Today, millions of families will receive their Child Tax Credit and breathe a bit easier.

Hillary Clinton
Colorado restaurant owner Stephanie Bonin launched the Change.org petition last year, calling for the recurring stimulus checks. As a measure of how popular this idea is? The petition is currently just shy of having garnered 3 million signatures.
As a practical matter, though, heres where this prospect stands, as we come to the end of the year.
The checks that went out on Monday are, once again, putting as much as $300 in the bank accounts of millions of parents. Less than one month from now, on December 15, this will happen again. Theres also a possibility Democrats will continue the expansion of the child tax credit into 2022. But nobody thinks a fourth stimulus check, at least at the moment, has any real chance of coming to fruition.
If you havent been getting the child tax credit payments, meanwhile, theres good news. If you signed up via the Child Tax Credit Update Portal on the IRS website by Monday? Rather than getting the normal-sized child tax credit in December, yours will be super-sized. It could total as much as $1,800, as a catch-up, to encompass all the child tax credit checks that have gone out this year.
First And Second Stimulus Check
You will need to file a tax return for Tax Year 2020 . The deadline to file your taxes this year was May 17, 2021. The tax filing extension deadline is October 15, 2021.
If you missed the filing deadline, you can still file your tax return to get your first and second stimulus checks. If you dont owe taxes, there is no penalty for filing late. Does This Mean Ill Need To File A Tax Return
The requirement to file a tax return depends on your gross income, which is all income you receive in the form of money, goods, property and services that arent tax-exempt . For 2019, the standard deduction amount for single filers was $12,200.
Your gross income is different from your adjusted gross income, or AGI, which is your gross income minus any eligible adjustments that you may qualify for.
If youre age 65 or older, you should file taxes under the following circumstances:
- Single filer with at least $13,850 in gross income
- Head of household with at least $20,000 in gross income
- Qualifying widow age 65 or older with at least $25,700 in gross income
In the 2019 tax year, the IRS introduced Form 1040-SR, US Tax Return for Seniors. This form is basically the same as Form 1040, but has larger text and some helpful information for older taxpayers.
What If Im Not Required To File Taxes
If you havent filed your taxes for 2019 or 2020 and werent planning to, you can still receive a third stimulus payment if youre eligible.
- If you receive Social Security or Railroad Retirement benefits, youll receive your Economic Impact Payment automatically without providing further information. However, if you have eligible dependents and did not provide this information to the IRS in connection with the first or second stimulus, you will not receive the supplemental $1,400-per-child payment as part of the third stimulus.
- Note that eligibility for supplemental payments for dependents has changed. If you have dependents over the age of 18 who did not qualify for the first or second stimulus, they may still qualify for the third. To claim a supplemental payment for which you qualify under the third stimulus, you will likely need to claim a Recovery Rebate Credit the next time you file federal taxes.

How To Use Irs ‘get My Payment’
The IRS also updated frequently asked questions Saturday on how to use the “Get My Payment” tool, which requires users to enter their full Social Security number or tax ID number, date of birth, street address and ZIP code.
But before you start entering your information hourly, the IRS says the tool updates once per day, usually overnight and that people should not call the IRS. Our phone assistors don’t have information beyond what’s available on IRS.gov.
The tool will show the status of when a payment has been issued and the payment date for direct deposit or mail, according to the frequently asked questions. Some will get a message that says “Payment Status Not Available.”
“If you get this message, either we have not yet processed your payment, or you are not eligible for a payment,” the IRS said. “We will continue to send the 2021 Economic Impact Payment to eligible individuals throughout 2021.”
And others will get a “Need More Information” message when using the tool if the payment was returned to the IRS because the post office was unable to deliver it for another reason.
If your address has changed the IRS says the easiest way to update is to “file your 2020 tax return with your current address, if you havent already done so. Once we receive your current address, we will reissue your payment.”

