The IRS says direct deposit refunds will come much quicker than mailed checks in 2022.

The 2022 tax season is roughly one month in and some early tax filers have already received their tax refunds. And while the IRS is facing an unprecedented backlog and pandemic staffing issues, it says you can still expect your refund money to arrive within 21 days of filing your tax return. Around 24 hours after it’s been submitted to the agency, you can start tracking the status of your refund using free IRS tools.

The IRS recommends filing electronically and setting up direct deposit this year, as it can help get your refund issued within 21 days . “Filing a paper tax return this year means an extended refund delay,” IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig announced in a . Taxpayers claiming the earned income tax credit or additional child tax credit also get a slight delay — the IRS expects those refunds to arrive around March 1 for those filers.

How To Use Irs ‘get My Payment’

The “Get My Payment” tool is available at www.irs.gov/coronavirus/get-my-payment. To use it, you’ll need to enter your full Social Security number or tax ID number, date of birth, street address and ZIP code.

For those who are eligible, the tool will show a “Payment Status” of when the payment has been issued and the payment date for direct deposit or mail, according to the IRS’ frequently asked questions.

Not everyone who is eligible will have a payment date under “Payment Status” when they log in initially, the IRS said. According to the agency, the tool will be updated when the payment date is known.

If you see a 449 instead of 310, it means your refund has been offset for delinquent debt.

Can I Contact The Irs For Additional Help With My Taxes

While you could try calling the IRS to check your status, the agency’s live phone assistance is extremely limited. You shouldn’t file a second tax return or contact the IRS about the status of your return.

The IRS is directing people to the Let Us Help You page on its website for more information. It also advises taxpayers to get in-person help at Taxpayer Assistance Centers. You can contact your local IRS office or call to make an appointment: 844-545-5640. You can also contact the Taxpayer Advocate Service if you’re eligible for assistance by calling them: 877-777-4778.

Though the chances of getting live assistance are slim, the IRS says you should only call the agency directly if it’s been 21 days or more since you filed your taxes online, or if the Where’s My Refund tool tells you to contact the IRS. You can call 800-829-1040 or 800-829-8374 during regular business hours.

Is It Good Or Bad To Get A Big Tax Refund

The mechanics of getting a refund have to do with how much you withhold from each paycheck to cover your individual income taxes. If you withhold too much, you get money back. If you don’t withhold enough, then you end up having to pay come tax time.

Over-withholding is equivalent to giving the U.S. government an interest-free loan, but you may prefer to get a large check every spring. Which approach is best depends on the person, says Lisa Greene-Lewis, a certified public accountant and tax expert at TurboTax.

“Some people really look forward to the refund moment,” she adds. “If they have that money in their paychecks, they may spend it when it’s divided up over the year. But when they get a lump sum of refund, a lot of people use that to pay down debt or pay bills and necessities.”

Do what works for you, use these tips and spend your refund wisely.

What Do Tax Topic 152 Tax Topic 151 And Irs Error Messages Mean

IRS creates stimulus tracker

Although the IRS’ Where’s My Refund? tool will generally show one of the three main statuses — Received, Approved or Sent — for your refund, there are a wide variety of messages and notices that some users may see.

One of the most common is Tax Topic 152, a generic message indicating that you’re likely getting a refund, but it hasn’t been approved or sent yet. The notice simply links out to an informational topic page on the IRS FAQ website explaining the types and timing of tax refunds.

During the 2022 tax season, many Reddit tax filers who filed early received the Tax Topic 152 notice from the Where’s My Refund? tool accompanied by a worrisome message: “We apologize, but your return processing has been delayed beyond the normal timeframe. You can continue to check back here for the most up to date information regarding your refund. We understand your tax refund is very important and we are working to process your return as quickly as possible.”

The purported delay could be an automated message designed for taxpayers claiming the child tax credit or earned income tax credit. Due to additional fraud protection steps, the earliest filers with those credits can receive their refunds will be March 1. Several Reddit users commented that the message eventually cleared and they received notifications their refunds were sent.

Child Tax Credit: December End

Some families received another form of stimulus aid when the IRS in July deposited the first of six monthly cash payments into bank accounts of parents who qualify for the Child Tax Credit . Families on average received $423 in their first CTC payment, according to an analysis of Census data from the left-leaning advocacy group Economic Security Project.

Eligible families received up to $1,800 in cash through December, with the money parceled out in equal installments over the six months from July through December. The aid was due to the expanded CTC, which is part of President Joe Biden’s American Rescue Plan.

Families who qualify received $300 per month for each child under 6 and $250 for children between 6 to 17 years old. Several families that spoke to CBS MoneyWatch said the extra money would go toward child care, back-to-school supplies and other essentials.

While progressives and some Democrats urged lawmakers to continue the enhanced CTC, it appears stalled at the moment. That means families won’t receive a CTC payment in January or beyond.

The Irs Tool Might Say Your Payment Was Sent To You

If the IRS’ online tool says the agency has issued your stimulus money, but you have no record of it in your bank account and it never arrived in your mailbox, you may need to take one of these steps, including possibly filing a stimulus check payment trace. You’ll need to have the letter the IRS sent you.
