The Deadline For 2021 Plus Up Payments Is Soon

Extra stimulus checks: What are plus-up payments and who is eligible?

The deadline for plus up payments created by legislatures is Dec. 31, 2021.

If you think you might qualify, you need to get your 2020 tax return filed as soon as possible.

Payments are normally issued within two weeks of your return being filed.

If you file it now, you wont see a plus up payment before the year ends, but youll get the payment if you make the deadline.

Who Will Get A Plus

Some taxpayers will be entitled to plus-up payments when they file their 2020 tax return if their income in 2020 was lower than in 2019, allowing them to fall into the eligibility thresholds, says Cassandra Kirby, Partner, chief operating officer.

Lets imagine a married couple with one child earned $165,000 in adjusted gross income in 2019, and they were not eligible for any share of the third payment since their income was over $160,000. They had another child in 2020, and their adjusted gross income fell from $165,000 to $155,000, she explains.

They would fall under the $150,000 to $160,000 level with an additional dependent in this situation, she claims and would be eligible for $2,800 in stimulus money.

Those who have gotten their booster shots on or after December 21 at an eligible vaccine site qualify for the payment.

You must get your third vaccine dose via a New York City-operated vaccine site or a SOMOS location that partners with the city to get the $100 reward.

California, for instance, is continuing to send out stimulus payments as part of its Golden State Stimulus II program.

It is estimated that a total of nine million Californians will be getting checks before the end of the year.

Currently, the state is sending out payments to the zip codes 720-927 and 928-999.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Did your finances change significantly between 2020 and 2021, or did you have a new child in 2020 who wasnt claimed on your 2019 tax return? If one of these scenarios sounds familiar, you may be one of the many Americans who are due a plus-up Economic Impact Payment .

The Internal Revenue Service said last week that another batch of stimulus checks will go out this week as part of the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan.

In this batch are what the IRS has dubbed plus-up payments, which are the first of ongoing supplemental payments for people who earlier in March received payments based on their 2019 tax returns, but are eligible for a new or larger payment based on their recently processed 2020 tax returns.

WHOS ELGIBILE?

After assessing tax information, the IRS will determine who gets the plus-up payments.

Reasons you may qualify include if you filed a 2020 tax return and are due a larger stimulus payment because your income dropped in 2020, according to the IRS.

Another reason you may be eligible for an additional EIP is if there is a new chid or dependent listed in the 2020 tax return who wasnt on the 2019 return, said the IRS on its website. This can affect divorced families who alternate years of claiming their child dependents on their taxes.

When Will I Get My Tax Refund

Stimulus checks: When plus

Filing your tax returns now, rather than waiting for the mad scramble ahead of May 17, could also shorten your wait time for a tax refund if you’re owed one. The closer to the deadline you file, the longer it’s likely to take for the IRS to process your return and send your refund, says Kelley Long, CPA and consumer financial education advocate for the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. It can take anywhere between a week and up to three to four weeks, she adds. Most refunds will be issued in less than 21 days, according to TurboTax. You use the “Where’s My Refund” tool from the IRS to track it 24 hours after you file a return electronically.

Something taxpayers don’t seem to be aware of is that just because you file your taxes ahead of the May 17 deadline doesn’t mean you have to pay any balance due to the government right when you file, Long adds. If you owe Uncle Sam money but need the extra month to get it together, that’s fine but you won’t know exactly what you owe until you file.

These are the “plus-up” payments, which are part of the American Rescue Act, signed into law by President Joe Biden in March.

The plus-up payments are available to those who earned less than they did versus 2019.

For example, if something changed on your 2020 tax return – like you made less money or added a dependent – you may be eligible for the plus-up payments.

Moreover, to be eligible for the full $1,400 stimulus check, your income must not exceed $75,000, or $150,000 for couples.

Beyond this date, the IRS will not be issuing plus-up payments.

Who’s Eligible For Additional Checks

When the IRS acted quickly to send out the third round of stimulus checks, it relied on information from the most recent tax returns that were filed. For many people, that was their 2019 tax return. Now that more individuals and families have submitted their 2020 tax returns, they may be owed more money, as recently filed tax returns may reflect life changes.

The IRS is sending out additional checks to get people the money they are owed — what it calls “plus-up” payments. You may be wondering if you should expect another check from the IRS.

Here’s a look at who may be eligible for a “plus-up” stimulus check payment:

  • People with income changes: If the income listed on your 2020 tax return is different than what was listed on your 2019 tax return, you may be eligible for another check. For example, someone may have had a 2019 income that was too high to receive the most recent round of checks, but their 2020 income is lower and now qualifies.
  • People who had a child or added a dependant: If the child or dependant wasn’t listed on your 2019 tax return but now is listed on your 2020 tax return, you may be eligible for another check. Many families had a child after filing their 2019 tax returns.
  • If either of these situations applies to you, you’ll want to keep an eye out for your “plus-up” check. These payments are already starting to be sent out.

