What Is The Status Of The Second Stimulus Check

Will 2020 Tax Returns Affect How Much I Receive

How to track the status of your stimulus check

In some cases, yes. If based on your 2020 tax returns you would be entitled to a larger payment than calculated based on your 2019 returns, you will be eligible to receive the difference as a tax credit. Of course, this additional payment wont be available until 2020 returns are filed this year.

But if the stimulus payment you are due is lower based on your 2020 income, you get to keep the higher payment that was sent to you based on your 2019 return.

What If I Need Financial Help Now

There are a slate of government programs that can help with unemployment benefits, mortgage relief, student-loan forbearance, small business loans, food and other household expenses, and health insurance. Credit-card companies and banks are also offering financial assistance. Here’s a full list of where to go for help.

Editor’s note: This post has been updated to clarify that you must have either filed a 2019 tax return, registered using the nonfilers tool, or currently collect federal benefits in order to receive the second stimulus check automatically.

Didn’t Get The Full Third Payment Claim The 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit

You may be eligible to claim a 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit on your 2021 federal tax return.

Individuals can view the total amount of their third Economic Impact Payments through their individual Online Account. Through March 2022, we’ll also send Letter 6475 to the address we have on file for you confirming the total amount of your third Economic Impact Payment and any plus-up payments you received for tax year 2021.

You will need this information from your online account or your letter to accurately calculate your 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit when you file your 2021 federal tax return in 2022. For married filing joint individuals, each spouse will need to log into their own online account or review their own letter for their half of the total payment. All amounts must be considered if filing jointly.

Using the total amount of the third payment from your online account or Letter 6475 when preparing a tax return can reduce errors and avoid delays in processing while the IRS corrects the tax return.

Payment Went To The Wrong Account

According to the IRS website, your payment information cannot be changed. If you dont get a payment and you are eligible to receive one, it may be claimed on your 2020 tax return as the Recovery Rebate Credit.

Be aware that some people have reported their second stimulus payment, like their first, went to their tax preparer instead of their personal checking account. If you used a third-party company to help you file your 2019 taxes and get a refund you may want to reach out to them. Be aware, however customer support phonelines currently have a long wait.

President Trump Describes Nba Players Coaches Who Criticize Him: ‘very Nasty And Frankly Very Dumb’

Is There A Second Stimulus Check Coming? Payment Status

An unknown number of people said they still have not received the first round of checks months later after the U.S. Treasury Department and Internal Revenue Service said in June that 159 million payments had been issued.

Now as Congressional talks around the second stimulus package resume, White House officials stressed Monday that Trump still supports the checks.

The president would love to see the direct payments to Americans. The president would love to see the school funding, said White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany in her press briefing on Monday. There are several items that wed like to see happen. The more relief for the American people and those in need, in particular the better.

While another stimulus could help give retailers a short-term bounce, recent data shows that many consumers are using the checks to get rid of the debt.

In a Civic Science survey of more than 2,100 adults, 33% of the respondents said they would use new checks to pay down debt and bills, compared with 29% in March.

OVERVIEW

As a part of the Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act recently signed into law, the IRS announced that they have begun issuing a second round of stimulus payments to eligible tax filers. As a part of the Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act recently signed into law, the IRS announced that they have begun issuing a second round of stimulus payments to eligible tax filers.

Here are answers to some of the top questions you may have about the second stimulus checks:

If you have an adjusted gross income of up to $75,000 , you could be eligible for the full amount of the recovery rebate $600 for eligible individuals, $1,200 for joint taxpayers, and an additional $600 for each dependent child under 17.

*Note, adjusted gross income is your gross income like wages, salaries, or interest minus adjustments for eligible deductions like student loan interest or your IRA deduction. Your AGI can be found on line 8b of your 2019 Form 1040.

The same eligibility rules apply to the second stimulus payment as the first one. You must have a valid Social Security number, and you cant have been claimed as a dependent on someone elses 2019 tax return.

Can You Use The Portal If You Didn’t File A Tax Return

You couldn’t use the “Get My Payment” tool to track the status of your first stimulus check if you didn’t file a 2018 or 2019 federal income tax return. However, there was another online tool that non-filers could use to give the IRS with the information it needed to process a payment.

