Second Stimulus Check: How You Can Track When You’ll Get Your Payment

The $600 stimulus checks that are going out to millions of people can now be individually tracked through the IRS’ “Get My Payment” website, which reopened on Monday afternoon. The site informs people about the date of their payment and whether they will receive it via direct deposit or the mailed payment date.

Still, there are some glitches that are delaying the payments of the stimulus money and creating confusion and questions for consumers. Chief among them: Some people who had their 2020 tax returns filed through tax preparers like H& R Block may have had their stimulus check sent directly to the tax firm, rather than their bank account.

This echoes a glitch that impacted payment of the first stimulus check for some people who used tax prep services and for whom the IRS didn’t have direct-deposit information. With the second round of stimulus checks, a similar issue may impact some people, with H& R Block warning its customers who used a service called a refund transfer that they might see “an account number you don’t recognize” on the “Get My Payment” website. Refund transfers are offered to allow people to tap their refund to pay their tax prep fees, according to H& R Block.

As many as 13 million people may experience a delay in receiving their money after the IRS sent the funds to closed or invalid bank accounts, according to tax-prep company Jackson Hewitt.

Irs Has Sent $6 Billion In Stimulus Payments Just In June Here’s How To Track Your Money

Your stimulus check could be on its way, along with child tax credit money and unemployment tax refunds. We’ll explain the state of the payments today.

Stimulus check payments aren’t over yet for everyone.

Don’t think that the child tax credit payments going out in just over two weeks are all the IRS is focused on. The tax agency continues to send weekly batches of the third stimulus checks, with more than $6 billion in stimulus payments going out just in June. Some of that money includes “plus-up” adjustments for people who received less money than they were supposed to get in earlier checks.

Even though many of us got our stimulus money in the earlier batches in spring, some have had to wait weeks or months for their checks. The IRS sent money first to people who’d already filed their 2019 or 2020 tax returns because those were the easiest to verify. So if you’re still waiting for your stimulus check up to $1,400 — or think you might be due a plus-up payment — we’ll tell you what to do next.

In the meantime, many experts say a fourth stimulus check is unlikely, but millions of families will be getting a good chunk of money with July’s first child tax credit payment. We can tell you how to know if you qualify and how much money you could expect over the course of the year. The IRS is also issuing unemployment tax refunds to millions of people who received jobless benefits last year, though payments are taking longer than expected. This story was updated recently.

Can A Nursing Home Or Assisted Living Facility Take The Payment From Me

No. If you qualify for a payment, its yours to keep. If a loved one qualifies and lives in a nursing home, residential care home or assisted living facility, its theirs to keep. The facility may not put their hands on it or require somebody to sign it over to them. Even if that somebody is on Medicaid.

Why Did I Receive A Debit Card

The IRS issued millions of debit cards to taxpayers in lieu of second stimulus checks, but will be sending out fewer debit cards out for the third payment. The prepaid Visa debit cards, issued by MetaBank, are called Economic Impact Payment cards. Your EIP card will arrive in a white envelope with “Economic Impact Payment Card” in the return address. You’ll need to activate the card by calling the phone number that comes with the card and choosing a 4-digit PIN number.

You can use your EIP card for purchases or use it to withdraw cash . You can also transfer the funds from your EIP card directly into your own bank account, after you register for online access.

If you use the card wisely, it will be free, but there are some fees to be aware of. If you use an out-of-network ATM or a bank teller to withdraw cash, you may need to pay a fee, and if you check the balance of the debit card, at either an in-network ATM or an out-of-network ATM, you will be charged a small fee.

The IRS has announced that the vast majority of taxpayers should receive their third stimulus payment by direct deposit this time.

My Stimulus Payment Was Too High

Some individuals whose income increased too much in 2019 were not eligible for a full stimulus payment, but they got one anyway since the IRS based the payment on their 2018 taxes. Those individuals will not have to pay back the payment.

In other cases, families were paid an extra $500 or $600 for children who were 17 or older . This could happen if the IRS took the number of children who qualified for the child tax credit in 2018 without updating children’s ages for 2019. But in other cases, it looks like the IRS took the number of dependents from a family’s 2018 tax return, without regard to their age. The IRS has said that those who received such overpayments will not have to pay them back.

What Will Get My Payment Tell Me

The “Get My Payment” site will inform you about the date of the payment and the method, which the IRS says will either be the mailed payment date or the date of direct deposit to your bank account. Checks sent in the mail will need more processing and mailing time, although the IRS didn’t specify the length of time that will be needed.

The IRS says it is prioritizing direct deposit payments to people with valid routing and account information.

