Claiming Your Stimulus Check In Your 2020 Tax Return
Eligible individuals who did not receive an Economic Impact Payment this year either the first or the second payment due to a myriad of possible reasons will be able to claim it when they file their 2020 taxes in 2021. People will see the Economic Impact Payments referred to as the Recovery Rebate Credit on Form 1040 or Form 1040-SR since the EIPs are an advance payment of the RRC.
If you did not give the IRS your direct deposit account information through your federal tax return in the last two years, and have not provided the IRS with your information as a non-filer, you will likely receive a US Treasury check or debit card in some circumstances. The check will be mailed to the address on file at the IRS from the prior year tax return. It could take 5 to 6 weeks to get the check via mail.

Plus Up Payments For Those With Updated Information Or Missing Stimulus Checks
IRS EIP/stimulus payments now include ongoing supplemental payments for people who earlier in March received payments based on their 2019 tax returns but are eligible for a new or larger payment based on their recently processed 2020 tax returns . These plus-up payments could include a situation where a persons income dropped in 2020 compared to 2019, or a person had a new child or dependent on their 2020 tax return, and other situations.
Millions of catch-up or plus-up payments have also now been issued to individuals for whom the IRS previously did not have information to issue a Stimulus payment but who recently filed a 2020 tax return.

What If I Make A Mistake On My Return That Decreases The Amount Of My Refund
If the mistake results in a smaller refund, IRS will use a bottom-up rule and deduct the difference from the amount you designated for the last account shown on Form 8888. If the difference exceeds the amount designated for the last account, IRS will deduct the remainder from the amount designated to the next account, etc.
Example: Your return shows a refund of $300 and you ask IRS to split your refund among three accounts with $100 to each account. Due to an error, your refund is decreased by $150. IRS will adjust your direct deposits as follows:
$100 | $0 |
IRS will apply this same bottom-up rule to adjust direct deposits for refund offsets for unpaid federal taxes or if the Earned Income Tax Credit portion of your refund is withheld pending further review.
You will receive a letter from IRS explaining any errors resulting in adjustments to your return, your refund amount, and direct deposit.
IRS recommends using electronic filing to avoid math errors and other common problems that can result in adjustments to your return and change the amount of your refund.

What’s Next For Federal Stimulus Payments In 2022
While there are no federal stimulus payments on the horizon, Democratic lawmakers have proposed more federal payments to Americans via the Gas Rebate Act of 2022. If signed into law, the act, which is meant to help Americans combat high gas prices, would provide energy rebate payments of $100 per month to eligible taxpayers across the nation and an additional $100 per dependent. The act is still in the early stages, though — so whether or not anything will come of it remains to be seen.

Many Households Are Getting A Much Larger Payment This Time
A $1,400 maximum total per person is an obvious way your household would see more money from a third check . But theres more to it than that. Since the upper limit for the second check was $600 per adult with an extra $600 per child dependent , more people hit the upper income limit for receiving a second payment. And that means they didnt actually qualify to get any stimulus money at all.
A third stimulus check makes more groups of people eligible to receive money and bring a larger total check to qualified individuals and their families, including $1,400 payments to dependents. A change in your circumstances can also mean you qualify for more money this time. Here are other ways a third stimulus check could put more money in your pocket.
What Should I Do To Claim The Credit
Most taxpayers shouldnt take additional action to file for the credit besides filing their 2020 tax return if they havent done so already.
Additionally, eligible taxpayers who don’t want to receive advanced payments for 2021 can decline to receive the monthly payments, but the IRS has yet to detail how to do that.

How Many People Got Stimulus Check Money Through Direct Deposit With The Third Check
By March 17, more than 90 million of the $1,400 stimulus payments were made through direct deposit, the IRS said, with 17 million more estimated to go out by March 24, The Washington Post reported. Over 75% of the first round of payments and more than 80% of the second payments were distributed via direct deposit.
How Much Money Will I Get
If you made less than $75,000 on your 2020 tax return and were not claimed as a dependent by someone else, youll be eligible for $600. If you made between $75,000 and $87,000 on your most recently reported income year, youll receive a reduced payment.
Families with children 16 or under will receive an additional $600 for each child who qualifies.

Why Won’t The Irs Let Me Sign Up To Receive The Third Payment As A Direct Deposit
Good question, and we don’t have an answer. The IRS opened up direct deposit registration for the first stimulus check in April 2020 and shut down the feature on May 15 that year. The tool wasn’t turned back on for the second checks, when the agency had just over two weeks to complete making payments.
This time, the IRS said it’ll “use data already in its systems to send the third stimulus payments. Taxpayers with direct deposit information on file will receive the payment that way. Those without current direct deposit information on file will receive the payment as a check or debit card in the mail.”
In general, you’ll get your money faster through direct deposit than with a paper check.
What To Do If You Cant Find Your Stimulus Check

If your IRS online account shows that you should have received a stimulus payment, but you didnt get it, theres a chance it could have been lost in the mail. Or you might have thrown away the prepaid debit card you received.
If you lost your stimulus check or suspect it was stolen, you can request the IRS trace your payment. If the IRS determines your check hasnt been cashed, it will issue a credit to your account. It cant reissue your payment, but you can claim the payment on your 2021 tax return using the Recovery Rebate Tax Credit worksheet.
If a trace is initiated and the IRS determines that the check wasnt cashed, the IRS will credit your account for that payment. However, the IRS cant reissue your payment. Instead, you will need to claim the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit on your 2021 tax return if eligible.
If you lost your EIP card, a prepaid debit card on which some individuals received their stimulus payment, contact card issuer MetaBank to request a replacement.

