Second Stimulus Check: Who Is Getting $600 How To Track Your Payment

The second round of stimulus checks may soon start arriving in bank accounts after President Donald Trump signed the $900 billion stimulus bill. The last-minute signing was a welcome development for the 6 in 10 people who have suffered a financial setback due to the pandemic, but millions of people may find themselves in for disappointment if they are among the groups who dont qualify for the payment.

Its most likely that the checks will amount to $600 for each adult and child, or half the amount of the $1,200 checks sent out earlier this year. The $600 per-person payments are part of the stimulus bill passed by Congress earlier this month and signed by Trump Sunday evening.

Still, Trump and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi have called for lawmakers to boost the amount to $2,000 per adult a request that Wall Street analysts say has a slim chance of moving forward, considering the additional hundreds of billions of dollars such a raise in the amount would cost.

Children will be eligible for the same benefit amount as eligible adults, and families with members of mixed immigration status with a valid Social Security number for one spouse are also eligible for the payments, unlike with the CARES Act rebates, noted the Tax Foundation.

Chief among them: Child dependents who are 17 years old and adults who are claimed as dependents on another persons tax return, such as is typical with college students.

Nonfilers: You May Need To File Your 2020 Tax Return This Year To Get The Right Stimulus Check Amount

With the second payment, the IRS used your 2019 tax returns to determine eligibility. Nonfilers, who weren’t required to file a federal income tax return in 2018 or 2019, may still be eligible to receive the first stimulus check under the CARES Act. And this group will qualify again. Here are reasons you might not have been required to file:

No. These payments are intended to help middle- and working-class Americans, so there are income limitations based on your tax filing status. For single people, the payments are reduced for those with Adjusted Gross Incomes above $75,000. For married couples filing jointly, the phase-out begins at an AGI of $150,000. For those filing as head of household, the reductions begin at $112,500.

The payments are reduced by $5 for every $100 in AGI over the above limits. As a result, a single tax filer would see no payments if they have an AGI of $87,000 or higher. For a married couple filing jointly with no children, their payment would phase out completely with an AGI of $174,000. If youre a head of household with two qualifying kids, your payment would phase out completely at $148,500.

Stimulus Checks: Marriages And Divorce

Are you eligible to receive a COVID stimulus check

Q. We got married in 2020 how does that affect the amount we will get?A. Filing as jointly married versus separate for 2020 wont change the total maximum stimulus amount and you wont have to repay any stimulus you already received. However, now that youre married, you should determine whether it makes more sense to file jointly or separately, and its possible that one spouse with a higher income could affect eligibility for the recovery rebate credit.

For example, lets say you and your spouse had AGI amounts of $35,000 and $105,000 respectively. As single filers, youd receive the full stimulus payment because your AGI of $35,000 is below the threshold, but your spouses AGI of $105,000 would be over the limit and wouldnt qualify for a stimulus payment. However, if you file jointly for 2020, your combined AGI of $140,000 is below the threshold for joint filers, so you could claim your spouses portion as the recovery rebate credit.

Those who get married in 2021 will have a similar situation when they file their 2021 return.

Q. How does a recent divorce affect my stimulus check?A. What if you were married and filed jointly on your tax return and have since become separated or divorced? If the IRS issued a payment based on a jointly filed return, you will allocate half of each payment to each spouse when you calculate your credit on your single status returns.

Q How Much Was The Second Stimulus Check For

A. Your second stimulus check depended on your 2019 income. The full amount was $600 per individual, $1,200 per couple, and $600 per qualifying child under the age of 17. For expats to qualify for the full second stimulus check, you must have had $75,000 or less in income if you filed as single, $112,500 or less if you filed as head of household, or $150,000 or less if you filed jointly with your spouse or as a qualifying widow. Youd also then qualify for a $600 payment per qualifying child.

For those above this income level, your stimulus check amount would lower $5 for each $100 your AGI exceeded the above thresholds.

Q. Did I have to pay back the amount I get?

A. No.

Q. Will this affect my 2020 tax return?

A. It could only help your 2020 return. If you are eligible for more stimulus than you were awarded, you may be able to claim it as a credit on your return that either decreases your tax liability or increases your refund. If youre eligible for less or received the full amount, you dont have to pay it back and it wont affect your return.

Q. Will I owe tax on this second stimulus check in 2021 or have to pay it back?

A. No, this is considered a tax credit, not income, so you will not need to pay taxes on it in 2021 or pay it back.

Q. Im retired overseas and dont file a tax return did I qualify for the second stimulus check?

Q. What if I didnt have an SSN but filed a U.S. return. Did I get to take advantage of the second stimulus check?

If You Added More Dependents Since The Last Time You Filed Taxes Will That Affect The Size Of Your Check

Yes. Parents of babies born or adopted in 2020: You can claim dependent benefits from the first two checks retroactively on your 2020 tax return. Because eligibility for the first two stimulus checks was based on your most recent tax return, babies born in 2020 were excluded from their parents’ stimulus check dependent benefits. But that money isn’t lost for good. The Recovery Rebate Credit, which you can claim as part of your 2020 tax return, will recoup that missing stimulus money, which totals up to $1,100 for qualifying babies .

You can do this now, and your eligibility for the third check will remain the same. All you have to do is file your taxes — and we recommend doing so sooner rather than later: If you get the third check before your new dependent becomes known to the IRS, the IRS will send a plus-up payment with the amount you now qualify for.

Stimulus Checks: Children And Dependents

Q. I had a baby in late 2020. Am I eligible for the child stimulus payments?A. If you had a baby in 2020, you are eligible for the $1,400 credit in 2021. This will be paid in an advance third stimulus payment if you filed your 2020 return by the time the payments were issued. If you didnt receive the first or second stimulus payment for your baby, you can claim the recovery rebate credit when you claim the child on your 2020 return.

Q. I have joint custody of my daughter with my ex-spouse, and I claimed her on my 2019 taxes . What do we need to know when my husband claims her?A. For the first and second payments, the spouse claiming the child in 2020 will claim the children and could receive the recovery rebate credit on the 2020 return.

However, for the third payment, divorced parents who alternate claiming their dependents each year, if an advance payment is received by one spouse for the dependent, no additional payment can be made for the same dependent on the other spouses return.

For example, if the payment is issued to Parent 1 because they claimed the child on their 2020 return, Parent 2 cannot claim the credit on their 2021 return even though they didnt receive the payment from Parent 1.

The second way is claiming the Recovery Rebate credit on your 2020 taxes, which you can do for the first or second payments. Youll receive the correct amount in the form of a tax credit that either lowers your tax bill or gets added to your refund.
