Review Steps To Know When Your Third Stimulus Check Arrives
Many Americans are expecting to receive a third stimulus check as part of a $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief package in 2021. Some details may change before the bill actually passes, such as who qualifies, how large are the payments, and when will stimulus checks arrive. However, as soon as the bill passes the payment process will begin right away.
Lets review some helpful tips and information you can use to monitor the arrival of your stimulus payment. Well also address a common account question you may have.
What If I Made Less Money This Year Do I Qualify For More Stimulus
Yes. If your income was lower this year than your previous year on file with the IRS, you can claim that money back on your taxes. For example, if you made $150,000 in 2019 income, but you were laid off in the first round of layoffs in 2020 and only made $20,000 this year, you can recoup that difference.
File early and file electronically, the IRS does plan to get these funds out, says Pancotti.
Track When Your Stimulus Check Will Be Deposited To Your Bank Account
Stimulus payments are on the way and more than 80 million Americans have already had money direct deposited into their bank accounts.
But what if you owe money to the government?
The good news here is that money cant be withheld for things like unpaid taxes or other government debts.
However, there is one major exception: child support.
The Treasury Department said anyone who owes child support will see that money taken out of their check, and there are no exceptions for financial hardship.
Private banks can also go after your check for things like overdraft fees or unpaid loans.
So if you want to check on the status of your payment, go to the Get My Payment page on the IRS website.

Why Should I Double Check My Payment Total With The Stimulus Check Calculator
Delivering a third stimulus check in the middle of tax season has complicated matters. If you filed your taxes early and the IRS processed your 2020 return, it may use that information to calculate your stimulus total. If not, your third check will be based on 2019 totals, or other information the agency has .
If your estimated total from the stimulus calculator differs greatly from what you received through direct deposit, it may signal that the IRS owes you money for dependents that were unaccounted for, or a different life circumstance, like if your adjusted gross income from 2020 is lower than from 2019. Again, we recommend holding on to that IRS confirmation letter to file a future claim.
You may want to set up direct deposit with the IRS if you don’t have it already in place.
Check The Get My Payment Tool

The IRS website has been uploading data for your third stimulus payment into a tool on its website called Get My Payment. If your information has been updated, you’ll be able to see the date you can expect to receive your stimulus payment, or the date it was deposited or mailed. You should also be able to see whether your money was direct deposited or whether you’ll be receiving the payment by mail.
Many people are seeing a message that says either the IRS doesn’t have enough information yet or you aren’t eligible for the payment. This message doesn’t necessarily mean you aren’t eligible for the payment. This information may be updated this coming weekend.
Here are some of the issues people are seeing, either with their actual deposit or with the Get My Payment tool.

How Do I Claim My Third Stimulus Payment
The IRS said in early March that most residents who received SSI and SSDI benefits in 2020 should not need to take any action to get their third stimulus payment.
The IRS will automatically send third stimulus payments to those who didnt file a tax return but are recipients of SSI, SSDI, Railroad Retirement and Veterans Affairs benefits.
However, some of those expecting to receive an automatic third stimulus payment based on their federal benefits information may need to file a 2020 tax return even if they dont usually file taxes.
If your third payment does not include a payment for your qualified dependent who did not receive a third payment, you must file a 2020 tax return to be considered for an additional third payment even if you dont normally file, the IRS advised on March 4.
On March 4, the federal body said it is working with the aforementioned federal benefits agencies to get updated information for 2021 to assist with stimulus payments at a date to be determined.

What If You Don’t Have A Bank Account For Direct Deposit
If you don’t have a bank account and still want to set up direct deposit with the IRS, you have options. The first, and most obvious, is to open a new bank account.
The FDIC’s GetBanked page includes a banking locator service and info to help you review and choose a bank. If you prefer a nonprofit, member-owned banking option, consider a credit union. Visit CNET’s best checking account and best saving account features for additional information on bank accounts.
If you don’t want to open a bank account, you can also receive your tax refund via direct deposit with a prepaid debit card. All cards that accept direct deposit will have account and routing numbers that you can enter in your tax return.

Will The Irs Reload A Prior Pre
Some people who received one or both of their first two stimulus payments on a pre-paid debit card may wonder if the IRS will reload that card with the $1,400 for the latest round of payments. The answer is no, the IRS says.
If the IRS now has bank account information for you, it will send the money via direct deposit. If not, it will either issue a check or a pre-paid debit card, but the latter will come in the form of a new card, the tax agency said.
People should look for a white envelope with the return address “Economic Impact Payment Card” accompanied by a U.S. Treasury Department seal. The card says “Visa” on the front, and the issuing bank, MetaBank, on the back.
Did Your Stimulus Check Arrive Check Your Bank Account
Has your stimulus check arrived?
Heres what you need to know.
Stimulus Checks
If you check your bank account and find your stimulus check deposited, you may be among the first taxpayers to receive a stimulus check. The first stimulus checks were deposited into bank accounts starting last Thursday. Taxpayers shared the good news on social media, with some posting photos of their online bank accounts.
Single taxpayers who earned less than $75,000 and filed a 2018 or 2019 federal income tax return can expect a $1,200 stimulus check. Married couples filing jointly who earned less than $150,000 can expect $2,400 and each dependent child age 16 or younger can receive $500.
What if your stimulus check isnt in your bank account?
If your check is in the first batch of stimulus checks, you may receive your stimulus check in your bank account by April 14, 2020. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin has said most Americans will receive their stimulus check by April 17. If you dont receive your stimulus check by then, dont panic. Most likely, one of two things has happened:
- You dont qualify for a stimulus check based on your adjusted gross income earned or
- You didnt provide your banking information to the IRS on your 2018 or 2019 federal tax return.

