If you didn’t get a stimulus check you were due, you must claim the recovery rebate credit on your 2021 federal tax return.
The IRS sent third stimulus check payments to more than 175 million Americans last year, equaling up to $1,400 for each eligible adult and child. If you didn’t receive a payment you believe you were due — or got less than you were eligible for — you’ll need to claim the Recovery Rebate Credit on your 2021 federal tax return.
Here’s what to do if you didn’t receive or lost your Letter 6475, or if you never received the stimulus money the IRS claims it sent you.
What Happens If It’s Showing The Wrong Bank Account Number
The information taxpayers see in the Get My Payment tool, including account numbers and potential deposit dates, may not display the correct account number since the IRS is working through updates, the agency said Friday.
For those taxpayers who checked Get My Payment and received a response indicating a direct deposit was to be sent to an account they do not recognize, the IRS advises them to continue to monitor their bank accounts for deposits,” the agency added.
H& R Block customers who had their tax refunds deposited into their bank accounts should have their stimulus checks deposited into those accounts, the company said. But customers who used the tax preparers Refund Transfer option for their 2019 tax returns may have had their money sent to a temporary account.
Refund transfer accounts are often created on behalf of taxpayers who want preparation fees taken out of refunds so they dont have to pay preparers upfront. That could be why some customers are seeing the wrong account numbers, experts say.
If you took a Refund Transfer, it may be reflecting that account number. Check your 2019 return to confirm, H& R Block said in a statement. But dont worry we have sent these payments on to the method you chose for Refund Transfer: direct deposit, check, or Emerald Card. The money should be there by the end of the day.

What Information Do I Need About My Stimulus Checks When I File My Taxes
When you received each of your stimulus checks, also known as an Economic Impact Payment, you should have received a Notice 1444. The notice has information about your stimulus check and should be kept with your important tax records like your W-2s or 1099s.
It is possible you received more than one Notice 1444 if you received more than one stimulus check payment. For the first stimulus check you should have received a Notice 1444 and for the second stimulus check you should have received a Notice 1444-B.
When you sit down to file your taxes, these Notice 1444s will be especially helpful if you were eligible, but didnt receive the first or second stimulus check or received only a portion of it. The form includes information like the amount you were issued before any offsets in 2020, which you will need to claim the recovery rebate credit to get any additional stimulus dollars you are owed from the first and second stimulus.
This may seem complicated, but dont worry. TurboTax will guide you through claiming the recovery rebate.
Stimulus Updates To Know For Spring 2022

The coronavirus pandemic brought unprecedented stimulus to American businesses and workers to the tune of trillions of dollars. Stimulus payments came in waves, and as the pandemic lengthened, it almost seemed as if the government would continue to print money forever to bail out the economy. But even as widespread mask mandates and travel restrictions remained in place, the American economy enjoyed a sharp and rapid recovery. Combined with the trillions of dollars of stimulus money in the system, inflation exploded in early 2022 to levels not seen in decades. What does this mean for additional stimulus payments in spring 2022?

How Do I Get My Stimulus Check
Stimulus checks will be based on information from your most recent tax filings, either tax year 2019 or 2018. If you have not filed your 2019 taxes, the IRS will use information from your 2018 tax return. The IRS will use your adjusted gross income information in the most recent tax return filed to determine the amount of your stimulus payment and will deposit your stimulus payment based on the latest direct deposit information. If your tax return does not indicate a direct deposit account, you will receive a paper check.
If you are not required to file and you dont receive Social Security income or Supplemental Security Income you can provide the IRS with the information they require to issue a stimulus payment using TurboTax Stimulus Registration Product.
How To Claim Your Rebate Credit
To get your money, youll need to claim the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit on your 2021 return. Filing electronically can guide you through the form. Dont claim any missing first or second stimulus payments on your 2021 return rather, youll need to file a 2020 return or an amended return to get these payments.
The rebate credit does not count toward your taxable income. And be aware that youll need to fill out your tax return accurately and include the precise amount of stimulus payments the IRS has actually paid you to avoid a delay in your returns processing. If you enter the incorrect amount, it can hold up the processing of your return, Greene-Lewis cautions. The agency will not automatically calculate your 2021 rebate. It is on you, the taxpayer, to claim the Recovery Rebate Credit, Steber says.

