If I Owe Back Child Support Will I Still Get A Payment
Yes. If you or your spouse owes back child support, your stimulus payment cannot be garnished to pay that debt. The same is true if you owe federal or state debts: your stimulus payment cannot be garnished. Your payment wont be levied by the IRS, either.
Although the second and third stimulus payments cant be garnished for unpaid child support, the amounts can be garnished if you dont get money up front and need to claim the credits on your taxes.
Can I Contact The Irs For Additional Help With My Taxes
While you could try calling the IRS to check your status, the agency’s live phone assistance is extremely limited. You shouldn’t file a second tax return or contact the IRS about the status of your return.
The IRS is directing people to the Let Us Help You page on its website for more information. It also advises taxpayers to get in-person help at Taxpayer Assistance Centers. You can contact your local IRS office or call to make an appointment: 844-545-5640. You can also contact the Taxpayer Advocate Service if you’re eligible for assistance by calling them: 877-777-4778.
Though the chances of getting live assistance are slim, the IRS says you should only call the agency directly if it’s been 21 days or more since you filed your taxes online, or if the Where’s My Refund tool tells you to contact the IRS. You can call 800-829-1040 or 800-829-8374 during regular business hours.
I Filed My Taxes In February But I Wasnt In The First Payment Round Whats Up With That
The way the IRS determines who gets their money when is a mystery to everyone but the IRS. Were not sure why some people got their payments right away, why some people have to wait, and why some people arent getting answers through the Get My Payment tool yet.
If you filed your 2020 taxes, one thing to keep in mind is that the IRS may not have processed your return yet. The IRS is still working through a backlog of 2019 tax returns due to the shutdown during the pandemic last year, along with processing 2020 returns.

If you cannot access the account where the stimulus check is deposited, Money recommends trying to contact the bank to recover your password and get access to the money.
USA Today, however, reports that for some people, the issue is not accessing the account but finding which account it was even sent to. The outlet writes, many people expressed concern when the government website said the cash was sent to a bank account that didnt seem to belong to them.
When USA Today reached out to IRS spokeswoman Jodie Reynolds, she said she hadnt heard anything about stimulus checks being deposited into the wrong bank accounts and would look into the matter.
Douglas Johnson Jr., a finance and banking consultant based in Santa Monica, said those who believe their money has been sent to the wrong account should contact the IRS through the agencys website and report the problem.

Irs Statement Update On Economic Impact Payments
The IRS continues to take additional steps to get the second Economic Impact Payments to more eligible taxpayers. In addition to redirecting payments to the proper account in recent days to a larger group of people , the IRS and tax industry partners worked over the weekend to help a smaller set of impacted taxpayers.
- Reissuance of Certain Economic Impact Payments – Following extensive work and discussions with our industry partners, the IRS will reissue payments for taxpayers who did not receive the second Economic Impact Payment because the temporary bank accounts identified in our records were closed.
- Taxpayers Impacted – This impacts some taxpayers when tax preparation providers were unable to deliver funds to people as a result of IRS guidance, and they are now waiting for the IRS to re-process payments related to these accounts.
- Payment Directly from the Government to be Received Soon – Payments will be issued directly from the government later this month , within weeks of the law being enacted. For people in this group, payments may be issued either as a paper check or as a direct deposit.
- No Action Required by Taxpayers to Receive these Payments – Taxpayers do not need to take any action or call the payments will be made automatically.
The IRS regrets the inconvenience and greatly appreciates the assistance of our tax industry partners in helping accelerate a resolution of this issue.

When A Stimulus Check Goes To The ‘wrong’ Bank Account
Say your account on file with the IRS is still active, but its not your preferred account because you owe fees or its so old that you forgot your password. Unfortunately theres little you can do if the IRS has already begun processing your stimulus payment.
If it goes to an account which is still active, thats where its going to go and its going to be your responsibility to figure out what to do, Howard Gleckman, a senior fellow at the Urban-Brookings Tax Policy Center told Money.
When it comes to accounts with debt, some banks are being more lenient than others, as outlined by the Prospect: JPMorgan Chase, for example, said theyre willing to send the check back to the government. Some states have put laws in place preventing banks from withdrawing from your stimulus checks, so look up your states stance on garnishment orders.
If the stimulus payment goes to an account you cant access for some reason, your best bet is to try and contact the bank to recover your password and get access to the money.

Stimulus Checks Deposited Into Unknown Accounts For Some People
CINCINNATI – The second round of stimulus checks from the IRS are out, but some people have said their money went to the wrong place.
Some FOX19 NOW viewers have sent screenshots showing their stimulus check was deposited into a bank account they say they dont recognize.
I was supposed to get it on Monday, and thats when I found out that they put it in the wrong account yesterday, says Delhi resident Dan Overberg.
The issue appears to impact H& R Block customers. On the companys Twitter page, H& R Block notes that users may see their stimulus check was submitted to a different account.
H& R Block understands stimulus checks are vitally important for millions of Americans. The IRS determines where second stimulus payments were sent, and in some cases, money was sent to a different account than the first stimulus payment last spring.
H& R Block
On Monday, H& R Block said it would be sending the stimulus to customers via their preferred method by the end of the day. Some people tell FOX19 NOW that still has not happened.
With so many others experiencing the same issues, Overberg says he and his family have spent a combined 12 hours on the phone looking for answers.
I called our local office, and they said, we have nothing to do with it, youve got to call your bank, Overberg says. I keep getting the runaround.

