How Are Americans Using Stimulus Checks
The Federal Reserve Bank of New York says that households are spending a smaller percentage of their stimulus checks and saving more. The that households set aside just under 25% of their third-round payments for consumption. This share fell from just over 29% of first-round payments reported in June 2020 and almost 26% of second-round payments reported in January 2021.
The table below is based on all three SCE surveys and breaks down the average percentage of stimulus payments spent, saved and used to pay off debt:
New York Fed SCE Breakdown of Stimulus Check Spending | |
Payment Round | |
37.4% | 33.7% |
The New York Fed also says that households expect to spend an average 13% of the third stimulus check on essential items and an average 8% on non-essential items.
For a comparison, preliminary data collected by the U.S. Census Bureau from shows that the majority of stimulus recipients are almost three times more likely to use checks to pay down debt than add to their savings.
An earlier showed that the majority of recipients who got the first stimulus check spent their payment on household expenses. Adults with incomes between $75,000 and $99,999 told the Census that they would most likely pay off debt or add to their savings. While adults making less than $25,000 said they would use their stimulus to pay for expenses.
For those households that spent their first stimulus checks, the study says:

Stimulus Checks Are Being Sent Out In January Find Out If You Will Get A $1400 Payment
- 18:10 ET, Dec 30 2021
STIMULUS checks are being sent out in January with Americans urged to find out if they are eligible for a $1,400 payment.
The third stimulus checks, officially known as Economic Impact Payments, were sent to Americans who earned less than $75,000 as an individual, or $150,000 for a married couple.
Americans who could see a $1,400 payment in 2022 include parents who welcomed a new baby in 2021.
Third Payments Differed From Previous Economic Impact Payments

The third payments differed from the earlier payments in several respects:
- Income phaseout amounts changed. Payments were reduced for individuals with adjusted gross income of more than $75,000 . The reduced payments end at $80,000 for individuals and $160,000 for married filing jointly. People above these levels did not receive any payment.
- Payment amounts are different. Most families received $1,400 per person, including all dependents claimed on their tax return. Typically, this means a single person with no dependents received $1,400, while married filers with two dependents received $5,600.
- Qualifying dependents expanded. Unlike the first two payments, the third payment was not restricted to children under 17. Eligible individuals received a payment based on all of their qualifying dependents claimed on their return, including older relatives like college students, adults with disabilities, parents and grandparents.

The Us Federal Government Sent Out Three Waves Of Stimulus Payments Since The Start Of The Covid
The US is in the throes of another wave of covid-19 infections with case numbers surpassing all previous peaks. In the past this led to the federal government stepping up to help Americans left struggling in the disruption the pandemic has wrought on livelihoods and household finances. However, this time despite workers out sick or quarantining no new federal stimulus checks look set to be sent out.
In a recent press release the Internal Revenue Service put out its annual report highlighting the efforts of its employees in 2021. One of the accomplishments touted by the agency has been successfully delivering more than $1.5 trillion to people across the nation through Economic Impact Payments, tax refunds and advance Child Tax Credit payments. Here’s a look at the three Economic Impact Payments, better known as stimulus checks.

$1400 Stimulus Payments: Whos Eligible And How Much Will You Receive
Eligible U.S. adults will see $1,400 per each individual in their household, including adult dependents, such as college students.
That breaks away from earlier rounds of Economic Impact Payments, when dependents only qualified for a stimulus check if they were under age 17. The new inclusion means 13.5 million more individuals will receive stimulus payments, according to an analysis of data from the Census Bureau.
Dependents also havent always been up for a check as high as adults payments, with the first round of $1,200 stimulus checks only allocating them $500. The second round, however, sent $600 payments to everyone who qualified.
Yet, eligibility criteria is considerably stricter than different rounds. A good rule of thumb: If you received a full stimulus payment last time , you should receive that full $1,400 amount.
Individuals who make less than $75,000 in their adjusted gross income and married filers who earn a combined $150,000 will be eligible for the full $1,400 or $2,800 payments, respectively. For example, a married couple earning $140,000 jointly with one child and one adult dependent will receive $5,600 $1,400 multiplied by four.
Head of households will have to make less than $112,500 annually to qualify for the full payment.
The IRS and Treasury Department will use your most recently processed tax return on file to determine your stimulus payment eligibility. For most, thats either income based on 2020 or 2019.

Question: Can the IRS or other creditors take my third stimulus check if I owe back taxes, child support or other debts?
Answer: Your third stimulus check is not subject to reduction or offset to pay child support, federal taxes, state income taxes, debts owed to federal agencies, or unemployment compensation debts.
However, the American Rescue Plan doesn’t include additional protections that were included in the legislation authorizing the second round of stimulus checks. For example, second-round stimulus checks weren’t subject to garnishment by creditors or debt collectors. They couldn’t be lost in bankruptcy proceedings, either. The IRS also had to encode direct deposit payments so that banks knew they couldn’t be garnished.
Question: Can a dead person get a third stimulus check?
Answer: For the third round of stimulus checks, anyone who died before January 1, 2021, is not eligible to receive a payment. Essentially, they’re treated as if they don’t have a Social Security number.
There is an exception for military personnel. If a person who died before 2021 was married and a member of the U.S. military, the surviving spouse can still receive a third stimulus check even if he or she doesn’t have a Social Security number.
The extra $1,400 per dependent is also off the table if the parent died before 2021 or, in the case of a joint return, both parents died before then.
Question: Will I receive a notice from the IRS about my payment?

