Covid Aid Could Lift 7m Out Of Poverty

The third round of Economic Impact Payments from Bidens American Rescue Plan could reduce the number of people in poverty by 11.4 million, the Urban-Brookings Tax Policy Center says in its analysis.

Housing instability and food insecurity remain financial issues for many Americans, economists say.

Another round of payments could lift an additional 6.6 to 7.3 million people out of poverty, depending on whether the payment is restricted to citizens or made available to everyone, according to the Urban-Brookings Tax Policy Center.

There is a question in front of Congress about whether we should do anything else with additional stimulus payments, Maag says. The bottom line is that we could further reduce poverty and could provide additional assistance with another round of these broad payments that smaller or more target measures just cant do.

The third round of $1,400 payments is being distributed by the Internal Revenue Service. So far, 163 million payments have been disbursed since mid-March.

The first round of payments amounted to $1,200, which were disbursed through the Coronavirus Aid Relief and Economic Security Act last spring. Then came $600 in aid in a December relief measure called the Consolidated Appropriations Act Finally, millions of people received $1,400 under the American Rescue Plan signed in March by Biden.

What To Do If You’re Missing Money From The First Two Stimulus Checks

Plus-up payments are going out weekly along with the third round of checks, but they may not be the only money you’re due. For money missing from the first two checks, you need to claim that on your 2020 taxes. We suggest making sure you know how to find out your adjusted gross income. You may be eligible to claim the 2020 Recovery Rebate Credit for claiming missing money from the first two checks.

Also, last week, the IRS launched a new online for familes that don’t file taxes called the “Non-filer Sign-up Tool.” Its purpose is to help eligible families who don’t normally file a tax return enroll in the monthly child tax credit advance payment program, which is slated to begin July 15. However, the tool is also for those who did not file either a 2019 or 2020 tax return and did not use the previous nonfilers tool last year to register for stimulus payments.

In other words, individuals who experience homelessness or make little or no income can use this tool to enter their personal details for the IRS’ records so as to receive the $1,400 stimulus checks or claim the recovery rebate credit for any amount of the first two rounds of payments that might have been missed. Tax nonfilers may need to be proactive about claiming a new dependent, too.

Update On A Fourth Stimulus Check

First Stimulus Check Update 4/21/20. Second stimulus check ...

Millions have been clamoring for recurring stimulus payments, and some lawmakers have expressed support for more relief aid through the pandemic. But President Joe Biden hasn’t pledged support to a fourth check, focusing instead on his proposed family and jobs packages and the recent infrastructure deal.

In a press conference on June 3, White House press secretary Jen Psaki played down the possibility of a fourth check, asserting that the administration has already put forward an economic recovery plan. Through the debate in Washington over additional economic impact payments continues, it’s looking increasingly unlikely that there will be any more direct payments this year.

When The Stimulus Checks Will Stop Being Issued

Most of the third stimulus check payments have gone out from the IRS and US Department of the Treasury, based on the information the IRS has on hand to determine payment amounts. The , however, gives these federal agencies until Dec. 31, 2021, to send out all the third checks. That gives the IRS room to process 2020 tax returns and square up payments for those who are owed plus-up amounts, folks who filed for a 2020 tax extension and other groups, like people who moved or don’t have a fixed address .

Millions could end up receiving a smaller stimulus check than they’re owed.

Fourth Stimulus Check Update: New Checks Coming For One Group Whos Eligible

While a petition from Americans for monthly $2,000 stimulus checks hasnt gained much traction when it comes to action being taken that makes payments a reality, a separate movement to get aid to one particular group has seemingly had some success.

While a call from The Senior Citizens League for a $1,400 fourth stimulus check hasnt quite had an effect on Congress either, it is continuing to grow steam, WJW, a Cleveland-based Fox affiliate reports. A petition has been signed by more than 95,000 people thus far. The petition specifically noted that while Social Security benefits had increased by 1.3% in 2021, it averaged to only about $20 a month for most seniors, and with record inflation, most recipients indicated that they werent able to keep up with expenses as a result.

While the call for a check hasnt had success, the call to give senior citizens more aid was heard, and as a result, the 2022 Social Security Cost of Living Adjustment increased to its highest amount yet, with a 5.9% increase, a boost of approximately $92-$93 a month. According to CBS News, those born between the 1st -10th of the month received their first checks on Jan. 12, with those born between the 11th and the 20th getting theirs on the 19th. Everyone else will receive a payment on Jan. 26.

The Senior Citizens League has also noted that while an increase in COLA benefits is good, it still isnt going to help much.

Stimulus Check Scams And Hoaxes

Of course, popular demand for widely distributed stimulus payments, and the confusing political maneuvering that goes into crafting stimulus bills, creates an information gap that’s easily exploited by scammers.

Even with the first wave of stimulus checks in 2020, we saw bogus email messages that pretended to be from the IRS, promising “an important update on your Covid relief fund.” But they just took you to phishing sites that wanted your Social Security number and other sensitive bits of information.

Following the second stimulus bill at the beginning of 2021, those email phishing attempts were joined by scam phone calls demanding your personal details so that you could be “cleared” to receive more stimulus checks.

In March, as President Biden’s American Rescue Plan was making its way through Congress, new phishing emails promised the moon: a $4,000 stimulus check, a boost in the minimum wage, free meals and, best of all, priority treatment that let you skip lines at COVID-19 vaccination sites.

Most recently, cruel pranksters have been passing around posts on Facebook that a fourth stimulus check worth $2,500 is coming by the end of July. Don’t believe it, and don’t believe the phishing websites that claim to register you for child-tax-credit advance payments.

