Whats Different About This Third Stimulus Payment Compared To The Previous Two
Payments to those earning more than the defined threshold amounts are phased out at a more aggressive rate, resulting in a lower eligibility cutoff. As a result, many Americans who qualified for the first and second stimulus checks wont be eligible for this round.
However, payments for qualifying dependents in the third stimulus will match the payment amounts sent to qualifying taxpayers themselves. For many people, this will mean a larger supplemental payment than in previous stimulus distributions. And, unlike the first and second stimulus programs, the third stimulus doesnt exclude dependents over 18 years of age. This means that millions of college students, elderly and disabled dependents of eligible tax filers will qualify for the supplemental payments.
Around 90 Million Third Stimulus Payments Issued
The IRS sent around 90 million third stimulus payments on Wednesday.
“The first batch of payments primarily went to eligible taxpayers who provided direct deposit information on their 2019 or 2020 returns, including people who don’t typically file a return but who successfully used the Non-Filers tool on IRS.gov last year.
“Additional batches and payments will be sent in the coming weeks by direct deposit and through the mail as a check or debit card. The vast majority of all Economic Impact Payments will be issued by direct deposit,” the federal body said Wednesday.
The IRS noted last Friday: “Because these payments are automatic for most eligible people, contacting either financial institutions or the IRS on payment timing will not speed up their arrival.”
Who Qualifies For The Third Stimulus Check
Millions of Americans who were eligible for the $600 second stimulus checks could qualify for the third round of stimulus payments up to $1,400. However, many high-earning taxpayers who were eligible for previous stimulus checks are now excluded. The plan narrows income eligibility to exclude individuals earning over $80,000 and couples making over $160,000:
- Singles phase out at AGIs between $75,000 and $80,000.
- Heads of household phase out at AGIs between $112,500 and 120,000.
- Couples phase out at AGIs between $150,000 and $160,000.
Keep in mind that this is different from the sliding scale that was used to determine eligibility for previous stimulus payments. The IRS reduced second stimulus checks by 5% for the total amount made over the AGI limit. This means that payments went down by $5 for every $100 over the limit.
The table below breaks down third stimulus payments based on narrower income ranges for singles and joint tax filers:
|$1,400 Stimulus Checks With Narrower Income Ranges|
|$174,000 and up||$0|

Errors You’ll Need To Fix When You File
If you never updated your banking details in the IRS child tax credit portal, it’s possible you didn’t receive your money or it came as a paper check. To avoid this in the future, you can adjust those direct deposit details in the portal or when you file your taxes online.
Also, if you’d like to have your tax refund spread out across several accounts, now’s the time to do that. When setting up direct deposit on your taxes, you can add up to three different bank accounts, which can be beneficial if you’re using one as a savings account.
Direct deposit is cheaper than receiving a check.
When Can Social Security Recipients Expect The Stimulus Check
There has been a delay getting the third payments to around 30 million people who receive benefits from Social Security, Supplemental Security Income, the Railroad Retirement Board and Veterans Affairs, because the Social Security Administration did not send the IRS the necessary paperwork.
But the IRS should have received the information it needed to send the payments last Thursday, and announced Tuesday that many Social Security beneficiaries and many others who don’t normally file taxes will start getting their payments by April 7.