My Stimulus Payment Went To The Wrong Bank Account

If the Get My Payment tool tells you your check will be direct-deposited, it will also provide the last four digits of the number of the bank account into which your stimulus payment will be deposited. For the initial checks, some individuals saw that their deposit was going to an old bank account, or they even saw bank account numbers that they didn’t recognize. Here’s what to do:

  • If the tool says that your payment was deposited into your bank account but you haven’t seen it yet, your bank may still be processing it.
  • You won’t necessarily get the third check direct deposited, even if the first or second one was direct deposited.
  • If your third stimulus payment is sent to a closed bank account, the bank is required to transfer the money back to the IRS. The IRS will not redeposit it to you or mail you a paper check. Instead, you will have to file your 2021 tax return to claim your “Recovery Rebate Credit.” See below for instructions on claiming the rebate on your tax return.
  • If H& R Block submitted your last tax return and you signed up for a “refund transfer,” the IRS might deposit your stimulus payment with H& R Block . H& R Block should transfer the money to your bank account within 24 hours.
  • Those who submitted their last tax return with Turbo Tax should receive their payments in the same bank accounts through which they received their tax refunds.

When Will I Receive My Second Stimulus Check

The IRS is releasing regular updates on the status of second stimulus checks. They said the first direct deposit payments were sent on December 29th, 2020. These will continue for the next couple of weeks. Physical checks will be mailed starting December 30th, 2020.

If you are desperate to find out more about the status of your stimulus payment, you can use the Get My Payment tool on the IRS website.

H& r Block Turbotax Problems

Intuit’s TurboTax on Tuesday also tweeted that some customers were having problems receiving their stimulus checks. “The IRS announced yesterday that due to the speed at which they issued this second round of payments, they sent some payments to an account that may be closed or no longer active,” the tax-prep service said.

The IRS said checks sent to closed or inactive accounts can’t by law be held by the financial institutions and redirected to consumers. Instead the funds will be returned to the IRS, and people who didn’t receive a check must wait until they file their 2020 tax returns to get the stimulus money in a refund. Because of that, it’s likely that those customers will face a delay.

Some customers responded on social media that they had panicked after failing to receive their funds as expected, with some expressing concern they had been a victim of fraud.

Meanwhile, the IRS said on Monday that the direct deposits could take “several days” to post to individual accounts after the official payment day of January 4. It added that some people may see their stimulus checks listed as pending or as provisional payments in their accounts.

Will You Get A Second Stimulus Check If You Got The First One

Because the second stimulus check passed by Congress is half the size of the first check, not everyone who got a payment in the spring will get money this time around.

If your 2019 reported income was $75,000 or less, under the current plan you would be eligible to receive the full $600 one-time payment. Couples who reported an adjusted gross income up to $150,000 would receive $1,200.

If you reported making more than $75,000, you would receive partial payments dropping by $5 for every $100 above the income limits.

So an individual who earned $86,900, for example, would get $5 under Congress’ approved plan. During the first round of direct money, the money phased out at $99,000 for a single filer.

If you’re a couple making $174,000 or more, or a head of household making more than $124,500, you also won’t get a second stimulus check.

How To Use Irs ‘get My Payment’

The “Get My Payment” tool is available at www.irs.gov/coronavirus/get-my-payment. To use it, you’ll need to enter your full Social Security number or tax ID number, date of birth, street address and ZIP code.

For those who are eligible, the tool will show a “Payment Status” of when the payment has been issued and the payment date for direct deposit or mail, according to the IRS’ frequently asked questions.

Not everyone who is eligible will have a payment date under “Payment Status” when they log in initially, the IRS said. According to the agency, the tool will be updated when the payment date is known.

Didnt Get The Full First And Second Payments Claim The 2020 Recovery Rebate Credit

If you didnt get the full amount of the first or second Economic Impact Payments, you may be eligible to claim the 2020 Recovery Rebate Credit by filing a 2020 tax return. The third Economic Impact Payment will not be used to calculate the 2020 Recovery Rebate Credit.

Can You Still Claim Your Second Stimulus Check

When Will Service Connected Veterans Get Stimulus Checks ...

Yes, you can still claim your second stimulus check, assuming that you’re qualified based on your adjusted gross income and other factors. While you can’t directly and immediately request it from the IRS, you can claim it when you file your 2020 tax return in the next few months.

For the 2020 tax year , there’s a newly created tax credit called the Recovery Rebate Credit. Technically speaking, if you received the first and/or second stimulus payment already, you got an advance on this credit.

On the other hand, if you didn’t receive the latest Economic Impact Payment , you can use the Recovery Rebate Credit to claim it when you file your tax return. It’s also worth noting that if you didn’t receive the first stimulus payment but were entitled to one, you can claim one as a Recovery Rebate Credit, as well.

One big distinction is that the Recovery Rebate Credit is based on your 2020 adjusted gross income, not your 2018 or 2019 AGI, which the IRS used to determine who got paid automatically. This can be a big help to the most affected households. For example, if you earned too much in 2019 to qualify for the first two stimulus payments but lost your job in early 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and resulting recession, you may be able to collect both rounds of stimulus payments when you file your 2020 taxes.
