Will Social Security Recipients Get A 4th Stimulus Check Petition Calls For $1400 Payments

People on social security won’t have to file return to get stimulus check

An influential non-partisan group that lobbies on behalf of senior citizens is continuing to push Congress for a fourth stimulus payment to benefit senior citizens.

The Senior Citizens League recently sent a letter to members of Congress urging them to consider a targeted stimulus designed to benefit Social Security recipients. The group is asking for a $1,400 payment.

Weve heard from thousands of them who have exhausted their retirement savings, who have started eating just one meal a day, started cutting their pills in half because they cant afford their prescription drugs, to list just a few of the drastic steps so many have had to take because of what inflation has done to them this year, the letter from TSCL Chairman Rick Delaney said.

A $1,400 stimulus check for Social Security recipients, Delany noted, would be a way to get extra non-taxable income into the hands of senior citizens.

We believe that a special stimulus for Social Security recipients could help defray the higher costs some would face if next years COLA bumps them into a higher tax bracket, causing higher tax rates on their income and surcharges to their Medicare Part B premiums, he said.

In addition to the letter, the League has launched an online petition to gather signatures to present to Congress. You can see that here.

Financial Burden Can Fall To Caretakers

Sydney Chandler manages the finances and healthcare of her cousin, Chris Batiste, who is paralyzed. Batiste breathes through an apparatus and communicates with Chandler through a laptop, blinks and head movements.

Chandler, who is a Los Angeles-based writer, said she was livid to learn that SSDI recipients were left out of the state stimulus. To her, it was just another obstacle in the arbitrary and bureaucratic maze that people with disabilities face in trying to attain a liveable income.

Caretakers often carry a significant financial burden. Batiste receives $975 per month in SSDI, and Chandler said she contributes over $1,000 more each month to help cover his rent and full-time nursing.

If it wasnt for me, he would be one of the homeless, Chandler said, and youre telling me that you couldnt set up a portal for SSDI to input their information?

Stimulus For Va Recipients To Be Issued By Mid

Stimulus payments for Veteran Affairs benefit recipients who don’t usually file taxes could be issued by mid-April, according to the latest IRS statement.

But the federal body is “exploring whether we can include them with the other recipients,” according to a March 26 letter sent by the IRS to the House Ways and Means Committee and shared with Newsweek.

The IRS has been “working tirelessly” after it received the required paperwork from the SSA following pressure from the committee.

According to the March 26 letter sent to the committee’s chairman Rep. Richard Neal , “the IRS received the SSA files on March 24 and 25.”

The letter, signed by IRS Commissioner Charles P. Rettig, stated that the federal body intends to issue stimulus funds to eligible recipients of SSI, SSDI and RRB “whose data is valid and consistent” in the first week of April.

Why Would A Married Couple Get Two Payments

A wide range of questions remain regarding the complex program. And not everyone is seeing their payments show up in the way they might expect.

Some married couples, for example, are questioning why they received two forms of payment or just what appears to be half of their expected payment.

IRS officials noted married taxpayers who file jointly but whose tax return includes an injured spouse claim may receive their third Economic Impact Payment as two separate payments.

“In most cases, the second payment will be delivered as directed by the tax return,” according to IRS officials.

“In a few instances, one payment may come as a direct deposit and the other mailed.”

An injured spouse claim is filed with the IRS to make sure that the entire tax refund won’t be used to offset your spouse’s past debt, including past federal income taxes by your spouse but not by you.

“By filing Form 8379,” the IRS notes, “the injured spouse may be able to get back his or her share of the joint refund.”

What’s confusing is that the second Economic Impact Payment may come the same week or within weeks of the first payment.

“Both taxpayers on the tax return should check Get My Payment separately using their own Social Security number to see the status of both payments,” according to the IRS. See www.IRS.gov for the Get My Payment Tool.

What Can You Do If You Did Not Get The First Or Second Stimulus Payments

If you did not receive payment for the first or second round of economic impact payments or believe you did not receive the full amount to which you were entitled there is a way to resolve it. You must file a 2020 tax return and claim the 2020 recovery rebate credit for the amount you are owed.

Lost payments from any of the three rounds can be traced by the IRS. If you find that the IRS records indicate payment being made to you, you can request that it trace the payment. Tracing takes time and will not begin immediately. Depending on how the payment was made to you by the IRS, the following waiting periods apply:

1). Five days from the date of a direct deposit that your bank did not receive.

2). Four weeks for mailed checks.

3). Six weeks for a check mailed but forwarded to another address because you moved.

4). Nine weeks when a check was mailed to a foreign address.

If you filed a tax return within the past three years, check with your tax preparer to verify the address on the return and the method you chose to receive any tax refund that may have been due before initiating a trace through the IRS.

