Qualifications And Distribution For The Third Stimulus Check While Recieving Ssi Or Ssdi Benefits
Qualifying for the third stimulus check
As the pandemic continues, a third stimulus check has been approved by the IRS and distribution is underway. If you receive Supplemental Security Income or Social Security Disability Insurance benefits, you will automatically qualify for the third stimulus check which will be in the amount $1400. Even if you are a dependent, you will qualify. This includes young adults , and older adult dependents. The stimulus checks will be distributed over a few weeks’ time. SSI/SSDI recipients may not receive the third stimulus check in the first wave. The IRS has not yet identified a payment date, but the first wave of relief payments goes out as early as this weekend. It is also important to note that with the third stimulus check being rolled out during heavy tax season, this may cause additional delays.
Distribution of the third stimulus check
For the first and second relief packages, those SSI/SSDI recipients who did not have bank account information on file with the IRS, likely received those payments through a Direct Express card or as a paper check. For the third round, however, you will most likely receive your stimulus check the same way you receive all other benefits.

Electronic Delivery Of Payments
The Social Security Administration no longer mails paper checks, although the U.S. Department of the Treasury does occasionally make some isolated exceptions to this rule. Otherwise, there are two ways you can receive your benefits:
- You can request direct deposit. Payments will be automatically posted into your bank account on your payment date.
- Your benefits will be paid to a Direct Express debit card if you dont have a bank account or you dont sign up for direct deposit. Payments are automatically posted to your card account on your payment day. The card works anywhere that takes Debit Mastercard and you can use it to get cash at ATMs, cash back at the grocery store, or to set up automatic payment of your monthly bills.
You have a third option if youre receiving Social Security disability benefits. You can set up an Electronic Transfer Account with the SSA, which will make automatic payments on your behalf from your disability benefits.
Who Is Eligible For The Most Recent Stimulus Payments
Individual taxpayers who filed a federal income tax return in 2019 or 2020 reporting adjusted gross income of $75,000 or less receive $1,400 in the third round of stimulus payments. The adjusted gross income limit for someone filing a return as a head of household is $112,500. Married couples filing joint returns cannot show more than $150,000 in adjusted gross income to qualify for the maximum stimulus payment with reductions made for adjusted gross incomes exceeding the stated limits.

Third Stimulus Checks And Ssi: What It Means For Social Security Recipients
ST. LOUIS The U.S. Treasury has started sending out $1,400 payments as part of the recently passed American Rescue Plan but what does that mean for people on Social Security and when will SSI recipients receive their stimulus check?
According to the IRS, the third round of economic stimulus, known to the Treasury as EIP3, will be sent to people who didnt file a return but receive Social Security retirement, survivor or disability benefits , Railroad Retirement benefits, Supplemental Security Income or Veterans Affairs benefits. This is similar to the first and second rounds of Economic Impact Payments, often referred to as EIP1 and EIP2.
The IRS has not confirmed the official payment date. Social Security recipients will get the payment the same way they would normally receive Social Security benefits.
For those who received EIP1 or EIP2 but dont receive a payment via direct deposit, they will generally receive a check or, in some instances, a prepaid debit card . A payment will not be added to an existing EIP card mailed for the first or second round of stimulus payments, the IRS says.
While the payment date for many recipients was March 18, a specific date for Social Security recipients has not been confirmed.
What Should I Know If I’m Not Currently Living In The Us

If you’re a Social Security beneficiary with a foreign address whose monthly benefit is deposited in a foreign bank account, you should receive your third stimulus payment through either direct deposit, Direct Express card or a check in the mail, according to the SSA . The IRS began sending out payments to this group through direct deposit and Direct Express card on April 21, and began sending paper checks in the mail for this group on April 23
If you live abroad but receive your monthly benefits through a US bank, you should have received your first two payments by direct deposit to that account. If you still haven’t gotten your money, it will have to be claimed as part of a tax return. Find out everything you need to know about stimulus checks, citizenship and living abroad here.