What Happens If You Didnt Get A Stimulus Check
According to the agency, if you have not received both of your stimulus checks, you can receive the money when you file your 2020 tax return. However, if it doesnt come or if you received less than you are eligible for, you ll need to do some extra work on your tax return by claiming the Recovery Rebate Credit.
Child Tax Credit: July 15 Deposits
Some families received another form of stimulus aid on July 15 when the IRS deposited the first of six monthly cash payments into bank accounts of parents who qualify for the Child Tax Credit . Families on average received $423 in their first CTC payment, according to an analysis of Census data from the left-leaning advocacy group Economic Security Project.
Eligible families will receive up to $1,800 in cash through December, with the money parceled out in equal installments over the six months from July through December. The aid is due to the expanded CTC, which is part of President Joe Biden’s American Rescue Plan.
Families who qualify will receive $300 per month for each child under 6 and $250 for children between 6 to 17 years old. Several families that spoke to CBS MoneyWatch said the extra money would go toward child care, back-to-school supplies and other essentials.
Families may enjoy more of a tax break in coming years, if Mr. Biden’s American Families Plan moves forward. Under that plan, the Child Tax Credit’s expansion would last through 2025, giving families an additional four years of bigger tax breaks for children.

What If I Qualify But Dont Receive My Third Stimulus Payment
If you file your taxes using an online tax-preparation service or software, its possible that your payment will be sent to a temporary bank account that has since been closed. Tax preparers customarily set up such so-called Refund Transfer accounts so they can deduct authorized fees before passing the balance along to the recipient and closing the account.
If your payment is sent to a closed account, the financial institution is required by law to bounce the funds back to the IRS. If this happens , your only recourse may be to claim a Recovery Rebate Credit when you file your 2020 taxes.
My Third Stimulus Payment Was Too Low

Many individuals and families will find that their third stimulus checks are lower than they thought. That could be because people who make over a certain amount have part of the $1,400 payment taken away. For example, single people who make over $75,000 in adjusted gross income will have their second stimulus checks reduced by 28% of the income over $75,000. Married people filing jointly and heads of household will have their payments reduced by a similar amount.
The third stimulus payment is technically based on your 2021 income, but the IRS is using your 2020 tax return to estimate it. If your income goes down in 2021, making you eligible for a payment, or a higher payment, you’ll be able to file a tax return for your 2021 taxes and you’ll receive the stimulus money you didn’t getâit’s called a recovery rebate credit.

How To Track Your Stimulus Check Online
With the IRS Get My Payment tool, you can get a daily update on your payment status. The online app can also alert you with a message if there’s a problem with your payment that you may need to address. Another option is to create an online account with the IRS, if you haven’t already.
If you get sent a plus-up payment after your 2020 tax return is processed, the amount of your third payment will no longer show up in the tool, according to the IRS. In that case you will only see the status of your plus-up payment.
If you expect your payment to come in the mail, you can use a free tool from the US Postal Service to track your mailed stimulus payment.
What Does The Stimulus Check Portal Do
The updated “Get My Payment” tool lets you:
- Check the status of your stimulus payment
- Confirm your payment type and
- Get a projected direct deposit or paper check delivery date .
For first-round stimulus payments, you could also use the portal to enter or change your bank account information to have your payment directly deposited into your account. However, that feature isn’t included in the current tool . The IRS already has bank account information for millions of Americans from recent tax returns, tax payments, the original “Get My Payment” tool, the non-filers tool used last year, other federal agencies that regularly send out benefit payments , and federal records of recent payments to or from the government. So, the tax agency is generally limiting direct deposit payments to bank accounts that they already have on file. As a result, you can’t change your bank information using the “Get My Payment” tool.
If your payment isn’t deposited directly into your bank account, then you’ll get either a paper check or a debit card in the mail . You could also receive a payment by mail if your bank rejected a direct deposit. This could happen because the bank information was incorrect or the bank account on file with the IRS has since been closed.

When And How Will I Get My Stimulus Payment
Direct deposit payments are being made by the IRS first, with paper checks and prepaid cards to follow. Estimated dates for delivery arent yet available, but since the IRS is already busy processing 2020 tax returns, a somewhat slower rollout than with the second stimulus check is possible.
- If youve supplied direct deposit information to the IRS , your Economic Impact Payment will be deposited directly into your bank account on file with the IRS.
- If you havent supplied direct deposit info to the IRS, a paper stimulus check or prepaid EIP card will be mailed to you.
