What Do Federal Benefit Recipients Who Dont File Taxes Need To Get Payment
No further action will be needed to receive a direct payment for most beneficiaries of Social Security retirement and disability, railroad retirees and those who received veterans benefits last year. Like the first two rounds of stimulus checks, the new payments will be sent out the same way benefits are normally paid.
But there are instances where some people receiving the automatic third payment based on their federal benefits information will need to file a 2020 tax return, regardless of whether they normally dont file one.
For instance, if your payment doesnt include a check for your qualified dependent, and that person didnt get one, the federal benefits recipient would need to file a 2020 tax return to be considered for the additional payment.
Also, those who are eligible but didnt get the first or second stimulus check or got less than the full amount may need to file a 2020 tax return to be eligible for the 2020 Recovery Rebate Credit. More information on that can be found here.

$ 5000 From The Irs For At Least Some Newborns
Lets look back at the previous two sections and do the calculation.
If your child was born into a family in 2021, you may not have reported it to the IRS. They may also not have chosen to sign up for a monthly child tax credit.
In that scenario, putting a child down in response to a 2021 tax return could be up to $ 5,000. Thats $ 1,400 from the third stimulus check in the form of a recovery rebate credit, and $ 3,600 for a full child tax credit.
This assumes that the parent is within the income criteria above.

Why $1400 Checks And Not $2000

Biden’s plan called for $1,400 checks for most Americans, which on top of the $600 provided in the most recent COVID-19 bill would bring the total to the $2,000 that Biden has called for.
But Biden initially did not make that differentiation. Biden said on January 4 while campaigning for Democrats Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock ahead of Georgia’s Senate runoff elections, “Their election will put an end to the block in Washington of that $2,000 stimulus check. That money that will go out the door immediately.”

Amount Of Your Third Stimulus Check
Every eligible American will receive a $1,400 third stimulus check base amount. The base amount jumps to $2,800 for married couples filing a joint tax return. You also get an extra $1,400 for each dependent in your family .
Not everyone will receive the full amount, though. As with the first two stimulus payments, third-round stimulus checks will be reduced potentially to zero for people reporting an adjusted gross income above a certain amount on their latest tax return. If you filed your most recent tax return as a single filer, your third stimulus check will be phased-out if your AGI is $75,000 or more. That threshold jumps to $112,500 for head-of-household filers, and to $150,000 for married couples filing a joint return. Third-round stimulus checks will be completely phased out for single filers with an AGI above $80,000, head-of-household filers with an AGI over $120,000, and joint filers with an AGI exceeding $160,000.
You can use our handy Third Stimulus Check Calculator to get a customized estimated payment amount. All you have to do is answer three easy questions.

Contact the Social Security Administration at 1-800-772-1213 or find a Social Security office near you if your direct deposit or debit card funds arent made on time. The SSA asks that you wait three days before reaching out to them, however.
The risk of your check being stolen is virtually eliminated if you use the Direct Deposit option because the money is transmitted electronically and directly to your bank account.

Will The Stimulus Affect My Taxes For This Year Or Next Year
None of the three stimulus checks are considered income, and therefore arent taxable. They wont reduce your refund or increase what you owe when you file your taxes this year, or next. They also wont affect your eligibility for any federal government assistance or benefits.

What’s Holding Up New Stimulus Checks
Chief among the issues are whether Republican lawmakers would support the package. But with GOP support so far failing to materialize, Democrats are pushing forward with the budget reconciliation process, which would next direct House and Senate committees to discuss spending priorities.
“When Congress colors in the details of the stimulus package, investors should expect some deviation from the original Biden plan, as even a Congress closely in sync with the president will look to put their own imprint on the bill,” Hammond wrote in a February 2 research note.
The plan to provide more direct aid to low- and middle-class households could help lift GDP by 0.7%, although other measures in the bill such as a higher minimum wage and aid to states could boost GDP growth by 1.5%, according to a January 18 report from Oxford Economics Chief U.S. Economist Gregory Daco. He’s predicting a $1.3 trillion stimulus package will be approved before the end of March.
“The additional stimulus will be welcome given the extent of labor market damage, with still 10 million fewer jobs than before the pandemic,” he and Oxford Economics lead U.S. economist Lydia Boussour wrote on January 22.
Here’s what analysts are predicting about the $1,400 checks and other spending proposals.
What If I Didnt Get The First And Second Stimulus Payments
The IRS said anyone who was eligible to get the first or second stimulus payments but didnt, needs to claim a 2020 Recovery Rebate Credit and file a 2020 tax return. Even if someone isnt required to file? The IRS says yes.
However, the IRS said that the third payment of $1,400 will not be used to calculate the 2020 Recovery Rebate Credit.

Are The $1400 Checks A Done Deal
Not yet, because theres increasing debate about whether the checks should be targeted to lower-income households, including among some Democrats. Said Paul Ashworth in a note to investors:
There is still uncertainty whether all the Senate Democrats will support President Joe Bidens full plan, with Joe Manchin already expressing doubts about the need to send $1,400 stimulus cheques to those that might not need the money and warning that he wouldnt support a rise in the minimum wage to $15 per hour by 2025, roughly double what it is now.
The latest GOP proposal would lower the payment to $1,000, which would be paid to single people earning up to $40,000 and married couples with income up to $80,000. The payment amounts would would decrease incrementally by income level until cutting off entirely for single people earning over $50,000 and married couples earning more than $100,000.
But the GOP plan isnt likely to move forward, given the Democrats push to advance Mr. Bidens $1.9 trillion package. Theres an 85% chance a scaled-down package will be passed in the first three months of 2021, predicts Height Securities Hammond. Because of the ongoing support for additional direct aid to households, checks are likely to be included in that smaller package, analysts say.