No further action is needed by taxpayers who filed tax returns in 2018 and 2019 and most seniors and retirees.

Who likely wont get a check? People whose adjusted gross income is greater than:
$99,000 if your filing status was single or married filing separately$136,500 for head of household$198,000 if your filing status was married filing jointly

What If A Beneficiary Alleges A Representative Payee Misused The Economic Impact Payment
Date: March 26, 2021
Because an EIP is not a Social Security or SSI benefit, SSA does not have authority to investigate or determine whether the EIP has been misused. However, if SSA receives an allegation that the EIP was not used on behalf of the beneficiary, SSA may decide to investigate for possible misuse of the beneficiarys Social Security or SSI benefit payments. SSA may also determine the representative payee is no longer suitable and appoint a new representative payee.

When Is The Latest Round Of Stimulus Payments Expected For Ssi Ssdi Beneficiaries And Veterans
Federal beneficiaries who filed a 2019 or 2020 tax return or used the Non-Filers tool in 2020 may have already received a stimulus payment, or could get one in a future batch of checks being sent out by the government.
For most everyone else, payments started going out on April 7 by direct deposit or on your Direct Express card. For those receiving payments through the mail, those checks began on April 9. If you have a foreign address and don’t typically file a tax return, electronic payments went out around April 21 and paper checks on April 23. The IRS and Treasury will use the information it has on file to automatically send you a check . People who have already filed a 2020 tax return this year to claim missing stimulus money may find that the IRS will use this information instead of your 2019 details if it has processed your latest return .
Some people may need to file a 2020 tax return, even if they don’t usually file, so the IRS has all the information needed to send payments to cover eligible dependents.

Will The Stimulus Money Affect My Eligibility For Disability Benefits
For SSI eligibility purposes, the stimulus check won’t count as income to you, and you don’t need to report it as income to the Social Security Administration. Plus, it’s not taxable. In addition, for SSI, the stimulus money won’t count as a resource unless you still have all or part of it 12 months after receiving it.
For SSDI eligibility purposes, income and assets don’t matter, so the stimulus check will have no effect.
Fourth Stimulus Check Approval: Heres What Itll Take
The White House hasnt responded to any of the proposals for additional stimulus checks, and the general sentiment is that a fourth stimulus check isnt likely. Economists have suggested weve already moved past the pandemics worst financial woes, although there are signs that Americans could still use relief.
Experts certainly seem in agreement that there wont be a fourth stimulus check. The latest stimulus package, the American Rescue Plan, is gonna be the last on that front, Deutsche Bank senior U.S. economist Brett Ryan told Fortune. No more checks.
Ed Mills, Washington policy analyst at Raymond James, agreed, telling CNBC recentlyI think its unlikely at this time. D.C. has largely started to pivot towards the recovery and an infrastructure bill.
Many economists and financial experts are worried that the third stimulus checks have contributed to a growing inflation rate. In June 2021, the core inflation rate, stripped of energy and food prices, rose 4.5% at an annual rate vs. the Dow Jones estimate of 3.8%. The overall consumer price index rose at an annualized 5.4% rate in June.

What If The Irs Didn’t Send Me The Full Amount For The First Or Second Stimulus Payment
According to the IRS, people who receive Social Security retirement, SSDI, SSI and Railroad Retirement benefits, as well as Veterans Affairs beneficiaries, were automatically eligible for the first two stimulus payments. If you receive these federal benefits as your only form of income, you weren’t required to file a federal income tax return in 2018 or 2019. Under the CARES Act, you should have received a stimulus check automatically.
If that money didn’t arrive, it’s possible you might have had a payment garnished for child support or funds diverted to pay a specific kind of creditor, but the rules changed with the second check. However, an IRS error could also be a potential culprit or the IRS may have needed more information about your eligibility.
To receive your money now, you need to claim the additional amount as part of tax season 2020, using the Recovery Rebate Credit. Even if you don’t usually file taxes, you’ll have to file to get the funds. The deadline for filing your 2020 taxes was extended to May 17, 2021.
In some cases — if you received a letter from the IRS confirming that your payment was sent, but you never actually got the money, for instance — you may need to contact the IRS to request a payment trace.
The IRS says you can create and then check an IRS account to see more information about your eligibility around the first two stimulus payments.
When Will I Get The Stimulus Check

