Some people may have even thrown out their debit card stimulus payment without knowing. There’s also the issue of stimulus checks being sent to the deceased.

What Are Stimulus Checks

A stimulus check is an amount of money sent by the U.S. government to a taxpayer. These checks have the purpose of stimulating the economy, giving consumers some extra money that they can spend.

Once the consumers spend this money, it will boost the consumption and drive revenue towards manufacturers and retailers therefore, giving the economy a boost. Stimulus checks can be larger federal packages, as it was with the apparition of the 2020 CARES Act.

That being said, stimulus checks were used during the Great Depression as well a moment when the economy also found itself at a standstill. If the taxpayer has a recorded debit card, then they will receive their money into that account. However, in its absence, taxpayers can also receive stimulus checks in the mail.

Parents will get their Child Tax Credit payment on Aug. 13, instead of on the 15th of the month.

Last month, parents received the first payment from the expanded Child Tax Credit that was authorized by the most recent coronavirus stimulus bill. The coronavirus relief legislation, which was called the American Rescue Plan Act, provided for eligible parents to receive either $3,600 or $3,000 .

These expanded Child Tax Credit payments were in addition to the $1,400 stimulus checks, and they are meant to help parents cope with childcare expenses which the pandemic may have affected.

The stimulus money made available by the expanded Child Tax Credit is being deposited into peoples bank accounts at a rate of $250 or $300 per month. The deposits will be made in July, August, September, October, November and December. In total, half the amount of the credit will be sent in these monthly deposits and parents can claim the rest of the stimulus money they are owed on their tax return next year.

The first payment was delivered on July 15, 2021, but parents can expect to see the August payment a little sooner.

If Your Third Stimulus Amount Is Less Than Expected

The IRS isn’t particularly big on communicating how much money it calculates for your stimulus check. You won’t find that figure in the agency’s online tracking tool, but you will see it in the confirmation letter you’ll receive in the mail.

So what happens if you use our stimulus check calculator and notice the numbers seem way off, or the IRS letter quotes an amount you didn’t receive? Start by triple-checking your qualifications to make sure you’re eligible for the total you expect. Remember the IRS is automatically sending plus-up payments after the agency receives your 2020 tax return. If you had a baby or otherwise added a dependent in 2020, you won’t need to file an amended tax form to claim the supplement.

The IRS could open up claims for missing stimulus money before its Dec. 31 deadline to stop sending checks. If not, you might have to wait until you file your 2021 taxes in 2022 to claim it — even if you’re a nonfiler who isn’t typically required to file taxes.

Who Is Eligible For A Third Stimulus Check

Some people may or may not be eligible for receiving a stimulus check. Among people that can expect this check include:

  • Individuals with an $80,000 AGI or less
  • Head of household with a $120,000 AGI or less
  • Couples filing jointly with a $150,000 AGI or less
  • Dependents of every age, if the guardian qualifies
  • Families with mixed US citizenship
  • US citizens who live abroad
  • Citizens living on US territories
  • VISA holders
  • Incarcerated people
  • Non-citizens that pay taxes

Most people living in the US can indeed be expected to receive a stimulus check, provided they have US citizenship, have a visa, or at least pay U.S. taxes. With that in mind, certain categories are disqualified from receiving a stimulus check and this will precisely help you determine whether you are eligible for receiving it as well or not.

Eligibility is based on your adjusted gross income, and the amount of money that you receive will be calculated on the same basis.

Wheres My Stimulus Check Coming

When will the third round of stimulus checks be sent?

You can check the stimulus checks payment using a special tool, i.e., IRSs Get My Payment Tool . This tool updates you whether your stimulus check was sent to you or not. Your money can be sent to you via mail and direct deposit.

On the other hand, various banks offer early direct deposits, which applies to your paycheck. However, this process will extend your stimulus check to a great extent.

If you get a not available message on the IRSs tool, then it means that either you will not be paid right now or you are not eligible for the second or next stimulus check.

What To Do If You’re Missing Money From The First Two Stimulus Checks

Plus-up payments are going out weekly along with the third round of checks, but they may not be the only money you’re due. For money missing from the first two checks, you need to claim that on your 2020 taxes. We suggest making sure you know how to find out your adjusted gross income. You may be eligible to claim the 2020 Recovery Rebate Credit for claiming missing money from the first two checks.

