What Does The Stimulus Check Portal Do

The updated “Get My Payment” tool lets you:

  • Check the status of your stimulus payment
  • Confirm your payment type and
  • Get a projected direct deposit or paper check delivery date .

For first-round stimulus payments, you could also use the portal to enter or change your bank account information to have your payment directly deposited into your account. However, that feature isn’t included in the current tool . The IRS already has bank account information for millions of Americans from recent tax returns, tax payments, the original “Get My Payment” tool, the non-filers tool used last year, other federal agencies that regularly send out benefit payments , and federal records of recent payments to or from the government. So, the tax agency is generally limiting direct deposit payments to bank accounts that they already have on file. As a result, you can’t change your bank information using the “Get My Payment” tool.

If your payment isn’t deposited directly into your bank account, then you’ll get either a paper check or a debit card in the mail . You could also receive a payment by mail if your bank rejected a direct deposit. This could happen because the bank information was incorrect or the bank account on file with the IRS has since been closed.

The IRS has now launched a Get My Payment online tracker, so you can monitor the status of your second stimulus payment or check. Its a first step in tracking down your money, and fixing any problems holding it up.

The IRS confirmed early in the month that there are some snags with the second round of COVID-19 stimulus payments. Direct deposits are bouncing back from some temporary bank accounts set up for customers who used tax prep services like H& R Block and TurboTax for last years return. Those stimulus payments were sent to temporary pass-through accounts, which customers can no longer access.

In the Get My Payment tool, you might even see your second stimulus check deposited into an account you dont recognize. The IRS said in a statement that any financial institutions that wrongly received the stimulus checks, will return them to the IRS. The IRS will then reissue the payments to the correct accounts.

Also, keep an eye on your mailbox. You may get a check or even a debit card, instead. It will come in a marked envelope, with the U.S. Treasury Department seal, and may take up to four weeks to be delivered. Instructions on securely activating the card will be included.

The government is gearing up to send millions of Americans another round of economic stimulus payments. But this one wont be exactly like the one from earlier this year. Here are five things to know about the new program:

It’s scaled back: The payments will be smaller this time around, as lawmakers try to keep down the cost of their latest coronavirus stimulus package . They max out at $600 for individuals earning less than $75,000, or $150,000 for those filing jointly. Thats half as much as the previous round of checks, though children will get a bump up to $600, from the previous $500. Lawmakers are keeping a rule from earlier this year that only dependents under the age of 17 are eligible .

The IRS will determine most peoples income eligibility by looking at the tax returns they filed earlier this year. The agency also has a lot of information now about people who dont have to file returns, after having to track them down as part of the previous payment program. For people whose circumstances have changed since they did their taxes maybe they had a baby they will have to clear that up when they do their taxes next year.

What If Dont Normally File A Tax Return

The IRS said this third round of stimulus will be based on tax year 2019 or 2020 information, or information obtained by the Social Security Administration and Veterans Affairs Administration. If you are a non-filer who also does not receive a SSA or VA benefit, then use the Non-filer Sign-up tool, described below.

The IRS recently launched a new Non-filer Sign-up tool on its website. Although this non-filer portal is labeled as for non-filers claiming advance payments of the child tax credit, it is also available for others, including single individuals and people experiencing homelessness. It will allow individuals to provide their information to the IRS so that they can receive any of the three Economic Impact Payments , also known as stimulus payments, that they may be missing. If an individual did not get the full amounts of the EIPs, they may use this tool if they:

  • Are not required to file a 2020 tax return, didnt file a 2020 tax return, and dont plan to, and
  • Want to claim the 2020 Recovery Rebate Credit and get their third EIP.

The new Non-filer Sign-up tool is for people who did not file a tax return for 2019 or 2020, and who did not use the IRS Non-filers tool last year to register for Economic Impact Payments.
