Hawaii: $300 Rebate Payments

In January, Gov. David Ige proposed sending a tax rebate to every Hawaii taxpayer. Taxpayers earning less than $100,000 per year would receive $300, and those earning more than $100,000 per year would receive $100. Dependents are eligible for the rebate, too.

The Hawaii legislature has approved the rebate, but details for distribution havent been released. Payments may begin processing in late August, per the state Department of Taxation.

How Much Will I Get

The amount depends on how much money you make. Full payments of $1,400 per person, including per dependent, will go to:

  • Individual taxpayers, or single filers, with an adjusted gross income of $75,000 or less
  • Heads of household with an AGI of $112,500 or less

If your income is higher than the limit, you are eligible for a reduced payment if you fall into these brackets:

  • Individual taxpayers with an AGI between $75,001 and $80,000
  • Heads of household with an AGI between $112,501 and $120,000

Anyone making more than these upper limits won’t get a stimulus check.

When Should I Receive The Stimulus Check

For those who have e-filed tax returns with the IRS in the past or otherwise provided the IRS with their direct deposit information, the IRS started to direct-deposit stimulus money last weekend.

Other individuals will receive their payments by mail. The IRS will start mailing some checks in mid-March. If you received the first or second stimulus check by direct deposit, there’s no guarantee you’ll receive the third check by direct deposit, especially if you filed your tax return after your first or second stimulus payment and didn’t use direct deposit for your tax refund.

How to Get and Track Your Stimulus Check

Social Security recipients, disability , Survivor Beneficiaries and Railroad Retirees who are not otherwise required to file a tax return will also be eligible for the stimulus payments, as long as their total income does not exceed the eligibility income limits above. The IRS in conjunction with the Treasury and Social Security Administration announced that recipients of Supplemental Security Income will automatically receive the $1200 Stimulus Check . See details here. This group of recipients will receive the stimulus check the same way they currently get their federal benefits in early May with no further action needed on their part.

However note that because the IRS has no information regarding dependent data for this group of recipients, the $500 kid dependent stimulus payment would not be automatically paid to this group. They need to use the non-filers tool on the IRS website to claim this.

For the third check, if you are a nonresident alien but are in a mixed-status family — where at least one member has a Social Security number — you are eligible for a payment.

Who Is Eligible To Receive A Stimulus Payment

Generally, U.S. citizens and green card holders are eligible for the stimulus payments. Also, the new law expands who is eligible for a stimulus payment.

In the first round of payments, joint returns of couples where only one member of the couple had a Social Security number were not eligible for a payment unless they were a member of the military. These families are now eligible to receive a stimulus payment, including the additional payment for their dependent children. The new law also made this expansion retroactive to the first round of stimulus payments. If your family did not receive the first stimulus payment because only one spouse had an SSN you can claim the Recovery Rebate Credit when you file your 2020 federal income tax return.
