For the first and second relief packages, those SSI/SSDI recipients who did not have bank account information on file with the IRS, likely received those payments through a Direct Express card or as a paper check. The Social Security Administration no longer mails paper checks, although the U.S. Department of the Treasury does occasionally make some isolated exceptions to this rule. Otherwise, there are two ways you can receive your benefits:

    • You can request direct deposit. Payments will be automatically posted into your bank account on your payment date.
    • Your benefits will be paid to a Direct Express debit card if you dont have a bank account or you dont sign up for direct deposit. Payments are automatically posted to your card account on your payment day. The card works anywhere that takes Debit Mastercard and you can use it to get cash at ATMs, cash back at the grocery store, or to set up automatic payment of your monthly bills.

You must wait five days from the date of a direct deposit and four weeks for payments made by check. Do I Qualify For A Stimulus Check And How Much Will I Get

Texas is now on its 3rd round of stimulus checks. According to the IRS:

“Due to new income limitations, some individuals won’t be eligible for the third payment even if they received a first or second Economic Impact Payment or claimed a 2020 Recovery Rebate Credit.

Generally, someone is eligible for the full amount of the third Economic Impact Payment if they:

    • are a U.S. citizen or U.S. resident alien , and
    • are not a dependent of another taxpayer and
    • their adjusted gross income is not more than:
    • $150,000 if married and filing a joint return or if filing as a qualifying widow or widower
    • $112,500 if filing as head of household or
    • $75,000 for eligible individuals using any other filing status

Payments will be phased out or reduced — above those AGI amounts. This means people will not receive a payment if their AGI is at least:

    • $160,000 if married and filing a joint return or if filing as a qualifying widow or widower
    • $120,000 if filing as head of household
    • $80,000 for eligible individuals using any other filing status.”

Question: Can the IRS or other creditors take my third stimulus check if I owe back taxes, child support or other debts?

Answer: Your third stimulus check is not subject to reduction or offset to pay child support, federal taxes, state income taxes, debts owed to federal agencies, or unemployment compensation debts.

However, the American Rescue Plan doesn’t include additional protections that were included in the legislation authorizing the second round of stimulus checks. For example, second-round stimulus checks weren’t subject to garnishment by creditors or debt collectors. They couldn’t be lost in bankruptcy proceedings, either. The IRS also had to encode direct deposit payments so that banks knew they couldn’t be garnished.

Question: Can a dead person get a third stimulus check?

Answer: For the third round of stimulus checks, anyone who died before January 1, 2021, is not eligible to receive a payment. Essentially, they’re treated as if they don’t have a Social Security number.

There is an exception for military personnel. If a person who died before 2021 was married and a member of the U.S. military, the surviving spouse can still receive a third stimulus check even if he or she doesn’t have a Social Security number.

The extra $1,400 per dependent is also off the table if the parent died before 2021 or, in the case of a joint return, both parents died before then.

To get a payment, you must have a Social Security number. Nonresident aliens, people without a Social Security number, and adult dependents are not eligible.

The IRS is able to deliver payments by direct deposit much faster than mailing paper checks, and has urged people to submit direct-deposit information if it doesn’t already have yours. If you don’t provide bank information, the IRS will mail you a check.

    If you file taxes:

If you filed taxes in 2018 or 2019, that tax return must reflect an adjusted gross income below $99,000 for single filers, $136,500 for heads of household, and $198,000 for married filers.

If you file taxes but don’t usually get a tax refund, and therefore haven’t given the IRS your direct-deposit information, the IRS will send your payment by mail. There was a tool allowing filers to provide bank details, but the deadline has passed.

    If you don’t file taxes:

If you don’t file taxes but do get federal benefits, the government will use that information for your payment.

Americans who didn’t have a tax liability in 2018 or 2019 and don’t get Social Security payments, veterans benefits, or Supplemental Security Income should use a tool on the IRS website if they want to get paid. The deadline to submit your information is October 15, 2020.
