You will need to file a tax return for Tax Year 2020 . The deadline to file your taxes this year was May 17, 2021. The tax filing extension deadline is October 15, 2021.

If you missed the filing deadline, you can still file your tax return to get your first and second stimulus checks. If you dont owe taxes, there is no penalty for filing late. If you owe taxes, you may be subject to penalties and fines for not filing or not paying taxes. The government may reduce your tax refund to pay for any taxes you owe and other federal and state debts.

You Received A Stimulus Check For Someone Who Died

There is also some confusion on whether or not you would need to pay back the IRS if you received a stimulus check for a deceased spouse.

In particular, this has been the case under the first federal stimulus package , worth up to $1,200 per eligible adult.

That stimulus round was based on 2018 and 2019 tax returns.

But If your spouse died in those years and you received two checks you might have to repay one back.

I knew a lot of people whose spouse’s died in 2018, and when they filed their 2018 return in 2019, they filed as married filing jointly , Kari Brummond, a tax preparer at TaxCure, told The Sun earlier this year.

She added that those couples including deceased spouses received payments most frequently in the first round of the federal stimulus package but the IRS has not reached out to that group.

So, in that event, its not clear if the IRS will reach out to you but be aware it could happen.

If any of the above reasons applies to you, then the IRS may ask you to return your coronavirus stimulus check. The agency generally sends a letter, detailing what you need to do to return the stimulus money.

For instance, if you already cashed the stimulus check amount, then you need to return the money through a check or money order. And, if you still have the original stimulus check, then you need to write VOID on the back of the check and send it back to the IRS.

If you dont agree with the IRS, you can also file a dispute. The quickest way to contact the agency is to send a letter to the IRS office in your region.

A point to note is that the IRS will contact you regarding an overpayment by sending a letter to your last known address. This means if anyone contacts you via phone, text, or email posing to be from the IRS, then they are likely to be fraudsters. Always remember that the IRS never calls, texts, or emails unless it is in response to a message you already sent to the agency.

How Your Return Can Help With A $1400 Stimulus Check

Since March, the government has been deploying new batches of stimulus checks weekly.

Each of those rounds has included payments to people that were prompted by the IRS processing their 2020 tax returns.

That goes for people who do not typically file tax returns, but did so this year in order to get their $1,400 checks. Once those forms were processed, the IRS sent their payments.

In addition, people who already received their third stimulus check, and who are due more money after the IRS completed their latest return, received “plus-up” payments from the agency.

That could happen if their financial circumstances changed since their 2019 return, such as their income declining last year.

Not everyone needs to file a federal return in order to get their stimulus checks. If you receive federal benefits and do not typically file, you should get your payment automatically. However, you may want to file a return in order to submit information on eligible dependents.

In addition, if you used the IRS online non-filer tool last year, you should not have to resubmit your information.

The non-filer tool has not been reopened this year. Instead, the IRS has urged people who it does not already have on record to file tax returns, which can help the agency evaluate whether or not you may be eligible for other tax credits.

What Can I Do If I Have Not Received My Eip Money By Those Deadlines

If you have not received all or some portion of your Economic Impact Payments by the deadlines above, you will have to file a 2020 tax return and claim these amounts. You claim them on line 30 of the 2020 Form 1040 as a “Recovery Rebate Credit“. This is another name for the EIP stimulus payments. If you did not get all or a portion of the EIP payments in advance, then you can claim them on line 30 of your tax return for 2020.

But that might not be the case, as the math error has caused some confusion amongst taxpayers who have received notices.

As a result of the error, the IRS will typically make an adjustment on the balance due or potentially shrink the refund.

But the problem is the IRS isnt sending vital information, according to experts.

One of the biggest issues were having is the reconciliation of stimulus payments, Dan Herron, a Certified Financial Planner and CPA with Elemental Wealth Advisors, told CNBC last year.

The IRS is sending out balance due notices with no calculation or explanation analysis.

There is also another reason why you might have gotten a stimulus check when you shouldnt have.

I knew a lot of people whose spouse’s died in 2018, and when they filed their 2018 return in 2019, they filed as married filing jointly , Mrs Brummond said.

She added that those couples including deceased spouses received payments more frequently in the first round of the federal stimulus package but the IRS has not reached out to that group.

So, in that event, you might not have to pay it back yet.

Some People Who Receive A Third Stimulus Check Are Required To Send It Back To The Irs Others Can Return It Voluntarily

And most Americans who don’t really need a helping hand can certainly find something to do with an extra $1,400. So, why would anyone return their third stimulus check to the IRS?

For one group of people, it’s because the IRS is telling them to send it back. They’re not eligible for a payment in the first place, so that makes sense . There’s another group of Americans who will want to return their stimulus check because they can’t otherwise cash it. A nonresident alien is not eligible for a third stimulus check. Generally, a “nonresident alien” is not a U.S. citizen, doesn’t have a green card, and is not physically present in the U.S. for the required amount of time.

Your Money, Your Future: How to return stimulus checks sent to dead people

You will most likely get the Recovery Rebate Credit as part of your tax refunds. If you electronically file your tax return, you will likely receive your refund within 3 weeks. If you mail your return, it can take at least 8 weeks to receive your refund.

Claiming the Recovery Rebate Credit will not delay your tax refund. However, if you dont claim the correct amount of the Recovery Rebate Credit, your refund may be delayed while the IRS corrects the error on your return. The IRS will send you a notice of any changes made to your return.

You can check on the status of your refund using the IRS Check My Refund Status tool.

You Received A Check Addressed To A Deceased Relative

Believe it or not, people who are no longer living have been receiving stimulus money.

Andrew Hudson, a 25-year-old attorney in Tampa, says his grandmother, Nancy Coulterwho has been deceased for nearly a yearhad a check written out to her from the IRS. It was sent to his mothers house, who was listed on his grandmothers estate.

Hudson’s grandmother, who passed away nearly a year ago, was sent a stimulus check in the mail.

Its a situation shared by a surprising amount of Americans. Since the IRS is sending stimulus money out based on 2018 or 2019 tax returns for those who havent filed yet this year, its possible those people have died since the taxes were filed. Plus, the IRS has been under immense pressure to get the stimulus money out to some 175 million people as quickly as it can. All of that, combined with the fact that the Social Security Administrations Death Master File is not updated in real time, means people who are no longer living are getting stimulus money anyway.

This doesnt mean its up for grabs by you or your family, though. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin indicated that any funds sent to those who shouldnt receive stimulus money, including deceased people, should be sent back to the IRS immediately.

    How Do I Get It

    • The stimulus payments will be processed by the IRS.
    • If you have already filed a 2019 tax return, you will get the stimulus payment automatically. You will receive it in the same form as your tax refund. If you requested direct deposit, then the stimulus will be direct deposited. If you requested a paper check, then the stimulus will be mailed to the same address on your 2019 tax return.
    • If you entered your information into the IRS non-filer portal earlier in 2020, you will get the stimulus payment automatically. You do not have to do anything.
    • If you receive one of the following benefits, you will get the stimulus payment automatically. You do not have to do anything.
    • Social Security
  • Note: Instead of a check, some people will get a debit card mailed to them in a white envelope. The envelope has the U.S. Department of the Treasury seal on it. See this factsheet to learn what the debit card looks like and how to use it.
