For example, if you were an individual who earned $90,000 AGI in 2019, you qualified for a reduced stimulus payment in the first round. But for the second round of checks, the maximum AGI for an individual filer is $87,000so youd no longer qualify for any stimulus check.

Tax season, which officially kicked off Monday as the IRS began accepting returns, is likely to stretch the patience of many tax filers, professionals and Internal Revenue Service employees.
IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig is urging taxpayers to take special care this year due to several critical tax law changes in 2021 and ongoing challenges facing the IRS related to the pandemic.
More than 160 million individual tax returns for the 2021 tax year are expected to be filed.
And the IRS continues to deal with a backlog and must “catch up on past tax returns affected by the pandemic,” according to Rettig.
“We worked hard. We tried our best. We didn’t always get it right,” Rettig said in a conference call with the news media.
“We know people are struggling. We want them to know that we’re doing everything we can to help.”
He said IRS employees will do everything possible with the available resources to serve taxpayers this year.
As of Dec. 4, 2021, the IRS said it has a backlog of 6.7 million unprocessed individual returns and 2.6 million unprocessed amended individual returns.

Didn’t Get The First And Second Payments
If you didn’t get a first and second Economic Impact Payment or got less than the full amount, you may be eligible to claim the 2020 Recovery Rebate Credit and must file a 2020 tax return. Alternatively, eligible people who don’t normally have to file a tax return and who didn’t file a 2019 or 2020 tax return or use the Non-Filers tool for stimulus payments last year can use the Child Tax Credit Non-filer Sign-up Tool. Eligible people can expect separate payments for the Recovery Rebate Credit, the third Economic Impact Payment and the advance Child Tax Credit.
Get all the benefits you’re entitled to under the law, including tax credits such as the 2020 Recovery Rebate Credit, the Child Tax Credit, and the Earned Income Tax Credit. Filing a 2020 tax return will also assist the IRS in determining whether someone is eligible for advance payments of the 2021 Child Tax Credit.

Youre Not Sure About Eligibility
Payments being sent out this month are largely based on the most recent tax returns the IRS has available, for 2019. The amount you receive as an initial payment will be based on that data, though you may be eligible for more.
Eligible individuals with an adjusted gross income under $75,000, heads of household under $112,500, and married couples filing jointly under $150,000 are eligible for the full $600 payment. After that, payments phase out with reduced payments up to $87,000 in income for individuals, $124,500 for heads of household, and $174,000 for married couples filing jointly. Children under 17 claimed on 2019 federal tax returns each qualify for an additional $600, while children 17 and older and adult dependents are not eligible.
Even if you dont typically file tax returns, you can still receive your stimulus payment. It wont be issued automatically, but you can get it in the form of the Recovery Rebate Credit when you file your 2020 taxes.
In fact, anyone who believes they didnt receive the full payment for which they are eligible can reconcile the lost amount as a Recovery Rebate Credit on 2020 federal tax returns using Form 1040, the basic form most people will use when they file taxes.
Why Is The Irs Sending Me Letter 6475
“The Economic Impact Payment letters include important information that can help people quickly and accurately file their tax return,” the IRS said in a January release, including personal information — like your name and address — and the total amount sent in your third stimulus payment.
This could include “plus-up” payments, the additional funds the IRS sent to people who were eligible for a larger amount based on their 2019 or 2020 tax returns, or information received from the Social Security Administration, Department of Veterans’ Affairs or the Railroad Retirement Board.
You may have already received a Letter 1444-C, which showed the amount you were paid and how it was delivered, but that’s not what you want to use to prepare your 2021 return.

Will I Still Need To File State Taxes By April 15
Yes. The extended deadline is only for federal income taxes. It doesnt affect a states income tax deadline. But last year, states also eventually pushed back their deadlines after Tax Day 2020 was extended to July 15 due to the pandemic.
Earlier this month, Maryland pushed its state income tax filing deadline to July 15, according to Comptroller Peter Franchot.
Its important that taxpayers check their state to see if they are moving their deadline.
What Income Level Triggers A Payment Reduction
As mentioned above, second stimulus checks will be phased-out for people at certain income levels. Your check will be gradually reduced to zero if you’re single or married filing a separate tax return with a 2019 adjusted gross income above $75,000. If you’re married filing a joint tax return or a qualifying widow, the amount of your second stimulus check will drop if your AGI exceeds $150,000. Why Am I Getting A Letter From The Irs
The IRS has already begun mailing letters to some taxpayers who claimed the 2020 Recovery Rebate Credit and may be getting a different amount than they expected.
Thus far, the IRS has issued 2.5 million letters relating to issues with the Recovery Rebate Credit. That’s 10.4% of almost 24 million individual e-filed tax returns received that claimed this credit, according to Luis Garcia, a spokesperson for the IRS in Detroit.
Through March 26, the IRS has received 85 million individual income tax returns and processed 75.97 million.
“If a correction is needed, there may be a slight delay in processing the return and the IRS will send the taxpayer a letter or notice explaining any change,” the IRS stated.
The IRS will calculate the correct amount, if mistakes relating to the first and second stimulus payments are found on Line 30 of the 1040 or 1040-SR.
Once the correct amount is calculated, the IRS will make the correction and continue processing the return.
What Is The Recovery Rebate Credit
The Recovery Rebate Credit isn’t a new bunch of money. It isn’t to be used for the third stimulus payments, which began being issued in March, either.
The IRS notes that the first and second Economic Impact Payments were technically advance payments of the 2020 Recovery Rebate Credit.
Why should we be surprised, though, that so many people are confused. Most people refer to the money as stimulus cash, not an Economic Impact Payment.
Where exactly a Recovery Rebate Credit fits into the tax picture remains perplexing.
If you’ve receive the full amount for your first and second Economic Impact Payments, you should not state those amounts on your tax return. You don’t need to take any action.
But someone who didnt receive a first or second stimulus payment and qualifies for a payment would need to claim the Recovery Rebate Credit on the 2020 tax return to get stimulus money.
That’s also true if you received less than the full amount of stimulus that you’re eligible for the 2020 credit.
Taxpayers will need to file a 2020 federal income tax return to claim the Recovery Rebate Credit if they didn’t get the money or they received less money than they’re eligible to get, such as if a child’s stimulus wasn’t included in the payout. That’s true even if you dont usually file a tax return.
Not to confuse the matter further, but this latest, third round of stimulus payments is not addressed on your 2020 income tax returns.

Americans who are homeless are eligible for stimulus checks. There isnt a requirement to be a taxpayer to receive one, according to tax experts.
People need to be a U.S. citizen or a resident alien, not a dependent of another taxpayer, and have a valid Social Security number to be eligible for all three stimulus checks.
Homeless Americans will face several obstacles, says Meredith Tucker. First, they need to file a 2020 income tax return, even if they have no income to report.
The second obstacle is the fact that many homeless do not have bank accounts where the IRS can direct deposit their payments which means theyll be waiting on checks or debit cards, Tucker added.
The IRS does have a FreeFile program available that can be accessed by computer and smartphone, which means homeless individuals will need to arrange computer access through community agencies, libraries or friends, according to Tucker.
For the first stimulus, people were able to use the IRS non-filers tool to register at IRS.gov, but the tool is no longer active. If people arent able to register on this tool, they will have to file a tax return to claim the Recovery Rebate Credit for the first two stimulus checks that were distributed last year.
If you dont have a permanent address, your stimulus can be sent to a local post office, homeless shelter, or a place of worship. People should use an address of a local shelter, friend or family member, the Federal Trade Commission recommends.
