Ssi And Ssdi: The Third Stimulus Payment Eligibility Requirements

When will Social Security recipients get the third stimulus check?

In the just-approved American Rescue Plan, people who receive SSI and SSDI will once again automatically qualify to receive a third stimulus check, for $1,400, as they did for the first and second round of payments.

For the first two rounds, those individuals were eligible so long as they had a Social Security number and werent claimed as a dependent on someone elses tax return, and so long as their household income didnt exceed the threshold set .

The new bill that authorized the third check expands stimulus payment eligibility to dependents of all ages, including young adults age 17 to 24 and older adult dependents. It also increases the amount set aside for those dependents to $1,400 each. Another change: This time around, the checks will be more targeted than they were in the first two rounds, meaning that single taxpayers who earn $75,000 or less per year will be eligible for the full amount, while those who earn more than $80,000 per year wont get any money. That means some families could get more money, while others could get less or none at all.

Those receiving Railroad Retirement and Veterans Affairs benefits also automatically qualify for a payment, as they did in the first and second round, the IRS said.

What Does Need More Information Mean

Others may see a “need more information” message, which the tax agency said means the payment was returned to the IRS because the U.S. Postal Service wasn’t able to deliver the check. In that case, people can use the “Get My Payment” site to provide the IRS with bank information but the tax agency said that only people who get the “need more information” message will be able to add their bank information to the portal.

How Soon Can One Get The Third Stimulus Check Under The Ssi Or Ssdi Program

The Internal Revenue Service said that the exact date when you can expect your social security plus additional remuneration will be out soon.

As expected the first installment of the $1,400 third stimulus check will be through direct deposit. The speed with which you receive your payment will depend on the way your payment has been dispatched by the authorities. The direct deposits by way of fund transfer will be the fastest followed by those who receive their payments through preloaded bank cards and paper checks.

If your information is already with the Internal Revenue Service and if you file your taxes, you will naturally receive the third stimulus check earlier. Or if you have filed for Recovery Rebate Credit on your tax returns in 2020, the IRS may use that information in its place if they have processed your claim. The Recovery Rebate Credit is to claim your missing stimulus money in the previous two installments.

The authorities will get through to you to let you know if you are eligible for the checks and also help you in the process.

If you miss out on any part of the third stimulus check, you will receive it in the 2021 tax season, which is a year later. In case the IRS follows the same guidelines as they have done this year, you will need the return to claim it.

How Much Will Dependents Contribute To The Third Stimulus Check

Under the CARES Act of March 2020, every dependent under 16 contributed $500 to the stimulus payment in the first round and $600 under the second stimulus payment.

But under the thirst stimulus check, every dependent will contribute up to $1,400. You also qualify if you welcomed a baby home in 2020.

People eligible for various benefits like the SSI, SSDI, Railroad Retirement remuneration, and Social Security retirement automatically received their stimulus check without filing returns.

But your payment could have been withheld for payment to certain creditors, or child support in the first stimulus check. Calculation error could be another reason.

To receive any previous payments, you can make use of the Recovery Rebate Credit as part of your 2020 returns. Create and check an IRS tax account to know your eligibility for the previous two stimulus checks.

Will There Be A Fourth Stimulus Check In 2021

Any missing payment amount from the third check can be refunded a year later as part of the 2021 filing season. You’ll likely have to file a tax return to claim it if the IRS follows the same pattern it does today for lost stimulus checks. There is no fourth stimulus check yet, but some are in favor of more direct payments to Americans.

Amount Of Your Third Stimulus Check

Timeline for third stimulus check for social security recipients

Every eligible American will receive a $1,400 third stimulus check “base amount.” The base amount jumps to $2,800 for married couples filing a joint tax return. You also get an extra $1,400 for each dependent in your family .

Not everyone will receive the full amount, though. As with the first two stimulus payments, third-round stimulus checks will be reduced potentially to zero for people reporting an adjusted gross income above a certain amount on their latest tax return. If you filed your most recent tax return as a single filer, your third stimulus check will be phased-out if your AGI is $75,000 or more. That threshold jumps to $112,500 for head-of-household filers, and to $150,000 for married couples filing a joint return. Third-round stimulus checks will be completely phased out for single filers with an AGI above $80,000, head-of-household filers with an AGI over $120,000, and joint filers with an AGI exceeding $160,000.

The Evolution Of The Golden State Stimulus

By February, with the states revenue estimates swelling, the Legislature negotiated and approved an even more generous $3.8 billion stimulus payment plan that included extra aid for undocumented workers.

Under this plan, the state also sent $600 payments to certain Californians living in poverty regardless of whether they work. That included very low-income families with children enrolled in CalWorks, as well as recipients of SSI or the states alternative for some immigrant groups, known as the Cash Assistance Program for Immigrants.

