How To Opt Out Of Monthly Child Tax Credit
If you dont want these advance payments, youll have to go through a few steps to opt out. But its pretty simple really. The IRS set up a Child Tax Credit Update Portal for you to opt out and make any changes.
Dont worryeven though the first payment has already gone out, its not too late to opt out of the advance Child Tax Credit payment. Actually, you have the chance to opt out each month. Really! You just have to do it at least three days before the first Thursday of the month.8 So if you want to opt out in September, make sure to opt out by August 30, just to be safe.
Pro tip: If youre married and filing jointly, then both you and your spouse need to opt out of the Child Tax Credit.
When Could The Stimulus Payments Start
Following approval of the bill on March 11th, millions of Americans will start seeing the third stimulus payments by mid-to-late March 2021 per the estimated IRS payment schedule and official Biden administration guidance. Comments below confirm these are going out now. You can also check the IRS Get May Payment tool for the latest status of your payment. See payment FAQs from the second round of payments, which will also apply for the most part this time around.
Due to the fact that payments are going out in the middle of tax season it may be very hard to get a hold of someone in the IRS to help with payment issues and you will likely have to wait until after April 15th to follow up on issues.
When Should I Get My Payment
The IRS was given hard and fast deadlines to send the two rounds of Economic Impact Payments out to American families. The first round of payments had to be sent out by December 31, 2020. The second round had to be sent out by January 15, 2021.
What this means: If you have not received the first or second round of payments yet, then you will not be getting them in advance. The good news is that you can still do something to get these payments. Read below.

When You’ll Receive Your Payment
The final date to qualify has already passed for filers other than those with pending ITINs. If you have already filed, you don’t have to do anything.
If you have not received a payment by now, you will most likely receive a paper check. In addition, if you did not receive a refund with your tax return or owed money at the time of filing, you will receive a paper check.
Payments will go out based on the last 3 digits of the ZIP code on your 2020 tax return. Some payments may need extra time to process for accuracy and completeness. If your tax return is processed during or after the date of your scheduled ZIP code payment, allow up to 60 days after your return has processed. Please allow up to three weeks to receive the paper checks once they are mailed out.

We Will Likely Learn The Wrong Lessons From The Stimulus

The lessons we draw from the response to the COVID-19 recession are important, because theyll almost certainly shape how we respond to the next economic downturn. In the wake of the Great Recession, policymakers shot too low. Now, they appear to have shot too high. If this were the story of Goldilocks, wed be poised to get things just right next time but politics is not a fairy tale, and its very possible that well overcorrect whenever another recession hits.
In many ways, were still figuring out what the lessons are as the pandemic still isnt over. And its, of course, hard to disentangle what could have happened had the governments response not been so aggressive. One clear lesson of the COVID-19 pandemic, though, is that Americas social safety net wasnt prepared to deal with a crisis of this magnitude, which is a big part of the reason why the response had to be so massive.
Our social safety net wasnt ready to catch everyone who needed it, so it was very difficult to figure out who really needed relief and when the tap should be turned off, according to Sinclair. Rickety state unemployment insurance systems couldnt be recalibrated to replace peoples incomes, so many people ended up being paid much more after they lost their jobs. It wasnt easy to target direct payments to people in specific income brackets, so the payments went out to some families who didnt need them.

Why You Did Not Qualify For A Stimulus Check

- You CANNOT be claimed as a dependent on someone elses return. This includes as a child child, student or older dependent.

- You filed Form 1040-NR or Form 1040NR-EZ, Form 1040-PR or Form 1040-SS for 2019. These are quick filing forms, but you need a standard filing
How Much Stimulus Money Can I Expect
You could receive up to $1,400 per qualifying person, but its important to remember that the amount you get will depend on several factors:
- Your tax filing status
- $120,000 for head of household filers
- $160,000 for married couples filing jointly
If you earn more than these upper limits, you wont get any stimulus money this time.

