Child Tax Credit: December End
Some families received another form of stimulus aid when the IRS in July deposited the first of six monthly cash payments into bank accounts of parents who qualify for the Child Tax Credit . Families on average received $423 in their first CTC payment, according to an analysis of Census data from the left-leaning advocacy group Economic Security Project.
Eligible families received up to $1,800 in cash through December, with the money parceled out in equal installments over the six months from July through December. The aid was due to the expanded CTC, which is part of President Joe Bidenâs American Rescue Plan.
Families who qualify received $300 per month for each child under 6 and $250 for children between 6 to 17 years old. Several families that spoke to CBS MoneyWatch said the extra money would go toward child care, back-to-school supplies and other essentials.
While progressives and some Democrats urged lawmakers to continue the enhanced CTC, it appears stalled at the moment. That means families wonât receive a CTC payment in January or beyond.

Stimulus Checks: Last Day For Direct Deposit Payment Before The Irs Mails Your $1400
If your stimulus check doesn’t arrive by direct deposit by the end of today, the IRS says you’ll get a paper check or EIP card — even if there’s been a direct deposit error.
There’s a direct deadline for stimulus checks. Here’s what you need to know.
If you don’t get a stimulus check by the end of Wednesday, that means your payment will arrive in the mail as either a paper check or EIP debit card, the IRS said. In the past, problems with direct deposits being mistakenly transferred to temporary or closed accounts often let the recipient correct the mistake, but with the third check for up to $1,400 apiece, you’ll need to look to your mailbox.
An estimated 17 million stimulus checks were being processed and sent this week through direct deposit, The Washington Post reported, with 20 million headed for the USPS. That doesn’t include roughly 9 million stimulus payments for SSI, SSDI and other Social Security beneficiaries. Millions more payments are expected to arrive in the coming weeks.
But the story may not be over for people who have already received their direct deposit stimulus checks, or who may still see a payment trickle in. We’ll explain why people in this group need to keep a confirmation letter the IRS sends, are encouraged to double-check their payment total with our calculator and what to do if there’s a problem with a payment.
Don’t Miss: Irs Refund Status Stimulus Check
You Might Not Get Your Payment By Jan 15
Use the IRS Get My Payment tool to track the status of your payment. If you receive a Payment Status #2 Not Available notice, you should prepare for a longer wait: your payment will likely not be processed by Jan. 15.
Instead, youll need to claim the Recovery Rebate Credit on your 2020 tax returns. If you end up owing money on your 2020 taxes, it will reduce the amount you owe, Cagan says. If you get a refund, youll get a bigger refund. If you have zero income, youll just get the full amount back.
There are several reasons why your payment may not arrive, but here are a few common issues:
How To Track Your Stimulus Check Online

With the IRS Get My Payment tool, you can get a daily update on your payment status. The online app can also alert you with a message if there’s a problem with your payment that you may need to address. Another option is to create an online account with the IRS, if you haven’t already.
If you get sent a plus-up payment after your 2020 tax return is processed, the amount of your third payment will no longer show up in the tool, according to the IRS. In that case you will only see the status of your plus-up payment.
If you expect your payment to come in the mail, you can use a free tool from the US Postal Service to track your mailed stimulus payment.

Q: What Defines Child
The major factor, deciding who is qualified, is age. Parents or guardians will only be able to collect for their dependent if their child was less than 17 years old, on the 2019 tax filings. Dependent children can be claimed on federal tax returns so long as they are full-time students.

Stimulus 2.0 says families will get dependent credit for children under 17. If you have children in college or adult dependents like seniors, no credit will be given at this time.
Parents or guardians will only be able to collect an additional $600 if their dependent was 16 or younger when the parent submitted their 2019 tax filings.
This means a high school senior, who was 17 years old on their parents’ 2019 tax filings would not qualify. A college student, listed as a dependent on their parents’ filings would not be qualified either. This has led to a lot of frustration from parents with young adults, listed as dependents.
Things get more complicated for parents who have a baby in 2020. These parents or guardians will not be able to collect an additional $600 in their stimulus checks, because the payments are based on the 2019 tax filing.

Are More People Eligible Now For A Payment Than Before
Under the earlier CARES Act, joint returns of couples where only one member of the couple had a Social Security number were generally ineligible for a payment unless they were a member of the military. But this months new law changes and expands that provision, and more people are now eligible. In this situation, these families will now be eligible to receive payments for the taxpayers and qualifying children of the family who have work-eligible SSNs. People in this group who dont receive an Economic Impact Payment can claim this when they file their 2020 taxes under the Recovery Rebate Credit.

My Stimulus Payment Went To The Wrong Bank Account
If the Get My Payment tool tells you your check will be direct-deposited, it will also provide the last four digits of the number of the bank account into which your stimulus payment will be deposited. For the initial checks, some individuals saw that their deposit was going to an old bank account, or they even saw bank account numbers that they didn’t recognize. Here’s what to do:
- If the tool says that your payment was deposited into your bank account but you haven’t seen it yet, your bank may still be processing it.
- You won’t necessarily get the third check direct deposited, even if the first or second one was direct deposited.
- If your third stimulus payment is sent to a closed bank account, the bank is required to transfer the money back to the IRS. The IRS will not redeposit it to you or mail you a paper check. Instead, you will have to file your 2021 tax return to claim your “Recovery Rebate Credit.” See below for instructions on claiming the rebate on your tax return.
- If H& R Block submitted your last tax return and you signed up for a “refund transfer,” the IRS might deposit your stimulus payment with H& R Block . H& R Block should transfer the money to your bank account within 24 hours.
- Those who submitted their last tax return with Turbo Tax should receive their payments in the same bank accounts through which they received their tax refunds.
When Will Your Stimulus Check Arrive
The stimulus payments are being distributed to taxpayers either by direct deposit or by paper checks or debit cards arriving by mail. If youve been paying your taxes via direct deposit, the IRS should already have your banking information on file and will make the payment directly to your bank account.
For direct deposit, the IRS uses data already in its system to determine which bank account to send the payment to. That most likely happens by attaching a routing and account number to your 2020 or 2019 tax filing, as well as inputting one earlier in 2020 for receiving your first stimulus check. Those receiving payments by mail will have to wait a little longer.
This round, the Treasury Department is also working with the Bureau of the Fiscal Service to identify federal records of recent payments to and from the government to find a possible bank account alternative for delivering stimulus payments as a direct deposit. The move helped accelerate the stimulus check delivery timeline, the IRS said in a statement.
In most cases, individuals arent required to take action to receive their checks and are discouraged from contacting the IRS, according to a Treasury Department release.
The IRS and Treasury Department anticipate sending out more tranches on a weekly basis moving forward.