I Received A Second Payment But My Spouse Didn’t
There have been cases where a couple submit their tax returns as “married filing jointly,” and both spouses are eligible for a $1,400 stimulus check, but one spouse received a payment and the other did not . This is an error on the IRS’s part. Unfortunately, the spouse who didn’t receive a check will have to claim a Recovery Rebate Credit on his or her 2020 tax return. See below for instructions on claiming the rebate on your tax return.
How To Track The Third Stimulus Check And Find Your Payments Status
We have confirmed with the IRS that they have the accurate banking information from the tax filing for all TurboTax filers, McMahon said in an email. If the taxpayer closed their personal bank account where they received a recent tax refund, the IRS may still try to deposit their stimulus payment there if it is the latest banking information that the IRS has on file for them.
Some H& R Block users, meanwhile, griped that their checks were incorrectly deposited onto Emerald Cards, prepaid debit cards that customers can use to receive their tax refunds, CNBC reported.
But the company says those problems were isolated incidents in a distribution process thats been much smoother than the last one. H& R Block said on Tuesday that all stimulus payments headed to Emerald Cards have been processed.
While there were individuals who had questions or needed a replacement Emerald Card, the systemic issue seen during the second stimulus disbursement was solved and was not an issue this time, an H& R Block spokesperson said.
Those affected by the glitches may have to wait a bit longer to receive the money.
The IRS said any payments sent to closed bank accounts will be returned to the feds and reissued in less than two weeks. Some reissued payments are already on the way, according to the agency.

You Get Federal Benefits On A Direct Express Card
Social Security retirement and disability beneficiaries, railroad retirees, and people who received veterans benefits in 2020 dont need to do anything to get the third stimulus check. The IRS is working with those federal agencies to send the payments to beneficiaries the way they normally get paid, provided they havent filed a tax return.
If your typical method of payment is a Direct Express card, the Get My Payment tool will show a bank account number thats associated with that card. You might not recognize it, but rest assured the money will be loaded onto your Direct Express card.
What About People With Itins
You still need a work-authorizing Social Security Number to be eligible for this stimulus. However, there are important changes since the first round of stimulus checks.
- In the first stimulus rollout, any non-SSN holder on a joint return made everyone on that return ineligible. Big change: The new rounds of stimulus has corrected this problem. If you filed a joint return with a non-SSN holder, you are still eligible for the stimulus. See the below hypotheticals.
- Situation: A single tax filer has an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number but no Social Security number .
- This person is ineligible for the stimulus.

Check The Get My Payment Tool
The IRS website has been uploading data for your third stimulus payment into a tool on its website called Get My Payment. If your information has been updated, you’ll be able to see the date you can expect to receive your stimulus payment, or the date it was deposited or mailed. You should also be able to see whether your money was direct deposited or whether you’ll be receiving the payment by mail.
Many people are seeing a message that says either the IRS doesn’t have enough information yet or you aren’t eligible for the payment. This message doesn’t necessarily mean you aren’t eligible for the payment. This information may be updated this coming weekend.
Here are some of the issues people are seeing, either with their actual deposit or with the Get My Payment tool.
Turbotax H& r Block Customers Say Stimulus Checks Went To Wrong Accounts

Customers have accused the tax-preparation companies of sending their funds to closed bank accounts.
TurboTax and H& R Block customers are voicing their anger after learning that two tax-preparation companies sent their stimulus payments to the wrong accounts.
The news comes after TurboTax announced on Twitter that it had worked with the Internal Revenue Service to ensure the agency had the correct bank account information to distribute the checks. The company also told customers that the payment would be based on information from their latest tax return and that the money would go directly to the bank account or address that the IRS had on file.
In a press release, H& R Block similarly said it understood “how important coronavirus relief benefits, including third stimulus payments, are to millions of American households and small business owners,” providing information on when customers should expect their money.
Still, many customers said they haven’t seen the payments in their accounts. Longtime TurboTax customer Keri Behling told CNBC that she checked the status of her payment on the IRS’s Get My Payment tool but saw that the funds had been deposited in the wrong bank account. Behling said she had the same issue with her second stimulus payment.
Twitter users also took to the social media platform to direct their frustration at the company.

