As a part of the Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act recently signed into law, the IRS announced that they have begun issuing a second round of stimulus payments to eligible tax filers.

Here are answers to some of the top questions you may have about the second stimulus checks:

If you have an adjusted gross income of up to $75,000 , you could be eligible for the full amount of the recovery rebate $600 for eligible individuals, $1,200 for joint taxpayers, and an additional $600 for each dependent child under 17.

*Note, adjusted gross income is your gross income like wages, salaries, or interest minus adjustments for eligible deductions like student loan interest or your IRA deduction. Your AGI can be found on line 8b of your 2019 Form 1040.

The same eligibility rules apply to the second stimulus payment as the first one. You must have a valid Social Security number, and you cant have been claimed as a dependent on someone elses 2019 tax return.

You can also send a fax or mail a completed Form 3911, a Taxpayer Statement Regarding Refund form to the IRS.

The agency does note that if you filed a married joint return, you can’t start the trace through the automated system.

You Didn’t File A 2019 Or 2020 Tax Return

Generally, the IRS will look at your 2019 or 2020 tax return to see if you’re eligible for a third stimulus check and, if so, to determine the amount of your check. If you didn’t file a 2019 or 2020 return , then the IRS is stuck. It doesn’t have the information it needs to send you a payment readily available.

For some people, the IRS got the necessary information from another federal agency that is paying you benefits . After it got the information, the IRS was able to start sending payments to those beneficiaries but waiting to get the data caused a delay. For example, the IRS just recently started sending payments to millions of federal beneficiaries.

If the IRS isn’t able to get the information needed to process your payment , then you’ll have to claim the amount you’re entitled to as a Recovery Rebate credit on your 2021 tax return. But there’s an easy way to avoid this simply file a 2020 tax return, even if you don’t have to.

There’s still plenty of time to file a 2020 return. The IRS pushed back this year’s return filing deadline from April 15 to May 17, 2021, so you have an additional month to get your 2020 return to the IRS. The tax agency has until the end of the year to send out third-round stimulus payments, so you can still get a check if you haven’t filed yet it will just take longer for you to get it.

Where Is My Second Stimulus Check

All second stimulus checks were issued by January 15, 2021. If you didnt get a second stimulus check by then , you can claim your second stimulus check as the Recovery Rebate Tax Credit on your 2020 tax return or use GetCTC.org if you dont have a filing requirement.

  • Notice 1444-C is the notice for the third payment which started going out in March 2021. The C just means that its the third payment.

Each notice is supposed to arrive within 15 days of your payment. With delays at the IRS, USPS, and other federal government agencies due to COVID-19, delivery times have not been consistent.

If you have direct deposit information on file with the IRS you will receive your payment via direct deposit. What if you already received your first and second stimulus checks, but it was for the wrong amount? What if you graduated from college in 2020 and arent a dependent anymore?

For the first and second stimulus payments, if your situation changed, youll claim the rest youre owed through the Recovery Rebate credit on your 2020 return. For the third , youll wait to claim the credit on your 2021 tax return.

The IRS understood the need to get stimulus payments out quickly. As a result, some taxpayers have found differences in the amount they should have received due to tax filing changes and income changes.

The IRS has finished sending out all the third-round stimulus checks. Learn how to make sure that you got all your money.

Every American who got a third stimulus check should receive IRS Letter 6475 in the mail.

On Wednesday, the IRS announced that it had disbursed all of the third-round stimulus checks from the American Rescue Plan, but you still could receive more stimulus money. One critical IRS notice you’ll need to get any additional money is Letter 6475, Your Third Economic ImpactPayment. It’s the official record of your “Economic Impact Payment,” or stimulus money, for 2021.

Most Americans received their full stimulus check payments in 2021. However, if you’re not sure, Letter 6475 will “help Economic Impact Payment recipients determine if they are entitled to and should claim the recovery rebate credit on their 2021 tax returns when they file in 2022,” according to the IRS.

In that third round of Economic Impact Payments, the IRS sent Americans more than 160 million checks of up to $1,400 per adult, plus additional amounts of $1,400 for each dependent. If you had a new baby or added a qualified child to your family in 2021, you’re eligible for an additional $1,400 for each new child.

Additionally, the third stimulus payment was based on 2020 taxes. If you earned less money in 2021, you’ll need Letter 6475 to claim any additional money from an adjusted recovery rebate tax credit on this year’s tax return.

Do You Need Notice 1444 Or 1444

How you can get your stimulus money if you never received a check or payment

The purpose of Notice 1444 is to help you to accurately file your 2020 federal tax return. When tax software or an accountant asks for your Notice 1444 to report any payment, its to check whether you received the relief payments and how much you got. If you dont have your Notice 1444 but do know how much you received, your tax return wont be inaccurate if you enter the amount that you received.

Keep all information that you do have such as the cover letter for your check or debit card. If you received a direct deposit, save that bank statement.

The IRS knows how much you received since they processed the payments. You shouldnt have to worry about them challenging the amount you entered if you entered it correctly. However, there is a chance that information may not match up in their system. For example, if you never received a payment they sent or if you had changes in your eligible dependents. Save your records in case of an audit just like you would save any other tax records.

From the comments, it looks some like some tax preparers are refusing to file your return without the notice. I have not seen any guidance specifically requiring it, and it appears that they are being overly cautions regarding general IRS due diligence requirements. This is a conversation you need to have with your tax preparer.

You Might Not Get Your Payment By Jan 15

Use the IRS Get My Payment tool to track the status of your payment. If you receive a Payment Status #2 Not Available notice, you should prepare for a longer wait: your payment will likely not be processed by Jan. 15.

Instead, youll need to claim the Recovery Rebate Credit on your 2020 tax returns. If you end up owing money on your 2020 taxes, it will reduce the amount you owe, Cagan says. If you get a refund, youll get a bigger refund. If you have zero income, youll just get the full amount back.

The IRS website has been uploading data for your third stimulus payment into a tool on its website called Get My Payment. If your information has been updated, you’ll be able to see the date you can expect to receive your stimulus payment, or the date it was deposited or mailed. You should also be able to see whether your money was direct deposited or whether you’ll be receiving the payment by mail.
