Why Did The Irs Send Me A Supplemental Stimulus Check

When will stimulus checks be deposited? Can checks be garnished? We asked the experts

The IRS began sending additional payments to people whose business incentive checks were based on their 2019 tax returns, but whose 2020 tax returns showed they were eligible for a higher payment. Payments were also made to people about whom the IRS previously had no information, but who filed their tax returns in 2020.

Irs Has Sent $6 Billion In Stimulus Payments Just In June Here’s How To Track Your Money

Your stimulus check could be on its way, along with child tax credit money and unemployment tax refunds. We’ll explain the state of the payments today.

Stimulus check payments aren’t over yet for everyone.

Don’t think that the child tax credit payments going out in just over two weeks are all the IRS is focused on. The tax agency continues to send weekly batches of the third stimulus checks, with more than $6 billion in stimulus payments going out just in June. Some of that money includes “plus-up” adjustments for people who received less money than they were supposed to get in earlier checks.

Even though many of us got our stimulus money in the earlier batches in spring, some have had to wait weeks or months for their checks. The IRS sent money first to people who’d already filed their 2019 or 2020 tax returns because those were the easiest to verify. So if you’re still waiting for your stimulus check up to $1,400 — or think you might be due a plus-up payment — we’ll tell you what to do next.

In the meantime, many experts say a fourth stimulus check is unlikely, but millions of families will be getting a good chunk of money with July’s first child tax credit payment. We can tell you how to know if you qualify and how much money you could expect over the course of the year. The IRS is also issuing unemployment tax refunds to millions of people who received jobless benefits last year, though payments are taking longer than expected. This story was updated recently.

Eligibility For $1400 Stimulus Checks

Here is a breakdown of those who are eligible for the $1,400 stimulus check:

  • Heads of household with an AGI up to $112,500

  • Smaller payments will be made to individuals with an AGI under $80,000, heads of household with an AGI under $120,000, and married couples earning under $160,000.-
  • Anyone above those limits will receive nothing
  • The payments are based on either 2019 or 2020 income, depending on when a taxpayer files their 2020 tax return.

When Will Your Third Stimulus Check Arrive

The push for a third stimulus check started in December before the second round of $600 payments were even authorized. So, we’ve had to wait a couple of months to see how this would all play out. But, on March 11, President Biden signed the American Rescue Plan Act, which authorizes another round of stimulus checks. So, finally, we know that a third round of stimulus payments is comingnow we just need to wait for them to arrive.

Some people have already received an electronic payment. But that’s just the first wave of payments. More stimulus checks will then be sent over the following weeks mostly by direct deposit, but some through the mail as a paper check or debit card.

When second-round stimulus checks were authorized in December, the IRS started issuing electronic payments in less than one week. So, it shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise that the tax agency was able to repeat that feat and start sending payments within days this time around, too.

We don’t know yet how long it will take to distribute all payments. Hopefully, it will be a matter of weeks, not months, before the vast majority of third stimulus checks are delivered. We shall see.

How Much Does The Third Stimulus Check Pay

The $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief plan includes a third round of $1,400 stimulus payments, topping off the $600 checks that were , and adding up to $2,000.

Congress passed the coronavirus relief plan with targeted income limits for maximum stimulus payments to individual taxpayers earning under $75,000 and joint filers making up to $150,000. But whereas the first and second rounds of stimulus payments phased out checks on a sliding scale of $5 for every $100 over the income limit, the new plan cuts off high earners at $80,000 for individuals and $160,000 for couples.

WASHINGTON Americans waiting for the direct deposit of their third stimulus check should take a look in their bank accounts Wednesday. The Treasury Department said another 37 million payments have gone out in its second batch, reaching a total of 127 million so far since the American Rescue Plan was signed.

But this isn’t the final group of deposits, so people need to also be prepared to possibly wait a little longer.

The IRS said Monday that the new batch began processing last Friday and would have an official pay date of Wednesday, March 24. That coincides with what some people may have found when they checked the IRS Get My Payment tool when checking to see when they would receive their money.

The Treasury said the most recent batch included 17 million direct deposits, 15 million paper checks and 5 million prepaid debit cards.

Your Third Stimulus Check Can Be Seized Here’s What To Know

Third Stimulus Checks: When Will You Get a $1,400 Payment?

