What If Im Not Required To File Taxes
If you havent filed your taxes for 2019 or 2020 and werent planning to, you can still receive a third stimulus payment if youre eligible.
- If you receive Social Security or Railroad Retirement benefits, youll receive your Economic Impact Payment automatically without providing further information. However, if you have eligible dependents and did not provide this information to the IRS in connection with the first or second stimulus, you will not receive the supplemental $1,400-per-child payment as part of the third stimulus.
- Note that eligibility for supplemental payments for dependents has changed. If you have dependents over the age of 18 who did not qualify for the first or second stimulus, they may still qualify for the third. To claim a supplemental payment for which you qualify under the third stimulus, you will likely need to claim a Recovery Rebate Credit the next time you file federal taxes.
Claiming Your Stimulus Check In Your 2020 Tax Return
Eligible individuals who did not receive an Economic Impact Payment this year either the first or the second payment due to a myriad of possible reasons will be able to claim it when they file their 2020 taxes in 2021. People will see the Economic Impact Payments referred to as the Recovery Rebate Credit on Form 1040 or Form 1040-SR since the EIPs are an advance payment of the RRC.
If you did not give the IRS your direct deposit account information through your federal tax return in the last two years, and have not provided the IRS with your information as a non-filer, you will likely receive a US Treasury check or debit card in some circumstances. The check will be mailed to the address on file at the IRS from the prior year tax return. It could take 5 to 6 weeks to get the check via mail.

Stimulus Check Payout Schedule
- Direct Deposit payments will generally be deposited 2 to 3 days after the IRS confirms income eligibility for the payout.
- Physical checks will take at least 6 to 8 weeks to be mailed out.
Social Security and Disability recipients who are eligible for the payment will get the stimulus checks/payments deposited the same way they currently get payments today. SSDI will automatically get a check based on the 1099 they get and do not need to do anything.
Can my stimulus check be garnished?
The CARES act has provisions to ensure the stimulus check payment cannot be garnished for overdue loans or back taxes , but this does not apply to child support payments that are in arrears. If youre behind on child support your stimulus check can be fully or partially garnished either wont get a stimulus check or will receive a reduced one.
Couples who file jointly and are eligible for the $2400 payment may also see smaller stimulus checks where one spouse has overdue child support from a previous relationship or marriage. Even if your spouse is solely responsible for the arrears or overdue payment, the shared stimulus check will likely be garnished.
Note there are some private debt collectors that are saying that stimulus payments can be intercepted to cover their overdue loan payments based on some vague wording the CARES act. However Congress and State legislatures are working to close this loophole.

NACHA manages the ACH Network, the national automated clearing house for electronic funds transfers.

Those expecting to receive stimulus funds can check the status of their payment using the Get My Payment tool at the IRS website.
Where’s My Stimulus Check Use The Irs’s Get My Payment Portal To Get An Answer

Well over 100 million stimulus check payments have already been delivered–mostly by direct deposit, but several million paper checks have already been mailed, too. But if you’re still waiting to get paid, the IRS has an online tool that lets you check the status of your stimulus check. It’s called the “Get My Payment” portal, and you can find it on the IRS website at irs.gov/coronavirus/get-my-payment.