Indiana: $125 Rebate Payments
Like Georgia, Indiana found itself with a healthy budget surplus at the end of 2021. In Dec. 2021, Gov. Eric Holcomb announced that Indiana taxpayers will get a $125 one-time tax refund after they file their 2021 taxes.
Theres no income requirement. Residents must have filed a state tax return for the year 2020 by Jan. 3, 2022, as well as a 2021 Indiana tax return by April 18, 2022, to be eligible. Payments started in May and are expected to continue through mid-summer, according to a state information page.
Taxpayers who file jointly will receive a single deposit of $250.
Most taxpayers will receive their additional refund by direct deposit. If you changed banks or dont have direct deposit information on file, youll receive a paper check in late summer.
For more information, visit the state Department of Revenue website. More information will be added for taxpayers who dont receive their payment by Sept. 1.
In June, Holcomb announced a plan to send additional payments of about $225 to taxpayers, but it hasnt yet been approved by the state legislature.
When Will A Second Stimulus Check Be Issued
The government began sending direct deposit payments on December 28, 2020. Paper checks were sent out starting on December 30, 2020.
Payments are automatically sent to:
- Eligible individuals who filed a 2019 tax return.
- Social Security recipients, including Social Security Disability Insurance , railroad retirees, and Supplemental Security and Veteran Affairs beneficiaries.
- Individuals who successfully registered for the first stimulus check online using the IRS Non-Filers tool or who submitted a simplified tax return that has been processed by the IRS
There is no action that you have to take to get your second stimulus check. People who provided their banking information with the IRS shouldve received their stimulus checks by direct deposit. Social Security and Veterans Affairs beneficiaries who received the first payment via Direct Express shouldve received the second payment the same way.
The IRS sent paper checks or prepaid debit cards to people who did not provide their banking information. Mailed payments may be delivered in a different format than the first stimulus check.
All second stimulus checks were issued by January 15, 2021. If you didnt get a second stimulus check by then , you can claim your second stimulus check as the Recovery Rebate Tax Credit on your 2020 tax return or use GetCTC.org if you dont have a filing requirement.

A Fourth Stimulus Check In 2022 To Deal With Inflation Pressures
There has plenty of talk of a fourth stimulus check in 2022, originally as a relief payment in Bidens build Back Better Bill and now as a way to offset higher costs many consumers are seeing due to record inflation.
However progress on a 4th stimulus check has stalled in Congress due to lack of agreement among Democrats and Republicans and what they can sell to their constituents ahead of the upcoming mid-term elections.
A 2022 Gas Stimulus?
With rising gas prices, many states are providing gas tax holidays which save drivers a few cents at the pump. Some states and even Congress are also considering a 2022 gas relief stimulus check which will pay families up to $400 p/month through 2022.
With the economy rebounding strongly, higher inflation and unemployment claims falling, it was hard for most Democrats in Congress to justify spending billions of dollars on even more stimulus payments.
Some states like California however, are making state specific stimulus payments to provide inflation relief for lower income workers which may be replicated in other states.
There is also the expanded monthly Child Tax Credit stimulus payment for families who have qualifying dependents. While this is not technically a fourth dependent stimulus and rather more of an advanced tax credit it will act like a stimulus payment because it is being paid directly by the IRS to nearly 70 million dependents and their families. This has provisions for another 12 month extension under the BBB.

Latest Stimulus Update: Why Are States Giving Out A Fourth Stimulus Check
It all started back when the American Rescue Plan rolled out. States were given $195 billion to help fund their own local economic recovery at the state level.1 But they dont have forever to spend this moneystates have to figure out what to use it on by the end of 2024, and then they have until the end of 2026 to spend all that cash.2 That might sound like forever, but the clock is ticking here.
Some states have given out their own version of a stimulus check to everyone, and others are targeting it at specific groups like teachers. And other states? Well, they havent spent any of it yet.
Some states like Colorado, Maryland and New Mexico are giving stimulus checks to people who make less than a certain amount of money or who were on unemployment. So far, California is the only state to give out a broader-sweeping stimulus check.3 Other states like Florida, Georgia, Michigan, Tennessee and Texas are putting the money toward $1,000 bonuses for teachers.
What About People With Itins
You still need a work-authorizing Social Security Number to be eligible for this stimulus. However, there are important changes since the first round of stimulus checks.
- In the first stimulus rollout, any non-SSN holder on a joint return made everyone on that return ineligible. Big change: The new rounds of stimulus has corrected this problem. If you filed a joint return with a non-SSN holder, you are still eligible for the stimulus. See the below hypotheticals.
- Situation: A single tax filer has an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number but no Social Security number .
- This person is ineligible for the stimulus.
