Recovery Rebate Credit: What It Is And How To Claim It

Where’s my stimulus? | How to check the status of your stimulus payment

The third stimulus payment was technically an advance on the 2021 tax credit. And because the IRS did not yet have access to your 2021 tax information when the advance payments were sent out, they relied on the most recent information they had on file for you to determine how much to send.

When you receive Letter 6475, compare the amount you received against how much you were eligible for based on your 2021 tax information. If you think you received less than you were entitled to, you might be able to recover those funds by claiming the balance via the recovery rebate credit on your 2021 tax return. This could happen if, for example, you welcomed a newborn in 2021 or will be claiming a new qualifying dependent on your 2021 taxes.

On their website, the IRS states that most people who were eligible for the third round of payments have already received the funds. But if for some reason you were eligible for the payment but never received it, you also might be able to recover that money via the recovery rebate credit.

As a part of the Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act recently signed into law, the IRS announced that they have begun issuing a second round of stimulus payments to eligible tax filers.

Here are answers to some of the top questions you may have about the second stimulus checks:

If you have an adjusted gross income of up to $75,000 , you could be eligible for the full amount of the recovery rebate $600 for eligible individuals, $1,200 for joint taxpayers, and an additional $600 for each dependent child under 17.

*Note, adjusted gross income is your gross income like wages, salaries, or interest minus adjustments for eligible deductions like student loan interest or your IRA deduction. Your AGI can be found on line 8b of your 2019 Form 1040.

The same eligibility rules apply to the second stimulus payment as the first one. You must have a valid Social Security number, and you cant have been claimed as a dependent on someone elses 2019 tax return.

Will You Get A Paper Check Or A Debit Card

If you are eligible for the second round of stimulus payments and you did not get a direct deposit by early January, chances are your payment was supposed to arrive by either a paper check or a debit card. If you got a paper check for your first stimulus payment last year, you might still get a debit card this time. And some people who got a debit card last time may receive a check now.

IRS and Treasury urge eligible people who dont receive a direct deposit to watch their mail carefully during this period for a check or an Economic Impact Payment card, which is sponsored by the Treasury Departments Bureau of the Fiscal Service and is issued by Treasurys financial agent, MetaBank®, N.A, the IRS explained. The Economic Impact Payment Card will be sent in a white envelope that prominently displays the U.S. Department of the Treasury seal. It has the Visa name on the front of the Card and the issuing bank, MetaBank®, N.A. on the back of the card. Information included with the card will explain that this is your Economic Impact Payment.

More information about the debit cards is available at EIPcard.com.

What Could Delay My Tax Refund

Heres a list of reasons your income tax refund might be delayed:

  • Your tax return has errors.
  • Its incomplete.
  • Your refund is suspected of identity theft or fraud.
  • You filed for the earned income tax credit or additional child tax credit.
  • Your return needs further review.
  • Your return includes Form 8379 , injured spouse allocation which could take up to 14 weeks to process.

If the delay is due to a necessary tax correction made to a recovery rebate credit, earned income tax or additional child tax credit claimed on your return, the IRS will send you an explanation. If theres a problem that needs to be fixed, the IRS will first try to proceed without contacting you. However, if it needs any more information, it will write you a letter.

What About People With Itins

You still need a work-authorizing Social Security Number to be eligible for this stimulus. However, there are important changes since the first round of stimulus checks.

  • In the first stimulus rollout, any non-SSN holder on a joint return made everyone on that return ineligible. Big change: The new rounds of stimulus has corrected this problem. If you filed a joint return with a non-SSN holder, you are still eligible for the stimulus. See the below hypotheticals.
  • Situation: A single tax filer has an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number but no Social Security number .
  • This person is ineligible for the stimulus.
  • Situation: A spouse has a Social Security number and files married filing jointly on a tax return with a spouse who has an ITIN.
  • The SSN holder is now eligible to get a payment. If they have children on the tax return that have SSNs, these children will be eligible for the payment for each qualifying child.
  • Situation: Two ITIN holders file a joint return and claim young children who have SSNs.
  • The children who have SSNs are eligible for the payment.

If you did not get all or some portion of your Economic Impact Payments you can file a 2020 tax return and claim these amounts on line 30 of the form. The IRS is referring to this as the recovery rebate and will allow you to claim any of the EIPs that you did not get in advance. Stimulus Check Schedule: When You Should Get Yours

The IRS started mailing out stimulus checks the week of April 13, sending paper payments to more than 5 million eligible taxpayers. It completed the payments of millions more who had set up direct deposit.

Paper stimulus checks will continue to be sent out every week, at the rate of about 5 million per week. The “schedule” depends on your income, meaning how much you make according to your recent tax return will control when your check is sent.

