Farmworkers and meatpackers are entitled to up to $600 per person for pandemic health and safety-related costs, including personal protective equipment, child care and expenses related to testing or quarantining, the USDA says.

Approximately $20 million of the $700 million pool of money will be set aside for grocery store employees. However, the amount individuals in that industry will receive is not yet known.

“Our farmworkers, meatpacking workers and grocery workers overcame unprecedented challenges and took on significant personal risk to ensure Americans could feed and sustain their families throughout the pandemic, says Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, in a news release.

“They deserve recognition for their resilience and financial support for their efforts to meet personal and family needs while continuing to provide essential services,” Vilsack says.

When it comes time to apply in 2022, workers must show proof of employment and provide self-certification of their pandemic-related expenses. Itemized receipts wont be necessary, according to Agriculture Department guidance.

Funding For Essential Workers Who Keep America Fed

Farm and meatpacking plant workers will be able to receive money through a new Farm and Food Workers Relief grant program, announced last fall.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture says grocery workers also will be eligible for some of the cash.

The Americans who’ll qualify for the payments all who work in food-related industries, where sheltering in place or working from home during the pandemic has not been possible.

State agencies, nonprofits and tribal entities have until Feb. 8 to apply to the government for the funds, which those groups will receive in June. Workers will apply to those groups to receive their payments.

Child Tax Credit Updates

Most eligible families have been able to receive half of their 2021 child tax credit money in advance due to changes in 2021 to the US Child Tax Credit system. This money came in prior to the other half of the sum that will arrive in April of 2022 during tax season, with each of these monthly payments having gone out on the 15th day of the month. So, the latest round of payments were due on December 15.

Child Tax Credit highlights

Following some confusion over the payment of Child Tax Credit, the White House and Treasury Department have worked together with Code for America to launch a new online website through which Americans can apply for the expanded child tax credit system.

Those applying would have had to have done so by October 15, which is when the fourth check should start to be sent out. Below, you will be able to see the latest updates on the Child Tax Credit scheme that is helping US families.

Stimulus Check Update: How Eligible Americans Can Claim Money In 2022

As the demand for a fourth stimulus check increases, there are some Americans who still havent received the third payment that was slated for 2021.

In March, millions of Americans received up to $1,400 in stimulus checks as a part of the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan. The IRS was tasked with sending out the payments and had until Dec. 31 to pay eligible Americans.

Now that the new year has arrived, there are still eligible Americans who havent been paid their stimulus check from the government. However, those eligible can still receive the payment by claiming the money on their 2021 tax return.

If youre eligible, youll need to file a 2021 tax return, even if you dont usually file a tax return, the IRS said in a statement.

Under the Recovery Rebate Credit, a person can list if they received stimulus money and those who were not paid can note how much their payment should have been.

Since tax returns from 2020 or 2019 were used to determine eligibility for stimulus checks in 2021, people who experienced a decrease in income could be owed more money.

Those who had babies in 2021 can also use the Recovery Rebate Credit Worksheet to claim their childs stimulus check and may also be eligible to receive the full tax credit if they havent been receiving the monthly advance payments that started in July.

News of eligible Americans without stimulus checks comes amid reports Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev received a $1,400 payment.

Why A Fourth Stimulus Check Unlikely

Stimulus check latest updates California Governor Newsom ...

All of this voiced support keeps alive the possibility of another round of stimulus checks or recurring stimulus checks. It doesnt make either of them likely, however. And there are a many reasons why.

Vaccinations are progressing steadily. Adults and those at least 16 years old are now eligible to be inoculated in all 50 states. Some places allow vaccinations for those as young as 12. Three different options are available to the public since Aprils pause on the Johnson & Johnson vaccine was lifted. Actually putting needles in arms still takes time, even with supply caught up to demand. Americans have received over 297 million doses, with 50.9 percent of the population having received at least one dose and 41.2 percent completely vaccinated. Vaccination numbers continue to increase at a rate of about one million doses per day. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently advised that the fully vaccinated can forgo masks and social distancing in most indoor and outdoor settings.

In Nersisyans view, lets see if people still need more assistance. Lets see how the economys doing as things keep opening up and the vaccination rates go up and things go back to some sense of normal. And lets see where the unemployment numbers are. Are people still running behind on their rents and mortgages and so on? And based on that, lets decide whether we need to inject more spending into the economy. I would say wait and see right now.

Don’t Miss: When Is The Third Stimulus Checks Coming Out

How Much Does The Third Stimulus Check Pay

The $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief plan includes a third round of $1,400 stimulus payments, topping off the $600 checks that were , and adding up to $2,000.

Congress passed the coronavirus relief plan with targeted income limits for maximum stimulus payments to individual taxpayers earning under $75,000 and joint filers making up to $150,000. But whereas the first and second rounds of stimulus payments phased out checks on a sliding scale of $5 for every $100 over the income limit, the new plan cuts off high earners at $80,000 for individuals and $160,000 for couples.

Eligibility for the third stimulus checks is based on your tax filing status. For more information on who qualifies for a third stimulus check, our tables below will help you calculate different payment options.

A Fourth Stimulus Payment Is Currently Not In Any Proposal

Researchers have found that the first three stimulus checks helped reduce hardships like food insufficiency and financial instability. So far, during the pandemic, eligible adults have received a max of $3,200 and children have received up to $2,500. For struggling families, that’s not enough to bounce back from lost wages and benefits.

Since the American Rescue Plan, the White House has proposed several packages, including the American Jobs Plan and the Build Back Better agenda, but those don’t call for more direct aid. President Joe Biden is “open to a range of ideas” regarding stimulus aid, according to a June statement by White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki, but he already put forward what would be “the most effective for the short term.”