The non-filers tool wasn’t used for second stimulus checks, though. Instead, if you didn’t file a 2019 tax return, and you didn’t use the non-filers tool to get your first-round payment, then you have to wait to claim your second stimulus check money as a Recovery Rebate credit on your 2020 return.

The IRS is not using the non-filers tool for third-round stimulus checks, either. As a result, if you don’t file a 2019 or 2020 tax return, you’ll have to claim any money you’re owed as a Recovery Rebate credit on your 2021 return, which you won’t file until next year. However, you can avoid having to wait until next year by filing a 2020 return before the May 17, 2021, deadline.

On 13 July, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a law that will allow for the sending of the second round of direct payments. Those who received a check during the first round are not eligible for a second.

However, taxpayers in the care of children who meet the income requirements will receive an additional $500 payment.

What About American Expats

Second stimulus check problems: Payments delayed, going to wrong bank account

US citizens living abroad who have a valid Social Security number are eligible for stimulus checks. But many expats had trouble obtaining their payments during the first round.

Business Insider spoke with Nathalie Goldstein, CEO and cofounder of My Expat Taxes, about how expats can make the process easier this time around.

If you’re still waiting on your first stimulus check, Goldstein suggested electronically filing your 2020 tax return as soon as possible. You’ll be able to claim the first and second payments on Form 1040 . To get your money quickly, include direct-deposit information for a US bank account. The IRS will not send payments to non-US banks.

It’s unclear at this time whether the IRS will reopen its online tool to collect direct-deposit information if you don’t include it on your tax return. You’ll get a paper check if the IRS doesn’t have your bank details.

Goldstein said any expat who didn’t qualify for the first stimulus payment because their income was too high should consider claiming the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion on their 2020 taxes to lower their adjusted gross income and meet the income limits.

Lastly, expats who haven’t filed US taxes in the last three years can catch up on filing and claim both stimulus payments through the IRS’ streamlining procedure.

Theres Still Time To Get Payments

If you havent yet filed your tax return, you still have time to file to get your missed 2021 stimulus payments.

Visit ChildTaxCredit.gov for details.

The IRS has issued all first, second and third Economic Impact Payments. You can no longer use the Get My Payment application to check your payment status.

Most eligible people already received their Economic Impact Payments. However, people who are missing stimulus payments should review the information below to determine their eligibility to claim a Recovery Rebate Credit for tax year 2020 or 2021.

Securely access your IRS online account to view the total of your first, second and third Economic Impact Payment amounts under the Tax Records page.

Do I Need To Apply To Get My Second Stimulus Check

You do not need to apply to get the second stimulus check. However, you may need to have filed your 2018 or 2019 taxes or have a 2019 Form SSA-1099 or Form RRB-1099. The IRS will refer to the Social Security Administration, Railroad Retirement Board or Department of Veterans Affairs to get the information they need.

Your Financial Situation Changed From 2019 To 2020

Any changes to your financial situation in 2020 may affect your payment amount and receipt.

For most people, this will result from job or income loss due to the pandemic. If your income was higher than the phaseout thresholds in 2019, but your hours were cut or you only worked for part of 2020, you can claim the stimulus money you didnt receive using the Recovery Rebate Credit on your 2020 tax return.

If you had a baby in 2020, got married or divorced, you were previously claimed as a dependent, or you have a child who aged out of being claimed as a dependent, you may receive more after claiming the credit as well.

When youre ready to file 2020 federal taxes, an accountant or tax filing service may be helpful to clarify your exact eligibility. If you file on your own, your Form 1040 will include a Recovery Rebate Credit worksheet to help you determine the total amount youre eligible for.

How Will I Get My Stimulus Check

What to expect in the Second Stimulus Check?

Most people will receive the second stimulus check the same way they got the first either by direct deposit, paper check, or debit card.

However, there are a few exceptions:

  • You filed taxes between the first and second round of stimulus. The second stimulus checks are being sent automatically to qualifying people who filed 2019 tax returns, and will be delivered to the bank account or mailing address on that return, not the 2018 return used to determine your first payment.
  • You filed taxes with an online tax prep service. Anyone who filed their 2019 tax return with H& R Block and opted to use part of their refund to pay their preparation fee could see an unfamiliar account number reflected on the “Get My Payment” tool, according to H& R Block. Simply check that account number against the refund section of your tax return to see if it matches, and you’ll get the money the same way you received your refund.
  • You received a debit card for your first stimulus check. About 4 million Americans received their payments via prepaid debit card during the first round of stimulus, but that doesn’t guarantee they’ll receive another for the second round, the IRS says. The agency is issuing about 8 million new debit cards this time around.