The IRS is sending out the $1,200 paper checks for those with the lowest incomes first, and predicts it will take up to 20 weeks to fulfill all the payments.

While individuals who earn more than $99,000 or childless couples earning $198,000 wont receive any payment, there are many who earn somewhere in between. As long as they’ve filed their taxes, they will receive prorated amounts.

What does that mean? Well, you’ll receive incrementally less than $1,200 as your annual earnings approach $99,000. Check out our guide on using the stimulus check calculator to figure out how much relief you’ll get.

Can You Use The Portal If You Didn’t File A Tax Return

You couldn’t use the “Get My Payment” tool to track the status of your first stimulus check if you didn’t file a 2018 or 2019 federal income tax return. However, there was another online tool that non-filers could use to give the IRS with the information it needed to process a payment.

The non-filers tool wasn’t used for second stimulus checks, though. Instead, if you didn’t file a 2019 tax return, and you didn’t use the non-filers tool to get your first-round payment, then you have to wait to claim your second stimulus check money as a Recovery Rebate credit on your 2020 return.

The IRS is not using the non-filers tool for third-round stimulus checks, either. As a result, if you don’t file a 2019 or 2020 tax return, you’ll have to claim any money you’re owed as a Recovery Rebate credit on your 2021 return, which you won’t file until next year. However, you can avoid having to wait until next year by filing a 2020 return before the May 17, 2021, deadline.

How Much Money Will I Get

At least 2 stimulus check qualifications

Right now, stimulus checks for qualifying individuals are $600. Qualifying couples will receive $1,200 and qualifying dependents get $600.

The size of your stimulus check is based on your adjusted gross income , which is your total income minus adjustments like standard or itemized deductions. Adults with AGIs up to $75,000 per year and couples earning up to $150,000 per year will receive $600 per person. The income cap for heads of households to get the full $600 is $112,500.

Your payment decreases by $5 per $100 you make above the threshold. If youre an individual who makes more than $87,000, you wont get a payment. If youre a couple with an adjusted gross income of $174,000 or more, or a head of household making more than $124,500, you wont get any money.

And yes: Depending on your income, you could receive a stimulus check for as little as $5.

Monthly $2000 Stimulus Check: Is It Possible

Forbes reports that a bill that proposes monthly payments of $2,000 to eligible taxpayers is “gaining steam” with some congressional supporters. The House bill was put forth by Rep. Time Ryan and Rep. Ro Khanna .

Senator Kamala Harris and entrepreneur Andrew Yang, who were both 2020 presidential candidates, have thrown their support behind a $2,000 a month stimulus check package, with the idea that such checks would be avoidable to anyone earning up to $120,000 per annum.

Harris introduced the Monthly Economic Crisis Support Act, alongside Senator Bernie Sanders and Senator Ed Markey. Under that scheme, the monthly checks would not only apply for individuals, but also married couples would be able to get $4,000 per month and a further $2,000 per dependent would be made available, up to a maximum of three dependents. And the payments would be available to all US residents, regardless of whether they have a Social Security number or file taxes.

The government should be here for the people in a moment of crisis, said Harris. People should be able to count on their government to see them and to create a safety net for them, so that these people dont fall into povertyor further into povertyduring the course of this pandemic.

And it would appear that getting the HEROES Act through the Senate would the first hurdle to jump before other stimulus check plans can be properly proposed, let alone brought into effect.

Stimulus Check Round : Is A Second Round Coming

A second stimulus package was officially presented on the Senate floor in late July as the HEALS Act, but the timing of when it might arrive is still in limbo.

In addition to $1,200 direct payments, the HEALS Act continues federal unemployment benefits , offers a Paycheck Protection Program sequel for business loans, and provides more funding to help schools and COVID-19 testing, treatment and vaccine research.

The $2 trillion CARES Act relief package aimed to assist those facing financial hardships during the coronavirus pandemic, and the IRS devised a system for sending out stimulus check payments to millions of eligible Americans.

But almost three months later, not everyone who qualifies has received their check. The checks take quite some time to send via mail, and with the tax returns deadline pushed back the IRS is still processing paperwork.

Some people may have even thrown out their debit card stimulus payment without knowing. Theres also the issue of stimulus checks being sent to the deceased.

Perhaps youve heard the payment be called a recovery rebate, rather than a stimulus check. Thats because its actually a tax credit that will appear on the tax return youll file for the 2020-2021 tax year.

While tax returns are usually granted after you file your taxes, the government has brought forward the credit to curb the impact the pandemic has inflicted on American businesses and incomes. These stimulus checks of up to $1,200 may help those who have lost their job or are struggling with finances right now.