It took Charis Hill several days of searching online and contacting their state assemblymember to discover that they did not automatically qualify. A Sacramento-based disability activist who lives on $1,027 per month from SSDI, Hill eventually deduced that they could qualify not because they were disabled, but rather because they had done freelance writing and speaking last year.

Hill would have to file taxes, something they hadnt done in years because their earned income is far below the filing requirement. They decided it was worth it. Their expenses have jumped during the pandemic, especially as theyve opted for grocery deliveries instead of shopping in stores because they are immunocompromised.

Its really hard to see and read coverage of Newsom touting how great this is for middle-class people, said Hill, when people with disabilities are some of the most impoverished people in the whole country.

How Will I Be Receiving My Third Stimulus Check

If you didn’t submit a 2019 or 2020 tax return or used the Non-Filers tool in 2020 and you receive your monthly Social Security benefits by Direct Express card, it’s likely your third payment will be added to your Direct Express card, according to the Social Security Administration and this informational PDF from Direct Express. Note that you’ll receive one free withdrawal in addition to your usual free monthly withdrawal for monthly benefits.

For the first two 2020 stimulus payments, most SSI and SSDI recipients received them through a non-Direct Express bank account or as a paper check if they didn’t have current bank account information on file with the IRS. The IRS said SSI and SSDI recipients should have gotten their latest round of stimulus money the same way they received their earlier payments, including Direct Express for some.

Changes To Disability Benefits For 2022

If you receive SSI or SSDI benefits in 2021, expect to see a change in the monthly payment as of January 2022. The maximum federal SSI payment of $794 in 2021 for an individual and $1,191 for a couple increases to $841 and $1,261 respectively in 2022. You may receive more each month than the federal SSI amount if you live in a state that pays a supplement to residents who qualify for SSI.

The SSDI program does not have a base monthly payment as does SSI. Social Security calculates monthly SSDI payments based, in part, on the amount of your lifetime earnings from working for an employer or through self-employment and paying Social Security taxes on the income.

Third Payments Differed From Previous Economic Impact Payments

The third payments differed from the earlier payments in several respects:

  • Income phaseout amounts changed. Payments were reduced for individuals with adjusted gross income of more than $75,000 . The reduced payments end at $80,000 for individuals and $160,000 for married filing jointly. People above these levels did not receive any payment.
  • Payment amounts are different. Most families received $1,400 per person, including all dependents claimed on their tax return. Typically, this means a single person with no dependents received $1,400, while married filers with two dependents received $5,600.
  • Qualifying dependents expanded. Unlike the first two payments, the third payment was not restricted to children under 17. Eligible individuals received a payment based on all of their qualifying dependents claimed on their return, including older relatives like college students, adults with disabilities, parents and grandparents.

What Should I Know If Im Not Currently Living In The Us

If youre a Social Security beneficiary with a foreign address whose monthly benefit is deposited in a foreign bank account, you should receive your third stimulus payment through either direct deposit, Direct Express card or a check in the mail, according to the SSA . The IRS began sending out payments to this group through direct deposit and Direct Express card on April 21, and began sending paper checks in the mail for this group on April 23

If you live abroad but receive your monthly benefits through a US bank, you should have received your first two payments by direct deposit to that account. Will Disability Recipients Get 2021 Covid Stimulus Checks

Nearly half of all households in the United States have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic financially. During the pandemic, businesses have been forced to close or run with much less revenue, meaning they often have to lay off staff. This has impacted the households of business owners and their employees greatly.

Due to the substantial economic impact of the pandemic, the federal government has now approved the second round of stimulus payments for citizens. The first round of stimulus payments, approved in March of 2020, meant a payment of $1,200 per person, with considerations for children as well. More recently, in December of 2020, a second stimulus was approved for $600 per person, with similar considerations for children.

The $1,400 Stimulus Check For SSDI & Veterans: How & When

If someone, also known as a representative payee, helps manage your Social Security benefits on your behalf, that person — a relative, friend or someone appointed on behalf of an organization — should discuss your benefits with you, the beneficiary. That’s according to guidance from the Social Security Administration. So if you’d like to use your money, the person managing your account should provide you with the stimulus payment.

“Your Individual Representative Payee should have received your EIP to the same direct deposit account or Direct Express card as your monthly Social Security or SSI payment,” the SSA says on its site. “For an Organizational Representative Payee, the payee likely received the EIP electronically or by paper check in the mail.”

The SSA says representative payees aren’t required to account for the stimulus payment when they complete their annual accounting form, as it’s not considered a Social Security benefit.