How Were The Second Batch Of Payments Sent

The second batch of aid includes about 17 million direct deposit payments, with a total value of more than $38 billion. These payments began processing last Friday, the IRS said. Some Americans may have seen the direct deposit payments as pending or as provisional payments in their accounts before Wednesdays official payment date, the agency added.

The Treasury Department has also mailed nearly 15 million paper checks totaling $34 billion to Americans who dont receive the money by direct deposit, the IRS said. About 5 million prepaid debit cards totaling $11 billion were also sent out.

Paper checks and debit cards began processing last Friday and will continue to be sent by mail over the next few weeks, according to the IRS.

One Other Option: You Can Ask The Irs To Track Down Your Stimulus Payment

If you think the IRS did send you a stimulus payment and they money didnt show up, there is one other option. You can ask the IRS to conduct a payment trace to see if it can track down your payment. Its a last resort, and the IRS has lots of read this before you ask for a Payment Trace information to pass along. The IRS says:

If Get My Payment or your Notice 1444 or 1444-B shows your payment was issued as a direct deposit more than five days after the payment date, your first step is to check with your bank and make sure they didnt receive a deposit. Do not check with your bank prior to five days because they may not have any information.

You should only request a payment trace to track your payment if you received Notice 1444 or Notice 1444-B or if “Get My Payment” shows your payment was issued and you have not received it within the timeframes below. IRS assistors cannot initiate a payment trace unless it has been:

  • 5 days since the deposit date and the bank says it hasnt received the payment
  • 4 weeks since the payment was mailed by check to a standard address for the first EIP after February 24, 2021 for the second EIP
  • 6 weeks since the payment was mailed, and you have a forwarding address on file with the local post office for the first EIP March 10, 2021 for the second EIP
  • 9 weeks since the payment was mailed, and you have a foreign address for the first EIP March 31, 2021 for the second EIP

Can I Switch How I Get My Stimulus Check

If you received direct deposit the first time, the IRS will use your data that’s already in the system to get you the second stimulus check. If the bank account listed is closed or inactive, you’ll receive the payment in the mail. And to prevent fraud, the IRS won’t let you change the direct deposit information for a stimulus payment already on file.

During the first round of stimulus checks, you could use the Get My Payment application to provide the IRS with your bank information up until May 13 to ensure you’d get the money via direct deposit. If you received a paper check last time, the IRS hasn’t indicated whether you can add your bank account information this time, or if there is a deadline to do so, but they only have until Jan. 15 to issue the payments, according to the legislation.

If you recently moved, you should provide the IRS with your new address via a Form 8822, or in writing.

Will My 2020 Tax Return Affect My Payment Amount

Fourth stimulus check may be on the way

In some cases, yes. If youâre entitled to a larger payment based on your 2020 tax return compared to your 2019 return, you will be eligible to receive the difference as a tax credit. If you lost your job or saw your income drop this year during the pandemic, this situation may apply to you. But you wonât see any additional funds via a tax credit until 2020 returns are filed this spring.

If the stimulus payment you are due is lower based on your 2020 income, you get to keep the higher payment that was sent to you based on your 2019 return.

Will You Get A Paper Check Or A Debit Card

If you are eligible for the second round of stimulus payments and you did not get a direct deposit by early January, chances are your payment was supposed to arrive by either a paper check or a debit card. If you got a paper check for your first stimulus payment last year, you might still get a debit card this time. And some people who got a debit card last time may receive a check now.

IRS and Treasury urge eligible people who dont receive a direct deposit to watch their mail carefully during this period for a check or an Economic Impact Payment card, which is sponsored by the Treasury Departments Bureau of the Fiscal Service and is issued by Treasurys financial agent, MetaBank®, N.A, the IRS explained. The Economic Impact Payment Card will be sent in a white envelope that prominently displays the U.S. Department of the Treasury seal. It has the Visa name on the front of the Card and the issuing bank, MetaBank®, N.A. on the back of the card. Information included with the card will explain that this is your Economic Impact Payment.

More information about the debit cards is available at EIPcard.com.
