When Will Ssdi Get Third Stimulus Check

What Happens To Unused Social Security Benefits

When will Social Security recipients get the third stimulus check?

Any unused money goes to the Social Security trust funds, not a personal account with your name on it. Many people think of Social Security as just a retirement program. Most of the people receiving benefits are retired, but others receive benefits because theyre: A spouse or child of someone getting benefits.

Will The Stimulus Money Affect My Eligibility For Disability Benefits

For SSI eligibility purposes, the stimulus check wont count as income to you, and you dont need to report it as income to the Social Security Administration. Plus, its not taxable. In addition, for SSI, the stimulus money wont count as a resource unless you still have all or part of it 12 months after receiving it.

For SSDI eligibility purposes, income and assets dont matter, so the stimulus check will have no effect.

How Will I Be Receiving My Third Stimulus Check

If you didn’t submit a 2019 or 2020 tax return or used the Non-Filers tool in 2020 and you receive your monthly Social Security benefits by Direct Express card, it’s likely your third payment will be added to your Direct Express card, according to the Social Security Administration and this informational PDF from Direct Express. Note that you’ll receive one free withdrawal in addition to your usual free monthly withdrawal for monthly benefits.

For the first two 2020 stimulus payments, most SSI and SSDI recipients received them through a non-Direct Express bank account or as a paper check if they didn’t have current bank account information on file with the IRS. The IRS said SSI and SSDI recipients should have gotten their latest round of stimulus money the same way they received their earlier payments, including Direct Express for some.

What Direct Express Says

In a tweet on March 16, Direct Express said: “While we do not have specific information on timing, most people will receive their stimulus payments within the next few weeks.”

The company’s latest tweet on Friday provided no further update and only said the IRS is issuing stimulus payments to “eligible recipients over the next few weeks.”

The tweet directed users to the Get My Payment portal of the IRS website “for the most current information on individual stimulus payments.”

Those who currently don’t have a Direct Express card cannot sign up for one now to receive their stimulus payments, Direct Express advised on March 15.

Third stimulus funds sent to Direct Express card accounts that were recently closed “will be returned and the IRS will reissue the payment,” the company said.

The $1,400 Stimulus Check For SSDI & Veterans: How & When

Most people dont need to do anything but wait for their third stimulus payment to show up in their bank account or in the mail. The Internal Revenue Service is using the information that the agency has on file to distribute the $1,400 direct payments to Americans. But there in may lie the crux of the problem.

For the first round of payments the IRS used taxpayers 2018 or 2019 tax returns to check if a taxpayer was eligible for a stimulus payment. For individuals who receive Social Security benefits who dont have to file a tax return, the Social Security Administration sent files to the IRS so that the agency could get those recipients their payments. The IRS also provided a Non-Filers tool on its website so that others that dont normally file could get their payments, as well for people to update information on dependents that was missing for SS beneficiaries.

When Will Social Security Recipients Receive Their Third Stimulus Check

SOCIAL Security recipients may soon receive their third stimulus checks after their payment file was sent to the IRS on Thursday, according to reports. Millions of people who get monthly retirement or disability benefits have been left frustrated after not being able to receive an answer on why the $1,400 checks have not yet been deposited.

Third Payments Differed From Previous Economic Impact Payments

The third payments differed from the earlier payments in several respects:

  • Income phaseout amounts changed. Payments were reduced for individuals with adjusted gross income of more than $75,000 . The reduced payments end at $80,000 for individuals and $160,000 for married filing jointly. People above these levels did not receive any payment.
  • Payment amounts are different. Most families received $1,400 per person, including all dependents claimed on their tax return. Typically, this means a single person with no dependents received $1,400, while married filers with two dependents received $5,600.
  • Qualifying dependents expanded. Unlike the first two payments, the third payment was not restricted to children under 17. Eligible individuals received a payment based on all of their qualifying dependents claimed on their return, including older relatives like college students, adults with disabilities, parents and grandparents.

When Is The Latest Round Of Stimulus Payments Expected For Ssi Ssdi Beneficiaries And Veterans

Federal beneficiaries who filed a 2019 or 2020 tax return or used the Non-Filers tool in 2020 may have already received a stimulus payment, or could get one in a future batch of checks being sent out by the government.

For most everyone else, payments started going out on April 7 by direct deposit or on your Direct Express card. For those receiving payments through the mail, those checks began on April 9. If you have a foreign address and don’t typically file a tax return, electronic payments went out around April 21 and paper checks on April 23. Veterans who don’t file taxes ordinarily should have received their payment on April 14.

The IRS and Treasury will use the information it has on file to automatically send you a check . People who have already filed a 2020 tax return this year to claim missing stimulus money may find that the IRS will use this information instead of your 2019 details if it has processed your latest return .

Some people may need to file a 2020 tax return, even if they don’t usually file, so the IRS has all the information needed to send payments to cover eligible dependents.

Some people are still seeing a message that says either the IRS doesn’t have enough information yet or that they aren’t eligible for the payment. If you get this message, it doesn’t necessarily mean you aren’t eligible. If your payment status has not been updated yet, it may be updated this coming weekend.

Once your information is updated, you’ll be able to see the date you can expect to receive your stimulus payment, or the date it was deposited or mailed. You should also be able to see whether your money was direct deposited or whether you’ll be receiving the payment by mail.

