Here Are Some Questions And Answers Around This New Stimulus Payment:

4th Checks in 1st Quarter | Stimulus Check Update | Fourth Package

If I didnt file taxes in 2019/2020 will I receive the stimulus ? Unlike the first stimulus payment where those who didnt need to file a tax return could update the IRS non-filer tool, this time around due to the speed of roll-out of the second stimulus check and with tax season around the corner the IRS has said the non-filer tool is closed for updates. The IRS will be using information they have as of Nov 21, 2020 or from your first stimulus check payment . Otherwise they are encouraging you to the stimulus by filing a 2020 1040 or 1040-SR tax return. Free tax software programs can be used by people who are not normally required to file tax returns but are eligible to claim the credit.

How will I get paid? Like the first stimulus payment in 2020, the IRS will facilitate payment of these checks based on your 2019 tax information. You will also get the dependent stimulus payment for eligible dependents claimed on your tax return. For other groups who dont file taxes the IRS will work with other government departments or the Get My Payment tool. Direct deposit will still be the fastest way to get your payment.

Dependents in 2020? Households who added dependents in 2020 might not qualify for full payments immediately, since based on 2019 tax return information. But they can request additional money as part of the 2020 tax returns they will file in early 2021. See more in this articles for dependent qualification income thresholds.

Stimulus Aid That’s Received The Ok

Child tax credit payments for families: A temporary expansion of the child tax credit for 2021 sends qualifying families up to $3,600 for each child — you can calculate your total here. The advance partial payments of up to $300 per dependent, which began this summer, are issued monthly through the end of the year, with a final payment in 2022.

Parents also have the option of deferring the advance monthly checks and instead get their payment in the spring. There is no cap on the total credit amount that a family with multiple children can claim. If the credit is more than what’s owed in taxes, families will receive the excess amount as a tax refund next year. Plus, low-income families can qualify for the maximum credit. Here’s more on child tax credit payment dates and eligibility.

Additional federal stimulus money: The third stimulus payments of up to $1,400 are still going out in batches to those who are eligible through the end of 2021. The IRS is also sending out “plus-up” payments, which is extra money making up the difference between the stimulus amount you already received and the amount you’re eligible to receive .

Also, if an individual in your family becomes a dependent in 2021, such as a newborn or foster child, they could also be eligible for a $1,400 payment. According to the tax agency, for any new qualifying dependents to receive the third payment you’d have to claim a Recovery Rebate Credit on your 2021 tax return that you’ll file in 2022.

When Will The New Stimulus Payments/checks Be Made

The IRS will be responsible for making these stimulus payment checks and Treasury Secretary Mnuchin, whose department oversees the IRS, said that payments go out within a week of the bill being formally approved. This means payments could hit bank accounts before the end of the year. Payments would be made in multiple batches and if all goes according to plan the first round of payments would begin on 12/28 . Processing will go until January 15th for Direct Deposit payments. Checks and Debit Cards will take until the end of January 2020 to get processed. See more on the IRS Stimulus Check Payment Schedule.

The inclusion of the one-time stimulus payment however has also meant a cut in extra unemployment benefits that are also part of the overall package. More to come as the bill gets finalized and I will post updates. See this $600 stimulus update video for a quick summary as well.

Fourth Stimulus Check Update: Bidens Focused On American Families Plan But Doesnt Rule Out More Payments

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Millions of Americans and a handful of lawmakers have the same question on their mind — will the White House agree to a fourth stimulus check?

President Joe Biden and his administration havent said that a fourth stimulus check is off the table, but they havent given much hope that it will happen.

White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said Biden hasnt ruled out another round of economic stimulus payments to Americans, however, his focus is on the in-the-works American Families Plan.

The American Families Plan is, according to a statement from the White House, to grow the middle class, expand the benefits of economic growth to all Americans, and leave the United States more competitive.

The plan also hopes to, add at least four years of free education, provide direct support to children and families, and extend tax cuts for families with children and American workers.

Psaki said, happy to hear from a range of ideas on what would be most effective and whats most important to the economy moving forward. But hes also proposed what he thinks is going to be the most effective for the short term for putting people back to work, to getting through this pivotal period of time, and also to making us more competitive in the long term.

But Theres Always A Glimmer Of Hope

Although pockets of the economy are booming, the unemployment rate remains above where it stood before the pandemic, and other enhancements, such as the expanded child tax credit, have expired. The bottom line is that many Americans are still struggling. Against this backdrop, numerous proposals for additional stimulus have been pushed, from a fourth stimulus check to recurring $2,000 monthly payments. If the economy were to roll over again, or if another coronavirus variant began increasing hospitalizations and deaths again, the drumbeat for additional stimulus may grow louder.

