Second Stimulus Checks: What Youll Get And When
President Trump signed the $900 billion economic relief and government funding bill into law, which includes a second stimulus check that tops out at $600 per person. The bill comes at a crucial time after expanded unemployment benefits lapsed on December 26 for roughly 12 million Americans. More help could be on the way as Congress is expected to vote on a stimulus payment increase. Lets break down what this means for your stimulus check who qualifies, how much you could get and when the checks are expected to go out.
This is a developing story. We will continue to update this article as soon as more information becomes available.
Second Stimulus Checks: What You Need to Know
President Trump signed the new COVID-19 relief package into law on December 27, and the bill includes a second round of stimulus checks that pay up to $600. According to the text released by Congressional leaders, the bill notes those with an adjusted gross income over certain limits will receive a reduced amount of money, with the checks phasing out entirely at higher incomes. Heres a quick breakdown:
-
Single filer checks begin to phase out at AGIs above $75,000.
-
Head of household checks start getting phased out at incomes over $112,500.
The second stimulus checks are half the maximum amount of the first stimulus checks included in the CARES Act in March.
Who Qualifies for the Second Stimulus Check?
The tables below break down payments by AGI level and tax filing status:
Bottom Line
You Havent Received Your Second Stimulus Payment Yet
Many people will receive stimulus payments by direct deposit, according to the IRS. If you paid 2019 federal taxes via direct debit or received a tax refund by direct deposit, you will likely receive your second stimulus payment the same way. The majority of these payments have already been issued. If the IRS does not have your correct, up-to-date banking information, youll receive payment by mail or debit card .
Social Security or other beneficiaries who use Direct Express cards and received the first round of stimulus on that card can expect the same this time. Otherwise, payment will come by mail.
Generally, you can expect to receive your payment in the same form you received the first stimulus payment under the CARES Act in early 2020. But thats not the case for everyone. If the IRS is unable to make a direct deposit, your payment may be sent by mail. And if your first stimulus payment arrived via paper check, you could receive a debit card this time, and vice versa.
The best way to track how and when youll receive your stimulus payment is with the IRS Get My Payment tool. This tool can tell you when your payment was sent and whether itll arrive via direct deposit or mail.
And while Jan. 15 is the IRS deadline, you may not actually receive payment by that date. After your payment reports as mailed on the Get My Payment tracker, it may take up to three or four weeks to receive the check or debit card, the agency says.

Will I Get A Stimulus Check If I Got The First One
If you received the first stimulus check, youll likely receive a second one. However, certain situations may change that.
If your AGI is higher than $87,000 if youre a single filer or $174,000 for married filing jointly, you wont get a second stimulus check. But because these limits for the first stimulus check were higher $99,000 and $198,000, respectively you may have gotten a first stimulus check.
For example, if your AGI was $90,000 in 2019, you would have received the first stimulus check, but you wont receive a second.
Another situation is if youre in the delayed payment situation mentioned above. If you are in a situation where you must claim the check on your 2020 taxes instead, you will not receive a second check. Instead, youll get the money by having your tax refund increased or the amount you owe on taxes reduced by $600 or $1,200 depending on your filing status and how much you were supposed to receive from the second stimulus.
Are There New Income Limits To Get A Check

Congress is still negotiating the bill, with the Senate set to take up Mr. Biden’s $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief bill as early as Wednesday. Since the bill is not expected to attract many, or even any, Republican votes, all Democrats will need to support the bill in order for it to pass, giving moderate Democrats like Manchin leverage to make demands of the president and Senate leadership.
That explains why Mr. Biden would be willing to lower the income phaseout. But because the Senate version of the bill is likely to differ from the House version, which was passed last week, the legislation will have to go back to the House for another vote.

Checks Could Go Out In A Matter Of Days After The American Rescue Plan Is Signed Into Law
If all goes as planned, millions of Americans will soon be getting another stimulus payment. This time, its up to $1,400 for individuals, $2,800 for couples, and an additional $1,400 for dependents.
The payments under the American Rescue Plan, which was adopted by the Senate on Saturday, are the third and so far the largest of the payments sent to Americans under coronavirus relief packages over the last year.
The payments will be distributed by the IRS. By now, the agency has experience in delivering the money quickly to eligible individuals and families.
But, no doubt, there will be some glitches, which is to be expected given the number of payments that could be sent in a matter of days.
The IRS has said it will issue information and details on the distribution of thisthird payment once the bill is passed by Congress and signed into law by President Biden. The House is expected to vote on the measure Tuesday or Wednesday, and Biden has said he will move swiftly to distribute the relief.