Bad news: The new stimulus bill doesn’t have the same protections to prevent your third payment from being garnished for a past-due payment as with the second check. We’ll explain what that means for you.

Who can garnish your stimulus check? We’ll tell you.

For millions of people, third stimulus checks have already been delivered. But for others, they may never see all of the money that gets direct-deposited into their bank accounts. Unlike the second stimulus check, the new stimulus bill doesn’t have the same protections against your $1,400 check being seized by debt collectors.

If you’re waiting on your check to arrive, you’re likely wondering many things: Can my third check be garnished to pay overdue child support? Can states, banks, creditors or my landlord take my money to cover an outstanding debt? If I claim missing money from the first or second stimulus checks on my 2020 tax return, can that get taken too? Will my third stimulus check be taxed? What happens if the IRS sends me too much money by accident?

Who Is Eligible For The Third Stimulus Payment

With funding from the United States, President Joe Biden will pay up to $1,400 for individual taxpayers earning less than $80,000 and up to $2,800 for couples earning less than $160,000. Let’s see what this means for you: who qualifies for the third incentive bonus, how it is calculated and how quickly you receive it.

Which Tax Return Is Used For My Third Stimulus Check

The IRS uses 2019 or 2020 tax returns to determine eligibility for your third stimulus check. You should note that if your income fell in the 2020 tax year, filing your tax return earlier could help you qualify for a bigger third stimulus check. The new stimulus plan targets lower income ranges to exclude higher-earning taxpayers from getting a payment.

As we pointed out before, individuals making under $75,000 get the maximum stimulus payment of $1,400 . But payments are capped at $80,000 for single filers and $160,000 for couples. So filing at the beginning of the tax season with a lower income may help you qualify for a bigger check. But, if your income went up in tax year 2020, then you may want to delay filing so that eligibility is determined by your lower 2019 income.

You might also want to file early if the size of your family increased in 2020. The new stimulus plan includes a child tax credit that pays up to $3,600 for each qualifying child under 6 years old, and $3,000 for every child between ages 6 and 17. This means that if you became a parent during the tax year, you could get an additional payment by claiming your child as a dependent earlier.

What Does Need More Information Mean

Others may see a “need more information” message, which the tax agency said means the payment was returned to the IRS because the U.S. Postal Service wasn’t able to deliver the check. In that case, people can use the “Get My Payment” site to provide the IRS with bank information but the tax agency said that only people who get the “need more information” message will be able to add their bank information to the portal.

You Moved Or Changed Your Bank Account

Third Stimulus Check Likely But Could Be March Or Later Before $1,400 Payments Arrive

This could be a worry for people who received a mailed check or pre-paid debit card but recently moved, as well as people who changed their bank accounts.

The IRS said it will open up its Get My Payment tool on IRS.gov this week. The site is meant to inform people about the status of their payment, but wont allow them to update their bank account information, Treasury and IRS officials said March 12. However, the officials added that the agencies have been working on checking whether the bank account information they have is correct for consumers.

The downside: If a check is issued to a closed or incorrect account, the IRS will need to reissue the payment in a check and mail it to your house. That could add to your wait.

But that’s only for the dates the IRS will begin to send checks. It could take weeks for the IRS to process every group’s funds and more time for the transactions to go through, especially if you’re issued a paper check or EIP card. Any additional complication could delay your payment. The schedule below reflects CNET’s best guesses, based on the IRS’ timeline for the 600 dollar stimulus check.

Number Of Third Stimulus Checks

Question: How many third-round stimulus checks will I get?

Answer: As with the first two round of checks, the legislation authorizing the third round of payments only calls for one payment. This is not a “recurring” payment situation.

However, some people will receive a supplemental payment if their 2020 tax return is filed and/or processed after the IRS sends them their regular third stimulus check. The IRS is calling these “plus-up” payments, and they’ll only be sent if your regular stimulus check would have been higher if it was based on your 2020 tax return . So, for example, if you received a $700 third stimulus check based on the information found on your 2019 return, filed your 2020 tax return later, and your third stimulus check would have been for $800 if it was based on information from your 2020 return, then the IRS will send you a second payment for the $100 difference.

Some married couples could also get two payments. If a joint tax return is filed, a married couple could get two separate third stimulus payments. Half may come as a direct deposit and the other half will be mailed to the address the IRS has on file. Each spouse should check the IRS’s “Get My Payment” tool separately using their own Social Security number to see the status of their payments.
