What To Do If One Of The Three Stimulus Checks Hasnt Arrived
About 15 days after the IRS sends out your check, you should receive a letter from the agency confirming the payment. When the first round of stimulus checks went out last year, that letter included two hotline phone numbers because thousands of agents were available to help. But with the second and third rounds of checks, the IRS changed its tune, and these phone numbers may be disconnected.
Here are common scenarios that might indicate you need to look into your stimulus payment:
- If youre one of the millions of people who qualified for the first stimulus check but never got it.
- If your second stimulus check has still not arrived.
- If you got a letter from the IRS saying your third check was sent, but never received the payment. Or, if the IRS Get My Payment portal said your payment was sent, but you didnt get it.
- If you got some of your stimulus money from any payment, but not all of it.
You should also confirm youre qualified to get the stimulus payment, since not everyone who received a previous check is qualified this time. If you think its time to take action, read for more options.

What Does Need More Information Mean
Others may see a need more information message, which the tax agency said means the payment was returned to the IRS because the U.S. Postal Service wasnt able to deliver the check. In that case, people can use the Get My Payment site to provide the IRS with bank information but the tax agency said that only people who get the need more information message will be able to add their bank information to the portal.
Which Of My Dependents Qualify For The Third Stimulus Check
For the third stimulus check, all your dependents qualify, regardless of age. This means that for each child or adult dependent you have, you can claim an additional $1,400.
This is different from the first and second stimulus checks, which only allowed child dependents to get the additional payment.

What Is The 4th Stimulus Check
In 2022, if you do not claim a fourth stimulus check. You may receive a 4th stimulus check. Congress has decided to pass another round of stimulus checks for taxpayers who havent claimed one yet. But only if Congress has enough money left in their coffers by 2022. Once again, these are non-refundable tax credits that reduce your tax liability dollar-for-dollar. For example: if you owe $5,000 and have a $2,000 credit on your return. It would be as though you only owed $3,000 at tax time. If you qualify, your refund will increase!
As far as we know, no other stimulus program offers refunds once they go out. So take advantage of them while they last! What programs provide a stimulus? Millions of Americans get rebates thanks to two different federal government stimulus programs every year.
Checks Can Make An Impact Within Days
Sahm points out that stimulus checks have unique advantages compared with other forms of aid.
For one, they get to people quickly.
Research on the stimulus checks shows that people spend about half of the checks, and they do so quickly.Claudia Sahmmacroeconomic policy consultant
âThe bottom falls out in a recession, so itâs important to blunt the fall,â Sahm said. âChecks do that well. The second and third rounds went out within days.â
âNo other relief program came anywhere close.â
The payments also stimulate the economy in a short amount of time, she said. âResearch on the stimulus checks shows that people spend about half of the checks, and they do so quickly.â

Get My Payment Says Payment Issued But I Haven’t Received It
The IRS says that it may take three to four weeks to receive a check after it’s mailed. If it has been weeks since the Get My Payment tool says the payment was mailed, and you haven’t received it, you can request a payment trace. The IRS will research what happened to your check if the check wasn’t cashed, you will need to claim the “Recovery Rebate Credit” on your next tax return. If the IRS finds that the check was cashed, you’ll receive a claim package from the Treasury Department with a copy of the cashed check and instructions on filing a claim.
Similarly, if the Get My Payment tool says your payment was direct-deposited, but the money doesn’t show in your bank account after five days, first check with your bank. If the bank says it hasn’t received a payment, you can request a payment trace.
To request a payment trace, call 800-919-9835 or fill out IRS Form 3911, Taxpayer Statement Regarding Refund.
How To Claim Your Cash
Eligible Americans will be able to request a Recovery Rebate Credit at tax time to get their money they are owed from the IRS.
To be eligible for the full amount on the third round of checks, individuals need to have an adjusted gross income of $75,000 or less and married couples filing jointly need to have an AGI of $150,000 or less.
Those who qualify will be able to claim the child on your 2021 tax return – which will be filed in 2022.