Three Tips For Requesting Direct Deposit From The Irs
As it is, the first recommendation for receiving the third payment faster through direct deposit is to file your 2020 tax return electronically as soon as possible, particularly if you have not provided the IRS with your direct deposit banking information.
In that case it is necessary to submit it along with the tax documentation.
Eight out of 10 taxpayers get their refunds through direct deposit. The IRS uses the same electronic transfer system to deposit tax refunds that other federal agencies use to deposit nearly 98 percent of all Social Security and Veterans Affairs benefits into millions of accounts, the IRS notes on its website.
The procedure is to request direct deposit as a refund method when using tax software or working with a tax preparer and include the account and routing number.
It is important that taxpayers submit information for accounts that are in their name, their spouses name or both if it is a joint account.
A third key to ensuring that the refund and the next stimulus payment reaches you without delay through direct deposit is to make sure you provided the correct account information.
There have been reported cases of recipients who did not receive their stimulus payments electronically on time because the account information for deposit contained errors, and the IRS had to resend the money in a paper check.
Why Can’t I Get On The Get My Payment Site
The IRS said this can happen if people don’t provide security answers that match the tax agency’s information over the course of several attempts to log in. The IRS asks for personal information such as a Social Security number, birthdate and address.
“If you can’t verify your identity, you won’t be able to use Get My Payment,” the IRS said. “Don’t contact the IRS for assistance with a lockout IRS assisters can’t unlock your account.”
However, the site will allow you to try again after 24 hours.

Whats The Maximum Amount You Can Receive
Individuals will receive up to $1,400, while married couples who file jointly will get up to $2,800. Additionally, dependents will receive as much as $1,400.
Unlike the first two payments, families will get the stimulus checks for all dependents claimed on their tax returns. That includes adult dependents, such as college students and older relatives. Previously, only children under the age of 17 qualified.
However, if youre in debt, you might not see some or even all of that money. Thats because debt collectors can garnish funds from the stimulus checks, something consumers were previously protected against.
When Will My New Stimulus Check Be Deposited
Now that President Joe Bidens $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief package has been approved, the third stimulus check perhaps the most highly anticipated one to date is already starting to be rolled out. Since the president signed the American Rescue Plan Act, first announced back in January, on Friday, many people on social media have already reported getting their $1,400 checks by direct deposit. The IRS confirmed this, stating that some recipients started receiving as early as March 12. Others, however, are still wondering when theyll be receiving their stimulus checks.
The rollout of this payment, like the two payments before it, will be a steady one. Those who are eligible to receive their $1,400 should start seeing a direct deposit from the IRS by this week, and the rollout will continue over the coming weeks. Eligible parties who have an updated mailing address on file with the IRS should be receiving their physical checks or debit cards in the mail following the same timeline as those receiving direct deposits, just as they had with the first and second checks.

How Will The Irs Know Where To Send My Payment What If I Changed Bank Accounts
Taxpayers with direct deposit information on file with the IRS will receive the payment that way. For those without direct deposit information on file with the IRS, the IRS will use federal records of recent payments to or from the government, where available, to make the payment as a direct deposit. This helps to expedite payment delivery. Otherwise, taxpayers will receive their payment as a check or debit card in the mail. If the direct deposit information is sent to a closed bank account, the payment will be reissued by mail to the address on file with the IRS. The Treasury Department will start distributing the third stimulus checks within one week or two after the law was signed. Set Up Direct Deposit When Filing Your Taxes
Setting up a direct deposit account that links directly to your bank account when you file your 2020 tax return will benefit you in two ways. You’ll get your tax refund faster. The IRS has said the best and quickest way to get your tax refund is to have it electronically deposited for free into your bank account. You can set up direct deposit to up to three different bank accounts if you’d like to split your tax refund between them.
If you set up a direct deposit and file your return electronically with tax software like TurboTax, you can also expect a faster refund than if you printed your return out and mailed it in. The IRS said it expects nine out of 10 taxpayers to receive their refund within 21 days of when they file electronically with direct deposit, if there are no issues with their tax return.
Including your direct deposit information on your tax return has another benefit: When a third stimulus check is approved, people with direct deposit set up through the IRS are typically among the first in line to get their money, as opposed to those who are mailed a check or an EIP card. Here’s how much stimulus money you could get with a $1,400 check.

- If youve supplied direct deposit information to the IRS , your Economic Impact Payment will be deposited directly into your bank account on file with the IRS.
- If you havent supplied direct deposit info to the IRS, a paper stimulus check or prepaid EIP card will be mailed to you.

