Who Will Get Stimulus Checks First

Am I Eligible To Get A Stimulus Check

Who will get stimulus checks first?

You are eligible to get a stimulus check and will receive the FULL amount if you filed taxes and have an adjusted gross income of:

  • up to $75,000 if single or you filed taxes married filing separately.
  • up to $112,500 if you filed as head of household
  • up to $150,000 if married and you filed a joint tax return.

Not Everyone Is Eligible

It’s important to note that the rules are a little different for this direct payment, so you can’t assume you’ll receive a payment even if you were eligible for the first two stimulus checks.

The income limits to be eligible for the full payment are the same as before. You’ll get the full $1,400 if your income is $75,000 or under as a single filer or $150,000 as a married joint filer. However, if your income is above $80,000 as a single or $160,000 as a married joint filer, you will not receive any money.

This differs from the past relief bills. Under the CARES Act, for example, individuals could get partial payments with incomes up to $99,000 and married joint filers could receive them with earnings up to $198,000 — or higher if they had eligible dependents.

If your income dropped in 2020, making you eligible for the payment when you wouldn’t be based on 2019 data, this is also another reason to file your 2020 taxes ASAP.

For those who are eligible, though, you can start watching your bank account for the money in the coming weeks — or the mail, if the IRS doesn’t have your bank details.

If I Owe Debt To Someone Can They Take My Stimulus Check

Child Support can be taken from your Stimulus Check. The CARES Act protects stimulus payments from being reduced to pay certain debts owed to federal and state governments for all other reasons. But, it does not provide clear protection from debt collectors garnishing the money from your bank account. If this happens to you, you should contact an attorney.

If you dont owe taxes, there is no penalty for filing late. If you owe taxes, you may be subject to penalties and fines for not filing or not paying taxes. The government may reduce your tax refund to pay for any taxes you owe and other federal and state debts.

How Will I Get My Payment If I Got A Refund Anticipation Check Or Refund Anticipation Loan When I Filed My Taxes

The IRS will attempt to deliver your payment to the account information provided on your tax return. Some RALs and RACs are issued through debit cards. If the card is still active, you will receive your payment on the card. If the account or card is no longer active, the deposit will be rejected, and the IRS will send a paper check to the address on the tax return.

You can request a payment trace to track where and how your payment was delivered. You should only request a payment trace if you received IRS Notice 1444 showing that your first stimulus check was issued or if your IRS account shows your payment amount and you havent received your first stimulus check. See Question 24 to learn more about how to request a payment trace.

What About The Second Stimulus Check Amount And Dates

Congress approved another economic relief bill at the end of last year, and the second round of stimulus check payments began sending as early as Dec. 29, 2020. This payment capped out at $600 per person, and another $600 per qualifying child dependent. Youre A Member Of A Mixed

Under the CARES Act, U.S. adults with a Social Security number werent eligible for a stimulus check if they were in a mixed-status household, meaning one partner was undocumented or didnt have an SSN. A recent law change, however, scraps that rule. Now, individuals would be able to receive both payments retroactively meaning both the first and second stimulus payment for the taxpayers and qualifying children of the family who have work-eligible SSNs.

Youll want to reconcile that first amount with your Recovery Rebate Credit, if you didnt receive it.

How Much Will My Stimulus Check Be

The amount of your stimulus checks varies depending on your family status and income.

The first stimulus check was worth up to $1,200 per eligible adult and $500 per dependent child under 17. Single adults received as much as $1,200. Married couples with no children got up to $2,400. Married couples with two children received up to $3,400.

If your income exceeds $75,000 as a single filer, $112,500 as a head of household, or $150,000 as a married joint filer, your check amount was reduced at a rate of $5 per extra $100 earned. So if you made $76,000 as a single filer, your check would be reduced by $50.

Eligibility phased out for single filers with incomes above $99,000, heads of household with incomes above $136,500, and married joint filers with incomes above $198,000 for their own payments. However, some still received dependent payments. Married joint filers with two children and $199,000 in income would lose their own $2,400 payments but receive $950 of the $1,000 in dependent payments.

The second check provided $600 per eligible adult and child dependent. The phase-out rules worked the same way. However, because the check was for a smaller amount, eligibility disappeared entirely at a lower income threshold. Singles with incomes above $87,000 received no payment. Nor did heads of household with incomes above $124,500 — unless they received some dependent funds. And married joint filers lost eligibility for their own payments at $174,000.

When will I get my coronavirus stimulus check?

The IRS will post all key information on IRS.gov/coronavirus as soon as it becomes available.

The IRS has a reduced staff in many of its offices but remains committed to helping eligible individuals receive their payments expeditiously. Check for updated information on IRS.gov/coronavirus rather than calling IRS assistors who are helping process 2019 returns.

Will My Third Stimulus Check Be Reduced

The number the IRS will look at is your adjusted gross income for 2020, which is your income without retirement contributions but before your standard or itemized deductions are taken out. You can find your adjusted gross income on line 11 of your Form 1040 of your 2020 tax return. If you haven’t yet filed your 2020 tax return, the IRS will use your AGI from your 2019 tax return.

Single people who make between $75,000 and $80,000 will have their checks reduced by 28% of the amount over $75,000, and married people who file joint returns and make between 150,000 and $160,000 will have their checks reduced by the same percentage of the amount over $150,000. Taxpayers who file as head of household and make between $112,500 and $120,000 will have their checks reduced by a similar percentage of the amount over $112,500. The $1,400 that parents receive for each dependent is subject to the same reduction.

This means that single people who earned $80,000 or more in 2020 don’t qualify at all for the third stimulus checkcompared with $87,000 for the second stimulus check. Couples who earned $160,000 or more won’t get a third stimulus check, down from $174,000 for the second stimulus check. And a family of four that earned $160,000 or more also won’t receive a third stimulus check.

Coronavirus Stimulus Checks: Who Gets The Payment First

It is largely expected that the IRS would use the same tools and process to send out the next coronavirus stimulus checks payment as it did for the first one. In the first round, the payment was sent first to those who filed 2018 or 2019 tax returns, as well as have provided the agency with their direct deposit information.

There’s been a lot of talk about the macro issues affecting the market right now. From high inflation to dealing with the tail end of the pandemic, there is much for investors to consider. At the 2022 Sohn Investment Conference, Karen Karniol-Tambour of Bridgewater talked about corporate profits and how these macro factors and others Read More

If the same process is followed, then those who have already registered for direct deposit, either through their 2019 tax filing or before, would be the first to get the payment. As per the IRS, about 80 million people received the payment in the first week that the agency started disbursing it.

The next recipients were the social security beneficiaries who had shared their deposit information with the federal agencies. Then the IRS started sending out paper checks a week later. These checks were sent to those who didnt sign up for the direct deposit.

Then in mid-May, the agency started sending out the payment through Economic Impact Payment debit cards. These prepaid cards were sent to about 4 million people.

I Got A Phone Call Email Or Facebook Message About My Check Should I Answer

No. The US government isn’t calling, emailing, Facebook-messaging, or otherwise contacting you about your stimulus check and if someone does, it’s probably a scam.

The IRS generally gets in contact with taxpayers through snail mail, and in the case of stimulus checks, it doesn’t need to contact you for any type of additional information. If someone is calling or emailing you to confirm personal details or asking for bank information or money, it’s a scam.

Unfortunately, scammers are taking advantage of this opportunity to steal people’s identities, money, or both. These scams include fake stimulus checks that arrive immediately with an unusual denomination and ask you to verify the receipt online, as well as someone claiming that paying a “processing fee” will get your money to you sooner.