The scaled-back compromise of the $1 trillion bipartisan infrastructure deal, which was agreed to in the Senate on July 28, doesn’t include anything related to “human infrastructure” — it doesn’t address child care, improved wages or job training. Instead, those elements are to be included in the proposed $3.5 trillion reconciliation package, which is likely to be scaled back. The White House has outlined its “Build Back Better Agenda,” incorporating lower health care costs, tax cuts and investments in teachers and schools. Senate Democrats are working on the economic plan, but the process of approving final versions of the bill in Congress could take a while.

Fourth Stimulus Check Update

Biden’s American Rescue Plan Act, which created the third stimulus checks, did boost tax credits for most parents with children under 18, but only for the year 2021. Most parents and legal guardians will receive a tax credit of $3,600 for children under six, and $3,000 per child aged six through 17.

Half of that credit is coming in the form of monthly advance payments to parents beginning July 15 $300 per month for younger kids, and $250 for older ones. That’s similar to the monthly recurring checks that some legislators have called for.

The same law also retroactively exempted a large chunk of unemployment benefits paid out in 2020 from federal income tax. People who collected unemployment in 2020 and paid tax on it are getting thousands of dollars in tax-refund checks.

The American Rescue Plan Act also offers tax credits that cover all or most of the cost of a “Silver” health-insurance plan for six months under the Affordable Care Act, aka Obamacare. You’re eligible for this if you filed for unemployment benefits at any time in 2021, and if you don’t currently get health insurance through Medicare, Medicaid or someone else’s health plan.

Biden’s American Families Plan, which is separate from the American Jobs Plan, will seek to extend those tax credits, including the advance payments, through the end of 2025.

The American Families Plan would also mandate up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave and subsidies for childcare.

Stimulus Check Scams And Hoaxes

Of course, popular demand for widely distributed stimulus payments, and the confusing political maneuvering that goes into crafting stimulus bills, creates an information gap that’s easily exploited by scammers.

Even with the first wave of stimulus checks in 2020, we saw bogus email messages that pretended to be from the IRS, promising “an important update on your Covid relief fund.” But they just took you to phishing sites that wanted your Social Security number and other sensitive bits of information.

Following the second stimulus bill at the beginning of 2021, those email phishing attempts were joined by scam phone calls demanding your personal details so that you could be “cleared” to receive more stimulus checks.

In March, as President Biden’s American Rescue Plan was making its way through Congress, new phishing emails promised the moon: a $4,000 stimulus check, a boost in the minimum wage, free meals and, best of all, priority treatment that let you skip lines at COVID-19 vaccination sites.

Most recently, cruel pranksters have been passing around posts on Facebook that a fourth stimulus check worth $2,500 is coming by the end of July. Don’t believe it, and don’t believe the phishing websites that claim to register you for child-tax-credit advance payments.

In fact, most parents and legal guardians don’t need to do anything to get the payments they’ll just show up in your mailbox or bank account.

How The Third Stimulus Check Became Law

The American Rescue Plan was signed into law on March 11, authorizing a third round of stimulus checks that pay a maximum of $1,400 for millions of Americans. Targeted income limits, however, exclude individuals earning over $80,000 and joint tax filers making more than $160,000.

Biden said at the signing of the bill: this historic legislation is about rebuilding the backbone of this country and giving people in this nation working people and middle-class folks, the people who built the country a fighting chance. Thats what the essence of it is.

House Democrats had moved the $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief bill to Bidens desk with a 220-211 vote just one day earlier. But progressives in the party expressed concern over Senate amendments that excluded higher-earning taxpayers from getting a stimulus payment.

Biden agreed to narrow income level requirements as a concession to moderate Senate Democrats who wanted to cap payments for individual taxpayers at $80,000 and joint tax filers at $160,000.

The Senate bill narrowly passed with a 50-49 vote on March 6 after an overnight marathon of disputed amendments and negotiations. A 50-50 tie between both parties was avoided because Senator Dan Sullivan could not vote after returning to Alaska for a family funeral.

Who Gets $1400 Stimulus Checks

The House and Senate versions of the bill agreed that individual tax filers making up to $75,000 per year will get $1,400. Couples, who file jointly, making up to $150,000 will get $2,800. There will also be $1,400 tacked on for each dependent in the household.

Where they differed was how quickly the stimulus money would be phased out to zero. The original House bill passed on Feb. 27 called for the phase out to be complete at $100,000 for individuals and $200,000 for couples. But the Senate version passed on March 6 lowered it to $80,000 and $160,000, respectively. That Senate version is what the House passed on Wednesday.

Roughly 8 million fewer households will get a check under the Senate bill compared with what the House passed, according to an analysis from the Tax Policy Center.

A fourth stimulus payment isn’t on the agenda in 2021.

Families and individuals across the country have received three stimulus checks since the start of the pandemic, but a fourth stimulus check isn’t likely to happen. There is, however, a petition calling for $2,000 recurring checks to all Americans, which has collected more than 2.9 million signatures, but Congress has no official plans to approve another stimulus payment at this time. But many families are still facing numerous hardships, especially since the enhanced unemployment benefits have expired and delta variant cases are rising.

To close the gap in federal support, several state governments have developed programs to give residents additional financial relief. Millions of Californians received a second round of Golden State Stimulus checks , and low-income are eligible for direct payments of $300 or $500. Educators received bonuses in states like Florida, Michigan and Tennessee, and some front-line workers in Vermont also received checks.