Also, last week, the IRS launched a new online for familes that don’t file taxes called the “Non-filer Sign-up Tool.” Its purpose is to help eligible families who don’t normally file a tax return enroll in the monthly child tax credit advance payment program, which is slated to begin July 15. However, the tool is also for those who did not file either a 2019 or 2020 tax return and did not use the previous nonfilers tool last year to register for stimulus payments.

In other words, individuals who experience homelessness or make little or no income can use this tool to enter their personal details for the IRS’ records so as to receive the $1,400 stimulus checks or claim the recovery rebate credit for any amount of the first two rounds of payments that might have been missed. Tax nonfilers may need to be proactive about claiming a new dependent, too.

Don’t Throw Away The Irs Letter About Your Stimulus Payment

Hold on to that IRS letter that confirms your stimulus payment, including giving the amount and how the IRS sent your money. That letter from the IRS — Notice 1444-C — is your proof that the IRS sent a payment in case you don’t actually receive it or if you received less than you qualify for and need to claim the missing amount later. Here’s more on what to do with that IRS letter.

Are Adult Dependents Getting Third Stimulus Checks

The new stimulus plan expands eligibility to adult dependents, including college students, elderly relatives and disabled adults.

The text of the plan redefines the term dependent according to section 152 of the tax code, which includes both qualifying children and adults: Section 152 provides that the term dependent means a qualifying child ) or a qualifying relative ).

While the plan pays out $1,400 for each qualifying dependent, families should keep in mind that the targeted lower income ranges exclude them if they earn over $160,000.

For reference, the second stimulus checks provided additional $600 payments for qualifying dependents under the age of 17. So a couple filing jointly with three eligible children could get a maximum second payment of $3,000 .

Under the first and second rounds of stimulus checks, children and adult dependents over the age limit could not get an additional payment, and they did not qualify for a stimulus check of their own either.

With the new stimulus plan, however, both joint filers and heads of household get an additional $1,400 payment for each dependent, regardless of age. The table below breaks down the third stimulus checks for heads of household with one dependent:

State Residents Can Get Money From The State

Check your bank account: stimulus checks started arriving this week ...

Remember, if you live in certain states, you are available to potentially get more money. California has begun sending out Golden State stimulus checks for $600. These are part of a $100 billion relief initiative. Round one of the checks went out at the end of August.

In Michigan, if you are a teacher who worked in the school in the year, you have gotten money. They have sent out $3,000 to teachers who worked in a school. Other teachers and support staff received $500. Tennessee and Georgia followed suit with that, providing $1,000 to full-time teachers and administrators and $500 to part-time teachers.

Vermont, New Mexico, Maryland, and Florida have also given out extra money to certain residents this year. Whether or not that will continue remains to be seen.

What If Youre Still Missing One Or More Payments From Last Year

If youre missing money from one of the previous checks due to an IRS error or outdated information, you can either wait for the issue to be resolved when you file your taxes or you can file a payment trace with the IRS. Before you do that, track your check to make sure its not already on the way.

Note that if you gained a dependent since you last filed taxes, the IRS wouldnt have that information on file. If thats your case, you wont get any money until you file your taxes.

Question: Can the IRS or other creditors take my third stimulus check if I owe back taxes, child support or other debts?

Answer: Your third stimulus check is not subject to reduction or offset to pay child support, federal taxes, state income taxes, debts owed to federal agencies, or unemployment compensation debts.

However, the American Rescue Plan doesnt include additional protections that were included in the legislation authorizing the second round of stimulus checks. For example, second-round stimulus checks werent subject to garnishment by creditors or debt collectors. They couldnt be lost in bankruptcy proceedings, either. The IRS also had to encode direct deposit payments so that banks knew they couldnt be garnished.

Question: Can a dead person get a third stimulus check?

Answer: For the third round of stimulus checks, anyone who died before January 1, 2021, is not eligible to receive a payment. Essentially, theyre treated as if they dont have a Social Security number.

There is an exception for military personnel. If a person who died before 2021 was married and a member of the U.S. military, the surviving spouse can still receive a third stimulus check even if he or she doesnt have a Social Security number.

The extra $1,400 per dependent is also off the table if the parent died before 2021 or, in the case of a joint return, both parents died before then.

Question: Will I receive a notice from the IRS about my payment?