In September an annual report by the Treasury Department indicated that the Old-Age and Survivors trust fund is only funded for the next 12 years.

Because the fund doesnt collect enough taxes to cover what it pays out to claimants, resources for retirees are growing depleted every year.

Last years report projected the fund would be gone by 2034. The new report confirmed that funds are now only scheduled through 2033.

Once you turn 62, you can start receiving social security benefits. However, youll receive less money if you claim before your full retirement age.

Social Security Recipients and Stimulus Checks

Getting stimulus checks to federal beneficiaries, unfortunately, has been an ongoing issue for months.

The Internal Revenue Service and the Treasury Department may have sent out one hundred sixty-four million $1,400 coronavirusstimulus checks to date under President Joe Bidens American Rescue Plan, but it appears that Social Security and Supplemental Security Income beneficiaries are once again lagging behind in getting their hands on the money.

For those who fit into this category, the Social Security Administration is urging these folks to file a tax returneven without any earned income last yearas soon as possible in order to get the funds. Keep in mind that the Tax Day deadline for this year has been extended to May 17.

However, the SSA has noted that most Social Security beneficiaries and Supplemental Security Income recipients should have received their by now.

As for the current eighth batch of payments, nearly six hundred thousand checks with a value of more than $1.2 billion went to eligible individuals for whom the IRS previously did not have information to issue a payment but who recently filed a tax return. Take note that many of these checks are currently in transit if they are being delivered by USPS.

The IRS website states that if you didnt get any payments or got less than the full amounts, you may qualify for the Recovery Rebate Credit and must file a 2020 tax return to claim the credit even if you dont normally file.

Some Federal Benefit Recipients Already Have Received An Economic Impact Payment

The IRS emphasizes that federal benefit recipients in these groups who file tax returns already started to receive Economic Impact Payments earlier this month, along with other taxpayers.

Because some federal benefit recipients do not file tax returns, the IRS did not have in its tax systems the current information needed to generate the Economic Impact Payments. Last year, the IRS took the unprecedented step to receive and review data from other federal agencies and use that data to deliver payments automatically to these recipients. This action which had never occurred in previous stimulus efforts minimized risk and burdens for the American public during the pandemic. Due to regular changes in the federal benefits population, the IRS needed to receive updated information this month from other government agencies. With these critical updates, eligible federal benefit recipients who don’t normally file an income tax return will get a payment automatically in the next few weeks.

Making these automatic payments to federal beneficiaries involves a complex, multi-step process to handle recipient data from the other agencies. For the first round of Economic Impact Payments last year, recipients in these groups received payments within four to six weeks after the CARES Act was signed into law. For the American Rescue Plan signed March 11, the IRS projects that it is on track to deliver Economic Impact Payments to federal beneficiaries at the same or faster speed.

Will My Next Stimulus Payment Be Sent To My Eip Card If I Received My Last Payment There

No, we will not add funds to an EIP Card that we already issued for a previous payment. When 2021 payments are issued and the IRS does not have account information available to issue you a direct deposit, you may be mailed a check or an EIP Card.

The EIP card was mailed in a white envelope with a return address from Economic Impact Payment Card with the U.S. Department of the Treasury Seal. The card has the Visa name on the front and the issuing bank, MetaBank®, N.A., on the back. Information included with the EIP card explains that this is your Economic Impact Payment. If you received an EIP Card, visit EIPcard.com for more information.

EIP cards are sponsored by the Treasury Departments Bureau of the Fiscal Service, managed by Money Network Financial, LLC, and issued by Treasurys financial agent, MetaBank®, N.A.

Eligibility Guidelines For Stimulus Payments

Eligibility for the economic stimulus payments was limited to individuals whose adjusted gross income as reported on their federal income tax returns did not exceed $75,000. Taxpayers filing their taxes as a head of household qualified for a stimulus payment with an adjusted gross income that did not exceed $122,500. For married couples, their adjusted gross income as shown on a joint tax return could not exceed $150,000.

Individuals who receive benefits through certain government programs automatically qualify for an economic impact payment. The benefit programs include:

  • SSI
  • Social Security retirement and survivors benefits
  • Railroad retirement and survivors benefits
  • Disability, pension, and survivors benefits through the Department of Veterans Affairs

An additional requirement to automatically qualify for the economic impact payment, your income must have been too low for you to be required to file federal income tax returns for the 2018 and 2019 tax years. The eligibility requirement concerning the filing of income tax returns may apply to individuals who receive benefits through SSDI and have substantial reportable income from sources, such as investments, that do not prevent them from qualifying for SSDI but must be reported to the IRS.
