Why Would My Tax Refund Come In The Mail Instead Of Direct Deposit
There are a couple of reasons that your refund would be mailed to you. Your money can only be electronically deposited into a bank account with your name, your spouse’s name or a joint account. If that’s not the reason, you may be getting multiple refund checks, and the IRS can only direct deposit up to three refunds to one account. Additional refunds must be mailed. Also, your bank may reject the deposit and this would be the IRS’ next best way to refund your money quickly.
It’s also important to note that for refunds, direct deposit isn’t always automatic. Just in case, sign in to your IRS account to check that the agency has your correct banking information.
Will There Be Income Restrictions
Yes. Your adjusted gross income will be used to determine whether you qualify, and if so, how much you will get.
- If your AGI for 2019 or 2020 is $75,000 , then you will get the full amount. For AGIs above those amounts, your payment will be reduced proportionately until it reaches zero at $80,000 and $160,000, respectively.
- For Heads of Households, the amounts will be $112,500 and $120,000.

What If I Havent Received Previous Stimulus Payments For Which I Was Eligible
The Internal Revenue Service and the Treasury Department have finished delivering the first and second Economic Impact Payments. You can verify your final payment status by visiting Get My Payment at irs.gov.
If you were eligible for the first and/or second stimulus and either didnt receive an Economic Impact Payment or received one in the wrong amount, you can claim a Recovery Rebate Credit to correct the error. You must file a 2020 federal tax return to claim this credit, even if you are otherwise not required to file.
What Information Will You Need

Both IRS tools will show you one of three messages to explain your tax return status.
- Received: The IRS now has your tax return and is working to process it.
- Approved: The IRS has processed your return and confirmed the amount of your refund, if you’re owed one.
- Sent: Your refund is now on its way to your bank via direct deposit or as a paper check sent to your mailbox.
Whos Eligible For A Third Economic Impact Payment
- Individual tax filers with adjusted gross income up to $75,000 and head-of-household filers with adjusted gross income up to $112,500 will receive the full payment of $1,400, plus $1,400 for each eligible dependent.
- For filers with incomes above the $75,000/$112,500/$150,000 thresholds, payments are reduced at a much sharper rate than with the first and second stimulus payments. Payments decrease to zero for single filers at $80,000, for heads of household at $120,000 and for married couples at $160,000.

Can You Use The Portal If You Didn’t File A Tax Return
You couldn’t use the “Get My Payment” tool to track the status of your first stimulus check if you didn’t file a 2018 or 2019 federal income tax return. However, there was another online tool that non-filers could use to give the IRS with the information it needed to process a payment.
The non-filers tool wasn’t used for second stimulus checks, though. Instead, if you didn’t file a 2019 tax return, and you didn’t use the non-filers tool to get your first-round payment, then you have to wait to claim your second stimulus check money as a Recovery Rebate credit on your 2020 return.
The IRS is not using the non-filers tool for third-round stimulus checks, either. As a result, if you don’t file a 2019 or 2020 tax return, you’ll have to claim any money you’re owed as a Recovery Rebate credit on your 2021 return, which you won’t file until next year. However, you can avoid having to wait until next year by filing a 2020 return before the May 17, 2021, deadline.
Can You Track The New Stimulus Check

Yes. The IRS’s Get My Payment tool, which updated over the weekend, allows you to do just that. You can submit your information here to find out what your stimulus payment date is and the form it’ll come in.
If Get My Payment returns a message that says “Payment Status Not Available,” it means you either don’t qualify for the third stimulus or the IRS hasn’t yet processed your check. If it says “Need More Information,” it tried to send your money but there was a problem with delivery.
That said, even Get My Payment nods to the wide range of payment dates. Though the first cache of this round of stimulus checks has already gone out, it notes that “additional batches of payments will be sent in the coming weeks by direct deposit and through the mail as a check or debit card.”

While major banks in the U.S. started delivering $1,400 stimulus checks in March, the federal relief payments continue to arrive at millions of households struggling to make ends meet amid the coronavirus-hobbled economy.
The Internal Revenue Service has delivered more than 165 million payments, with a total value of approximately $388 billion, the agency said Wednesday. The latest round includes 1 million payments, with the IRS noting they have an official payment date of May 12. That means the most recent recipients will receive a direct deposit on Wednesday, or soon get a paper check or pre-paid debit card in the mail.
The timing and delivery of checks has been a cause of anxiety for some people, especially for those who receive government benefits such as Social Security and don’t typically file taxes. The IRS prioritized sending checks to people who have already filed their 2019 or 2020 tax returns, since the agency was able to quickly verify eligibility based on income and also determine where to mail or direct deposit the checks.
The agency said it’s sending another 500,000 payments to eligible people who recently filed a tax return but for whom it didn’t previously have information to issue a stimulus check.