Closed Bank Account Stimulus Check Deposits

The IRS has confirmed that if it attempts to use direct deposit but an account is closed, the bank will reject the deposit, and the IRS will mail you a paper check with the address it has on file for you. However, paper checks may take weeks longer to arrive than direct deposits. Regardless of how the IRS sends your stimulus payment, it will also send a letter to the mailing address it has on file for you to let you know how the payment was made and how to report any failure to receive the payment, according to its website.
While there was some flexibility to update bank accounts for the first stimulus payment, the second stimulus payment has to be paid out by mid-January 2021 so existing bank account information is being used. If you dont get your stimulus check by direct deposit, check or debit card by February the IRS is recommending you claim the stimulus payment via your 2020 tax return.

Still No Stimulus Check One Of These Payment Problems Could Be The Culprit
Here are nine possible reasons your stimulus check hasn’t arrived with any of the payment waves the IRS has sent.
Third stimulus check delivery has been going on for weeks. What does it mean if your payment still hasn’t arrived? And what can you do about it?
The IRS sent out another wave of third stimulus checks this week — did you get yours? If not, there could be an issue holding up your $1,400 payment. Before you do anything, check the IRS tracker tool to see what it says. If it shows your stimulus check should’ve arrived days or even weeks ago, or it just doesn’t arrive at all, there’s likely a problem that needs to be addressed.
Make sure you’re triple-checking every piece of mail that comes to your house — that’s how your payment will arrive unless you receive SSI, SSDI or veterans benefits, or you’re expecting a “plus-up” payment. It’ll come in the mail as an EIP debit card or paper check, which you can track with the USPS. Also, double-check that you’re eligible and that you’re receiving the right amount — for instance, you should get more money if you had a baby, claim newly qualified dependents or are part of a mixed-citizenship status family.

Stimulus Check Payment Issues
Several readers have noted that they are seeing their checks getting deposited in the wrong accounts based on the IRS GMP tools payment status. This error was discovered when eligible recipients saw the last four digits of their bank account numbers were incorrect. This same error had occurred with prior stimulus payments and was primarily due to data glitches from third-party tax preparers to the IRS. When this happened with prior payments the IRS had to send the payment via a paper check in the mail, which could take several weeks.
If you dont get your check by the end of April and dont get notice of a paper check you will have to claim the stimulus payment as a recovery rebate credit in your 2021 tax return.

What To Do If Your Stimulus Check Was Deposited Into The Wrong Bank Account
Congress passed the $1.9 trillion relief package last week, including the stimulus payments which will see individuals earning $75,000 or less receiving $1,400 each, while couples with four children can receive $5,600.
People with direct deposit accounts with the IRS, from tax returns or previous stimulus payments, for example, are more likely to receive their stimulus checks more quickly.
While some Americans have already received their stimulus checks, customers of certain banks will have to wait until Wednesday, March 17, to receive their $1,400.
However, there may be another reason why some people aren’t receiving their stimulus checks as quickly as they think they should.
There are reports of some people seeing the wrong bank account number on the IRS website when checking their payment status, and although this may be very worrying to see, it doesn’t mean that the money is lost.
The IRS gets your bank account information from either your 2019 tax return, the information you entered on your non-filer registration in 2020, the information you entered on the Get My Payment tool before December 22, 2020, or through a federal agency that provides you benefits, including the Social Security Administration, Veteran Affairs, or the Railroad Retirement Board.

Irs Again Depositing Stimulus Payments In Wrong Bank Accounts
The Internal Revenue Service is once again depositing the latest round of Economic Impact Payments in the wrong bank accounts in a replay of problems experienced last year by many taxpayers.
The problem stems in part from tax preparation companies that used temporary bank accounts in previous years where taxpayers could receive their tax refunds, while the tax prep companies took a portion of the refund for payment. The temporary bank accounts were later closed, but the IRS relied on the old information it had on file for those bank accounts when it began making direct deposits this week of the latest round of stimulus payments.
The banks have to send back the deposits to the IRS, and taxpayers will have to update their information with the IRS directly. However, some are already complaining about the problems in receiving the much-needed payments in the midst of the economic crisis from the pandemic. They have been checking the IRSs online Get My Payment tool and finding that the deposits went to bank accounts that dont match their own. In a FAQ page about the Get My Payment tool, the IRS advises taxpayers that they may need to wait until later this year to claim a tax credit for the missing stimulus payment, but for those who are desperate for funds to pay their bills as soon as possible, that will be a long wait.
You Used Turbotax’s Or H& r Block’s Refund Transfer
During the last rollout of stimulus checks in January, the IRS erroneously sent stimulus payments to holding accounts at TurboTax’s and H& R Block’s partner banks. These accounts are used when a customer opts into refund transfer, meaning they give the company permission to take its fees out of their refund before sending the refund to their bank account.
Both TurboTax and H& R Block said they provided the IRS with the correct bank accounts for customers this time around, so the mishap shouldn’t happen again but it’s not guaranteed.
In any case, if a payment bounces back to the IRS then it will be re-sent in the mail as a paper check or prepaid debit card.