In fact, most parents and legal guardians don’t need to do anything to get the payments they’ll just show up in your mailbox or bank account.

More Stimulus Checks In The Future

On Friday, Sen. Schumer said, “today is the last chance to take up and pass the House bill to provide $2,000 checks to the American people.” It didn’t happen. With the current Congress ending and the CASH Act expiring on Sunday, the drive for additional stimulus checks for $2,000 or any other amount will therefore have to start from scratch.

For those who support additional stimulus checks, the good news is that the effort is likely to continue. Many lawmakers have already called for a third round of stimulus checks in 2021. President-Elect Joe Biden has also said he’ll push for more direct payments . So, despite the demise of the CASH Act, we still might see more and higher stimulus check payments down the road.

So, stay tuned. We’ll report any new stimulus check developments as they occur. In the meantime, you can find more information about the $600 second stimulus checks already authorized by the recently enacted COVID relief law at Your Second Stimulus Check: How Much? When? And Other FAQs.

Fourth Stimulus Check: $2000 A Month Stimulus Checks

Congress provided three stimulus checks to qualifying Americans in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. Like the previous three stimulus checks, a fourth stimulus check would come from Congress. While Democrats control Congress, there has been no serious effort to date to pass legislation that would provide $2,000 a month stimulus checks or even a fourth stimulus check. While the previous three stimulus checks were one-time stimulus checks, this petition calls for monthly stimulus checks. What is the rationale for recurring stimulus checks? Supporters say that a single stimulus check is insufficient to help Americans who are struggling financially due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. This includes those who, like Bonin, work in the restaurant sector. Last year, Rep. Ilhan Omar and 55 Democrats sent a letter to President Joe Biden to support recurring stimulus checks. However, Biden doesnt support a fourth stimulus check or recurring stimulus checks. Currently, Biden is focused on Congress passing his legislative agenda, the Build Back Better plan, which doesnt include any stimulus checks.

If Your Third Stimulus Amount Is Less Than Expected

The IRS isn’t particularly big on communicating how much money it calculates for your stimulus check. You won’t find that figure in the agency’s online tracking tool, but you will see it in the confirmation letter you’ll receive in the mail.

So what happens if you use our stimulus check calculator and notice the numbers seem way off, or the IRS letter quotes an amount you didn’t receive? Start by triple-checking your qualifications to make sure you’re eligible for the total you expect. Remember the IRS is automatically sending plus-up payments after the agency receives your 2020 tax return. If you had a baby or otherwise added a dependent in 2020, you won’t need to file an amended tax form to claim the supplement.

The IRS could open up claims for missing stimulus money before its Dec. 31 deadline to stop sending checks. If not, you might have to wait until you file your 2021 taxes in 2022 to claim it — even if you’re a nonfiler who isn’t typically required to file taxes.

Momentum For $2000 Second Stimulus Checks

LATEST Stimulus Check Update

For a while, it appeared as if there might be enough momentum behind the $2,000 second stimulus check effort to get it across the finish line. Right after the COVID relief bill authorizing $600 checks was passed by Congress, President Trump reignited the push for $2,000 payments by threatening to withhold his signature if the $600 second stimulus checks weren’t increased. Then, after the president signed the bill, the Democrat-controlled House of Representatives passed the CASH Act. In addition to boosting the already authorized $600 second stimulus checks up to $2,000 per eligible person, it would have increased the additional $600 payment for children 16 years of age or younger to $2,000 and allow these extra payments for all dependents, regardless of their age.

As President Trump continued to push for $2,000 second stimulus checks and concerns over the Georgian runoff elections surfaced, a handful of Republican Senators also climbed on the $2,000 payment bandwagon. By Tuesday, Sens. Josh Hawley , Lindsey Graham , Marco Rubio , Deb Fischer , Susan Collins , David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler all expressed support for $2,000 checks. Although these Republican senators didn’t directly say they would vote for the CASH Act itself , the idea that the CASH Act could receive the 60 votes it needed to pass in the Senate didn’t seem too farfetched by Wednesday morning.

Why Is The Irs Sending Me Letter 6475

“The Economic Impact Payment letters include important information that can help people quickly and accurately file their tax return,” the IRS said in a January release, including personal information — like your name and address — and the total amount sent in your third stimulus payment.

This could include “plus-up” payments, the additional funds the IRS sent to people who were eligible for a larger amount based on their 2019 or 2020 tax returns, or information received from the Social Security Administration, Department of Veterans’ Affairs or the Railroad Retirement Board.

You may have already received a Letter 1444-C, which showed the amount you were paid and how it was delivered, but that’s not what you want to use to prepare your 2021 return.

Child Tax Credit: December End

Some families received another form of stimulus aid when the IRS in July deposited the first of six monthly cash payments into bank accounts of parents who qualify for the Child Tax Credit . Families on average received $423 in their first CTC payment, according to an analysis of Census data from the left-leaning advocacy group Economic Security Project.

Eligible families received up to $1,800 in cash through December, with the money parceled out in equal installments over the six months from July through December. The aid was due to the expanded CTC, which is part of President Joe Biden’s American Rescue Plan.

Families who qualify received $300 per month for each child under 6 and $250 for children between 6 to 17 years old. Several families that spoke to CBS MoneyWatch said the extra money would go toward child care, back-to-school supplies and other essentials.

While progressives and some Democrats urged lawmakers to continue the enhanced CTC, it appears stalled at the moment. That means families won’t receive a CTC payment in January or beyond.
