What If I Didnt Get The Right Amount

Third stimulus check update: Latest timeline for $1,400 payments in bank accounts

Some people may get their checks quickly, yet discover the payment amount is incorrect that could be due to their dependents or changes in income.

The law provides $1,400 per adult and dependent, as long as the household income falls below the income threshold for eligibility. In the current bill, single people whose adjusted gross income was below $75,000 and married couples with income below $150,000 will receive their full payments, as well as their dependents. Payments decline for earnings above that, cutting off entirely for single people earning $80,000 and $160,000 for married couples.

But some people may not get the right amount, especially if they havent yet filed their 2020 tax returns, given that the IRS extended the tax deadline until May 17. For instance, if a family had a baby last year but hasnt yet filed their 2020 returns, the IRS would base their payments on their 2019 returns which wouldnt include their new baby. In that case, the family would receive $2,800 for themselves, but not the extra $1,400 for their child.

For instance, the most recent batch of checks issued this week include plus-up payments for people who received checks based on their 2019 tax returns but who have since filed their 2020 tax returns and are owed more. The agency said such extra payments could reflect a loss of income in 2020, which could entitle the tax filers to more stimulus money, or if they had a child last year.

What Social Security Administration Says

The Social Security Administration has yet to release updated advice on third stimulus payments.

The SSA stated on March 12: The IRS is reviewing the tax provisions of the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021, signed into law on March 11, 2021. We will add helpful Q& As to this page soon, like we did for each of the first two rounds of EIPs.

If you still subscribe to receive updates from us when we update our EIP1 and EIP2 pages, we will automatically add you to a subscription list for this new EIP page, the SSA added.

A spokesperson for NACHA told The Liberty Buzz: Unfortunately, it appears we dont know enough yet . The only information we were given is that SSA rules require that legislation be passed before they can work to find eligibility and payment information.

The Liberty Buzz has contacted the SSA, IRS and the Bureau of the Fiscal Service for comment.

A stimulus check is a check that the government sends to a taxpayer. Incentive checks are designed to stimulate the economy by providing consumers with pocket money. When taxpayers spend this money, they increase fuel economy and increase revenues for retailers and manufacturers, boosting the economy.

Eligible Parents Will Get Money In Their Bank Accounts On Dec 15

The existing Child Tax Credit payment prior to the American Rescue Plan Act was worth $2,000 per eligible child but only $1,400 of the credit was refundable, meaning those with less than $2,000 in annual tax liability didnt necessarily receive the full amount.

The funds also came to parents only after they filed tax returns and claimed their credit, which means it was a once-yearly payment. And some people didnt actually get money back, but instead the credit simply reduced their tax bill.

The American Rescue Plan Act expanded the credit to $3,600 per eligible child under age 6 and $3,000 for children aged 6 to 17. The IRS also began delivering part of the credit at a rate of $250 or $300 per month beginning in June.

These payments were already deposited into bank accounts on or around the 15th of the month in June, July, August, September, October, and November for those who gave the IRS their bank details. Now, the last payment will be made in December.

If the IRS has your bank information on file, you should get the money youre due tomorrow. This will be your last payment of the year. And, after you receive it, half of your expanded credit will be delivered. You can claim the remaining half when you file your 2021 tax return in 2022.

What Is The Timeline For Receiving A Stimulus Payment

After the House and Senate pass the bill, the President will need to sign the bill into law. Once the bill is signed into law, stimulus checks would likely begin to deposit in accounts within a few days. The Treasury Department previously initiated direct-deposit for the first and second stimulus payments using information on your tax return. The Treasury Department mailed checks and debit cards to recipients in the following weeks.

The current weekly addition of $300 in unemployment benefits is set to expire March 14, 2021. Lawmakers say they are on track to prevent additional benefits from expiring before that date, so its possible payments would be available in mid-March.

The Requirements For The Third Stimulus Check Under The Ssdi And Ssi Schemes

The American Rescue Plan has just been approved and you have automatically qualified for the $1,400 payment of the third stimulus check if you are under either the SSI or the SSDI scheme. This was also true during the first rounds of payment.

But you received your payment in the initial rounds based solely on your Social Security Number, and someone had not identified you as dependent on their tax returns. Also, to qualify, your income had to be below $75,000 a year for individuals, $112,500 for every household head, and $150,000 if you were married.

But the requirements for the third stimulus checks are a little different. You will receive your payment even if you are an adult dependent. The amount you receive has also been increased. The criteria are also more focused this time. While all those who earn below $75,000 will receive the maximum amount, individuals earning above $80,000 in a year will receive nothing. For married couples, the amounts are $150,000 and $160,000 respectively. So while some will receive more, others earning more than the predetermined amount will be denied this time around.

Others to qualify automatically for the third stimulus check are those receiving Veteran Affairs or Railroad Retirement benefits.

Which Tax Return Is Used For My Third Stimulus Check

The IRS uses 2019 or 2020 tax returns to determine eligibility for your third stimulus check. You should note that if your income fell in the 2020 tax year, filing your tax return earlier could help you qualify for a bigger third stimulus check. The new stimulus plan targets lower income ranges to exclude higher-earning taxpayers from getting a payment.

As we pointed out before, individuals making under $75,000 get the maximum stimulus payment of $1,400 . But payments are capped at $80,000 for single filers and $160,000 for couples. So filing at the beginning of the tax season with a lower income may help you qualify for a bigger check. But, if your income went up in tax year 2020, then you may want to delay filing so that eligibility is determined by your lower 2019 income.