The IRS has confirmed that payments for most working Americans are expected to be calculated and deposited or mailed via check based on 2018 or 2019 federal tax filing payment details. Most people wont need to take any action and the IRS will calculate and automatically send the economic stimulus payment to those eligible. The Treasury department, under which the IRS falls has also created a website/portal for those who are not required to file U.S. income taxes or who have to change payment information .

For those who have not yet filed their return for 2019, the IRS will use information from their 2018 tax filing to calculate the payment. The economic impact payment will be deposited directly into the same banking account reflected on the last valid return filed. So if your 2018 information is out of date or your income situation changed in 2019, make sure you file, even if you have no taxes due .

Thesis Two: Americans Need Additional Money To Cope With Rising Prices

The clearest argument for additional federal stimulus comes from actual data recorded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, which found that government action during the heart of the pandemic kept 11 million Americans out of poverty. According to the HHS, The most impactful programs for alleviating poverty were economic impact payments under the ARP and unemployment compensation.

Elaine Maag, a senior research fellow at the Tax Policy Center, told Changing America that while another federal stimulus check is unlikely, it really could help American cope with rising inflation, particularly those with lower income. According to Maag, these types of households tend to have less money in emergency savings, so delivering some sort of cash benefit now would sort of protect them from the inflation thats happening around them.

Former presidential candidate Andrew Yang feels that the stimulus packages have gotten too much of the blame for inflation. As Yang told CNBC, Money in peoples hands for a couple of months last year in my mind was a very, very minor factor, in that most of that money has long since been spent and yet you see inflation continue to rise.

Yang has long been a proponent of universal basic income, and he feels that additional direct payments to Americans will help keep the economy stable during future crises and keep more Americans out of poverty.

Fourth Stimulus Check Update: Payments Worked Could Be Used Again In Case Of Recession

Americans benefitted greatly from stimulus checks during the beginning of the COVID-19 Pandemic, and now, with the threat of a Recession looming, some have wondered if other rounds of payments could be on the horizon as many struggle with record inflation. While no decisions have made yet, some experts feel that if a Recession does in fact happen, that the government could consider sending out more checks as a result.

Speaking to CNBC, several financial experts indicated that a recession could trigger the government to send out another round of stimulus checks, as Americans may need the funds. However, the likeliness also depends on what is believed to have triggered the recession, according to Joseph Vavra, an economics professor at the University of Chicago.

In his analysis, Vavra stated that because some believe the high inflation rates are at least partially tied to the three rounds of COVID-19 stimulus checks, and a recession could be triggered because the Federal Reserve continues hiking interest rates, checks would be counterproductive. However, he also noted that if a recession got bad enough, the government would likely change its tune.

I think its likely they may be used again in future deep recessions, he said.

However, while Vavra was more cautious about the possibility checks would be utilized again, others felt that they could be more guaranteed.

Th Stimulus Checks Given Out To Targeted Groups

Some states are digging into that wad of cash the government gave them and giving out the fourth stimulus checks to specific groups of people. The requirements look different for each state, but all seem to have a few things in commonlike falling into certain income levels or going through some kind of hardship.

  • Arizona

The Grand Canyon State has a different take when it comes to stimulus checkstheyre giving them out to people who are going back to work. Arizonas Back to Work Program is offering $2,000 to those who got a job after being on unemployment.3 But you have to hold down your new job for at least eight weeks before getting the benefit.

  • California

The Golden State is the only one on the list to give out big ol broad-sweeping stimulus checks that look like the ones the federal government gave out. Heres how their numbers break down: Californians making $75,000 or less were sent a one-time check of $600 or $1,200 as part of the Golden State Stimulus I.4 And with the Golden State Stimulus II, they could be eligible for a second stimulus payment anywhere from $500 to $1,100.5 Thats on top of extra money the state paid out through the Young Child Tax Credit to those who have children age 6 or younger.6

  • Colorado

Child Or Dependent Qualification For The $500 Payment

Several readers have asked questions around the $500 child dependent additional stimulus payment. To get this payment you must have filed a 2018 or 2019 tax return and claimed the child as dependent ANDthe child must be younger than 17-years-old at the end of 2020. They must also be related to you by blood, marriage, or adoption . There is no limit to the number of dependents who can qualify for the additional $500 in one household.

This age limit is much younger than what is used by the IRS in the qualifying child test where a child must be younger than 19 years old or be a student younger than 24 years old as of the end of the calendar year. Hence the confusion being caused by this. So just remember if your child or eligible dependent is 17 or over you cannot claim the stimulus payment for them.

College Kids and High School Seniors

The younger than 17 yr old requirement has ruled out several thousand college students and high school kids who are older than 17, but still being claimed as a dependent by their parents on their federal tax return.

However if you are a college student AND filed a recent tax return you can qualify for a standard/adult stimulus check per the above eligibility rules. But note as soon as you file a return you cannot be claimed as a dependent by others, which means they lose certain other tax benefits and credits.