Get My Payment Says Payment Issued But I Haven’t Received It
The IRS says that it may take three to four weeks to receive a check after it’s mailed. If it has been weeks since the Get My Payment tool says the payment was mailed, and you haven’t received it, you can request a payment trace. The IRS will research what happened to your check if the check wasn’t cashed, you will need to claim the “Recovery Rebate Credit” on your next tax return. If the IRS finds that the check was cashed, you’ll receive a claim package from the Treasury Department with a copy of the cashed check and instructions on filing a claim.
Similarly, if the Get My Payment tool says your payment was direct-deposited, but the money doesn’t show in your bank account after five days, first check with your bank. If the bank says it hasn’t received a payment, you can request a payment trace.
To request a payment trace, call 800-919-9835 or fill out IRS Form 3911, Taxpayer Statement Regarding Refund.
I Received A Second Payment But My Spouse Didnt
There have been cases where a couple submit their tax returns as married filing jointly, and both spouses are eligible for a $1,400 stimulus check, but one spouse received a payment and the other did not . This is an error on the IRSs part. Unfortunately, the spouse who didnt receive a check will have to claim a Recovery Rebate Credit on his or her 2020 tax return. See below for instructions on claiming the rebate on your tax return.

Will There Be A Third Stimulus Check Of $2000
Maybe. The CASH Act bill, which included $2,000 stimulus checks for qualifying individuals, passed in the House in December but was blocked from reaching the Senate floor by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell .
But with Democrats almost certainly taking a slim majority in the Senate, a third stimulus check is back on the table. On Tuesday, Joe Biden said that if Democrats Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock won their respective Senate races in Georgia, he would send $2,000 checks to qualifying Americans. Its unclear if this would be an additional $2,000 on top of the $600 checks that have already been sent out, or that Americans would be sent the difference between the two amounts.
Should I Be Worried If I Didnt Get My Stimulus Check

If you didnt get your first or second stimulus check, dont worry you can still claim the payment in 2021 as a tax credit. The stimulus checks are a federal tax credit for the 2020 tax year, known as the Recovery Rebate Credit. You can claim the Recovery Rebate Credit by filing your taxes in 2021 for Tax Year 2020.

As Mnuchin said, direct payments may begin to hit bank accounts as early as Tuesday evening and continue into next week. Some people may see the direct deposit payments as pending or as provisional payments before Jan. 4, 2021, the official payment date, the IRS said in a statement.
If the IRS doesnt have your direct deposit information, it will likely take longer for you to get your hands on the money. Paper checks will be mailed beginning Wednesday, Mnuchin said.

‘payment Status Not Available’
If you are getting “Payment Status Not Available” from the IRS stimulus check tracker — don’t be alarmed.
According to the IRS, if you receive that message it can mean one of three things:
- You are not eligible for the payment.
- The payment has yet to be processed
- The IRS doesn’t have enough information to issue the payment to you
The agency said it will continue to issue the 2021 Economic Impact Payments throughout 2021.
Stimulus Check Payout Schedule
- Direct Deposit payments will generally be deposited 2 to 3 days after the IRS confirms income eligibility for the payout.
- Physical checks will take at least 6 to 8 weeks to be mailed out.
Social Security and Disability recipients who are eligible for the payment will get the stimulus checks/payments deposited the same way they currently get payments today. SSDI will automatically get a check based on the 1099 they get and do not need to do anything.
Can my stimulus check be garnished?
The CARES act has provisions to ensure the stimulus check payment cannot be garnished for overdue loans or back taxes , but this does not apply to child support payments that are in arrears. If youre behind on child support your stimulus check can be fully or partially garnished either wont get a stimulus check or will receive a reduced one.
Couples who file jointly and are eligible for the $2400 payment may also see smaller stimulus checks where one spouse has overdue child support from a previous relationship or marriage. Even if your spouse is solely responsible for the arrears or overdue payment, the shared stimulus check will likely be garnished.
Note there are some private debt collectors that are saying that stimulus payments can be intercepted to cover their overdue loan payments based on some vague wording the CARES act. However Congress and State legislatures are working to close this loophole.