What About Lost Stimulus Payments

If you did not receive any of the three stimulus payments and believe it was lost, you may request that it be traced by the IRS. There are, however, waiting periods based on the payment method.

You must wait five days from the date of a direct deposit and four weeks for payments made by check. If a lost check went to an address that you no longer live at and the mail was forwarded by the post office, you must wait six weeks from the date the IRS mailed the check. The waiting period for checks mailed to a foreign address is nine weeks from the date of mailing.

Do Ssdi And Ssi Recipients Have To File A Tax Return

People who receive monthly SSDI or SSI checks who did not file a tax return in 2018 or 2019 are not required to do anything, including filing a simple tax return, unless they have dependents. For those without minor children or other dependents, the IRS will look at Form SSA-1099 benefit statements to get the information it needs to send out the payments automatically.

Parents who have children under 17 or other dependents, who receive monthly SSDI or SSI checks, and who did not file a tax return in 2018 or 2019, however, might need to file a tax return by May 17, 2021 to claim the “Recovery Rebate Credit” for their minor children or other dependents.

Because there were three rounds of stimulus payments, there are different procedures to follow to locate a lost payment for each of them. If you did not get your payment from rounds one and two can be claimed as a recovery rebate credit on your 2020 federal income tax return. It will come to you as a credit against taxes that you owe or as a tax refund. Missing third-round payments may be claimed on your 2021 federal income tax return.

If you check the status of your payment through the IRS and discover that it was issued and never received, you may ask them to trace it. Be aware that the following waiting periods apply before you can ask for a lost payment to be traced:

  • Direct deposits â five days.
  • Checks mailed to current â four weeks.
  • Checks mailed to a former address â six weeks.
  • Checks mailed to a foreign address â nine weeks.

Do not let the waiting periods or hassle of having to deal with the IRS stand in the way of getting the money that you are entitled to receive.

The good news about your stimulus check

The good news is that when you finally get your stimulus check, it will not affect the check SSD sends you through SSI. The SSA will not treat it like an SSI resource for 12 months, and the check Social security disability sends you through SSDI will not be affected because the stimulus payment is not earned income.

Third Stimulus: Social Security Beneficiaries Receiving Checks After Holdup But Many Veterans Must Wait Until Mid

Millions of retirees and other low-income recipients of federal benefits are starting to see COVID-19 stimulus checks after weeks of administrative holdups, but many veterans still face at least another week of waiting.

The Internal Revenue Service says those on Veterans Affairs disability or pension benefits who do not typically file tax returns may receive their $1,400 stimulus checks by mid-April.

The IRS continues to review data received for Veterans Affairs benefit recipients and expects to determine a payment date and provide more details soon, the agency said in recent news release.

VA beneficiaries are among the group of vulnerable Americans who have experienced an inexplicable delay in stimulus payments approved as part of President Joe Bidens $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan, according to lawmakers on the House Ways and Means Committee chaired by Rep. Richard Neal.

In late March, the lawmakers said theyd received reports of delays in critical assistance … for millions of Americans in need, including Social Security, Supplemental Security Income , Railroad Retirement Board and VA beneficiaries. In the two previous stimulus rounds in 2020, the IRS, Social Security Administration and VA worked together to ensure prompt payments, the lawmakers said.

While the IRS reviews VA data, payment details remain unavailable on the agencys Get My Payment tool.

Third stimulus check: House members want answers on Social Security delay

Date: November 18, 2021

The IRS and the Department of Treasury provided an online Non-Filer Sign-up Tool as a convenient way for people who do not ordinarily file a tax return with the IRS to claim advance CTC payments and missing stimulus payments, or EIPs. The November 15, 2021 deadline to use the tool has passed.

Filing a 2021 Federal tax return in 2022 will allow families eligible to claim the 2021 CTC to receive their remaining benefit. Most families who received advance CTC payments only received half of the value of their credit.

If you didnt file a tax return for 2020 and you did not use the sign-up tool before the deadline passed, you can still claim your full CTC and any amount of the EIPs provided in the American Rescue Plan that you are eligible for but have not yet received, by filing a 2021 Federal tax return in 2022.

Changes To Disability Benefits For 2022

If you receive SSI or SSDI benefits in 2021, expect to see a change in the monthly payment as of January 2022. The maximum federal SSI payment of $794 in 2021 for an individual and $1,191 for a couple increases to $841 and $1,261 respectively in 2022. You may receive more each month than the federal SSI amount if you live in a state that pays a supplement to residents who qualify for SSI.

The SSDI program does not have a base monthly payment as does SSI. Social Security calculates monthly SSDI payments based, in part, on the amount of your lifetime earnings from working for an employer or through self-employment and paying Social Security taxes on the income.

How Will My Third Stimulus Payment Be Delivered To Me

The IRS said it is adjusting how it will make payments to those who receive some federal benefits with the third check.

Most SSI and SSDI recipients didnt receive their first payments via their Direct Express card, though this is usually what the government uses to distribute federal benefits. Instead, the payment arrived through a non-Direct Express bank account or as a paper check, if you didnt have your bank account information on file with the IRS.

For the second round of payments, the IRS said that SSI and SSDI recipients should have gotten their stimulus check money the same way they received their first stimulus checks. People who received the first round of payments via Direct Express should have received the second payment the same way, according to the IRS.

However, with the third check, the IRS said Social Security and other federal beneficiaries will likely receive the new payment the same way as their usual benefits, noting it will announce a payment date for this group shortly.