Can You Use The Portal If You Didn’t File A Tax Return
You couldn’t use the “Get My Payment” tool to track the status of your first stimulus check if you didn’t file a 2018 or 2019 federal income tax return. However, there was another online tool that non-filers could use to give the IRS with the information it needed to process a payment.
The non-filers tool wasn’t used for second stimulus checks, though. Instead, if you didn’t file a 2019 tax return, and you didn’t use the non-filers tool to get your first-round payment, then you have to wait to claim your second stimulus check money as a Recovery Rebate credit on your 2020 return.
The IRS is not using the non-filers tool for third-round stimulus checks, either. As a result, if you don’t file a 2019 or 2020 tax return, you’ll have to claim any money you’re owed as a Recovery Rebate credit on your 2021 return, which you won’t file until next year. However, you can avoid having to wait until next year by filing a 2020 return before the May 17, 2021, deadline.
What To Do About Payment Scams
Though its uncommon, you may believe youve been scammed out of your payment or had it stolen. The Federal Trade Commission has a website where you can report a stolen stimulus check. If youre worried about theft, you can sign up for a free USPS service that will send you a picture of every piece of mail coming your way including your stimulus payment.

When You’ll Receive Your Payment
The final date to qualify has already passed for filers other than those with pending ITINs. If you have already filed, you don’t have to do anything.
If you have not received a payment by now, you will most likely receive a paper check. In addition, if you did not receive a refund with your tax return or owed money at the time of filing, you will receive a paper check.
Payments will go out based on the last 3 digits of the ZIP code on your 2020 tax return. Some payments may need extra time to process for accuracy and completeness. If your tax return is processed during or after the date of your scheduled ZIP code payment, allow up to 60 days after your return has processed. Please allow up to three weeks to receive the paper checks once they are mailed out.

How Can You Correct Mistakes
The IRS sends out Notice 1444 by mail within 15 days of making a direct deposit or sending a paper check. That letter will tell you the amount of your stimulus payment and how it was made. The letter also provides instructions on fixing issues with your payment.
Don’t Respond to Telephone Calls or Texts About Your Stimulus Check
The IRS will not call, text, or email you about your stimulus payment. The Federal Trade Commission is warning that thieves are posing as government employees to prey on stimulus payment recipients. These scammers may ask for your personal information or threaten you that if you don’t send the money back in the form of money transfers or gift cards, you’ll lose your drivers’ license. Ignore these communications.

Why Did I Receive A Debit Card
The IRS issued millions of debit cards to taxpayers in lieu of second stimulus checks, but will be sending out fewer debit cards out for the third payment. The prepaid Visa debit cards, issued by MetaBank, are called Economic Impact Payment cards. Your EIP card will arrive in a white envelope with “Economic Impact Payment Card” in the return address. You’ll need to activate the card by calling the phone number that comes with the card and choosing a 4-digit PIN number.
You can use your EIP card for purchases or use it to withdraw cash . You can also transfer the funds from your EIP card directly into your own bank account, after you register for online access.
If you use the card wisely, it will be free, but there are some fees to be aware of. If you use an out-of-network ATM or a bank teller to withdraw cash, you may need to pay a fee, and if you check the balance of the debit card, at either an in-network ATM or an out-of-network ATM, you will be charged a small fee.
The IRS has announced that the vast majority of taxpayers should receive their third stimulus payment by direct deposit this time.
Can I Track My Payment
The IRS reopened its “Get My Payment” website following the passage of the American Rescue Plan, allowing people to track when they might receive their stimulus checks. The IRS created this portal last year for the $1,200 stimulus checks directed by the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security, or CARES, Act.
When people check the “Get My Payment” site for the new $1,400 checks, they typically see one of several messages.
First, some people will see that their payment has been processed, along with a payment date and whether the payment will be sent via direct deposit or mail. If a check is sent by mail, the IRS will either send a paper check or a pre-paid debit card.
Others may see a message that they are eligible, but their payment hasn’t been processed and therefore there’s no payment date available.

Are There Other Conditions That Could Reduce The Amount Of My Refund And Change The Amount I Want Deposited To Each Account
If you owe delinquent state income taxes, back child support, or delinquent non-tax federal debts such as student loans, etc., the Department of Treasurys Financial Management Service, which disburses IRS refunds, may offset your refund for the delinquent amount.
FMS will deduct the past-due amounts from the payment that appears first on the payment file received from IRS . If the debt exceeds the payment designated for the account that appears first on the payment file, FMS will reduce the payment designated for the account that appears next, etc.
You will receive a letter from FMS explaining any offset amount, the agency receiving the payment, the address and telephone number of the agency, and amount of your refund/direct deposit offset. If you dispute the debt, you should contact the agency shown on the notice, not IRS, since IRS has no information about the validity of the debt.
Information about refund offsets is available through Wheres My Refund?

