Third Stimulus Checks: When and How Will You Get $1,400?

Some people may get their checks quickly, yet discover the payment amount is incorrect that could be due to their dependents or changes in income.

The law provides $1,400 per adult and dependent, as long as the household income falls below the income threshold for eligibility. In the current bill, single people whose adjusted gross income was below $75,000 and married couples with income below $150,000 will receive their full payments, as well as their dependents. Payments decline for earnings above that, cutting off entirely for single people earning $80,000 and $160,000 for married couples.

But some people may not get the right amount, especially if they haven’t yet filed their 2020 tax returns, given that the IRS extended the tax deadline until May 17. For instance, if a family had a baby last year but hasn’t yet filed their 2020 returns, the IRS would base their payments on their 2019 returns which wouldn’t include their new baby. In that case, the family would receive $2,800 for themselves, but not the extra $1,400 for their child.

For instance, the most recent batch of checks issued this week include “plus-up” payments for people who received checks based on their 2019 tax returns but who have since filed their 2020 tax returns and are owed more. The agency said such extra payments could reflect a loss of income in 2020, which could entitle the tax filers to more stimulus money, or if they had a child last year.

Who Isn’t Eligible For The Third Stimulus Check

Besides high-income earners, the only other individuals who aren’t eligible for the stimulus check are those without Social Security numbers , those who are claimed as dependents on someone else’s tax return, and possibly those who are incarcerated.

This time, an individual who is married to an immigrant without a Social Security number can get the stimulus check, though the spouse with only an individual taxpayer identification number still will not receive a check.

What about children? Parents should get an extra $1,400 for each child that they claimed as a dependent on their 2020 tax return. This is a change from the first and second stimulus checks, where only children who hadn’t reached age 17 could qualify for the stimulus money.

What about people who don’t pay taxes? There is no requirement that you paid taxes or filed a tax return in 2020. This means that even those people whose only source of income is Social Security retirement or disability benefits, Supplemental Security Income , or veterans benefits are eligible for the $1,400 payment.

Those who receive monthly Social Security benefits, Railroad Retirement benefits, SSI, or veterans benefits should automatically receive the stimulus check whether they filed tax returns or not.

What about people receiving unemployment? Those collecting unemployment benefits are eligible to receive the stimulus payment.

Do I Have To File 2020 Taxes To Get The Third Stimulus Check

No. The Treasury can use 2019 or 2020 tax returns to determine your payment.

It will also send payments to people who don’t file taxes, but who either used the IRS nonfilers tool last year to submit information or receive federal benefits such as Social Security retirement or disability and Supplemental Security Income.

However, if you qualify for more money based on your 2020 income or need to claim additional dependents, you will need to file a 2020 tax return so the IRS can top off your payment.

Will I Get A Third Stimulus Check

One possibility is that the government will lower the eligibility ceiling for stimulus checks. Some individuals and families who received relief funds under the CARES Act last March, and then again in recent weeks, may not qualify for more money.

The $900 billion bill passed in Congress in December provided $600 stimulus checks to those earning up to $75,000, with prorated amounts going to anyone making up to $87,000.

Recent data from the Opportunity Insights Economic Tracker, a nonprofit research group, shows that households earning more than $78,000 are saving their stimulus money rather than spending it. This suggests that lower-income families need the funds to pay their bills while those making more do not.

The analysis also found that it would cost $200 billion to send another round of checks to individuals earning more than $50,000 and to couples bringing in more than $75,000, but that those check recipients would spend just 7% of that amount, or $15 billion.

While there are no formal proposals to limit stimulus-check eligibility, doing so may be one option for cutting costs. If your individual income was more than $50,000 the last time you filed taxes, it’s possible you might not qualify for the next round.

What Type Of Credit Is The Stimulus Payment

The third stimulus payment is actually an advance payment of a refundable credit that will be calculated with your 2021 taxes .

If you made too much money in 2020 to get the full stimulus payment, but you end up making less income in 2021 than you did in prior years, you could get a stimulus payment as a rebate in 2022. Luckily, if you make more money in 2021 than you did in 2020, you will not have to pay back part or all of your stimulus payment in 2022.

Change Of Address Or Bank Account

If you’ve moved since the Covid relief package was passed, it’s possible that the IRS doesn’t have your new information.

As a result, your check may have been mailed to your old address.

Similarly, if you’ve opened a new bank account and the IRS does not have that info, your payment could be delayed.

In that case, a paper check or debit card would be mailed to you.

