To ensure you receive the stimulus payment by direct deposit, file your 2020 tax return and choose direct deposit for your refund delivery method. If youve received your refund by direct deposit in prior years, filing your 2020 return now gives you the opportunity to verify your bank account information .

When the second stimulus checks were delivered, an IRS error caused some payments to be returned. This issue has been resolved and will not impact how your third stimulus is delivered.

Stimulus Check Update: Payments Are Still Going Out

A third stimulus check is included in the $1.9 trillion stimulus bill, called the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021. President Joe Biden signed the legislation into law in early March, approving stimulus checks for millions of eligible Americans. Many people have received theirs already, but some payments are still going out.

So you might want to know the timeline or stimulus check date, and how to use a third stimulus check calculator to find your stimulus check amount, since the income limits have changed compared to previous checks.

The third stimulus check amount is $1,400, which, when coupled with the previous $600 check from December, would get $2,000 to millions of Americans. The third stimulus check eligibility guidelines are more generous to dependents than they were for the first and second checks, but less generous in terms of income limits.

People who make up to $75,000 a year, according to their most recent tax returns, will still qualify for the entire payment. Couples filing jointly will get the full payment if they have a joint total income of $150,000 or less.

Above that limit, the amount of money distributed decreases rapidly, and individuals who earn more than $80,000 per year or $160,000 per year as joint filers will get nothing.

Here’s everything else we know about the third stimulus check.

Fourth Stimulus Check Update: Who Will Get Third And Final Payment

Believe it or not, some Americans still have not received the funds from the third stimulus check in 2021. Now, if they were eligible and still havent received the payment, they are looking at their last chance to possibly access the money they are owed.

The third check, which was the only one passed during the Biden Administration and was worth $1,400, was dispersed to most Americans in March of last year, but some who were eligible for it but didnt receive it have been left waiting for their chance to receive the money. Now, if they file their taxes by the April 18 deadline, they could receive a credit for the amountbut it will be the last chance to do so.

The IRS has made it clear that in order to get a Recovery Rebate Credit, an individual will need to file a 2021 tax return, even if they dont usually file one, according to CNN.

However, after those who are eligible for those payments receive them, it will be the last payment received at the federal level. Some states are still rolling out some checks through their budgets to help their citizens combat inflation, which has led to rising prices both on food and gas, but the federal government has seemingly signaled that it is done providing stimulus checks, even in the face of record inflation that is causing stress to many Americans.

When Do They Vote On The Third Stimulus Check

The House of Representatives passed the American Rescue Plan Saturday morning by a 219-212 vote, hours after going through the House Rules Committee. The bill will now be sent over to the Senate for consideration, but the timeline for passage there remains in some question.

The legislation provides a third stimulus check that amounts to $1,400 for a single taxpayer, or $2,800 for a married couple that files jointly, plus $1,400 per dependent. Individuals earning up to $75,000 would get the full amount as would married couples with incomes up to $150,000.

The size of the check would shrink for those making slightly more with a hard cut-off at $100,000 for individuals and $200,000 for married couples.

Some Republicans want to cut the size of the rebate as well as the pool of Americans eligible for it, but Biden has insisted on $1,400 checks, saying thats what the American people were promised. The new round of checks will cost the government an estimated $422 billion.

When Could The Stimulus Payments Start

Third stimulus check: GOP plan starts to phase out at $40,000 income

Following approval of the bill on March 11th, millions of Americans will start seeing the third stimulus payments by mid-to-late March 2021 per the estimated IRS payment schedule and official Biden administration guidance. Comments below confirm these are going out now. You can also check the IRS Get May Payment tool for the latest status of your payment. See payment FAQs from the second round of payments, which will also apply for the most part this time around.

Due to the fact that payments are going out in the middle of tax season it may be very hard to get a hold of someone in the IRS to help with payment issues and you will likely have to wait until after April 15th to follow up on issues.

  • A single taxpayer who made more than $80,000 in 2020 but less than that in 2021, an Economic Impact Payment based on their 2021 income when they file in 2022. The same is true for a married couple who makes less than $160,000 in 2021.
  • $123 billion toward COVID treatment, which includes money for testing and vaccinations

Calculating The Amount Of Your Third Stimulus Check

Every eligible American will receive a $1,400 third stimulus check “base amount” . The IRS will then tack on an additional $1,400 for each dependent in your family .

Unfortunately, though, not all people will receive the full amount. As with the first two stimulus payments, third-round stimulus checks will be reduced potentially to zero for people reporting an adjusted gross income above a certain amount on their latest tax return. If you filed your most recent tax return as a single filer, your third stimulus check will be phased-out if your AGI is $75,000 or more. That threshold jumps to $112,500 for head-of-household filers, and to $150,000 for married couples filing a joint return. Third-round stimulus checks will be completely phased out for single filers with an AGI above $80,000, head-of-household filers with an AGI over $120,000, and joint filers with an AGI exceeding $160,000.

You can use our handy Third Stimulus Check Calculator to get a customized estimated payment amount. All you have to do is answer three easy questions.

Why Your Stimulus Check Could Shrink

The topline $1,400 number that’s drawn so much attention won’t necessarily be what people receive. The actual amount could change based on income restrictions, the number of dependents and other factors.

The previous two stimulus checks phased out for individuals with an adjusted gross income over $75,000 per year and married couples with an AGI over $150,000. For every dollar of income over the threshold, the previous two stimulus payments decreased by five percent. So the $1,200 payment from the CARES Act shrank to $0 for incomes over $99,000 , and the $600 from the second stimulus shrank to $0 for incomes over $87,000 .

This stimulus package phases out checks more quickly. So while the threshold remains at $75,000 , those earning $80,000 or more will receive nothing. If the phase out progresses at a constant rate — in this case, 32 percent — that would mean people would receive $.32 less for every $1 they earned over the limit.

Biden agrees to phase out checks faster, per Dem source:

Erica Werner

The idea behind targeting stimulus checks to reach lower-income people is to better ensure that the money gets spent in the broader economy rather than saved. According to a survey from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, the average percentage of the first stimulus payment that a household spent on essentials decreased as income increased. The average percentage of the first stimulus payment that a household saved increased as income increased.