You might also want to file early if the size of your family increased in 2020. The new stimulus plan includes a child tax credit that pays up to $3,600 for each qualifying child under 6 years old, and $3,000 for every child between ages 6 and 17. This means that if you became a parent during the tax year, you could get an additional payment by claiming your child as a dependent earlier.

How To Make Sure You Get Your Cash

Most households havent had to do anything to receive their stimulus checks, particularly if they submit tax returns each year.

But if you dont usually file taxes, and the IRS likely doesnt have your banking or mailing information, youll want to do your taxes immediately, so youll you get a Round 3 stimulus check and any other COVID relief money you deserve.

That might include the upcoming family stimulus checks: monthly payments of up to $300 per child under a temporary expansion of the child tax credit. Those checks are set to start flowing in mid-July and run through the end of the year.

Could Someone Else Have Received My Payment

For some disability recipients who have representative payees, the IRS deposited the first stimulus payment into the representative payees bank account or sent the payee a check. But since the stimulus money isnt a Social Security or SSI benefit, the representative payee is not responsible for managing it. Disability recipients who want to use the money on their own were instructed to ask their payees for it.

Similarly, some disability lawyers reported receiving first stimulus payments that were meant for former clients whom the lawyers helped get disability benefits. Lawyers who received the money erroneously were instructed to reverse the direct deposits to the IRS. The Treasury Department was expected to fix this error for the second stimulus payment.

Beware of Stimulus Check Scams
Scammers claiming to be from the Treasury Department or the IRS have been calling, texting, and emailing disability recipients, asking for personal financial information or for a fee to expedite your stimulus payment. Do not respond the IRS will not contact you for your information, and you do not have to pay a fee to receive your check.

Who Is Eligible For The Third Stimulus Check

While eligibility is similar to the first and second stimulus checks, there are differences. There are four primary requirements:

1. Income: The income requirements to receive the full payment are the same as the first and second stimulus checks. There is no minimum income needed to qualify for the payment. Households with adjusted gross income up to $75,000 for individuals will receive the full payment. The third stimulus payment starts to phaseout for people with higher earnings. The third stimulus checks maximum income limit is lower than the first and second stimulus check. Single filers who earned more than $80,000 in 2020 are ineligible for the third stimulus check.

View the chart below to compare income requirements for the first, second, and third stimulus checks.

Income to Receive Full Stimulus Payment First Stimulus Check Maximum Income Limit Second Stimulus Check Maximum Income Limit Third Stimulus Check Maximum Income Limit
Single Filer
$120,000

2. Social Security Number: This requirement is different from the first and second stimulus check.

Any family member that has a Social Security number or dependent can qualify for the third stimulus check. For example, in a household where both parents have ITINs, and their children have SSNs, the children qualify for stimulus checks, even though the parents dont.

See the chart below for further explanation of how this works.

Us At The Back Of The Pack In Family Infrastructure Spending

Is a 4th stimulus check coming your way in 2021?

Congress is pulling together the various proposals of President Bidens Build Back Better plan. The sweeping legislation, if passed, would be the greatest expansion of the US social safety net since the 1960s. Part of the bill would help address the needs of working families to balance the work with the obligations of raising a family, an area where the US lags far behind other developed economies.

How Do I Claim My Third Stimulus Payment

The IRS said in early March that most residents who received SSI and SSDI benefits in 2020 should not need to take any action to get their third stimulus payment.

The IRS will automatically send third stimulus payments to those who didnt file a tax return but are recipients of SSI, SSDI, Railroad Retirement and Veterans Affairs benefits.

However, some of those expecting to receive an automatic third stimulus payment based on their federal benefits information may need to file a 2020 tax return even if they dont usually file taxes.

If your third payment does not include a payment for your qualified dependent who did not receive a third payment, you must file a 2020 tax return to be considered for an additional third payment even if you dont normally file, the IRS advised on March 4.

On March 4, the federal body said it is working with the aforementioned federal benefits agencies to get updated information for 2021 to assist with stimulus payments at a date to be determined.

Seniors Living With An Adult Child

When will Social Security recipients get the third stimulus check?

Question: Will seniors who live with an adult child get a third stimulus check?

Answer: Again, anyone who is claimed as a dependent on someone else’s tax return doesn’t qualify for a third stimulus check. So, elderly people living with an adult child won’t get a check if they can be claimed as a dependent on their child’s tax return.

However, as with college students and young adults living with their parents, an adult child supporting an elderly parent will get an extra $1,400 added on to his or her third stimulus check if the elderly parent is a dependent. Again, the age of the dependent doesn’t matter for third-round stimulus checks like it did with earlier stimulus payments.

If Your Third Stimulus Amount Is Less Than Expected

The IRS isn’t particularly big on communicating how much money it calculates for your stimulus check. You won’t find that figure in the agency’s online tracking tool, but you will see it in the confirmation letter you’ll receive in the mail.

So what happens if you use our stimulus check calculator and notice the numbers seem way off, or the IRS letter quotes an amount you didn’t receive? Start by triple-checking your qualifications to make sure you’re eligible for the total you expect. Remember the IRS is automatically sending plus-up payments after the agency receives your 2020 tax return. If you had a baby or otherwise added a dependent in 2020, you won’t need to file an amended tax form to claim the supplement.

The IRS could open up claims for missing stimulus money before its Dec. 31 deadline to stop sending checks. If not, you might have to wait until you file your 2021 taxes in 2022 to claim it — even if you’re a nonfiler who isn’t typically required to file taxes.