But if your bank account and address are both new and have not been updated with the IRS, you could be facing a serious delay in receiving your payment.

How Taxes Play A Role In Your Stimulus Payment Amount

Taxes were due May 17. So how will the IRS figure out how much it owes you? It will calculate your total based on the most recent tax filing itâs processed when tabulating the amount of your stimulus check.

If you know your tax return was already processed, the amount of your stimulus check will likely be based on your 2020 adjusted gross income, not on your 2019 AGI. That presents complications if the difference between the two years disqualifies you from getting a third stimulus check.

On the flip side, if the IRS uses your 2019 taxes and youâre owed more money based on your 2020 AGI and dependents, you could get a plus-up payment. If you got more than youâre owed, youâll only need to return it to the IRS in some cases.

When Will The Third Stimulus Check Be Sent

Third stimulus checks: Will we get $1,400 payments in March?

Democrats and Biden want to have the COVID-19 relief plan approved by Sunday, March 14. That’s when extra unemployment assistance and other pandemic aid expires. House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer said the House will vote Tuesday on the bill. So it appears Democrats should make that March 14 deadline.

During the first round of stimulus checks in April 2020, it took about two weeks for the federal government to start distributing the money. It took around one week for the second round of checks, worth $600, in early January. If the IRS is able to keep with previous timelines, Americans could start receiving stimulus checks from late March to early April. For example, if the stimulus package is signed into law by March 14, based on previous relief plans, the first direct deposits may go out the week of March 22.Another possible complicating factor is that this round of stimulus checks will likely be going out while the IRS is dealing with tax returns.

The Senate bill would extend the enhanced unemployment benefits through Sept. 6 at $300 a week. Also, the first $10,200 of benefits would non-taxable. The provision applies to households with incomes under $150,000.

While some $600 second-round stimulus check payments may still be in the mail, the IRS said that it has issued all of them.

How Much Does The Third Stimulus Check Pay

The $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief plan includes a third round of $1,400 stimulus payments, topping off the $600 checks that were , and adding up to $2,000.

Congress passed the coronavirus relief plan with targeted income limits for maximum stimulus payments to individual taxpayers earning under $75,000 and joint filers making up to $150,000. But whereas the first and second rounds of stimulus payments phased out checks on a sliding scale of $5 for every $100 over the income limit, the new plan cuts off high earners at $80,000 for individuals and $160,000 for couples.

While major banks in the U.S. started delivering $1,400 stimulus checks in March, the federal relief payments continue to arrive at millions of households struggling to make ends meet amid the coronavirus-hobbled economy.

The Internal Revenue Service has delivered more than 165 million payments, with a total value of approximately $388 billion, the agency said Wednesday. The latest round includes 1 million payments, with the IRS noting they have an official payment date of May 12. That means the most recent recipients will receive a direct deposit on Wednesday, or soon get a paper check or pre-paid debit card in the mail.

The timing and delivery of checks has been a cause of anxiety for some people, especially for those who receive government benefits such as Social Security and don’t typically file taxes. The IRS prioritized sending checks to people who have already filed their 2019 or 2020 tax returns, since the agency was able to quickly verify eligibility based on income and also determine where to mail or direct deposit the checks.

The agency said it’s sending another 500,000 payments to eligible people who recently filed a tax return but for whom it didn’t previously have information to issue a stimulus check.

Can back taxes or child support be taken out of the checks? The stimulus payments are not taxable and are not subject to garnishment by the government for back taxes or student loan defaults. The same is true for past due child support payments or private debts–for the second and third stimulus checks.

Can my bank take my stimulus check? If your bank account is overdrawn because of overdrafts or outstanding fees, your bank may take part or all of your stimulus check to bring your account even. However, when the second stimulus check came out, many large banks stated that they would bring customers’ bank balances to zero, temporarily, so that customers could access their stimulus checks. This includes Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Citigroup, and JPMorgan Chase.

What You Should Do If Your Income Increased In 2020 Vs 2019

Undoubtedly, a whole separate camp of Americans saw their incomes rise in 2020 versus 2019, meaning they would no longer be considered eligible for a stimulus check if they were to submit their return today.

You could still wait to file your tax return and claim a stimulus check. The IRS wouldnt attempt to recoup that payment, and it also shouldnt open you up to any penalties or fines, according to the current text of the bill. Economic Impact Payments also arent considered taxable income.

But beware: You dont want to risk incurring late fees by waiting so long that you submit your tax return past the April 15 deadline .