How To Apply For Stimulus Check ‘plus

Plus-up stimulus check payments: How they work and who is eligible
    • Claim a correction on the 2020 tax return through the Recovery Rebate Credit. You can find that on Line 30 of Form 1040 for the first two stimulus payments. Any money youre owed will then be added to your tax refund.
    • If youve already had your third stimulus check, but situational changes on your 2020 tax return mean you should be eligible for more, the IRS will automatically adjust your payment after you file your taxes. Youll then receive the additional plus-up check with everything else you qualify for.

People who qualify for a plus-up payment include those who earned a lot less in 2020 than 2019, couples who married in 2020, taxpayers who have had kids and can claim extra dependents, and non-tax filers who also have newly eligible dependents.

But all of this hinges on you submitting a tax return for 2020. While some people, for instance those in low-income households, wouldnt normally have to do this, the IRS wont be sending out any plus-up checks if you dont.

The IRS has also warned that getting an adjustment on your tax return could be complicated by dependents, particularly since teen dependents over 17 werent eligible for the first two checks. So, if you received the extra $500 or $600 as part of the first two stimulus payments, but your child was already 17 on January 1 2020, you won’t have been eligible for those first payments and won’t therefore be entitled to an adjustment.

Another 850,000 stimulus payments, calculated at almost $1.6 billion, went to eligible stimulus check recipients for whom the IRS didnt have the necessary information to issue a payment but recently filed a tax return.

There were 7000,000 plus-up payments worth $1.2 billion that went out to taxpayers who either received a partial payment or no payment because of their 2019 tax information, but became eligible for more money in this years round of payments after filing their 2020 tax returns.

Finally, 72,000 payments went out to Social Security beneficiaries who didnt file a tax return in 2019 or 2020 and didnt use the IRS non-filers tool.

These plus-up payments could include a situation where a persons income dropped in 2020 compared to 2019, or a person had a new child or dependent on their 2020 tax return, and other situations, the IRS said in a statement announcing the payments.

Stimulus check update: How do I get a plus

If you are a taxpayer in the USA whose income was lower in 2020 than it was in 2019, then you are eligible to receive what is being referred to as a plus-up payment.

This also applies to anyone who claimed an elderly or disabled dependent when they handed in their taxes in 2020, as well as elder or disabled relatives or college students who are under the care of individuals.

The deadline to submit your 2020 tax return and therefore become eligible to receive the plus-up payment is December 31, 2021, so it is better to act sooner rather than later.

In order to get the payment before the end of 2021, you should submit that tax return with some time to spare, so that it can be processed and so that the payment can be sent your way.

About 500,000 “plus-up” payments have been made via direct deposit, while the rest were via checks.

Cassandra Kirby, a senior executive at wealth advisor Braun-Bostich & Associates in Pittsburgh, said: “Let’s say a married couple with one child had adjusted gross income of $165,000 in 2019, and because their income was more than $160,000, they are not eligible for any portion of the third payment.

“However, in 2020, they had another child, and their adjusted gross income dropped from $165,000 to $155,000.”

That’s because they would fall within the $150,000 to $160,000 threshold with an additional dependent and would be eligible for $2,800 in stimulus money.

What If You Never Get Your Third Stimulus Payment Or If Any Money Is Missing

If you’re eligible to receive a third stimulus check, but yours never arrives by direct deposit, paper check, EIP card or Direct Express card , you’ll likely have to take an additional step to claim that money. This happened to millions of people during the first and second round of payments for several reasons, including IRS errors, out-of-date banking information or addresses and nonfilers not taking an extra step to get their information to the IRS.

Much like with the first and second checks, you’ll likely be able to claim any missing money from the third check owed to you or your dependents during tax season next year, 2022. However, the IRS has yet to say if there will be an opportunity to claim missing money in 2021 instead. The best thing to do right now to make sure your third check does arrive is to file your tax return as soon as possible, even if you don’t usually have to file one.

How Much Money Could You Expect

It depends on the differences between your 2019 and 2020 taxes and which one the IRS used to calculate your third payment. For each new dependent you claimed for the first time in 2020, they could count toward more money. And dependents of any age count, including 17-year-olds and adult dependents. And if you earned less in 2020 than you did in 2019, you might also qualify for a plus-up payment, again, depending on which tax year the IRS had on hand when it figured your amount.

Stimulus Check Latest: Will You Be Receiving A Plus-Up Payment?

If youve already gotten your third stimulus checkofficially known as an Economic Impact Paymentyou should be aware you may be receiving an additional payment as well. But first, its important to state that everyone shouldnt be getting excited they may revive a fourth stimulus check. So far lawmakers have only approved three stimulus paymentsthough a number of Democratic Senators want to send more on a regular basis.

So whats with this fourth stimulus check some people may be getting? Officially, the Internal Revenue Service is it a plus up payment. People who will get this plus up payment include those who have already gotten a third stimulus check, but the amount of the check was based on their 2019 income or personal situation and not on their 2020 income or personal situation. The IRS realizes that some Americans may have had a change in circumstances from 2019 to 2020 and so may be eligible for a bigger payment than they received with their third check. At the time the third stimulus checks went out last month, the IRS was not aware of those changes because many people hadnt submitted their 2020 tax returns yet.

Here are some of the situations where people could have received a smaller third stimulus check than they should have:

    • If they made less income in 2020 than they did in 2019
    • If they had a new dependentsuch as having a new child in 2020
