Stimulus Check Irs Phone Number: Where To Call

Stimulus #3: Social Security payments, getting the IRS on the phone

The IRS Economic Impact Payment phone number is 800-919-9835. You can call to speak with a live representative about your stimulus check.

Be prepared to sit on hold, though. If the automated responses can’t answer your questions and you’d like to talk to a live operator, you may join a long waiting list. Some people say they haven’t even been able to get through.

That’s why the IRS recommends using its dedicated stimulus check portal for fast assistance. It also reminds those who are eligible for a stimulus check but aren’t required to file a tax return to use the Non-Filers tool to register for their payment.

If You Didnt Get The Full Economic Impact Payment You May Be Eligible To Claim The Recovery Rebate Credit

If you didnt get any payments or got less than the full amounts, you may qualify for the credit, even if you dont normally file taxes. See Recovery Rebate Credit for more information.

The tool is closed and it will not be available for other payments including the second Economic Impact Payment or the Recovery Rebate Credit. Economic Impact Payments were an advance payment of the Recovery Rebate Credit. You may be eligible to claim the credit by filing a 2020 1040 or 1040-SR for free using the IRS Free File program. These free tax software programs can be used by people who are not normally required to file tax returns but are eligible to claim the credit.

If you submitted your information using this tool by November 21, 2020 or by mail for the first Economic Impact Payment, IRS will use that information to send you the second Economic Impact Payment, if youre eligible.

You can check your payment status with Get My Payment. Go to IRS.gov Coronavirus Tax Relief and Economic Impact Payments for more information.

Questions About Your Stimulus Check You Can Soon Call The Irs

May 21, 2020 / 12:15 PM / MoneyWatch

The federal stimulus payments now on their way to 150 million taxpayers have generated a flood of questions from consumers, many of whom have expressed frustration at their inability to get an answer or even someone on the phone from the IRS. But help is on the way, with the tax agency on Monday saying it’s adding 3,500 workers who will take questions about the checks.

However, it’s unclear whether taxpayers with complicated situations will be able to get answers about their stimulus checks, as the IRS says the workers will “answer some of the most common questions” about the payments. Based on emails and messages to CBS MoneyWatch, the most common query is when someone will receive their money.

To date, about 130 million of 150 million Americans have received their payments, according to the IRS. The stimulus payments are $1,200 for single people who earn less than $75,000, while married couples who earn less than $150,000 will receive $2,400. Children under 17 are eligible to get $500.

The goal of the payments, which were authorized by the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security, or CARES, Act, is to help Americans weather the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

The IRS didn’t immediately return a request for comment. The IRS said in the statement that it is “starting to add 3,500 telephone representatives,” although it’s unclear if these are new hires or existing staff.

Second Stimulus: How Is The Total Amount Calculated

The IRS will look at several factors when calculating the amount for each payment, but in general it will depend on the adjusted gross income on their 2019 tax filing.

Single individuals and heads of households can expect to receive $600 if they earn up to $75,000, a married couple can expect $1200 if they jointly earn up to $150,000. If that individual or couple has a dependent child 16 years of age or younger, they will receive $600 per child.

Individuals or couples earning above those amounts will see the amount of their check reduce by $5 for every $100 over these levels. An individual earning over $87,000, or married couple earning more than $174,000 will not receive a second stimulus check.

You Owe The Irs Money

If you owe back taxes to the IRS, the agency may take some or all of your tax refund to pay off that debt. If your refund contains more money than you owe, you’ll receive the remaining balance via direct deposit or check in the mail, but it could be delayed. Taxpayers whose refunds are used by the IRS to cover existing payment obligations should receive a CP49 notice in the mail.

Even if you don’t owe the IRS money, the agency can keep your tax refund money if you have other debts to state or federal agencies. The Treasury Offset Program enables the IRS to take all or part of your tax refund to pay obligations such as child support, state taxes or unemployment compensation repayments. Such debts could delay the arrival of your remaining tax refund or eliminate it completely.

Why Hasnt My Stimulus Check Arrived

Why hasn’t the IRS been answering calls to the number set up for stimulus check inquires

So far around 85 percent of stimulus payments have been sent via direct deposit but the IRS is also sending payments in the mail. If there was a discrepancy between the bank account that the agency has on file and the stimulus check recipients current account, the agency will reissue the payment as a paper check or EIP debit card.

Delays in the postal service can account for a payment not arriving on the expected date. It should take about 5 to 7 business days for a letter to arrive, but the IRS says not to attempt to trace a paymentuntil at least 4 weeks have passed for payments sent to a regular address, and longer in other cases.

    What Else Can You Do

Another action you can take is to call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040 to see whats going on if you feel its been way too long.

However, the IRS has warned that wait times to speak to a representative may be long.

And in most cases, no further action is needed beyond checking the status of your refund.

If the IRS needs more information, it will send you a letter.

Its tough to say how long it will take to receive your refund, but the IRS claims it can take up to four months which depends on a few factors.

The resolution of these issues could take 90 to 120 days depending on how quickly and accurately you respond, and the ability of IRS staff trained and working under social distancing requirements to complete the processing of your return, the IRS said.

To avoid these problems next year, Robert Farrington, founder of The College Investor, which has been tracking tax season and the IRS for almost a decade now, recommends waiting a little longer than usual to file for a return.

This is because of all major pieces of legislation that passed, which included stimulus checks and an enhancement to Child Tax Credit payments.

You might need to wait until late February depending on when you get your paperwork and forms to file your taxes, Mr Farrington said.

He also recommends contacting the IRS if youve been waiting on your refund more than six weeks.

Correspond With The Irs By Mail

The IRS advises against it on its website, but you can still mail your paper tax forms and payments if you have no other option. And you can send letters via snail mail as wellstamped and mailed correspondenceif you dont mind waiting a while for a response.

The best way to get in touch with IRS personnel by mail is to contact the director for your local IRS district or your local Taxpayer Assistance Center. You should allow at least 30 days for a response. It may take 45 days or longer.

Remember that mailing your tax return can delay the processing of your refund. Expect to wait several weeks for your refund to be issued by paper check. Its more likely to take three weeks or less if you e-file and choose to receive your refund by direct deposit.
