A Fourth Stimulus Check Is Possible
For most Americans, it is extremely unlikely a fourth stimulus check will be provided. Here are a few key reasons why:
For all of these reasons, another check is unlikely to happen unless conditions take a dramatic turn for the worse such as another COVID-19 variant that is vaccine resistant, easily transmitted, and more deadly.

How To Claim The Recovery Rebate Credit On Your 2020 Tax Return
You will need to file your Recovery Rebate Worksheet along with your 2020 federal tax return. Typically, if you are filing your return using tax preparation software, the program will guide you through the worksheet.
Next, you will need to enter the amount of the stimulus payments received for both rounds. You can find the amounts you received on your Notice 1444, which was mailed by the IRS. The IRS sent a Notice 1444 for the first stimulus payment and Notice 1444-B for the second round, showing you how much you received.
When you file your 2020 return, you will have to report the stimulus checks you received with the Recovery Rebate Credit you are entitled to claim, said Samantha Hawkins, a certified public accountant and founder of Hawkins CPA Solutions, LLC in Upper Marlboro, Maryland. If you did not receive or cannot locate your notice, you can create an online account with the IRS to verify the amounts received.
If you received less than the full stimulus payment for one or both rounds, the worksheet asks you questions about your income. If your 2020 AGI income is less than $75,000 for single individuals and $150,000 for married couples, you may be entitled to claim an additional stimulus payment. If your income is above the threshold, the worksheet will request you reduce your income by 5% for the amount above these income thresholds to determine your partial payment amount.
People Who Don’t File A Tax Return
Question: What if I don’t file a 2019 or 2020 tax return?
Answer: Some people don’t file a tax return because their income doesn’t reach the filing requirement threshold. If that’s the case, the IRS will send a third stimulus check based on whatever information, if any, is available to it. That information potentially could come from the Social Security Administration, Railroad Retirement Board, or Veterans Administration if you’re currently receiving benefits from one of those federal agencies. If that’s the case, you’ll generally receive your third stimulus payment the same way that you get your regular benefits. If you supplied the IRS information last year through its online Non-Filers tool or by submitting a special simplified tax return, the tax agency can use that information, too.
Some people who receive a third stimulus check based on information from the SSA, RRB, or VA may still want to file a 2020 tax return even if they aren’t required to file to get an additional payment for a spouse or dependent.

Is Any Action Needed By Social Security Beneficiaries Railroad Retirees And Those Receiving Veterans Benefits Who Are Not Typically Required To File A Tax Return
Most Social Security retirement and disability beneficiaries, railroad retirees and those received veterans benefits in 2020 should not need to take any action to receive a payment. As with the first two stimulus payments, the IRS is to send out the new payments the same way benefits are normally paid. The IRS is working directly with other federal agencies to obtain updated 2021 information for recipients.
Some people who will receive an automatic third payment based on their federal benefits information may need to file a 2020 tax return even if they dont usually file. If your third payment does not include a payment for your qualified dependent who did not receive a third payment, you must file a 2020 tax return to be considered for an additional third payment even if you dont normally file.
If youre eligible and didnt get a first or second Economic Impact Payment or got less than the full amounts, you may be eligible for the 2020 Recovery Rebate Credit but youll need to file a 2020 tax return. See the special section on IRS.gov: Claiming the 2020 Recovery Rebate Credit if you arent required to file a tax return.
Can I Get A Stimulus Payment If Someone Claims Me As An Adult Dependent On Their Tax Return

Some older people may count as a dependent on someone else’s taxes, called a “qualifying relative.” For example, you may live with your children. In terms of stimulus check qualifications, the main tax filer would’ve had to claim you as a dependent on their tax form 1040.
A qualifying relative can be any age. To be counted as a qualifying relative on someone’s tax return, the person must meet four criteria. They…
- Don’t count as a qualifying child dependent.
- Live with the family member all year as a member of the household, or count as a relative who doesn’t have to live with the family member all year .
- Must have a gross income for the year of less than $4,200.
- Must have more than half of their support during the year come from the family member.
If you were a dependent on someone else’s taxes and were over the age of 16, you weren’t qualified for any stimulus money at all in the first or second round of stimulus checks. The new law, however, allows dependents of all ages to be eligible to add up to $1,400 to the household’s total payment.
There are a few reasons why some older adults may not have gotten a first or second stimulus check.