Whats The Maximum Amount You Can Receive
Individuals will receive up to $1,400, while married couples who file jointly will get up to $2,800. Additionally, dependents will receive as much as $1,400.
Unlike the first two payments, families will get the stimulus checks for all dependents claimed on their tax returns. That includes adult dependents, such as college students and older relatives. Previously, only children under the age of 17 qualified.
However, if youre in debt, you might not see some or even all of that money. Thats because debt collectors can garnish funds from the stimulus checks, something consumers were previously protected against.
When Are Stimulus Checks Coming From The Irs Deposit Date And Details Explained
The Internal Revenue Service will start directly depositing the economic impact paymentotherwise known as the stimulus checkinto Americans’ accounts for mid-April, around April 15.
These first direct deposits will go to Americans who filed tax returns in the past two years and whose payment details are already on record.
For those who have not filed tax returns recently, the Treasury said it was developing “in the coming weeks” a web-based portal to allow these people to provide their bank details and receive immediately the economic impact payment rather than waiting for checks in the mail.
This week, TurboTax launched a free tool in partnership with the IRS that allows Americans who are not required to file a tax return to register their details with the IRS to receive the economic impact payment directly into their accounts.
Anyone else will have to wait for a paper check. The Washington Post reported that checks for lower-income individuals will be prioritized and mailed first, citing an internal IRS plan circulating internally.
The IRS will reportedly start mailing checks out to those unable to receive the economic impact payment digitally from April 24, but some may not arrive until September.
The Treasury said social security recipients, who do not usually have to file a tax return to the IRS, will receive their economic impact payments directly and automatically into their accounts.

Why Did We Get Only Half The Amount
Many couples are finding that they are getting direct deposits for only a portion of what they think their stimulus payment should be. Some have gotten half of their payment deposited one week and half the next, and other couples are finding that their dependents’ share of the stimulus money is split between the two parents.
The IRS has explained that the first payment made might be based on a taxpayer’s 2019 tax return, and the second payment is a “plus-up” payment that is based on the taxpayer’s 2020 tax return.
The IRS has also said that part of the problem may be with “injured spouse” claims on a tax return. of only one spouse, the “injured” spouse can request a refund.) The IRS says that these couples will get their payments as two separate payments.
If you haven’t received the full amount, wait until you get your Notice 1444, Your Economic Impact Payment, from the IRS. That letter should have the correct amount of your stimulus payment. If you don’t receive deposits or checks in that amount, you may have to file a Recovery Rebate Credit . You can also read the IRS’s press release from April 1, which contains a lot of helpful details.
Special Reminder For Those Who Don’t Normally File A Tax Return
People who don’t normally file a tax return and don’t receive federal benefits may qualify for stimulus payments. This includes those without a permanent address, an income or bank account.
If you’re eligible and didn’t get a first, second or third Economic Impact Payment or got less than the full amounts, you may be eligible for a Recovery Rebate Credit, but you’ll need to file a tax return.

Child Tax Credit: December End
Some families received another form of stimulus aid when the IRS in July deposited the first of six monthly cash payments into bank accounts of parents who qualify for the Child Tax Credit . Families on average received $423 in their first CTC payment, according to an analysis of Census data from the left-leaning advocacy group Economic Security Project.
Eligible families received up to $1,800 in cash through December, with the money parceled out in equal installments over the six months from July through December. The aid was due to the expanded CTC, which is part of President Joe Biden’s American Rescue Plan.
Families who qualify received $300 per month for each child under 6 and $250 for children between 6 to 17 years old. Several families that spoke to CBS MoneyWatch said the extra money would go toward child care, back-to-school supplies and other essentials.
While progressives and some Democrats urged lawmakers to continue the enhanced CTC, it appears stalled at the moment. That means families won’t receive a CTC payment in January or beyond.

Stimulus Checks And Direct Deposit

While Get My Payment allows you to give bank direct deposit information to the IRS, you cannot change bank information with the IRS if it already has an account for you on file. Why? As the IRS explains, “To help protect against potential fraud, the tool also does not allow people to change bank account information already on file with the IRS.” You also can’t change your form of payment if the IRS has already scheduled it for delivery.
If you haven’t filed your 2019 taxes , you might want to do that now. Many people can file federal tax returns for free, and tax-prep services like TurboTax and H& R Block are easy to use. The deadline for filing taxes in 2020 was moved from April 15 to July 15.
The Get My Payment app was designed for people who file federal taxes. The IRS has a separate spot online where non-tax filers, including many low-income earners, can enter their information to get stimulus checks for themselves and qualifying dependents.
Who gets stimulus checks first? The Treasury Department says that the first recipients of stimulus checks officially called “economic impact payments,” part of the $2 trillion CARES Act to provide economic relief amid the coronavirus pandemic were taxpayers who have already filed their 2019 tax returns and have provided direct deposit information to the IRS. Many of these payments began showing up in taxpayers’ bank accounts on Wednesday, April 15, or even earlier.