Second $600 Stimulus Check Details
While the CAA legislation, under which the stimulus payments were funded, required that the second round of payments be issued by Jan. 15, 2021, some second round Economic Impact Payments may still be in the mail and delivered by the end of February. The IRS however has confirmed has issued all first and second Economic Impact Payments it is legally permitted to issue, based on information on file for eligible people.
Get My Payment was last updated on Jan. 29, 2021, to reflect the final payments and will not update again for first or second Economic Impact Payments.
If you havent yet received your payment and GMP is not showing payment details then the IRS is recommending you claim this via a recovery rebate credit in your 2020 tax return that you will file this year. Major tax software providers like Turbo Tax and Tax Act have updated their software to allow tax payers to claim their missing first or second stimulus payment as a recovery rebate with their 2020 tax filing.
Under the COVID-related Tax Relief Act of 2020, the IRS has delivered more than 147 million EIPs totaling over $142 billion. Due to the lower income qualification thresholds and smaller payments this was lower than the 160 million payments made via the first stimulus check.
Request To Share Information Is Not Accepted
If ESDC does not accept your request to share information, you will receive the following message:
ESDC was unable to process your request to share your Direct Deposit information. Please contact ESDC at 1-800-277-9914 for more information.
Non-acceptance could be for several reasons: for example, you do not receive CPP payments or your family name or date of birth on file with ESDC does not match CRA records. This message will stay on your account for three months.

Register Paper Bonds In Your Name Or Someone Else
When you purchase savings bonds with your tax refund, you will receive paper bonds, issued in your name or the names you designate as primary owner, co-owner or beneficiary. You can request up to three different savings bond registrations for yourself and spouse, if married and filing a joint return, or someone other than yourself. If you order bonds for yourself and spouse, the bonds will be issued in the names shown on the return.
Stimulus Check Missing Payment Issues Or Errors
The IRS will also be mailing Stimulus Payment letters to each eligible recipients last known address 15 days after the payment is made. The letter will provide information on how the Payment was made and how to report any failure to receive the Payment. Note that the IRS or other government departments will not contact you about your stimulus check payment details either.
Why didnt I get a stimulus check? Remember that the IRS has to have your direct deposit details, which is normally only provided if you received a 2018 or 2019 refund. If you file a return and they cannot use their portal to add direct deposit details, then your payment will come via check which could take several weeks. At this checks will likely start arriving at your IRS registered address from the end of April.
Finally you will also likely be able to claim any missing payments in your 2020 tax return as a tax credit. All this unfortunately will mean delays in getting your stimulus payment until issues are worked through.

Treasury & Irs Release State
WASHINGTON The U.S. Department of the Treasury and the Internal Revenue Service released state-by-state data through early June for the 163.5 million Economic Impact Payments totaling nearly $390 billion received by individuals through the American Rescue Plan Act. With this round of payments, the IRS and the Bureau of the Fiscal Service have delivered more EIPs and more total direct relief than in any previous round of direct relief. All 50 states saw more total relief with this round of payments than in previous rounds.
The EIP data, available on IRS.gov, cover payments made through June 3 and provide, by state, income category, and filing status, information on the number and dollar amounts of payments, as well as aspects of the payments. More than half of this direct relief has gone to households making less than $50,000 a year. Another 10 percent of the payments went to Social Security, Railroad Retirement Board, and Department of Veterans Affairs beneficiaries whose incomes were not large enough to be required to file an income tax return and to individuals who used the online Non-filer tool. In total, more than 85 percent of the payments went to households making less than $100,000 a year.

Injured Spouse Claim And Spousal Claims
The IRS also stated that If you are married filing jointly and you filed an injured spouse claim with your 2019 tax return , half of the total payment will be sent to each spouse and your spouses stimulus check payment will be offset only for past-due child support. There is no need to file another injured spouse claim for the payment. I have received dozens of comments on this this, so hopefully this answers the questions many have had based on official IRS guidance.
Note that if you were current with your child support payments at the time of the stimulus eligibility determination but fell behind afterwards due to a COVID-19 related job loss, you would still be eligible to get the full stimulus payment.
Updating Direct Deposit Information
This question has come up a lot in the hundreds of comments to this article. The IRS has setup a portal for individuals to provide their updated banking information to receive payments via direct deposit as opposed to checks in the mail. The IRS does recommend that 2018 Filers who need to change their account information or mailing address, file 2019 taxes electronically as soon as possible. That is the only way to let us know your new information. You can file for free via TurboTax.

How Will The Irs Know Where To Send My Payment What If I Changed Bank Accounts
Taxpayers with direct deposit information on file with the IRS will receive the payment that way. For those without direct deposit information on file with the IRS, the IRS will use federal records of recent payments to or from the government, where available, to make the payment as a direct deposit. This helps to expedite payment delivery. Otherwise, taxpayers will receive their payment as a check or debit card in the mail. If the direct deposit information is sent to a closed bank account, the payment will be reissued by mail to the address on file with the IRS. The IRS encourages taxpayers to check the Get My Payment tool for additional information.