Nonfilers: If You Dont Typically File Taxes Heres What To Know And Do
The IRS automatically sent the $600 second stimulus checks to recipients, which is a double-sided coin. On the one hand, you werent required to do anything to receive it, but on the other, there was no way to correct an error.
For tax nonfilers, people who dont normally file a tax return with the IRS, our best suggestion is to take your best guess in the calculator where it asks for your adjusted gross income, taking into account the yearly total of your income. This goes for older adults, Social Security and SSDI and SSI recipients, certain veterans and railroad retirees.
Many nonfilers will receive the full $600 per person, but the calculation could be a little more complex with the AGI of a spouse or child dependents in your household. If theres an error or you dont get your stimulus check, you will need to file a tax return in 2021 in order to claim your share of the stimulus money in a Recovery Rebate Credit.

What Was The First Stimulus Check
IRS gives the first stimulus check to over 30 million Americans worth $600 each. And per household limit is $1200. These checks are only available to American citizens living in America that file taxes. If they have not claimed any income tax returns yet. Where can you get the stimulus? Any American who files a 1040 EZ or 1040-A tax return will automatically be eligible for a stimulus check. Those who already file and claim their stimulus wont receive anything until they file again. Because someone else can already claim it. And if youre late in filing your taxes, you sadly cant qualify for a stimulus.
Who Would Be Eligible For A Rebate
As with the pandemic stimulus checks, compensation depends on income levels: Individuals earning less than $75,000 will get the full $100. The amount would diminish the more you earn, and individuals making over $80,000 wouldn’t be eligible for any rebate.
Joint filers earning less than $150,000 would receive the full $100, phased out at $160,000.

Indiana: $125 Rebate Payments
Like Georgia, Indiana found itself with a healthy budget surplus at the end of 2021. In Dec. 2021, Gov. Eric Holcomb announced that Indiana taxpayers will get a $125 one-time tax refund after they file their 2021 taxes.
Theres no income requirement. Residents must have filed a state tax return for the year 2020 by Jan. 3, 2022, as well as a 2021 Indiana tax return by April 18, 2022, to be eligible. Payments started in May and are expected to continue through mid-summer, according to a state information page.
Taxpayers who file jointly will receive a single deposit of $250.
Most taxpayers will receive their additional refund by direct deposit. If you changed banks or dont have direct deposit information on file, youll receive a paper check in late summer.
For more information, visit the state Department of Revenue website. More information will be added for taxpayers who dont receive their payment by Sept. 1.
What Were The Second And Third Stimulus Checks
Congress extends another one-time stimulus payment to Social Security recipients and Supplemental Security Income beneficiaries. But what about everybody else? In May, lawmakers approve a second stimulus check for eligible taxpayers, worth $1000-$1200 depending on income level. More than 70 million people apply for a portion of that money$9 billion in total. So this makes it impossible for many recipients to pay promptly. Congress is also debating whether or not to approve another irs 4th stimulus check. If it passes, it will go out sometime in 2022. Essentially anybody who receives Social Security or SSI benefits can receive the next stimulus check. Around 57 million people are eligible, according to estimates from officials with the SSA and SSI program.

Closed Bank Account Stimulus Check Deposits
The IRS has confirmed that if it attempts to use direct deposit but an account is closed, the bank will reject the deposit, and the IRS will mail you a paper check with the address it has on file for you. However, paper checks may take weeks longer to arrive than direct deposits. Regardless of how the IRS sends your stimulus payment, it will also send a letter to the mailing address it has on file for you to let you know how the payment was made and how to report any failure to receive the payment, according to its website.
While there was some flexibility to update bank accounts for the first stimulus payment, the second stimulus payment has to be paid out by mid-January 2021 so existing bank account information is being used. If you dont get your stimulus check by direct deposit, check or debit card by February the IRS is recommending you claim the stimulus payment via your 2020 tax return.