Stimulus check payments arent over yet for everyone.
Dont think that the child tax credit payments going out in just over two weeks are all the IRS is focused on. Some of that money includes plus-up adjustments for people who received less money than they were supposed to get in earlier checks.

So if youre still waiting for your stimulus check up to $1,400 or think you might be due a plus-up payment well tell you what to do next.

The third round of stimulus payments is worth up to $1,400 per person if your adjusted gross income is $75,000 or less as a single filer, or $160,000 or less as a joint filer. Families are entitled to $1,400 per dependent for dependents of any age.

Checks Can Make An Impact ‘within Days’
Sahm points out that stimulus checks have unique advantages compared with other forms of aid.
For one, they get to people quickly.
Research on the stimulus checks shows that people spend about half of the checks, and they do so quickly.Claudia Sahmmacroeconomic policy consultant
“The bottom falls out in a recession, so it’s important to blunt the fall,” Sahm said. “Checks do that well. The second and third rounds went out within days.”
“No other relief program came anywhere close.”
The payments also stimulate the economy in a short amount of time, she said. “Research on the stimulus checks shows that people spend about half of the checks, and they do so quickly.”
How Are Americans Using Stimulus Checks

The Federal Reserve Bank of New York says that households are spending a smaller percentage of their stimulus checks and saving more. The that households set aside just under 25% of their third-round payments for consumption. This share fell from just over 29% of first-round payments reported in June 2020 and almost 26% of second-round payments reported in January 2021.
The table below is based on all three SCE surveys and breaks down the average percentage of stimulus payments spent, saved and used to pay off debt:
New York Fed SCE Breakdown of Stimulus Check Spending | |
Payment Round | |
37.4% | 33.7% |
The New York Fed also says that households expect to spend an average 13% of the third stimulus check on essential items and an average 8% on non-essential items.
For a comparison, preliminary data collected by the U.S. Census Bureau from shows that the majority of stimulus recipients are almost three times more likely to use checks to pay down debt than add to their savings.
An earlier showed that the majority of recipients who got the first stimulus check spent their payment on household expenses. Adults with incomes between $75,000 and $99,999 told the Census that they would most likely pay off debt or add to their savings. While adults making less than $25,000 said they would use their stimulus to pay for expenses.
For those households that spent their first stimulus checks, the study says:

What If Both My Spouse And I Have Itins And Our Children Have Ssns Can Our Family Get The Third Stimulus Check For Our Children
Yes. For the third stimulus check, any household member that has an SSN qualifies for a payment.
This is different than the first and second stimulus check, where at least one tax filer must have an SSN for the household to claim the stimulus checks. That adult with the SSN and any qualifying children with SSNs will get the stimulus checks.
Stimulus Checks Aren’t A New Recession Tool
In economic downturns, the U.S. government has a number of levers it can pull to keep families spending and shielded from the most dire situations. Continued spending is key, because if people’s buying slows or dries up, companies respond to lowering profits by laying off even more workers, which only deepens and prolongs the hard times.
Relief strategies include enhancing unemployment benefits, boosting food stamps, temporarily slashing taxes and sending out stimulus checks.
The government deployed stimulus checks in the 2001 and 2008 recessions, but the pandemic prompted payments on an unprecedented scale, Sahm said: “This Covid recession was the first time that multiple rounds were sent out.”
There were three rounds of the checks: Those who were eligible received up to $1,200 in April 2020, up to $600 in December 2020 or January 2021, and up to $1,400 in March 2021.
Here are some reasons Sahm and other economists cite as making it likely stimulus checks will be sent out again in the event of another recession.

The IRS will automatically send a third stimulus payment to people who filed a 2019 or 2020 federal income tax return. People who receive Social Security, Supplemental Security Income, Railroad Retirement benefits, or veterans benefits will receive a third payment automatically, too. However, if the IRS can’t get the information it needs from your tax records, or from the Social Security Administration, Railroad Retirement Board, or Veterans Administration, then it can’t send you a check.
However, if you don’t get a third stimulus check now, you won’t lose out on the money if you’re eligible for a payment but you’ll have to wait until next year to get it. You’ll be able to claim the proper amount as a Recovery Rebate tax credit when you file your 2021 tax return, which is due by April 18, 2022 .
