020 and your AGI was less than $112,500 a year, you would be eligible for the full $600 amount.

Who Is Eligible For The Second Stimulus Check

Eligibility is primarily based on four requirements:

1. Income: The income requirements to receive the full payment are the same as the first stimulus check. There is no minimum income needed to qualify for the payment. Households with adjusted gross income up to $75,000 for individuals will receive the full payment. This stimulus payment starts to phaseout for people with higher earnings. The second stimulus check maximum income limit is lower than the first stimulus check. Single filers who earned more than $87,000 in 2019 are ineligible for the second stimulus check.

View the chart below to compare income requirements for the first and second stimulus checks.

Income to Receive Full Stimulus Payment First Stimulus Check Maximum Income Limit Second Stimulus Check Maximum Income Limit
Single Filer
$136,500 $124,500

2. Social Security Number: This requirement differs from the original eligibility for the first stimulus check. Originally under the first stimulus check, if you were married filing jointly, both spouses needed valid Social Security numbers . If one spouse had an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number , then both spouses were ineligible for the stimulus check. For married military couples, the spouse with an SSN could still get the stimulus check for themselves but not the other spouse with an ITIN.

After you receive your stimulus payment, you should also get a notice from the IRS in the mail which says the amount you were paid. If you receive this notice, but havent gotten your stimulus payment, its possible that it was lost or stolen.

In this case, you can start a trace by contacting the IRS. If the check wasnt cashed, youll receive a replacement, and if it was cashed, you will have to file a claim with the Bureau of the Fiscal Service youll receive instructions on how to do this. Keep in mind that you need to wait until a certain amount of time has passed to start a trace, like four weeks if the payment was mailed, or six weeks if it was mailed but you have a forwarding address on file with your post office.

Child Or Dependent Qualification For The $500 Payment

Several readers have asked questions around the $500 child dependent additional stimulus payment. To get this payment you must have filed a 2018 or 2019 tax return and claimed the child as dependent ANDthe child must be younger than 17-years-old at the end of 2020. They must also be related to you by blood, marriage, or adoption . There is no limit to the number of dependents who can qualify for the additional $500 in one household.

This age limit is much younger than what is used by the IRS in the qualifying child test where a child must be younger than 19 years old or be a student younger than 24 years old as of the end of the calendar year. Hence the confusion being caused by this. So just remember if your child or eligible dependent is 17 or over you cannot claim the stimulus payment for them.

College Kids and High School Seniors

The younger than 17 yr old requirement has ruled out several thousand college students and high school kids who are older than 17, but still being claimed as a dependent by their parents on their federal tax return.

However if you are a college student AND filed a recent tax return you can qualify for a standard/adult stimulus check per the above eligibility rules. But note as soon as you file a return you cannot be claimed as a dependent by others, which means they lose certain other tax benefits and credits.

I Got A Payment Status Not Available Message

Many checking on their second stimulus check were seeing a message that said “Payment Status #2 – Not Available.” The IRS has indicated that these individuals will not receive a stimulus check by direct deposit or mail and they will have to file their 2020 tax return to claim their “Recovery Rebate Credit.” See below for instructions on claiming the rebate on your tax return.

These messages have now disappeared and will be replaced by information about the third payment.

You Earn Too Much Money

The amount of your stimulus check is tied to your adjusted gross income, or AGI. If your AGI is $75,000 or less , you’ll get the full payment. If your AGI is over that limit, you’ll get a smaller second stimulus check. The number gets reduced by 5% for every dollar you earn above the threshold. As the Tax Foundation points out, this means dependent-less Americans who make $87,000 or more will receive nothing.

What to do: Again, there’s not much you can do here. Maybe make a plan to vote in any upcoming elections so you can influence who makes these policies in the future.

Your Bank Account Is Overdrawn

The New York Times reported that several major banks, including Wells Fargo and Bank of America, have vowed to “zero out” customers’ overdrawn accounts so they can use their stimulus money. But smaller banks may not be offering the same leeway . Synovus, for example, writes on its website that “if your account is overdrawn at the time the payment posts to your account, Synovus will refund up to three days of overdraft fees. Then your overdrawn balance will automatically be deducted, as with any direct deposit.”

What to do: Contact your bank and ask what your options for relief are.
