‘a Little Bit Of Credit’
Monroe County has strong historical ties both to labor unions and the Democratic Party. Voters here supported Democratic presidential candidates in all but two elections from 1960 to 2008, when Barack Obama carried the county with 53 percent of the vote.
But like many rural counties in recent years, the area has surged right.
In the Trump era, amid a steady decline in union jobs and a booming natural gas industry, that trend accelerated. Trump received 76 percent of the vote here last year.
During the campaign, Biden argued that his populist policies would appeal to the White working-class voters whove fled the party.
But in Monroe County, the wounds of the 2020 election remain visible, as Trump flags and Do you miss me yet banners featuring the former presidents face continue to line highways.
Manchin, who is married to Sen. Joe Manchin III , said the Biden administrations efforts to boost the Appalachian region will pay off with residents in the long term. She noted that Bidens proposed budget includes a record $235 million for economic and community programs implemented by the Appalachian Regional Commission. Bidens proposed American Jobs Plan to fund infrastructure repairs also includes $1 billion to help distressed coal communities, she noted.
Using data from L2, a national voter file vendor, The Post estimates that nearly 6.5 million out of the 7.5 million Trump voters in the Appalachia region were eligible to receive a stimulus check.
What Will The Portal Tell You
The “Get My Payment” tool will tell you:
- Payment date
- Payment method Note: mail means you may be issued an EIP Card or a check
If your payment status is not available, that means the IRS has not yet processed your payment, or you are not eligible for a payment.
If you get a message that says “Need More Information,” that means your payment was returned to the IRS because the post office was unable to deliver it. The IRS said people who got this message will eventually be able to use the tool to provide additional bank account information.
Stimulus Checks For Gas Here’s What Could Be Coming Your Way
Americans already faced searing inflation when gas prices surged to an all-time high earlier this month. Now, some lawmakers want the federal government to offer stimulus payments or rebate checks to help reduce the pain at the pump.
Families with two children could get as much $300 per month as long as the nation’s average gas price exceeds $4 a gallon, according to one new bill proposed by Reps. Mike Thompson of California, John Larson of Connecticut and Lauren Underwood of Illinois. All three lawmakers are Democrats.
And on Wednesday, California Governor Gavin Newsom said he’s proposing to send direct payments of $400 per vehicle to state residents, with a cap of two vehicles. Pending approval from California lawmakers, the checks could arrive as soon as July, the statement said. Drivers in California face some of the highest gas prices in the nation, with the state average at $5.87 per gallon on Wednesday, according to AAA.
American consumers could see increased costs of $2,000 this year due to the recent surge in gas prices and that’s on top of an extra $1,000 in grocery store costs due to the steepest rise in inflation since 1982. Already, consumers are reporting they are cutting back on spending or driving less, with most blaming sticker shock at the pump.
Currently, millions of Americans would qualify for the payments based on current gas prices, which averaged $4.24 a gallon on March 22, according to AAA.

Mnuchin said the goal is to direct deposit as many payments as possible and avoid mailing checks.
Some Americans reported seeing direct deposits in their bank accounts this past Saturday, and others started seeing deposits Monday. By Wednesday, 80 million people should receive a direct deposit in their bank account, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin has said.
But when the rest of Americans will receive their money will vary. The first group includes people who have already given their bank account information to the IRS for the direct deposit of tax refunds on 2018 or 2019 tax returns, USA Today reported. Additionally, Social Security beneficiaries who filed federal tax returns that included direct deposit information would be part of that first group.
The second wave of money could hit bank accounts the week of April 20 for a group of people who receive Social Security benefits via direct deposit but may not make enough money to be required to file a federal income tax return in 2018 or 2019.
For those receiving paper checks, the first round is expected to go out in late April or possibly the first week in May. The first checks are supposed to go out to families who have the lowest incomes possibly those who make less than $10,000 a year, according to USA Today.