Tax Refunds Could Give You Money

Other federal money that could offer relief to some Americans is the IRS tax refunds. The IRS was forced to delay the 2020 tax returns due to COVID-19. This year, however, the agency is unlikely to delay the tax filing deadline.
For most filers, the last day to file a 2021 tax return is April 18, 2022. Some filers can apply for a six-month extension, but they need to apply for the extension before April 18 to avoid any fines.
If you file the return online, you can check the status of your return after just 24 hours. You can use the IRS2Go app or Wheres My Refund or IRS.gov, to check the status of your refund. In case you file your return by mail, then you have to wait for about four weeks to get an update on your tax return status.
Unemployment benefits are another aid that may be available to some workers. Though the federal unemployment benefits ended in September 2021, workers could still claim the unemployment benefits that their states usually offer.
Similarly, federal stimulus checks may have ended but people may still get stimulus checks from their state governments. Several state and local governments have come up with different ways to offer relief to their citizens, such as Californiaâs Golden State Stimulus program.

In some instances, the IRS offsets a portion of the payment sent to a spouse who filed an injured spouse claim if it has been offset by the non-injured spouses past-due child support. The FAQ on the IRS stimulus FAQ www.irs.gov/coronavirus/economic-impact-payment-information-center website states: The IRS is aware that in some instances a portion of the payment sent to a spouse who filed an injured spouse claim with his or her 2019 tax return has been offset by the non-injured spouses past-due child support. The IRS is working with the Bureau of the Fiscal Service and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Child Support Enforcement, to resolve this issue as quickly as possible. If you filed an injured spouse claim with your return and are impacted by this issue, you do not need to take any action. The injured spouse will receive their unpaid half of the total payment when the issue is resolved.
Third Stimulus Check: Potential Timeline For $1400 Payments
WASHINGTON Before being sworn into office, President Joe Biden announced a $1.9 trillion coronavirus plan which included $1,400 stimulus checks to struggling Americans. The American Rescue Plan would deliver another round of aid to stabilize the economy while the public health effort seeks the upper hand on the pandemic. The bill would also include pumping billions of dollars in aid to state and local governments as well as additional aid to businesses impacted by the pandemic.
So, now that the presidency, U.S. House and Senate are controlled by Democrats, when might Americans start getting a third Economic Impact Payment?

Irs Has Sent $6 Billion In Stimulus Payments Just In June Heres How To Track Your Money
Your stimulus check could be on its way, along with child tax credit money and unemployment tax refunds. Weâll explain the state of the payments today.
Stimulus check payments arenât over yet for everyone.
Donât think that the child tax credit payments going out in just over two weeks are all the IRS is focused on. The tax agency continues to send weekly batches of the third stimulus checks, with more than $6 billion in stimulus payments going out just in June. Some of that money includes âplus-upâ adjustments for people who received less money than they were supposed to get in earlier checks.
Even though many of us got our stimulus money in the earlier batches in spring, some have had to wait weeks or months for their checks. The IRS sent money first to people whoâd already filed their 2019 or 2020 tax returns because those were the easiest to verify. So if youâre still waiting for your stimulus check up to $1,400 â or think you might be due a plus-up payment â weâll tell you what to do next.
Can My Recovery Rebate Credit Be Garnished
The first and second rounds of stimulus checks authorized in March 2020 and December 2020 were protected from federal and state debt offsets, and even private debt collectors in some cases.
Unfortunately, the same protections dont apply when these payments are claimed as the Recovery Rebate Credit on your 2020 return. Remember, you can only claim the credit if youre missing a stimulus check you qualify for, or you received too little based on your 2020 income and tax situation.
Your stimulus tax credit can be used to offset state or federal debts, like past-due child support . Your credit cannot be used to offset federal taxes you owe for prior years, according to guidance .

You Have New Or Older Dependents
Some people may get their checks quickly, but find that the amounts are incorrect that could most likely be due to their dependents.
The third stimulus check entitles dependents to receive $1,400 each, but the IRS might not be aware of your children in some cases. For instance, if you had a baby in 2020 but havent yet filed your tax return, the IRS will rely on your 2019 tax return to determine how much you are owed, which wont show the new child because they hadnt yet been born.
Example: A couple with a baby born in 2020 should receive $4,200, but if the IRS doesnt have their 2020 tax return, it will issue a payment of $2,800 for the two adults in the family. But IRS and Treasury officials said March 12 that families in this situation can be assured they will eventually get the additional $1,400 for their baby.
When they file their 2020 tax return, the IRS will check if they are owed more, such as in the case of a baby born last year. If that happens, the IRS will automatically issue the additional $1,400 check to the family, officials said.
Similar issues could occur for people who normally dont file tax returns and who used the non-filers tool to report their dependents last year. Because the first two rounds of checks excluded dependents above the age of 17, the IRS didnt count older teens and adult dependents on the non-filer tool.