How Is The Third Stimulus Check Calculated
The stimulus plan mandates the treasury to rely on 2019 and 2020 tax returns to calculate how much you could get for the third round of stimulus checks.
Congress approved limits based on adjusted gross income ranges. This means that taxpayers making less than the minimum threshold could get the full stimulus check, while those earning above it get reduced payments until they are fully phased out at higher incomes.
You can find your AGI on IRS form 1040. This is calculated by subtracting deductions like student loan interest, health savings account payments, and contributions to a traditional IRA from your gross income.
Your 2019 taxes had to be filed by July 15, 2020. And your 2020 taxes are due by the extended deadline of May 17. You can read more about when to file your tax returns for the third stimulus check, and other IRS requirements in two tax sections below.

What If I Qualify But Dont Receive My Third Stimulus Payment
If you file your taxes using an online tax-preparation service or software, its possible that your payment will be sent to a temporary bank account that has since been closed. Tax preparers customarily set up such so-called Refund Transfer accounts so they can deduct authorized fees before passing the balance along to the recipient and closing the account.
If your payment is sent to a closed account, the financial institution is required by law to bounce the funds back to the IRS. If this happens , your only recourse may be to claim a Recovery Rebate Credit when you file your 2020 taxes.
What To Know About Adding Your Direct Deposit Details
You cant use the Get My Payment tool to sign up for a new account or correct details about your payment. Even if the IRS is unable to deliver your payment to a bank account and the money is returned to the government, you wont be able to correct the details online the IRS says it will send the money again by mail.
The extended tax deadline was May 17. With the agencys delay in processing tax returns, trying to register for a new direct deposit account with your 2020 tax return wont get you into the system quickly enough. However, if you havent submitted your taxes yet, signing up for a new direct deposit account could still get you IRS money faster in the future, such as tax refunds or the upcoming child tax credit.

Wednesday Is Stimulus Check Payday For Millions Of Americans
WASHINGTON Americans waiting for the direct deposit of their third stimulus check should take a look in their bank accounts Wednesday. The Treasury Department said another 37 million payments have gone out in its second batch, reaching a total of 127 million so far since the American Rescue Plan was signed.
But this isn’t the final group of deposits, so people need to also be prepared to possibly wait a little longer.
The IRS said Monday that the new batch began processing last Friday and would have an official pay date of Wednesday, March 24. That coincides with what some people may have found when they checked the IRS Get My Payment tool when checking to see when they would receive their money.
The Treasury said the most recent batch included 17 million direct deposits, 15 million paper checks and 5 million prepaid debit cards.
For some couples who file their taxes jointly, this may represent the second half of their total stimulus. The IRS confirmed that some couples were getting their money across more than one payment. Members of a that was launched after people reported only getting half their stimulus money last week have reported seeing the other half pending in their accounts.
The IRS said paper checks will arrive in a white envelope from the U.S. Department of the Treasury. It will look similar to a tax refund check, but it will say “Economic Impact Payment” in the memo field.
Usps Is A Good Way To Track Your Paper Check

Checks Could Go Out In A Matter Of Days After The American Rescue Plan Is Signed Into Law
If all goes as planned, millions of Americans will soon be getting another stimulus payment. This time, its up to $1,400 for individuals, $2,800 for couples, and an additional $1,400 for dependents.
The payments under the American Rescue Plan, which was adopted by the Senate on Saturday, are the third and so far the largest of the payments sent to Americans under coronavirus relief packages over the last year.
The payments will be distributed by the IRS. By now, the agency has experience in delivering the money quickly to eligible individuals and families.
But, no doubt, there will be some glitches, which is to be expected given the number of payments that could be sent in a matter of days.
The IRS has said it will issue information and details on the distribution of thisthird payment once the bill is passed by Congress and signed into law by President Biden. The House is expected to vote on the measure Tuesday or Wednesday, and Biden has said he will move swiftly to distribute the relief.