Those who filed tax returns in 2019 or 2020 and gave their bank information to the IRS so their refunds could be direct-deposited should receive their third stimulus payment in mid-March. The IRS says it will announce dates soon for when disability and SSI recipients can expect their checks.
The IRS will also upload new payment data to its “Get My Payment” tool soon, so you can check to see if and when your payment was issued.
If you receive monthly payments by a Direct Express card, you may not recognize the bank account information shown in the Get My Payment tool it may be a number associated with your Direct Express card.

Do College Students Adult Dependents Get The Third Stimulus Check
Unlike the first and second rounds of checks, payments for dependents in the third round are not restricted to only children under 17.
According to the IRS website: “Eligible families will get a payment based on all of their qualifying dependents claimed on their return, including older relatives like college students, adults with disabilities, parents and grandparents.”
Now it’s important to note that if you’re a dependent, the check won’t go to you, it’ll go to whoever claims you as a dependent.
What If My Stimulus Check Or Was Lost Destroyed Or Stolen
If the Get My Payment tool says your payment was direct-deposited, but the money doesn’t show in your bank account after five days, first check with your bank. If the bank says it hasn’t received a payment, you can request a payment trace.
To request a payment trace, call 800-919-9835 or fill out IRS Form 3911, Taxpayer Statement Regarding Refund.
Similarly, if the Get My Payment tool says your payment was mailed and you haven’t received it, you can request a payment trace. The IRS will research what happened to your check if the check wasn’t cashed, you will need to claim the Recovery Rebate Credit on your 2020 tax return. If the IRS finds that the check was cashed, you’ll receive a claim package from the Treasury Department with a copy of the cashed check and instructions on filing a claim.
If you received your stimulus check by mail but then it was destroyed or stolen, make sure you request a payment trace. If you claim the Recovery Rebate Credit on your 2020 tax return without filing a payment trace, it will be denied, because the IRS will think that you already received the money.

What If My Income Is Lower Than When I Filed My Last Tax Return
If you had decreased income in 2020 due to starting disability benefits and/or losing a job, you might be eligible for the money but you might not get a third stimulus check in 2021. This might happen if you filed a tax return for 2019 income that’s above the $75,000 or $150,000 thresholds, but you made less income in 2020. You should be able to get the stimulus payment as a rebate if you file a 2020 tax return.
Changes To Disability Benefits For 2022
If you receive SSI or SSDI benefits in 2021, expect to see a change in the monthly payment as of January 2022. The maximum federal SSI payment of $794 in 2021 for an individual and $1,191 for a couple increases to $841 and $1,261 respectively in 2022. You may receive more each month than the federal SSI amount if you live in a state that pays a supplement to residents who qualify for SSI.
The SSDI program does not have a base monthly payment as does SSI. Social Security calculates monthly SSDI payments based, in part, on the amount of your lifetime earnings from working for an employer or through self-employment and paying Social Security taxes on the income.

What About Lost Stimulus Payments
If you did not receive any of the three stimulus payments and believe it was lost, you may request that it be traced by the IRS. There are, however, waiting periods based on the payment method.
You must wait five days from the date of a direct deposit and four weeks for payments made by check. If a lost check went to an address that you no longer live at and the mail was forwarded by the post office, you must wait six weeks from the date the IRS mailed the check. The waiting period for checks mailed to a foreign address is nine weeks from the date of mailing.