The first batch of payments to Social Security recipientsmore than 19 million payments made to beneficiaries who didnt file 2019 or 2020 tax returns and did not use the non-filers tool last yearwent out on April 7.
Payments were delayed while Social Security and the IRS worked out the details of transferring beneficiary data to the IRS, which is handling payment processing.
If you used the non-filers tool to get a stimulus payment in 2020, your payment may have already been issued.
What To Do If Your Tax Situation Changed In 2020 Vs 2019

Maybe you had a child or saw your income fall in 2020, meaning youre eligible for a higher amount than the IRS right now assumes. Perhaps you changed banks or moved in the last year. If thats you, youll want to submit your 2020 tax return as soon as possible, so the IRS has the most accurate picture of your financial situation.
But its safe to assume that IRS officials are going to have their work cut out for them over the next few weeks. They might not be able to process your return by the time they begin sending out stimulus checks, meaning youll receive less than what you should.
While it wont be as speedy, youll most likely be able to claim any missing stimulus payments when you file your 2021 taxes in 2022 by claiming a Recovery Rebate Credit. And even better, the text of the American Rescue Plan opens up the possibility of additional top-up payments, meaning, in the best of circumstances, you wont have to wait a whole year to claim your check.
Similar to the first and second stimulus check rounds, youll also most likely be able to input your bank account information through the IRSs GetMyPayment tool. Stay tuned for more information from the IRS in the coming weeks on how and when to fill that information out.

Will The Stimulus Money Affect My Eligibility For Disability Benefits
For SSI eligibility purposes, the stimulus check wont count as income to you, and you dont need to report it as income to the Social Security Administration. Plus, its not taxable. In addition, for SSI, the stimulus money wont count as a resource unless you still have all or part of it 12 months after receiving it.
For SSDI eligibility purposes, income and assets dont matter, so the stimulus check will have no effect.
Will There Be More Stimulus Checks In Future
As things currently stand, a fourth federal stimulus round appears to be unlikely.
Currently, Mr Biden’s Build Back Better Agenda does not include stimulus payments.
And in May, White House secretary Jen Psaki told reporters that the stimulus checks were not free and that another round wasnt in Bidens plans.
Along with getting Biden on board, two corporate Democrats Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema would need to get convinced as well.
This is unlikely because the US is no longer in the heights of the pandemic and is dealing with inflation, as there is huge consumer demand that the supply is not meeting.
Stimulus checks serve the purpose of giving taxpayers a financial boost during an economic downturn.
And that isn’t happening at the moment.
But there has been some mounting pressure to do so 50 Democratic members of the House of Representatives wrote a letter suggesting recurring direct checks, also known as universal basic income.
It read: Another one-time round of checks would provide a temporary lifeline, but when that money runs out, families will once again struggle to pay for basic necessities.
“One more check is not enough during this public health and economic crisis.
It was backed by US Representative for New York Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Minnesota’s Ilhan Omar.
Democrats have backed a figure of $2,000, although there aren’t currently any official bills debating a fourth round of checks.
We explain how to track down the latest $1,400 stimulus check.

SOME Americans can claim a $1,400 stimulus check in the new year.
However, there is specific criteria to follow to receive the cash in 2022.
The new payment will go out to people who were eligible for the third round of stimulus checks that went out earlier this year, but haven’t yet received them.
The last lot of checks are due to go out when eligible taxpayers file their 2021 tax return next year.
How To Track Your Stimulus Check Online
With the IRS Get My Payment tool, you can get a daily update on your payment status. The online app can also alert you with a message if there’s a problem with your payment that you may need to address. Another option is to create an online account with the IRS, if you haven’t already.
If you get sent a plus-up payment after your 2020 tax return is processed, the amount of your third payment will no longer show up in the tool, according to the IRS. In that case you will only see the status of your plus-up payment.
If you expect your payment to come in the mail, you can use a free tool from the US Postal Service to track your mailed stimulus payment.

If I Owe Back Child Support Will I Still Get A Payment
Yes. If you or your spouse owes back child support, your stimulus payment cannot be garnished to pay that debt. The same is true if you owe federal or state debts: your stimulus payment cannot be garnished. Your payment wont be levied by the IRS, either.
Although the second and third stimulus payments cant be garnished for unpaid child support, the amounts can be garnished if you dont get money up front and need to claim the credits on your taxes.