Ohio Attorney General Says Covid
Sometimes, state law gives greater protection than federal law’
CLEVELAND, Ohio – Coronavirus stimulus checks are protected under existing Ohio law from bill collectors and exempt from state and federal attachment, garnishment or execution.
Ohio Attorney General David Yost announced this Monday in a press release.
The stimulus checks were intended to be used during an emergency to put food on the table, keep the lights on, and a roof over our heads, Yost said in a released statement. It wasnt meant to pay off an old bill.
Yost said he is sending notices to relevant entities as well as posting the notice on his website. He pointed out that Ohio Revised Code 2329.66 applies to payments under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act:
- A payment in compensation for loss of future earnings of the person or an individual of whom the person is or was a dependent, to the extent reasonably necessary for the support of the debtor and any of the debtor’s dependents.
CARES Act does not allow for stimulus checks to be garnished for debts owed to federal or state governments, however, there is no current federal provision banning private debt collectors from doing the same, which is why Yost said he issued the notice about state law.

‘we Are Just Trying To Burn Money’
The stimulus boosted Americans household wealth to a record $136.9 trillion in the spring, according to the Federal Reserve. And Biden argues that the most recent jobs report the U.S. economy added 850,000 jobs in June is a sign that his strategy of growing the economy from the bottom up is working.
But local business owners are divided over whether the payments have helped the local economy.
At Monroe Carpet and Flooring in Woodsfield, co-owner Robin Langsdorf said there has been an uptick in business, though it has yet to return to pre-pandemic levels.
These women are coming in and getting their kitchens done or new carpets, and I know that is probably from their stimulus, said Langsdorf, 61, who used her most recent check to buy some household items.
But Unlimited Autos, which sells used cars, hasnt seen the same bump, according to manager Carl Harper.
Harper said sales plummeted by more than 70 percent at the height of the pandemic and still havent fully rebounded. Instead of buying cars, many Monroe residents used their stimulus to purchase all-terrain vehicles, he said.
A lot of them just blew it on foolishness, Harper said. A lot of people on welfare just took the stimulus and blew it on motorbikes.
Monroe County Commissioner Mick Schumacher, a Republican, is also skeptical that the federal stimulus will have a lasting impact.
Wheres My Stimulus Check
There is, however, at least one benefit related to this thats already guaranteed for 2022.
If you add up all six child tax credit check amounts you got this year, youll also receive a tax credit for that same amount next year when you file your federal taxes. That will represent the second half of your child tax credit. And, for now, that will be the end of the enhanced credit.
Theres always a chance the Senate could revisit the legislation supporting an extension of these checks early in the new year. The body might pass it as-is, or change the language of that provision. Or take it out altogether.

It provides updates on whether the IRS is processing your check or has already scheduled your payment whether your payment will be made by a paper check, prepaid debit card or through direct deposit to your bank account and whether there are problems holding up your payment.
To use this portal, you must input your Social Security number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number along with your date of birth, street address and postal code. The IRS updates its status tracking information daily. You should get a letter about 15 days after the IRS issues your payment telling you how much you received and how you received it.
After using the IRS tracker, you may sign up for a free service from the post office that tells you exactly when your stimulus check will arrive in the mail.
Eligibility For The Covid

Every individual making $75,000 or less will receive a check for $1,200. Couples making less than $150,000 and that file taxes jointly should each receive $1,200 for a total of $2,400, with an additional $500 for each child. Those making between $75,000 and $99,000 a year should receive reduced checks on a sliding scale. Those making more than $99,000 individually or $198,000 jointly are ineligible.
Eligibility is being determined by 2019 and 2018 tax returns, but for those that are not required to file taxes, the IRS has set up a separate tool. Follow the link in these instructions for non-filers. The government will verify your income for those years and, if you qualify and have a bank account registered for tax refunds, you should receive a direct deposit. How To Get Your Refund Faster
The speedy returns are good news, considering the IRS has warned that a backlog of returns from last year and a staffing shortage may lead to delays processing returns this year. In general, the agency aims to send refunds within 21 days.
The simpler your return, the faster the IRS should theoretically be able to process it. The more credits you claim, the longer it might take to receive a refund. Those who claim the earned income tax credit, for example, can expect theirs no earlier than Feb. 15, and likely later than that.
Additionally, the IRS is anticipating that some taxpayers will make mistakes when claiming missing stimulus and the other half of their child tax credit. When mistakes are made, agents have to manually review returns, which takes more time.
Other reasons your refund might be delayed include mailing a paper return or not being set up for direct deposit. Of course, having more complicated taxes can’t be helped.
The best way to ensure you get your refund faster is to file as early as you can online and request direct deposit. And make sure that all of the information you include is correct and complete. The IRS processes returns on a first-come, first-served basis.
