Where Do The Stimulus Checks Come From

Must read

I Havent Filed My 2019 Tax Return Yet What Should I Do

Where does the money for stimulus checks come from?

As long as you filed a 2018 tax return, you should be fine. The IRS says that it will use your 2018 tax filings to make its calculations on your Economic Impact Payment. If you filed a 2019 tax return, the IRS will use that information instead.

If you havent filed a 2018 or 2019 tax return and were not exempt from doing so file those returns electronically as soon as you can. For most Americans, filing a return from those tax years is the only way you can receive a stimulus payment.

If you filed your 2018 tax returns with a mailing address or direct deposit information thats no longer accurate, the only way to update that information is by filing your 2019 tax returns electronically with the updated information. If the IRS already has incorrect information about you, you cant use the Get My Payment app to update it.

The IRS has extended the deadline for filing 2019 taxes to July 15, 2020.

When Is The Irs Sending Out Refunds

A number of factors will determine when a tax refund will be received by a taxpayer, those being:

  • How early the taxes are filed
  • If the taxpayer is claiming credits
  • Whether the return is mailed or e-filed
  • Whether the taxpayer has existing federal debts
  • The COVID stimulus checks sent out in 2020 and 2021 will not have any affect on income tax refunds, although some taxpayers may be determined to have been owed one, which could lead to higher refunds

If an income tax return has Earned Income Tax Credit or Child Tax Credit, the processing will be delayed by two to three weeks

Tax returns that are filed electronically by January 24 will be sent by January 31. Those to arrive by January 31 will then be sent on February 11. The following list shows the filed-by date on the left, followed by the date by which the tax refund will be sent.

How Can I Check My Stimulus Check Status

The IRS has created a website where you can check the status of your stimulus payment.

The Get My Payment tool is no longer updating for either the first or second stimulus check. However, you can use it to see the status of your third check.

  • If your payment has been processed. the IRS will specify its status including whether it has been sent, the date issued, and whether the money will be directly deposited or mailed.
  • If your status reads “Payment Not Available.” The IRS either hasn’t yet processed your payment or you aren’t eligible for one.
  • If it reads “Need More Information.” Your check was returned to the IRS after an attempted delivery. Give the IRS your bank information to receive your money.

If you did not get your first or second check, you’ll need to file a 2020 tax return to get the payment.

Whats Different About This Third Stimulus Payment Compared To The Previous Two

Payments to those earning more than the defined threshold amounts are phased out at a more aggressive rate, resulting in a lower eligibility cutoff. As a result, many Americans who qualified for the first and second stimulus checks wont be eligible for this round.

However, payments for qualifying dependents in the third stimulus will match the payment amounts sent to qualifying taxpayers themselves. For many people, this will mean a larger supplemental payment than in previous stimulus distributions. And, unlike the first and second stimulus programs, the third stimulus doesnt exclude dependents over 18 years of age. This means that millions of college students, elderly and disabled dependents of eligible tax filers will qualify for the supplemental payments.

Third Stimulus Check: Heres What Could Delay Or Lower Your Payment

The third stimulus check is already hitting some bank accounts, just days after President Joe Biden signed the American Rescue Act into law. But while some households will see the funds as early as this week, others may be in for a longer wait.

About 85% of people will receive one of the $1,400 checks, Mr. Biden said on March 12. Its also likely that some of the issues that stymied delivery for some people in the previous two rounds of stimulus could cause a repeat situation the third time. For instance, some people who didnt have a bank account on file with the IRS during the previous two rounds of checks had to wait several weeks for debit cards or paper checks to reach their homes.

Its most likely that people who have filed their 2020 or 2019 tax returns and have a bank account on file with the tax agency will quickly receive their stimulus checks through direct deposit, based on the prior payment rollouts. Thats because the IRS prioritizes getting the stimulus money out quickly to those it knows it can reach and its a massive effort, given that the tax agency has $422 billion in funds to distribute to more than 100 million taxpayers.

About 100 million payments will be issued over the next 10 days, according to IRS and Treasury officials on a Monday conference call.

Heres what could hold up some people from receiving their money, or receiving the incorrect amount.

The fifth batch of payments began processing on Friday, April 9, with an official payment date of April 14. The fifth batch included:

Two Kinds Of Stimulus

There are two different types of stimulus: Fiscal stimulus is described as acts the government takes to prod the economy:

  • Additional government consumption
  • Increased government transfers
  • Reduced taxes

These measures are designed to reduce public debt. The other type, known as monetary stimulus refers to:

  • Reduced interest rates
  • Quantitative easing
  • Alternative means of making credit available

These measures can be used to stave off or mitigate a recession an excellent example of how monetary stimulus was used in this way was the federal governments quantitative easing strategy to deal with the mortgage crisis of 2008.

Farmworkers and meatpackers are entitled to up to $600 per person for pandemic health and safety-related costs, including personal protective equipment, child care and expenses related to testing or quarantining, the USDA says.

Approximately $20 million of the $700 million pool of money will be set aside for grocery store employees. However, the amount individuals in that industry will receive is not yet known.

“Our farmworkers, meatpacking workers and grocery workers overcame unprecedented challenges and took on significant personal risk to ensure Americans could feed and sustain their families throughout the pandemic, says Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, in a news release.

“They deserve recognition for their resilience and financial support for their efforts to meet personal and family needs while continuing to provide essential services,” Vilsack says.

When it comes time to apply in 2022, workers must show proof of employment and provide self-certification of their pandemic-related expenses. Itemized receipts wont be necessary, according to Agriculture Department guidance.