How To Determine If You Have Money Coming To You
Starting in late January, the IRS began sending out information via what it dubs Letter 6475. Its something for taxpayers to watch out for, Steber says. At the top of the letter, which the IRS says it will send through March, youll see the words Your Third Economic Impact Payment. The letter, which the agency did not send out last year, provides details about the total amount you received in third-round stimulus payments in 2021 and includes all payments, even if they were issued at separate times.
Keep in mind that the third-round EIPs were advance payments of the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit. This letter will help Economic Impact Payment recipients determine if they are entitled to and should claim the Recovery Rebate Credit on their 2021 tax returns when they file in 2022, the IRS announced in a.
Eviction Moratorium And Rental Assistance
The Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act of 2021 extends the moratorium on evictions under the CARES Act, designed to protect renters from eviction, until January 31, 2021.
Families struggling to pay rent or with past due rent could be able to get assistance with paying past due rent, future rent payments, as well as utility bills.

If Your Third Stimulus Check Is Lost In The Mail Or Something Else Happens To It Before You Get It You Can Ask The Irs To Trace Your Payment Heres How It Works
Its bad enough if a new sweater you ordered on Amazon gets lost in the mail but youre really going to get mad if the post office loses your $1,400 stimulus check. What do you do then? Or what happens if your bank never receives your direct deposit stimulus payment from the IRS? Are you going to lose that money?
Fortunately, the IRS has a procedure to help. If your third-round stimulus payment is lost, stolen or destroyed, you can ask the IRS to perform a payment trace to see if your check was cashed or direct deposit misdirected. Ultimately, if everything goes smoothly, youll be issued a new payment. Thats the good news.
But theres some less than thrilling news, too. First, you have to wait a certain period of time before starting the process, and then its going to take some time. So, you wont get your stimulus money right away. Second, as with any government request, theres a healthy list of procedures you must follow. Slip up on one of the steps, and you could find yourself in a bureaucratic black hole. But dont worry. While dealing with the IRS can be intimidating, well help you get through the process.

What Is The Recovery Rebate Credit
The Recovery Rebate Credit is available to anyone who was eligible to receive Economic Impact Payments but didn’t receive them, whether in the first round, second round, or both. Anyone who received a partial stimulus check is also eligible for a Recovery Rebate Credit.
Both sets of stimulus checks were considered an advance on the Recovery Rebate Credit. Stimulus payment eligibility was based on 2018 or 2019 tax return information, while rebate credit eligibility is based on 2020 tax return information. It’s possible to qualify for stimulus payments but not the credit or qualify for the credit but not stimulus money.

Getting A Missing Check Can Be Difficult But Worth The Trouble
by Adam Shell, AARP, February 4, 2022
Nobody wants to leave money on the table, especially a stimulus payment from the U.S. government that theyre eligible for but didnt receive. In late January the Internal Revenue Service announced that all third-round stimulus checks had been sent. But the IRS also noted that not all eligible Americans received the full amount theyre entitled to.
The good news? Theres still time to get whats owed to you.
Uncle Sam which issued 175 million third-round payments, totaling over $400 billion, through the end of 2021 reminded people that they can claim any remaining stimulus money theyre entitled to but didnt get by claiming the Recovery Rebate Credit on their 2021 income tax return.
The rebate, which comes as a tax credit of up to $1,400 per eligible person on your 2021 return, will either lower the amount of tax you owe or boost the size of your refund. The golden prize of a tax return is a tax credit, says Mark Steber, chief tax information officer at Jackson Hewitt, a tax preparation service. The Recovery Rebate Credit is a dollar-for-dollar tax-liability offset.