Why You Get A Payment Status Not Available Message
You can use the Get My Payment app to find out the projected date when your deposit is scheduled to arrive in your bank account. The Get My Payment tool will also tell you if youâre set to receive payment by paper check, along with a scheduled arrival date in the mail. However, there could be several reasons why you canât get a status update on your stimulus payment right now.
The IRS says that through midday on Wednesday, April 15, that over 6 million taxpayers had successfully found out their payment status through the new Get My Payment app. If instead, your inquiry resulted in a âPayment Status Not Availableâ message, the IRS says that this could be because:
- You are not eligible for a payment.
- You have not filed a tax return in tax year 2018 or 2019.
- You filed your tax return recently and itâs still being processed, or you provided information through Non-Filers: Enter Your Payment Info on IRS.gov.
- You receive Social Security, or are a RRB Form 1099 recipient, SSI or VA benefit recipient. Status updates for these recipients is not yet available through the Get My Payment app.
Here are more explanations for why you canât get a payment status update, or why your check simply hasnât come yet. If you cannot get a status update on your payment, the IRS says that you should check back 24 hours later and try again then.

When Will I Get My Check
Payment distribution began on December 29. The Treasury Department and the IRS plan to distribute most payments to eligible taxpayers by Jan. 15. On Jan. 5, the Wall Street Journal reported that more than $112 billion of second stimulus payments had already been sent.
You can check the status of your payment by using the IRS Get My Payment tool.
Will My Stimulus Check Be Taxed?
No. Similar to the CARES Act stimulus checks, this payment is an advance refundable tax credit, and is not taxable income.
The Get My Payment Irs Tool And How To Provide Current Bank Information

The Treasury has created an online tool where direct deposit information can be supplied to the IRS. Here is what you should do:
- On April 15, 2020, the IRS set up this online tool that allows you to track the status of your stimulus payment, and it allows you to provide your direct deposit information.
- Add the bank account number of your account.
- Add the routing number of your bank.
- Do not include a check number.
- Double-check that you have entered the correct numbers entering an incorrect number could result in a significant delay of payment.
You can use the Get My Payment tool to find out the projected date for when your deposit is scheduled to arrive in your bank account. The Get My Payment tool will also tell you if youre set to receive payment by paper check, along with a scheduled arrival date in the mail.
The tool, however, doesnt always work, and your inquiry may result in a Payment Status Not Available message, or it may need to be modified to take into account the second stimulus payment.
While Get My Payment allows you to give direct deposit information to the IRS, you cannot change bank information with the IRS if it already has an account for you on file. This is to help protect against potential fraud. You also cant change your form of payment if the IRS has already scheduled it for delivery.

Whats The Recovery Rebate Credit
The Recovery Rebate Credit is in place for individuals who were eligible to receive stimulus checks but didnt receive one or both. The Recovery Rebate Credit is authorized by the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act and the COVID-related Tax Relief Act. It is a tax credit against your 2020 income tax. Generally, this credit will increase the amount of your tax refund or decrease the amount of the tax you owe, the IRS explained on its website.
The Recovery Rebate Credit was eligible to be paid in two rounds of advance payments during 2020 and early 2021. These advanced payments of the Recovery Rebate Credit are referred to as the first and second Economic Impact Payments.
So, it is essential for those who are filing taxes this year to make sure to claim the Recovery Rebate Credit on their 2020 Form 1040 or 1040-SR.
You must file Form 1040 or Form 1040-SR to claim the Recovery Rebate Credit even if you are normally not required to file a tax return. Anyone with income of $72,000 or less can file their Federal tax return electronically for free through the IRS Free File Program.
My Third Stimulus Payment Was Too Low
Many individuals and families will find that their third stimulus checks are lower than they thought. That could be because people who make over a certain amount have part of the $1,400 payment taken away. For example, single people who make over $75,000 in adjusted gross income will have their second stimulus checks reduced by 28% of the income over $75,000. Married people filing jointly and heads of household will have their payments reduced by a similar amount.
The third stimulus payment is technically based on your 2021 income, but the IRS is using your 2020 tax return to estimate it. If your income goes down in 2021, making you eligible for a payment, or a higher payment, you’ll be able to file a tax return for your 2021 taxes and you’ll receive the stimulus money you didn’t getâit’s called a recovery rebate credit.

What If The Irs Sent The Check To A Closed Account
Because people cant update their bank account information on the Get My Payment site, theres concern that some checks might be sent to accounts that were recently closed. If thats the case, the IRS says youll have to wait until you file your 2020 tax returns.
The stimulus checks are actually a tax rebate that can be applied to your annual tax returns but that means people may be waiting weeks or even months for their stimulus money to show up through their tax refund.