Why You Get A ‘payment Status Not Available’ Message
You can use the Get My Payment app to find out the projected date when your deposit is scheduled to arrive in your bank account. The Get My Payment tool will also tell you if you’re set to receive payment by paper check, along with a scheduled arrival date in the mail. However, there could be several reasons why you can’t get a status update on your stimulus payment right now.
The IRS says that through midday on Wednesday, April 15, that over 6 million taxpayers had successfully found out their payment status through the new Get My Payment app. If instead, your inquiry resulted in a “Payment Status Not Available” message, the IRS says that this could be because:
- You are not eligible for a payment.
- You have not filed a tax return in tax year 2018 or 2019.
- You filed your tax return recently and it’s still being processed, or you provided information through Non-Filers: Enter Your Payment Info on IRS.gov.
- You receive Social Security, or are a RRB Form 1099 recipient, SSI or VA benefit recipient. Status updates for these recipients is not yet available through the Get My Payment app.
Here are more explanations for why you can’t get a payment status update, or why your check simply hasn’t come yet. If you cannot get a status update on your payment, the IRS says that you should check back 24 hours later and try again then.
Latest From Social Security Administration
The Social Security Administration says residents can receive stimulus funds on their Direct Express card if the following apply:
- You did not file a 2020 or 2019 tax return
- You did not use the IRS’ “Non-Filer” tool at the IRS website to provide information to receive a previous stimulus payment and
- You receive your monthly Social Security benefit or Supplemental Security Income payment via a Direct Express card.
SSA also advises those who received a previous stimulus payment as a prepaid debit card, and not on their Direct Express card account, may receive their third stimulus payment by check in the mail.
Federal benefit recipients with a foreign address will also get their stimulus by mail as the IRS will not deposit stimulus funds into foreign accounts.
“We are waiting for information from the IRS about timing for people who will receive their EIP by mail,” the SSA said.

When The Stimulus Checks Will Stop Being Issued
Most of the third stimulus check payments have gone out from the IRS and US Department of the Treasury, based on the information the IRS has on hand to determine payment amounts. The , however, gives these federal agencies until Dec. 31, 2021, to send out all the third checks. That gives the IRS room to process 2020 tax returns and square up payments for those who are owed plus-up amounts, folks who filed for a 2020 tax extension and other groups, like people who moved or don’t have a fixed address .
Millions could end up receiving a smaller stimulus check than they’re owed.
Still Don’t Have A Stimulus Check Here’s How To Track Yours
May 12, 2021 / 3:35 PM / MoneyWatch
While major banks in the U.S. started delivering $1,400 stimulus checks in March, the federal relief payments continue to arrive at millions of households struggling to make ends meet amid the coronavirus-hobbled economy.
The Internal Revenue Service has delivered more than 165 million payments, with a total value of approximately $388 billion, the agency said Wednesday. The latest round includes 1 million payments, with the IRS noting they have an official payment date of May 12. That means the most recent recipients will receive a direct deposit on Wednesday, or soon get a paper check or pre-paid debit card in the mail.
The timing and delivery of checks has been a cause of anxiety for some people, especially for those who receive government benefits such as Social Security and don’t typically file taxes. The IRS prioritized sending checks to people who have already filed their 2019 or 2020 tax returns, since the agency was able to quickly verify eligibility based on income and also determine where to mail or direct deposit the checks.
The agency said it’s sending another 500,000 payments to eligible people who recently filed a tax return but for whom it didn’t previously have information to issue a stimulus check.
