When Will I Get A Second Stimulus Check
Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin promises that the next round of checks will start going out the week of December 28. Direct-deposit payments generally arrive the fastest, while mailed paper checks may not arrive until late January.
What can I do to get my second stimulus check fast?
Youll receive your payment fastest using one of these methods:
- Direct deposit. Get your check direct deposited to your bank account. Check the IRS Payment Tool to make sure the IRS has your correct direct deposit details.
- Prepaid card. Prepaid cards such as Netspend or H& R Block Emerald can help you get your money up to two days faster than with direct deposit.
If you dont sign up for direct deposit using one of these methods, youll get your second stimulus payment by mail either as a paper check or prepaid debit card. The prepaid debit card comes in a plain envelope marked Money Network Cardholder Services.
Some Had To Wait For Longer For Their Stimulus Checks
The first batch of stimulus checks went out after March 12 and people began receiving them in their accounts within days. But others have had to wait for weeks and even months for their payments.
Initially, the IRS sent payments based on the 2019 and later the 2020 tax returns. They had all the relevant details and were able to quickly check their eligibility and knew where to send the payment.
But it had been a long wait for many who werent regular tax filers. Even the last batch contains 900,000 payments to people who have never filed tax returns before. 1.1 million were plus-up payments for those who qualified for a larger amount based on revised calculations.
1.2 million of the payments went through direct bank transfers and the remaining 1.1 million went through the US postal service as prepaid debit cards or paper checks.

Nonfilers Are Likely Eligible To Get Both Of The 2020 Stimulus Checks

Most nonfilers fall below the income limits stipulated by each stimulus package and would be eligible for the full amount in each round — $1,200 per person under the 2020 CARES Act passed in March 2020, and $600 per person under the December 2020 stimulus bill. Find the full eligibility rules for each stimulus check here.
If you receive SSI or SSDI, you should have received at least a portion of both of those stimulus checks automatically — the IRS obtained the names of Social Security recipients and SSI beneficiaries from the Social Security Administration in the spring and made the payments to them automatically, according to Janet Holtzblatt, a senior fellow at the Urban-Brookings Tax Policy Center.
If either of your checks are missing, however, you’ll have to take the extra steps below.

What Can I Do If I Have Not Received My Eip Money By Those Deadlines
If you have not received all or some portion of your Economic Impact Payments by the deadlines above, you will have to file a 2020 tax return and claim these amounts. You claim them on line 30 of the 2020 Form 1040 as a “Recovery Rebate Credit“. This is another name for the EIP stimulus payments. If you did not get all or a portion of the EIP payments in advance, then you can claim them on line 30 of your tax return for 2020.
How Do I Claim The Economic Recovery Rebate Credit
If you were eligible for an Economic Impact Payment but didnt receive one, or if the payment you received was less than you expected based on your eligibility criteria, you can claim the difference on your 2020 tax return filed in 2021. Some Federal Benefit Recipients Already Have Received An Economic Impact Payment
The IRS emphasizes that federal benefit recipients in these groups who file tax returns already started to receive Economic Impact Payments earlier this month, along with other taxpayers.
Because some federal benefit recipients do not file tax returns, the IRS did not have in its tax systems the current information needed to generate the Economic Impact Payments. Last year, the IRS took the unprecedented step to receive and review data from other federal agencies and use that data to deliver payments automatically to these recipients. This action which had never occurred in previous stimulus efforts minimized risk and burdens for the American public during the pandemic. Due to regular changes in the federal benefits population, the IRS needed to receive updated information this month from other government agencies. With these critical updates, eligible federal benefit recipients who don’t normally file an income tax return will get a payment automatically in the next few weeks.
Making these automatic payments to federal beneficiaries involves a complex, multi-step process to handle recipient data from the other agencies. For the first round of Economic Impact Payments last year, recipients in these groups received payments within four to six weeks after the CARES Act was signed into law. For the American Rescue Plan signed March 11, the IRS projects that it is on track to deliver Economic Impact Payments to federal beneficiaries at the same or faster speed.

The tool is closed and it will not be available for other payments including the second Economic Impact Payment or the Recovery Rebate Credit. Economic Impact Payments were an advance payment of the Recovery Rebate Credit. You may be eligible to claim the credit by filing a 2020 1040 or 1040-SR for free using the IRS Free File program. These free tax software programs can be used by people who are not normally required to file tax returns but are eligible to claim the credit.
If you submitted your information using this tool by November 21, 2020 or by mail for the first Economic Impact Payment, IRS will use that information to send you the second Economic Impact Payment, if youre eligible.
You can check your payment status with Get My Payment. Go to IRS.gov Coronavirus Tax Relief and Economic Impact Payments for more information.
Will My 2020 Tax Return Affect My Payment Amount
In some cases, yes. If youre entitled to a larger payment based on your 2020 tax return compared to your 2019 return, you will be eligible to receive the difference as a tax credit. If you lost your job or saw your income drop this year during the pandemic, this situation may apply to you. But you wont see any additional funds via a tax credit until 2020 returns are filed this spring.
If the stimulus payment you are due is lower based on your 2020 income, you get to keep the higher payment that was sent to you based on your 2019 return.

The $900 billion stimulus bill required the IRS to send all second stimulus checks by January 15, 2021. Eligible recipients who did not get a payment by the cutoff date now have to claim their money as a Recovery Rebate Credit on their 2020 tax return .

If I Owe Back Child Support Will I Still Get A Payment
Yes. If you owe back child support, your stimulus payment cannot be garnished to pay that debt. The same is true if you owe federal or state debts: your stimulus payment cannot be garnished. Your payment wont be levied by the IRS, either.
This is different from the CARES Act, which specified that if you owed back child support, your stimulus payment would be garnished.

Non Filer For 1st And 2nd Stimulus Checks Mix Up
Back when the 1st stimulus check was being sent out, I was eligible and did the non-filers tax form. I ended up making a mistake on it and needed to do an amended tax return, which did not process / complete until about Dec of 2020. I did the online Turbo tax form and it said I able to get the $1,200 credit for last year. Now that the 2nd one came out, I realize that I am not going to get it direct deposited or mailed a check because of my tax amendment mix-up.
That makes sense because it was a big mess when they initiated it. Anyways, I never could find an option for requesting the 2nd / $600 payment on the Turbo tax online form. Is this something that Turbo tax needs to update with the software in order to enter it in? I have asked other people online and they said that I would be able to do it, but they did not mention what I had to do to enter it in.
All I can think of besides the software being updated is to go in and speak to someone who can do my taxes. Just seeing if anyone has any idea one what I might do to fix this. Thank you.
Assistance In Accessing Payments Can Increase Receipt

To receive a payment this year, individuals not receiving a federally administrated benefit must provide their information to the IRS no later than October 15 if filing a tax return or by November 21 if using the simplified IRS online form for people who arent required to file a tax return, known as the Non-Filer tool. The tool requires a user to create an online account, enter personal information , verify their email address, and submit the form. Some individuals who do not typically file a return may find this process hard to complete without assistance even during normal times, and especially during a pandemic.
While the simplified form requires much less information than filing a full tax return, individuals must have internet access, an email address, a direct deposit account or an address to which the payment can be delivered, and facility with the online form and account. For individuals with little or no income, disabilities, or limited contact with public agencies, any of these elements may be challenging.
